Jameson’s Irish Pub

Staking their reputation on steaks?

A few months ago we reviewed the Monday night Steak Special at Jameson’s Irish Pub, and gave it the thumb’s up. For B. 150 I felt this was never going to be beaten, so it came as a surprise when Kim Fletcher, Jameson’s landlord rang me up to suggest we come over and try their Steak Night. When I protested that we’d done it already, loved it and been back many times, he replied, “Our new Steak Night. It’s on Thursdays and it’s sirloin!” I was still reluctant, but Kim Fletcher was in full stride by this stage. “It’s different, different steak, different concept, just come and try it!” So we did.

Before we get into the food, there are still a few people who are not sure of exactly where Jameson’s Irish Pub is located, so here are a couple of the easiest ways to get there. Firstly, come off Pattaya Second Road, turning right into Soi 4 at the Bangkok Bank corner (that is between Pattaya Central Road and Pattaya North Road and just before Soi 6 on the left hand side). Follow Soi 4 up and it will veer right about 300 meters from Second Road. After swinging right you will see Nova Park on your left and Jameson’s immediately afterwards. Go past it 20 meters and there is a large dedicated car park. The alternative is to turn from Pattaya North Road into the long road behind the Big C complex. Follow this road all the way to the T junction (where it meets Soi 4), and swing left, joining the route from the Bangkok Bank. Once again, Nova Park and Jameson’s are on the left. Simple!

The venue is very “Irish pub” with dark wood, a sit-up bar along one side, various nooks and crannies, plenty of comfortable chairs, TV’s for sporting events and some very happy Colleens (and lads) serving.

Returning to the food, I have said this before, but it is worth reiterating, when the landlord is also a chef, you stand a very good chance of getting good food! Kim Fletcher was a chef. The choice of specials is totally under his control, so if one isn’t popular, Kim carries the can. He carried it for the Thursday night spaghetti special, which although Kim loved spaghetti, he found that not everyone did - hence the rethink, and the change into becoming the “Sirloin Steak night”.

A brief mention of the specials will not go astray either. Monday night is the ‘original’ three course steak night, sizzling platter, the works for B. 150. Tuesday is the B. 150 chop night, Wednesdays an all you can eat curry night at B. 250, Thursdays now the sirloin night, Fridays fish and chips for B. 150 and then the all you can eat carvery at the weekends for B. 350. Of course there is also the full a la carte menu if that is your wish.

We began our B. 150 three course sirloin night with the smoked chicken and lentil cream soup. Hot and delicious and a goodly serving too that was worth B. 150 on its own. When we were ready, the steaks arrived on large plates, with accompanying coleslaw salad, corn on the cob and jacket potato. The steaks were cooked to our order, which had been noted at the beginning of our evening. These were also very tender and tasty, so much so that I did not use any of the offered sauces. The chocolate mousse at the end was again an example of gluttony, one of my acknowledged sins, as I also ate Madame’s who was too full to do justice to it.

“With 150 baht in your pocket, you’ll never starve in Pattaya,” said an acquaintance of mine, “especially if you go to Jameson’s!” I could only agree. We enjoyed it, and so will you. Go along and try it any Thursday night.
