Air India launches non-stop flights from Bangkok to Shanghai

Effective December 11, Air India will launch their new destination flights direct non-stop from Bangkok to Shanghai on their A310 aircraft.

“This new route will open a whole new market and enhance business traffic between India, Thailand and China. It is a great milestone for us as Air India is in our 50th year of operations in Bangkok, making us one of the oldest carriers operating in Thailand,” said Alka Jayaka, Air India country manager.

The route will fly direct from Bangkok to Shanghai return before flying on to Mumbai and Delhi and back again.

Fair prices and convenient timings are planned to provide the best opportunity for travelers. Flight schedules are: Thursdays: Mumbai-Dehli-Bangkok- Shanghai, leaving Bangkok at 2.15 p.m. with return flight from Shanghai at 9.55 p.m. to Bangkok before flying to Mumbai and Delhi arriving 8.15 a.m local time on Friday Morning.

Sunday flights are Mumbai -Dehli-Bangkok-Shanghai with the Bangkok link leaving at 7.40 a.m. and arriving in Shanghai 2.10 p.m. local time. The return flight from Shanghai leaves 3.20 p.m. local time and arrive in Bangkok at 8 p.m. before continuing on to Dehli and Mumbai arriving at the final destination at 1.40 a.m. Monday morning.

Air India also flies twice weekly to Tokyo, Delhi and Mumbai on 747 aircraft and thrice weekly non-stop from Bangkok to Mumbai and Delhi return, also code sharing with Thai Airways.

Air-India commenced operations to Bangkok on August 14, 1954 and currently operates five flights between Bangkok and Mumbai - three via Delhi and two via Kolkata of which one is through Guwahati; and three between Bangkok - Tokyo. Additionally, Air-India operates three code-share flights with Thai Airways on sector Bangkok-Mumbai -Bangkok on Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday.

In related news, the Associated Press reported that Air India will buy a total of 28 new planes from both Airbus Industrie and Boeing Co. over the next five years in a purchase worth US$2.1 billion, news reports said Sunday, November 9. The airline will buy 10 long-range A-340 jets from European consortium Airbus and 18 short-range 737-800s from its American rival Boeing, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

The purchase was approved at a meeting of the airline’s board, airline spokesman Jitendra Bhargava was quoted as saying by The Asian Age newspaper. The airline currently has a fleet of 33 planes.

Singapore eyes Thailand as MICE tourism partner

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has called on the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to act as a partner in its promotion of meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions (MICE) in the tourism market.

Gerard Lee, director of the STB’s Planning Division, said, “This year Singapore is launching a campaign entitled ‘Make it Singapore’ to ensure Singapore’s continuing prominence for the MICE market.”

Noting the wealth of tourist destinations in Thailand, he said that the STB also wanted to go into partnership with the TAT to engage in joint marketing campaigns, and promote tourism between the two nations. (TNA)


Trang launches new Andaman tourist port

The southern province of Trang recently opened a new tourist port to boost tourist arrivals and create a cruise shipping network in the Andaman Sea.

Speaking after presiding over the official opening of the Baan Tase port in Hat Samran sub-district, Kij Leekpai, president of the Trang Provincial Administrative Organization, said that the port had been constructed using 15 million baht in funding from the government’s 2002 economic stimulus program.

The port will also serve as a tourist route linking Trang with Malaysia’s Langawi Island, thus facilitating travel between the two countries. (TNA)


Finnair extends winter timetable

Finnair’s winter timetable for the period from October 26, 2003 until March 27, 2004 has been published, in advance of the start of the winter season. Miami returns to Finnair’s winter scheduled route network after a three-year absence, and Asia is served by 20 weekly scheduled flights over the winter period. Direct flights from Europe to Lapland are also more extensive than before.

Finnair flies to Miami twice a week, on Thursdays and Saturdays as of October 23 until the end of the winter season.

Miami also provides onward connections to South and Central America. Convenient flight connections to the Caribbean are available on flights operated by Finnair’s OneWorld alliance partner, American Airlines. Finnair’s domestic network also connects well with the Miami departures from Helsinki.

The new route service to Shanghai in September means that flights to mainland China now operate 11 times a week. Flights to Shanghai operate three times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays through the winter. Beijing is served five times a week and there is a thrice-weekly frequency for flights to Hong Kong, Tokyo, Osaka, Bangkok and Singapore.


Qantas changes terminal in Paris

Qantas announced that its Paris flights via Singapore would operate to and from a different terminal at Charles De Gaulle Airport from Tuesday, effective 28 October.

Qantas Group General Manager Sales, Rob Gurney, said the change - from Terminal One to Terminal 2A - will provide a much improved airport experience. Qantas Club members will be able to use the American Airlines Admirals Club which boasts extensive lounge and bar seating, nine work stations and other business facilities.

Gurney said the move to Terminal 2A would result in later departure times for the airline’s three weekly services out of Paris to Singapore. “The full array of onward connections to Australia remains unaffected,” he said.


Bangkok gets new tourism website

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has just launched a trilingual website to offer travel information to tourists. Suohot Jeeraphan, director of the BMA’s tourism division, said that the website, www.bangkoktourist.com, would offer data in English, Thai and Chinese, with information on tourism destinations, accommodation, travel within Bangkok, exchange rates, contacts for foreign embassies, airport tax, airlines and other essential tourism information.

The website will also included maps of Bangkok and allow visitors to the website to ask each other questions relating to Bangkok tourism. (TNA)
