DINING OUT - ENTERTAINMENT

The Captain’s Corner Steak House

Still one of the best values for money

by Miss Terry Diner

The Captain’s Corner Steak House has been operating for seven years at its location on Thappraya Road, nestled between the Residence Garden and the Residence Suites. A short distance from South Pattaya it has become a landmark in an area that has seen many changes. It was also some time since the Dining Out team had visited the restaurant, so it was of interest to us to see if it had been able to maintain its position as a good family venue.

The tables are arranged in a semi-garden setting, but this is covered for the most part, with overhead fans to keep the diners cool. In one corner there is a sit-up bar, whilst along the far wall there is the salad servery, the ‘butcher’s shop’ and then the large two-man BBQ.

The range of salad vegetables on offer is reasonably extensive, but does depend on local market availability. On our evening there was quail eggs, capsicum (bell peppers), sweet corn, mixed vegetables, onions, tomatoes, cauliflower and snow peas. To go with these items there were three salad dressings plus garlic bread or French bread.

The BBQ items on offer included a foil-wrapped baked potato, beef steaks, New York cut steak (tenderstretch), ribs, chicken legs, chicken skewers, pork medallions, marinated pork steaks, shashliks, pork sausages, cocktail sausages wrapped in bacon on skewers, fish steaks, squid, prawns on skewers, and probably more that I missed as I pondered over my choices!

The concept is very simple, and by now the staff have made it foolproof. You begin with picking up your plate which has a number with it. Move into the ‘butcher’s shop’ and choose you BBQ items and give them to the BBQ chef’s little helper, keeping the number which you show at the table, so they can marry up the BBQ with the right table. Another word about the BBQ will not go astray here - steak items are cooked ‘medium’ unless you order otherwise.

Having done that, go to the salad area and select your salad items, and the salad dressing(s) you want, and take them back to the table to nibble while the BBQ items are cooked. The salad items were fresh too, and I particularly liked the garlic dressing. When your BBQ items are ready, one of the friendly waitresses will bring the plate right to your table. Simple!

Madame felt like seafood and had chosen a fish steak and (several) prawn skewers. These came with a spicy sauce which she enjoyed immensely.

I had gone for the meats, being a card-carrying carnivore, and at the suggestion of Kannikar Ottesen, one of the driving forces behind the Captain’s Corner concept, I also tried the New York cut beef (as well as some marinated steak and some thick pork medallions). The Captain’s Corner Steak House lived up to its name. Great steaks and correctly cooked, too, over the charcoal grill, leaving that real BBQ flavour. Of course there were also different sauces (including BBQ) and mustards to go with the meats.

It is pleasing to report that the Captain’s Corner Steak House has not just maintained its position, but has expanded its range while keeping the same high standard in food. The all-you-can-eat offer is still there, and I defy anyone to leave and complain they have not had enough to eat. The ‘tenderstretch’ beef was excellent, but to be perfectly frank, all the BBQ items we tried were excellent.

With the full adult price only B. 295 plus VAT, and children under 12 at half price, this has to be a preferred venue for families as well as couples. The Elvis fans should also make a note of the Wednesday evening appearances of “The King” (on our Wednesday night it was packed, so a table booking might be good insurance). On other nights there is easy-listening music. Very highly recommended.

The Captain’s Corner Steak House, 146/107 Thappraya Road (between the Residence Garden and the Residence Suites and before Mr. Mac’s Hotel), telephone 038 364 318, free pick-up service from hotels in Pattaya and Jomtien, telephone 038 364 314; email [email protected]. Secure parking outside.
