New stadium in North Pattaya promises year round matches for boxing fans

Last Wednesday, Sansak Ngamphichet, advisor to the Minister of Tourism and Sports officially opened the new Thai boxing stadium in Pattaya. Pattaya city mayor, Pairat Suthithamrongsawat, and hundreds of boxing fans attended the ceremony. This new stadium is situated next to the Palladium discotheque off Pattaya 2nd Road in north Pattaya.

Santsak Ngampichet (center), advisor to the minister of tourism & sports, pushed the button to open the new North Pattaya boxing stadium, accompanied by VIPs Mayor Pairat Suthithamrongsawat, (3rd left), Anand Ungkanavisan (2nd from left), chairman of the public prosecutor department region 2, and Khru Yodthong Saenanand (right) from the Professional Boxing Association of Thailand.

Yodthong Senanand, professional Thai boxing association guru and manager of the stadium said the stadium was built to organize professional bouts to promote the sports to young Thais who would benefit from the skills and physical fitness of the sport. Foreign visitors would no doubt enjoy a first-hand experience of this now world famous and unique form of martial arts. Under the management of Chanwut Vai-Wut also known Sak Paed-riew, the stadium attracted a lot of Thai boxing fans during the pre-launching bouts in July. Chanwut said good matches would be provided to the fans twice a week, on Tuesday and Thursday. On the official opening day, over 20 bouts by skillful boxers were demonstrated. The boxers thrilled the crowd with their expertise in the unique characteristics of Thai boxing. Some foreign boxers also fought with Thai boxers, which thrilled and amused the spectators.

Sansak said he was glad to see the sport of Thai boxing being promoted and he said he believed that the stadium would become the center of professional Thai boxing competitions at the national level in the future. He said that the promotion of the sport is good for Pattaya city and for Thai boxing in general.

Berra is back!

Mike Franklin

Philippe Berra confirmed his recent return from Switzerland by winning the Shenanigans Pairs Combined Stableford at Plutaluang South & East courses on September 16. Clearly not alone, he successfully paired with Dennis Edmunds, returning a combined best score of 75 Stableford points.

Dennis, Mike and Philippe at the prize giving in Shenanigans.

Bob Pearce and John Healy, newcomers to Shenanigans Very Friendly Golf Society, claimed the runners-up spot with a creditable 73 points. Ann Drader and Tai Kennedy were in third place with 72 points, and took the consolation prize.

Unusually, the greens on South and East were somewhat variable but Philippe managed to putt through it all to make 41 points, the best score of the day.

Mike Franklin consoles Tai Kennedy, coming in third place with 72 points.

The weather was fine, dry and mainly overcast with a light breeze.

The usual technical prizes were on offer. Berra popped up again with the near pin on S.4; Bob Pearce and John Healy added to their prize fund by claiming the near pins on S.7 and E.5 respectively, and Ian Edwards was closest on E.2. John Duthie sank the longest putt on S.9, and Steve Ryser denied Berra’s rather short long putt on E.9.

Back at Shenanigans, newcomers Bob Pearce, John Healy, Leo Satanove (alias Sabatini), John Duthie and Mike Gerrard were welcomed, and it was welcome back to Roger Baker, Graham Ramsay and, of course, Philippe Berra.

It was one of those good days on the golf course and rather nice to see Landlord Kim Fletcher back on the ‘links’ again.

September offers another Tuesday outing on September 30, this time to Century Chonburi for a Pairs Scramble – sign-up on Shenanigans golf notice board for that. If you haven’t played Century Chonburi before, it will come as a pleasant surprise.

Finally, the Shenanigans Irish Open Championships on Friday October 3 are only a week away. Entry forms with full details are on the notice board, behind the bar and on the web site at www.shenanigans-pattaya.com.

Complete the form and hand in, with entry fee, at Shenanigans office or give to Mike Franklin. If you need a golf cart, be quick, and be sure to mark the tee-time period you prefer. Plutaluang East & South courses are booked for the day and all groups will tee-off from East #1 between 07:30 am and 12:30 pm.

Friday September 19
Burapha Golf Club

It is always a pleasure to play at Burapha it seems so friendly and sports two fine 18 holes, of which the test for the day was the West course or for the experts the new course. Maybe in my opinion not the best of the two but it is gradually getting better and is the course Burapha seem to use most for competitions.

Nattaporn Thongpen star of the day.

On the day the course was in fine condition and the start tees were lined with the placards of the sponsors, making the atmosphere enhanced and quite charged. This lead to some good golf from some competitors whilst many struggled. One good point of the day was that A & B flights played Stroke whilst the remainder played Stableford. This keeps the flow of the competition swift as the lower handicappers tend to play tighter, whilst the higher handicappers have been known to spray the ball around a bit more.

At present the town is not packed so this tournament was lightly supported but still fought out with the will to win and good manners that one expects of this competition.

In the A Flight, 0 to 13, Guran Pederson won with a gross 80 and a net 67 ahead of a countback for second with a net 72 which saw Edwin Morris come second ahead of Mike Gerrard in third.

The B Flight, 14 to 18, was won by Dennis Edmunds with a net 66 well ahead of Ian Edwards net 73 and Herbie Ishinaga back in third with a net 77.

The C Flight, 19 to 22, had some good scores and the Stableford scoring method proved its worth. The winner with 41 points was Gerhard Schulz ahead of in second Carl Bauman with 39 points with Rob Aughton in third with 36 points.

The D Flight, 23 to 36, was won by Stan Axon with 40 points ahead of Steve Wilkens with 37 points and Ramsey Smith with 36 points.

In the ladies Flight we had a clear winner when Nattaporn Thongpen scored an excellent 42 points ahead of Bangom Pampoon in second with 35 points and Runghu Dee Deane in third with 33 points.

Special mention in the Technical prizes should go to Bangon Pampoon in the Ladies flight with 3 wins, Nattaporn Thongpen with 2 wins, Simon Dutton in Flights D & C with 3 wins and John Hall in Flights A & B with 2 wins.

A Flight Winner: Guran Pederson, net 67; Second: Edwin Morris, net 72; Third: Mike Gerrard, net 72

B Flight Winner: Denis Edmunds, net 66; Second: Ian Edwards, net 73; Third: Herbie Ishinaga, net 77

C Flight Winner: Gerhard Schulz, 41 points; Second: Carl Bauman, 39 points; Third: Rob Aughton, 36 points

D Flight Winner: Stan Axon, 40 points; Second: Steve Wilkins, 37 points; Third: Ramsay Smith, 36 points

Ladies Winner: Nattaporn Thongpen, 42 points; Second: Bangon Pampoon, 35 points; Third: Runghu Dee Deane, 33 points

Long Drive: A & B: Ebrahim, C & D: Rob Aughton, Ladies: Nattaporn Thongpen

House of the Golden Coin alone in third, Jack & Tar and Caf้ Ole tied for fourth

Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League

House of the Golden Coin is in third place alone after taking four points from Nam Tip. Golden Coin had the best team bowling of the day with Captain Mio knocking down 557 pins, Tui tipping over 513 and Ladda adding a 509 pin total. Jack & Tar, led by Eric’s 522 series, took all four points from Three Sisters and jumped up into a tie for fourth place after week 7 of the 30-week league.

Bill & Otto bowled the only 200 games of the day.

Caf้ Kronborg moved up in the standings after there four point win over Brother D. Alt Koelle, led by Captain Otto’s 203 game and 526 series, took three points from Shakey Pete’s. Ooy had a 501 pin total for Shakey Pete’s.

First place team VFW Post 9876 split their series two-two with Night Life. VFW Captain Bill rolled a 209 game and Somrak led the Night Life team with a 521 series. PSC Golf from Bobby Joe’s 60’s Bar

Friday September 19
Sriracha
Stableford

Big things are happening at Sriracha at the present time. The place is under new ownership and big efforts are being made to improve the condition of the course.

Winners Bruce, Max, John Emmerson and Oy.

So to take the 60’s Bar to Sriracha was no problem, to throw an obstacle course in with the golf just added to the fun. In a few months this place will, I am told, be vastly improved. Only problem is will they let us play it then.

Back to the day, started as normal with all the poor people meeting at Bobby Joe’s for a free breakfast, then off to Sriracha for some Golf. First fairway has a temporary green but once past that, generally, it is pretty clear and a good walk around.

On the day we had good weather and some fine scores but the best score came from a slightly thinner John Emmerson who won on countback from Max Matthews. Then the trip back after testing the hospitality of the Sriracha Restaurant.

Back at Bobby Joes, as he had been requested to, Bobby produced a fine beef stew that went down very well until we then got into the presentations.

Winner: John Emmerson

Near Pins: Derek Brook, John Emmerson, Max Matthews

Long Puts: Bruce Bacon, John Healy

Lucky Draw: Ray Spurling, Bob Pearce

IPGC TAGGS from the Haven

Monday September 15
Green Valley
Stroke play

1st: Phil Groves, 70 cb9 34
2nd: Arthur Hancock, 70 cb9 35.5
3rd: Paul Simpson, 71
4th: Trevor Schirmer, 72 cb9 34
5th: Stephen Beard, 72 cb9 35

A very soggy week started at the now notorious earthmoving site at what was a Peter Thompson designed course at Green Valley. The old hands made the best of the wet conditions of the fairways and greens to record quite creditable rounds in the circumstances.

The best of the bunch were Phil groves and Arthur Hancock, who needed to be separated by countback before Phil was declared the winner.

They were closely followed by newcomer Paul Simpson, and he in turn by Trevor Schirmer and “The Doc”.

There were no twos on the day and the pool was therefore carried forward to Wednesday.

Prior to the prize giving Richard Livingston, the resident PGA Professional, welcomed new members Simon Spaulding from Australia and Paul Simpson from England.

Wednesday
September 17
Khao Kheow
Stableford

1st: Dave Lee, 37 points
2nd: Larry Ball, 36
3rd: Trevor Edge, 34
4th: Bob Lindborg, 33 cb9 16
5th: John Larder, 33 cb9 15
6th: Tim Hansell, 33 cb9 12
7th: Jimmy Little, 33 cb9 11

Much jubilation followed the extremely popular win by Dave Lee who narrowly edged out returnee Larry Ball over the difficult A and C courses played from the yellow tees at Khao Kheow Country Club. The course was again very wet, giving little or no run on the fairways and greens that were unusually slow as the conditions continue to make the local green keepers jobs difficult to get machinery onto the playing areas. But generally the course is now getting back to the standard that we have come to expect at this excellent venue.

Trevor Edge just managed to keep in front of a battling group of four golfers to secure third place.

Bob Linborg kept John Larder, Tim Hansell and Jimmy Little back with a better back nine that was decided by count back.

The twos pool including the carry over was shared by Mike Dabanovich, Malcolm Clare and Kevin Reid.

Back at The Haven Richard welcomed new members Andy Murray from Scotland and Koji Yamada from Japan and also welcomed back Larry Ball and Tim Hansell both from the USA.

Friday September 19
Century Ban Chang
Stableford

1st: Trevor Schirmer, 35 cb9 19
2nd: Mike Dabanovich, 35 cb9 17
3rd: Dave Lee, 34
4th: Tim Hansell, 33

Trevor Schirmer took his second podium position of the week after another count back from Mike Dabanovich after the latter crashed to zero points on the last three holes after promising to spread-eagle the field.

Dave Lee again showed prominently as he also took a prize home for the second time in the week and thanked his new found form to the hours spent on practice and lessons at the range on third road.

Tim Hansell also showed that it will not be long before he is leading the field on his way to a first winners trophy, with a steady but ponderous round.

Before handing out the days spoils Richard welcomed new member Bicky Singh from the UK, and welcomed back Paul Taylor from England and Richard Garland from the USA.

Once again Dabber fired in a two but this time he had the only one to sweep the pot.

PSC Golf from the Café้ Kronborg

Monday September 15
Treasure Hills
Stroke

Nice to have Treasure Hills Golf and Country Club back on the regular schedule after they have made a big effort to overcome the ant mound problem that so devastated so much of the fairways.

Wayne Koch

This course, in the early morning, has a very special quiet and peaceful atmosphere and you feel it is a very relaxing course, then you hit the course with its first two tough holes and you suddenly wake up.

The day provided good golf at great value and on the day Wayne Koch came in the winner with a fine net 69. Second was decided on countback on net 70 with Bob Morrison coming second and Ted Morris third. In fourth was Big Pete Galle with a net 71.

Thursday
September 18
Bangpra
Stableford

Nice day out, fine weather, great golf course and someone else driving so I can have a couple of cold beers in the clubhouse when we finish.

Bangpra is getting its speed back on the greens, so to produce a good round you have to put well, and if truth to tell, be a little lucky. Fact is on the day, all taken into account, the course won, but of course we had our heroes, well one man did in fact beat his handicap.

In the A flight, 0 to 16, Ted Morris was our lone ‘Golden Oldie Heroes’ and won with 37 points ahead of a countback for second on 36 points which was won by Brian Noguer ahead of, in third, the ever present Ebrahim.

The B flight, 17 up, was won by Doug Dempsey with 35 points in a countback, ahead of, in second, Philippe Berra also 35 points. Third and a few points behind was James Flanagan with 32 points.

Low handicappers have power too much

IPGC Golf From Lewiinski’s

Sunday September 14
St Andrews 2000 –
White Tees
Stableford

1st Place A Flight: John Emmerson, 42 points
2nd Place A Flight: Rick Sharp, 40 points
3rd Place A Flight: Larry Watson, 40 points
1st Place B Flight: Kevin Bowman, 37 points
2nd Place B Flight: An Kaesavane, 35 points
3rd Place B Flight: Terry Phur, 34 points

It was a week where the 50%-50% field split vacillated between handicaps of 10/11 and 11/12 all week and it was an uncommon Sunday as Lewiinski’s Golf Society was generously moved over to St. Andrews due to a major Thai tournament.

Strength of field notwithstanding and fresh off a six-week hiatus to the States, Johnny Emmerson (a/k/a The Old Silverback) served notice that he is back in town and a player to be dealt with, his relatively new 8 handicap notwithstanding. John topped an impressive power output by the A Flight as three players fought for two spots with 40 points apiece. The hard luck loser was Jim Wickstrom who shot a gross 73, and walked away empty handed!

The gods can be cruel. It should Kevin Bowman who is seemingly lauded once a week for his play sought the comfort of B Flight to take the top step with one under handicap 37 points. An Kaesavane, in the unusual circumstance of finding herself in B Flight, took the second plateau, followed by always tough Terry Phur.

Tuesday September 16

Laem Chabang
(C & A) White Tees
Stableford

1st Place A Flight: Mark Wood, 39 points
2nd Place A Flight: Mike Morris, 37 points
3rd Place A Flight: Simon Spaulding, 37 points
1st Place B Flight: Eddie Blackwell, 38 points
2nd Place B Flight: Muffy Kerr, 35 points
3rd Place B Flight: Mark Campbell, 35 points

Lewiinski’s Golf Society continues to avail itself of the waning Sports Days at Laem Chabang and Mark Wood toured the C and A course of Jack Nicklaus’ favorite design in gross 76, good for 39 points.

He was followed by 10-handicapper Mike Morris, who unbelievable just eked into A Flight, and 5-handicapper Simon Spaulding, the two only separated by countback. Eddie Blackwell who has been so successful lately that the Lewiinski’s armored vehicle is making a scheduled stop at his condo notched the top spot in A. Muffy Kerr who has shown the ability to come off the rig and step right back into competitive golf with exceptional ease was second in B.

The Haven’s Mark Campbell would have normally been happy with dipping into the local coffers, but it was tainted being as it was the result of a lost countback to Muffy.

Wednesday
September 17
Sriracha – White
Tees
Stroke/Medal

1st Place: Simon Spaulding, net 66
2nd Place: Eddie Blackwell, net 68
3rd Place: Mark Wood, net 69

When Eddie Blackwell is the highest handicapper to appear on the podium at 12, you know there were good players in evidence. Eddie was bracketed on the steps by 5-handicapper Simon and 7-handicapper Mark Wood, both of whose names appeared in the lights previously in the week.

Friday September 19
Burapha (A & B)
White Tees
Stableford

1st Place: Colin Davis, 42 points
2nd Place: Eddie Balckwell, 38 points

The week was going to form and the title chosen for this week was doing swimmingly, until someone had to throw a wrench into it, and who better than the Donkey and his eternal 18 handicap.

After a week of breast-feeding his new borne son, Colin returned to the pitch and, ho-hum, burnt off 42 points. Sure it was from the whites, but it was still four clear of the rest of the field. It is unclear whether Colin will be chopped by a vasectomy this week, but god willing, he will be chopped on his handicap.

Steady Eddie cashed for the third time in three outings on the week. Been taking lessons from the Donkey?

Sky juice & other brews fail to deter JGG

Jomtien Golf Group

Four birthday-sodden groups braved Phoenix’s new sheriffs and heavy overnight rain in the inaugural Jomtien Golf Group party held on Tuesday September 16.

Jomtien Golf group players pose for a picture before teeing off for the inaugural golf round of the newly found JGG Charity Fund.

Scoring was atrocious, but all enjoyed a heavy consumption of sun and ale. Twin brothers Scott and Sean McKienan proved to be the largest consumers of the latter, with Sean taking the Second Last award by a single stroke from his brother. They also proved that the new course marshals will turn a blind eye to abysmal golf on the production of a green can or two.

Nobody is sure of the final scores, but trophies were apparently awarded to:

Overall Winner Lyn Simmons, Runner-Up Ned Hughes, Brad Shen (3rd), Ron Gale (Best Gross & Long Drive), Yeow Gale (First Lady), Joe Wright (Near Pin) and Dave Woodbury (Lucky Draw). All players enjoyed a sumptuous breakfast and barbeque prize-giving supper at the Moonshine Place and the JGG Charity Fund is now off and running.

Further information may be obtained from Moonshine Place, Soi 4, just behind 7-11, Jomtien Beach Road or call Ted on tel. 038 231 956.

3 Sisters Golf

On Monday September 15, the competition for the bragging rights were the closest ever. Herb Ishinaga edged out Bill Gibson on countback in the last six holes. Both were tied at 40 points - 19 on the front and 21 on the back nine at Siam. In the last six holes Herb managed 14 points while Bill got 13 points slipping back into second position. Both hit good drives and chipped well to finish ahead of the field.

Following closely back of the leaders was Sus Ige with 38 points as the rest of the field faded away. The next best score was Jim Montgomery with 35 points. Jim has been busy the past year and has not been seen around the courses lately. It was nice to see him out again.

Holding up the rest of the field this week was a new and beautiful face. The usual geriatrics did not have a chance as Oiy Apuenrum came in with 17 points to garner the cellar position. Oiy, who does not have the time to play often, had a good time and enjoyed her round. Following close back of Oiy was our mainstay, Jim Tully. Jim waited in the wings just in case no one else found the cellar. As things turned out, Jim was saved by a petite girl who booted him out of the cellar.

Mam Trayling is champion of the Bunker Individual Strokeplay Championship 2003

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Bunker

The annual Bunker Individual Championships attracted thirty-two Bunker Boys and Girls to local favourite Green Valley on September 15 and 16. In effect there were three competitions to find the Gentlemen’s Champion, the Ladies Champion and the overall Bunker Individual Champion for 2003.

All smiles as Mam Trayling receives the Ladies’ Champion award from Mr. Loy.

Amongst those playing was the current holder Harry Riley, but the strong field guaranteed there would be no easy ride this year. The first day saw a few surprises as the current form players, PJ Redmond, Ciano Glavina and Terry Phur posted good scores.

At the top of the Gentlemen’s list was a late entry, German golfer Gerhard Schulze, who scored net 69 and will be saddened to find his handicap lowered as a result. The Ladies had a good time also with Noonit Tawapee heading the list on net 68, followed by Saranya Chaiyanont (71) with Lamud Chaidara and Mam Trayling on 72. The second day dawned with five retirees and sickness was also to prevent PJ from completing his round.

This left Terry Phur and Ciano to chase the racing German but the higher second day scores were not enough as Schulze held out to win with a total of 143 shots, from Ciano’s 149 and a clutch of players on 151.

David Johnson won third place on countback from Terry Phur, Dale Shier and Paul Rose. The Ladies’ event was much tighter and good sub-par rounds by Mam Trayling and Lamud Chaidara saw them elevated to the top two places with Saranya taking third place. Mam Trayling’s tournament best score of net 67 gave her a total of 139 and husband Ed has to build a new trophy shelf to accommodate her new Bunker Individual Strokeplay Champion trophy!

Full Results:

Overall Champion: Mam Trayling, 139

Gentlemen: 1. Gerhard Schulze, 143; 2. Ciano Glavina, 149; 3. David Johnson (c/b), 151

Ladies: 1. Mam Trayling, 139; 2. Lamud Chaidara, 140; 3. Saranya Chaiyanont, 145

Near Pins: #2 Ciano Glavina, Harry Riley, #9 Lamud Chaidara, Mick Ramshaw, #12 Dale Shier, Saranya Chaiyanont #16, Bill Macey, Terry Phur

Near Pin, Second Shot: #7 Mick Ramshaw, Lamud Chaidara

All prizes and trophies were sponsored by Dale Shier, Harry Riley and John Hanley and the Pattaya Golf Society is very grateful for their inestimable contribution again this year, making the tournament an undoubted success.

Binni savages
Bang Chang

After a heavy week, including the Bunker annual championship, a small group of Bunker Boys took the road to Century Ban Chang on Thursday, September 18, to draw a veil across the week’s golf. The round began with rain which lasted for seven holes and left the course sodden, with very little run. It is therefore amazing that some players were able to produce rounds of stunning quality.

In division one Dale Shier continued to consolidate his game and his 36 points was matched by Ciano Glavina as they shared third place. Terry Phur, another in-form golfer at the Bunker, held on to the runners-up place with his 37 points but Bob Morrison showed everyone a clean pair of heels, firing 41 points to take the top place. In division two Saranya Chaiyanont secured third place with a creditable 34 points, whilst Hๅkan Widestedt fired a level par 36 points for second place. On 3rd June this year Binni Josteinsson produced the round of his life when he fired a net 61 at Siam and the amiable Icelander repeated the feat at Ban Chang by scoring 47 points! What the handicapper will do to him, as a result, can only be conjecture but he will certainly no longer have the comfort of a 28 handicap.

There were five birdie two’s and the four winners of the Bunker Super Sawng award were Harry Riley, Dale Shier, Terry Phur and Ciano whilst the unfortunate Colin Wilkes again declined the competition.

The Bunker Banana Booby went to a speechless Ciano Glavina for letting his playing group down by shooting a par whilst the others hit birdies on the par-three fifteenth! Standards are indeed high at the Bunker!

PH3 Run 1019

Again, another Monday I thought as I dragged myself out of my pit, must be enjoying myself too much. My usual Monday morning trip to the Scandi bar ended in disappointment, no hash sheets, that will teach me to leave it so late, must have been something interesting in there I will never know.

So where is the run? The obvious answer ring CF. Answer: go past wrinkly village (where the older generation of hasher lives) to the next left a few meters more and your there, well that was easy I thought as I turned in to see the slender and petite figure of Teeny Weeny directing traffic parking . Well lovely mountain views for this a site.

Circle called to order by this weeks GM Charlie Manson, several new shoes to be drank out of before we were sent on our way by the hares Spag Head, Mrs Head & Queen Stella with the warning elephants lots of them, and there was a few as well as a few false trails and I think I found the lot, so many in fact that I found myself running behind Rainbow and the walkers, but a great trail for walkers and runners alike, even Chicken Nugget ran and got in before his father CF.

After a beer and lots of wind from The Guzzling Grinch, Charlie Manson called the circle, visitors in first, followed by the raffle. Now it’s time for Sir Airheads slot, hares on ice for the vote obviously a good run. A.-h. told to wear his pink toilet seat which he has undoubtedly earned, then iced for bus abuse, makes a change from crack abuse. Boy George on his now rare appearance in the circle was iced for making it to the ripe old age of 50 and King Yao Yao was asked to join him for reaching 65 years. Happy birthday was sung by the circle of hashers apart from The Guzzling Grinch who was farting the tune but was quickly iced for flatulence and air abuse before and during the circle what does he eat?

MC is in next for 50 runs as is Banjo to receive his 100 run shirt. Sir Airhead, C Face and a group of cracks where iced by Charlie Manson for forming there own noisy circle outside the main one, Sir CF took the circle and iced Charlie Manson next. Where is Sharon Tate these days was put to him, did you kill her? No he replies she thinks I smoke and drink too much and does not want to condone it by joining me on the run … Stupid Kraut K in next something about the Berlin wall I missed that. My turn for an icing for being so drunk I did not realize I had drove my car back to the condo block therefore reported it stolen to the police, more money for them after I had to explain how I got it back. Vodka Sprite, Banjo and Needle D. iced now for disrupting the circle just before the hash hymn. Then it was a trip to O la la for some great food and a beer and more beer.

“What a difference a day makes… 24 little hour’s”. Those are not only the opening words to the greatest recording ever (That would be Diana Washington on vocals) but also the tale of Top Rank promoter Bob Arum doing the “Weasel Waltrz.” When last we visited with Arum he was saying, “They say I’m a sore loser, but they’re not going to see my ass anymore. I am through. After this freaking outrage (Mosley’s win over DeLaHoya), I’m out of this mess. Boxing is the garbage can of sports.” Well doing the “WW” Arum has now said, “I look forward to promoting many more fights”. This won’t get Arum off the hook with the Nevada State Athletic Commission. They’re holding a hearing on his comments made after the fight. He could still be sent to the sin bin with time off for good behavior. “Assuming the position” Arum finally said, “My statements were unfortunate and inappropriate”. Yes “unfortunate” in the light that he sounded like the old coot he is and “inappropriate” as his accusations were unfounded.

The fight? Well almost a million homes bought the fight at $49.95 USD. I watched it for “nuttings” last Sunday. Two things I learned. If you watched the fight on TV Oscar won hands down. (One boxing web site asked it’s viewers to vote after watching the fight on TV. At press time 65% had DeLaHoya winning, 11% saw a draw and 24% had Mosley winning.) In the words of Harold Lederman, HBO judge, “I find it hard to score a fight for someone that doesn’t throw punches”. Mosley just didn’t do enough. In the words of big George Foreman, “This is terrible”. Just as the “Budda Crab”, as seen only by the Grandmother of my friend Wil Jaressi (Wils Tailor on Soi City Hall) causes the tide to rise and fall, DeLaHoya won the fight. It was not even close. As with almost all Mosley fights, when he’s fighting someone that can fight, it was a lousy fight. It was also evident that one million homes got taken to the cleaners. “Suckers”. How about them apples?

Chris Byrd (37-2) is the IBF heavyweight Champion. He won the vacant title when he defeated Evandler Holyfield last December. Byrd’s first defense would be against “Fast” Fres Oquendo (24-2) who’s lone lose up until this fight was to David Tua. In the Tua fight Oquendo took a large lead only to get careless and end up “kissing canvas” in the 9th round. Sunday morning he started fast and appeared to hang on for 12 rounds to annex the IBF title. “Not so fast my friend.” The judges had it 115-113,116-112 and 117-111 for “The winner and still champion Chris Byrd”. During a post fight interview with the sounds of “BS” ringing throughout the arena Byrd said, “he could have won this fight.” Many thought he did. The Square Ring had it 114-114.

As the spider said to the fly, “Step into my web”. The Land of Smiles is welcoming onto its shores in the next couple of weeks 3 PABA (Pacific Asian Boxing Association). Not counting is the fight last Friday where Saenghiran Krathingdaeng Gym (Lookbanyai), retained his Asian Boxing Council Bantamweight title via the 2 round KO route. The victim was Filipino fighter, Jess Maca, a former OPBF Bantamweight champion. Some say that Saenghiran is the second best Thai bantam behind Phoonsawat Kranthingdaeng Gym, who is currently the PABA and WBA Fedelatin Bantamweight boss. At only 4-0 with 3 KO’s that means either that someone is inhaling or the Thai Bantam gene pool is rather shallow.

Now back to the upcoming PABA fights. All three of the guests will be from arch rival boxing country the Philippines. (Did you all know that the most popular song there is Peelings? “Peelings nothing more than Peelings.”). First up is Super-flyweight Sherwin “Super Assassin”, Paro (12-0, 8 KO’s) will challenge PABA super-flyweight champ Komrit Lukkuongmuekol (Eveready) on Sept. 30 in Bangkok, Thailand. On the same card Benjie Sorolla and Wendell Cajoles (9-8-3) will try to win titles from Thai’s Kompayak Pramuk (PABA Jr. fly interim) and Pornsawan Pramuk for the PABA minimum-weight title. Could be little to do about nothing but it would be a day away from the misses. I’ll drink to that.

And finally Mr. David Brook of the Island Lager Bar on Phuket and Monkey House Fred from Nevada on Soi Post Office both e-mailed with the same information. Hopefully this will silence some critics of The Square Ring, “lvoe tehs! Now I koew how to splel . Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn’t mttaer in what oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a total mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit a porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Fitness Tips: Updating the exercise guidelines

G’day readers,

Recent criticism of the inadequacy of government recommendations for physical activity, particularly by the Institute of Medicine in the USA, have left the public confused about just how much is enough. Lets take a look at the most recent spin so we can come up with some new recommendations to better combat this battle that over 50% of the readers of this article are losing.

Guidelines History

In 1996, the US Surgeon-General concluded that exercise recommendations promoted since 1978 were primarily for physical fitness, rather than health.

Hence new recommendations, based around ‘accumulating 30 minutes of mild to moderate intensity activity on most days’ were issued.

Because of the rapid decrease in activity required in the day-to-day environment however, it has now been suggested that this is not enough, and that new recommendations should be issued.

Dr Steve Blair, one of the authors of the original recommendations has reacted by suggesting that this would be ‘throwing the baby out with the bathwater’.

Increasing the requirements to 60 minutes a day would mean many people would not even try, because of the time involved, as around 50% of the population are totally sedentary and would benefit from any increase in activity, this seems to be a negative move.

Australian guidelines published in 1999 on the other hand, did allow more flexibility.

While having the 30 minutes of ‘accumulated’ activity as a central tenet, they allowed for increased exercise intensity, as well as a psychological recommendation to “think of movement as an opportunity, not an inconvenience”.

Still time has passed, new evidence has emerged, and activity levels in the community have declined.

From the Professor’s reading of the new data available, he plumps for the following:

1. The key issue in physical activity is VOLUME, where VOLUME = frequency x intensity x duration.

2. Among those with little activity, even light-to-moderate activity will benefit (30% more than usual in stages). Among the more fit and active, vigorous activity is needed for additional health benefits.

3. To avoid putting on weight, individuals may need to accumulate around 30 minutes of activity added to day to day living (or a total of around 7,500 steps/day).

4. To assist in weight loss individuals should accumulate 60 minutes of activity added to day-to-day living (or a total of around 10,000 steps/day).

5. To achieve weight maintenance after being obese, it may be necessary to accumulate up to 60-90 minutes of activity added to daily living (or a total of 12,500 steps/day or more).

6. Specific exercise prescription may be required for specific individuals and health problems.

Before you start giggling and shrugging off the whole idea the activity breakdown in steps per day are not vertical steps, no I don’t think that an obese person needs to climb to the top of the Banyan tree building in Bangkok each day. The steps referred to are horizontal, walk around your neighbourhood, along a clean beach or even go to the gym in a quiet time when you can do all the exercise in air-conditioned comfort, you can sit your water bottles on the machine beside you and when you are feeling energetic you can set the machine to tilt a bit so you can walk up a small hill for an even greater calorie burn.

Extra steps each day are not the only option, you can try a new activity that involves repeated, steady and repetitive motion. Provided that you are doing an extra 30 minutes to avoid putting on the weight, 60 minutes to lose the extra etc… Pick an option or more than one that you think will be fun. I did, I was overweight, lacking in motivation and bored with almost everything. Then I got myself involved in a sport that I had never tried before, I’m now ‘dangerously’ fit, actually, in better shape than I have ever been in my life and have no trouble in getting up in the morning because I’ve something to do every day that I enjoy. We all go through rough patches both physically and mentally, taking care of you is your responsibility and doing it is to your benefit, benefit in every facet of your life-make the opportunity.
