Eastern Seaboard breezes past Bangkok at the 2nd Annual BCCT Golf Challenge

Brendan Richards

The British Chamber of Commerce in Thailand ran its 2nd Annual Bangkok v Pattaya Challenge June 21 at Plutaluang Navy Golf course. Even with the threat of thunderclouds raining out the day’s competition, conditions remained dry, albeit humid to see the Eastern Seaboard beat their Bangkok Cousins in overall play.

Mike Franklin (centre) with this year’s trophy in the 2nd Annual Bangkok v Pattaya Challenge. Greg Watkins (left), BCCT executive director and Daniel Poole (right) did a sterling job on beer delivery as well as organizing the day’s event.

Forty-eight players, mostly from Pattaya, braved the heat and humidity and a hangover from the previous night’s networking evening to play in the 36 format, with the top 30 net scores counting for each side. Tee off was just after midday and with the absence of the scheduled shotgun start, due to many Bangkokians and Pattayans waiting to watch the England vs. Australia rugby match, it was an interesting day’s play on the South and East nines.

Sponsors JVK and the School of the Regents (SR) were on hand to help with the proceedings. JVK provided an all in barbeque with some great sausages and plenty of buns and sauce for famished players on East 7.

The Adventure Hole, East 2, was closely guarded by the School of the Regents’ teachers, who provided a refreshing stop for all.

Undoubtedly the star players and future of Thailand golfing, the boys from the School of the Regent Golf Academy.

Plenty of fun and games on the beer delivery golf cart. A little over crowded you might say.

Greg Watkins, BCCT executive director and Daniel Poole from Sante Fe were stocked up and delivered beer to the masses on route, and with yours truly strapped to the back of the cart with camera in hand, there was plenty of action on the beer run, almost overturning the cart on a number of occasions. No more letting you drive Daniel.

Players ambled around both nines after being satisfied with both food and drink, but it was the boys from SR Golf Academy that showed their prowess with a driver. Some of them teeing off on a scratch handicap showed how the game is meant to be played, despite the fun the rest of the ‘relaxed’ golfers had on course. It was clear that the Eastern Seaboard had the clear advantage, and with these young lads being the driving force (all puns intended) turning in scores of par and under, how could Pattaya lose?

The day wound up with a buffet dinner and raffle back at the clubhouse and the presentation of the technical prizes. Mike Franklin graciously accepted the trophy on behalf of the Eastern Seaboard saying that he was honored to do so but also wished he was watching the rugby at the same time, as was many of the golfers on the day.

In all, a fun day out on the course and many thanks to the sponsors, JVK Movers and the School of the Regents, and the organizers, Les Walsh from Golfworks in Bangkok and Mike Franklin in Pattaya.

The JVK team ready and willing to serve famished golfers with some great grub.

Jason and Moon solve the mystery

Mike Franklin

The Shenanigans June 24th Mystery Pairs Stableford competition at Plutaluang South & East courses was decisively solved by Jason Payne and Moon Schwelera with a combined seventy-five Stableford points. Jason’s steady round of thirty-six points, and tap-in birdie on E.9, was boosted by a commendable thirty-nine points from Moon.

Jason Payne (right) and Moon Schwelera (left) combined for seventy-five Stableford points to solve the Shenanigans June 24th Mystery Pairs Stableford competition at Plutaluang, announced by Mike Franklin (center).

Unlucky in the Mystery Pairs draw, conducted by Tai Kennedy, was newcomer Matt Swire, who also carded thirty-nine points but only reached a seventy-one total with drawn partner Mam Trayling. However, both were compensated with technical wins as Mam was nearest the pin on S.7, and Matt nearest on S.4 also sinking the longest putt on S.9.

Usa Chaiyosit, not surprisingly, took the near pin on E.2, and Jason Payne on E.5. Ed Trayling broke from his usual quiet ranks to sink the longest putt on E.9.

The course, as usual, was in great shape, and the weather after the recent deluge fine and dry.

Back at Shenanigans everyone tucked into the Tuesday 100 baht Special, pan fried chicken breast with Shenanigans potatoes and yummy mustard cream sauce. It was welcome back to Phil Taylor and a warm welcome to Matt Swire.

Tuesday July 8th is the next outing, this time to Century Banchang for a Pairs Scramble. Sign-up at Shenanigans, in pairs please.

Teams are fighting for trophies during final weeks of the league

Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League

Three weeks to go and only first place is secure in the trophy race. House of the Golden Coin have first place sewed up but second, third and fourth place are still up for grabs.

200 bowlers Peter, Somrak and Bill.

Cafe Ole lost three points to VFW Post 9876 but is still holding on to second place. Bill rolled a 209 game and 523 series and Tue knocked down 507 pins for the VFW team to win this match.

Nice & Sleazy remained in third place but gained on Cafe Ole after taking three points from Three Sisters and knocking them from fourth to sixth place. Jeed led Nice & Sleazy with a 546 series and Ooy was best for Three Sisters with a 506-pin count.

Domicil moved back into fourth place after taking three points from Shakey Pete’s. Captain Peter rolled a 212 game for Domicil and Mai was best for Shakey Pete’s knocking down 517 pins.

Jack & Tar took three points from Cafe Kronborg behind Somrak’s 200 game and 517 series.

Winchester Club beat House of the Golden Coin and got away with three points as Golden Coin’s Captain Mio, best bowler in the league, is away on vacation in Norway. All the bowlers in this match want to forget about their bowling this week and are looking forward to next week and getting off lanes 3 and 4. Lenz had a good series of 555 and Rich rolled a 200 game and 544 series, both were bowling as spares.

Princess Cup Junior Golf Championships to be held in Pattaya later this year

The Eastern Seaboard is well known for its world-class golf courses and with that in mind Pattaya City in conjunction with the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Golftime Syndicate Co. Ltd. and the Sattaya Golf Association recently announced the upcoming Princess Cup Championship to boost the skills of young golfers in the region. The event is scheduled to take place from November 25-28 this year.

General Kanit Permsub (right) and Mayor Pairat Suthithamrongsawat (left) announce the Princess Cup Junior Golf Championships will be held in Pattaya later this year.

In a recent meeting General Kanit Permsub, deputy chief aide-de-camp to the His Majesty the King and head of the advisory committee organizing the golf championship announced that HRH Princess Sirindhorn has honored the first prize trophy. The competition is open to young golfers from around the country and the world between 8-17 years old.

A total of five flights in specific age groups will separate the youngsters with flight A 15-17 years, B 13-14 years, C 11-12 years, D 9-10 years and flight E for those under 8.

The aim of the championship golf tournament is to promote youth golfing in the region. Since Pattaya is a popular tourist city it was an obvious choice to host the event.

“This youth golf championship will be held at a world class level and fits nicely into the development of Pattaya as a popular tourist and sporting destination as well as promoting golf among the younger generation. The competition is open to all golfers in their respective age categories and we hope to attract international entrants as well as Thai competitors,” General Kanit said.

“The event will be beneficial in promoting the sport and tourism in the region through competitors and their parents and families staying at local hotels and resorts. And it will also improve the standards among young Thai golfers. We expect many young competitors from around the world to compete in this unique event,” concluded General Permsub.

Top of the league clash saw Pleasure Dome take both game and beer from Palmers. PSI had a good night also taking game and beer from Cheers, moving PSI up to second place in the league (watch out Pleasure Dome). The other two matches saw the home teams, Devonshire and Rising Sun, respectively winning the game but losing the beer to the visiting teams Bunker and Smugglers Rest. Devonshire stay bottom of the league on the under 10s rule. Pud from Pleasure Dome has the highest checkout of 89.

Week 7 of the Summer Season 2003

Arthur Bailey has ‘one of those days’

Mike Franklin

The June Diana Seniors & Ladies Open at Pattaya Country Club on June 26th was blessed with fine weather and a well-presented course, which opened the door for some very good scores.

Arthur Bailey had one of those forty-five point ‘purple days’ when everything seemed to go right, or left, depending on the shot he was playing. Six pars and twenty-five points on the front nine, and twenty points on the back were enough to be six shots clear of Super Seniors runner-up, Terry Phur with thirty-nine.

Bob Lindborg carded forty-two points to win the Seniors, closely challenged by Jack Moseley’s forty-one.

An equally close battle was fought by the Ladies, the winner being Nora Haugsjordet with thirty-nine points and Moon Schwulera runner-up with thirty-eight.

Stan Axon had a good ‘technical’ day by being nearest the pin on #5 and sinking the longest putt on #9. Moon was nearest on #7, Jack Moseley on #12 and Usa Chaiyosit on #16. That just left the long putt on #18 for Bob Short to claim.

At the prize giving, newcomers John James and Hans-Georg Bufe were welcomed, together with Khun Nattachai from the BNK Pattaya Wine Gallery who was far too young to qualify in either senior category, but was very welcome nevertheless.

The July Diana Seniors & Ladies Open is on Thursday 31st July at Pattaya Country Club so sign-up for that at the Green Bottle or Diana Driving Range.

David Johnson is the best of the few

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Bunker

On Tuesday, 24th June, a very small group of Bunker Boys returned to the generally beautifully prepared course at Bangpakong on the banks of the river that bears the same name. Sadly, not so this time, as the course had obviously “peaked” for a Thai competition four days previously and seemed a little jaded as a result. The greens were worn and “hairy” and the usually lush fairways were in need of some tender loving care.

The day was clear enough after the recent downpours and the conditions suited David Johnson and his newly discovered driver very well. He hardly put a foot wrong in his round of net 70 and this kept Hๅkan Widestedt (72) and a consistent Kevin Wilson (73) at bay. David also had the honour of firing the day’s only birdie two, but his usual reluctance to participate in the Bunker Super Sawng competition denied him the pleasure of the spoils.

Two tied at Khao Kheow

The Bunker Boys made a welcome return to the neatly turned-out course at Khao Kheow on Thursday, 26th June, for their weekly Stableford competition. The day was clear with a fresh breeze evident all day. This was to have an effect on the scores and no-one managed to play a par or better round.

The single division saw a tie at the top between Gerhard Schulze and new member Hๅkan Widestedt, both firing credible totals of 34 points. John Hughes returned from his cosy North Oxfordshire club to post a score of 31 points to secure third place in his first round at the Bunker for many a month.

For the third successive competition no birdie twos were achieved but Paul Quodomine’s prediction that he would bring home some fruit was uncannily accurate and his sixteen points guaranteed him the Bunker Banana Booby and a place in the Bunker’s press report.

2nd Division

1st: Mick Spear, 70 cb9 37

2nd: Steve Mathews, 70 cb9 37.5

3rd: Trevor Schirmer, 72

A good turnout of players meant the formation of two divisions to take on the ex Peter Thompson designed course that now is in the midst of an exercise to do ... ? The new arrangements have yet to take account of the stroke indexes and the day’s competition had therefore to be altered to stroke play.

In the first division, Moe Deverdenne continued to smite the ball prodigious distances on his way to a four under total that proved to be enough to edge out the Warbler, with Karl Holm and Ray Matti a further two shots adrift.

Mick Spear claimed the second division honours, no doubt due to the additional free time for practice since his promotion up the galley ladder, from Steve Mathews by virtue of the usual count back, and Trevor Schirmer another two shots behind them.

Ray Matti, now fully recovered from galloping finger rot since he changed from his old medical practitioner (sic) who’s best advice was “to carry a bell”, took the twos pool on his own which should defray some of the doctor’s fees.

Prior to the prize giving Richard Livingston, the resident PGA Professional and upcoming sextunagarian, welcomed new members Vic Hester, John Emmerson, Steve Mijailovic and Bobby Driggs and welcomed back Ray Matti, Chris Davisson, Mick Spear, Bob Pearce, Keith and Kevin Fortt.

2nd: Bob Lindborg, 70

3rd: Trevor Schirmer, 72

The Monthly Medal is always a popular event and with its new venue at Siam Country Club this month’s was also very well supported.

In the first division, “Sumo” Phil prevented the “Doc” from securing his third medal win in succession by a clear three shots to underline his ability over all conditions and win his first of the year. Ever-present Karl Holm was a further two shots back. Yves Philibert took his first trophy with a steady round, which he had promised on the previous outing and this time managed to keep going through to the end. Bob Lindborg and the desperate SS made up the balance of the podium with steady rounds.

The twos were shared between Brian Kelly, Karl Holm and Bob Lindborg who had two.

Back at The Haven Richard welcomed new members John Larder and Robbie Murray and welcomed back Bill Hurd. He also gave a sad farewell to Steve Mathews and Tony Quaid who were both returning home to their other lives.

1st: Chris Davisson, 3 up cb9 2 up

2nd: Mark Campbell, 3 up cb9 1 up

3rd: Karl Holm, 2 up

4th: Stephen Beard, 1 up

Chris Davisson recently returned to Thailand to continue his charity work for the underprivileged and needy of the town and was in some way rewarded for his thoughtful and caring disposition by taking the day’s spoils on count back by a single shot from the Mangler, also recently returned but not for the same altruistic reasons. Karl Holm and the “Doc” completed a good week’s golf to take the remaining places.

The Wandering Warbler, John Kendall, swept the twos pool with the only one of the day, but still didn’t win the hole in his side match. Which only goes to prove the rule “do not bet with those who make the rules”.

Richard welcomed back Larry Ball before presenting the prizes of the day and said goodbye for a while to Karl Holm, who achieved his third podium position of the week during a profitable trip that saw his handicap reduced by two shots.

1st Place A Flight, Julian Clarke, net 67

2nd Place A Flight, Joe Mooneyham, net 68

3rd Place A Flight, Jack Grindvold, net 70

1st Place B Flight, Karl Holm, net 67

2nd Place B Flight, Bob Lindborg, net 69

3rd Place B Flight, George Jackson, net 71

Julian, who plays off a seemingly stingy enough 5 handicap, served yet another notice that he may deserve to be lower. He managed 3 birdies on the last three holes at Green Valley to tidy up a round that even without the birdies would have been a personal best for most of us. His gross level to par 72 deservedly copped first place in A Flight, netting out at 67.

All golfers will tell you that a great round requires a spot of luck and Julian received his when a lag 50-foot putt fell in on the penultimate hole.

Joe Mooneyham continued his recent fine play with a lovely gross 80, net 68. Wacko Jacko Grindvold rounded out the top flight with a two better than par effort of net 70.

Karl Holm, for the second consecutive week, took the top rung in B Flight, equaling Julian’s net and accomplishing a personal best of gross 80, net 67. If you read this column often you know Bob Lindborg always comes second or third, unless it is the monthly medal, in which case he comes first. He didn’t disappoint again today dipping three below his handicap for second. George “One-Ball” Jackson showed he could play in a crowd as he ducked one under par net for the last step on the B podium.

3rd Place, John Emmerson, 35 points

The lads took on Desmond Muirhead’s St. Andrews 2000 and a couple of familiar names, Joe Mooneyham and John Emmerson, used their course knowledge to navigate to first and third respectively. Sitting betwixt them and clutching the silver on the day was English visitor Paul Young who shot level to his 12 handicap.

1st Place B Flight, Kevin Moraghan, 31 points

2nd Place A Flight, Colin Davis, 31 points

3rd Place B Flight, Colin Steilow, 28 points

Only John Emmerson managed to equal or better his handicap. John, whose handicap only recently dropped to single figures, showed no signs of fear of that rarified air, as his 38 points converted to a 78 gross.

Respectable efforts were turned in by John’s two podium colleagues, as Dhaka’s own Bill Collis and Wacko Jacko each garnered 35 points.

The word of the day in B Flight appeared to be perseverance. To say that the three place winners were surprised when they heard their name called out would be a gross understatement. Kevin Moraghan, now a well-known guest to the winner’s circle, had to go to count back to edge Colin “The Donkey” Davis. Aussie Colin Steilow set a Society record with the lowest point total ever seen on the podium, that being a robust 28-point outburst. Colin S. immediately turned his winnings over to charity. The Donkey felt no such compunction.

2nd Place B Flight, Neil Cameron, net 75

3rd Place B Flight, Colon Steilow, net 75

Bill capped the week that saw a second place finish on Wednesday with a workmanlike net 68 on the Dye Design layout. In so doing he edged impeccably attired Eddie Blackwell by a single stroke. Undoubtedly Lee Lepper was surprised (perhaps shocked?) as his 74 gained him access to the third step in A Flight.

Joe Smiley came form nowhere and kept right on going through B Flight as he went 11 shots clear of his closest rival with his brilliant net 64. Joe’s victory ended a long victory drought. Neil Cameron (those that cannot play make clubs) edged the eternally grateful Colin Steilow on count back. Colin immediately turned these funds over to charity as well.

Well didn’t it rain Noah! And to the detriment of the Kronborg, as on the Sunday night prior the rain was so heavy that on the Monday the Kronborg filled up in very short time to at least knee deep and Bjarne has spent the rest of the week trying to save as much as possible. Obviously all his electronic items are destroyed, but the water invaded the club stock room and the lockers, so all the bags are soaked and are having to be dried out individually. This drying out is a big job and some stored items may be destroyed.

Arthur Bailey

Rich Montana

Dave Richardson

Thus it was that due to the unavailability of waterborne transport the competition had to be put back to Tuesday when a much smaller turnout played. In the event the competition was won by Arthur Bailey with a net 65 ahead of Aussie Jeff Wylie with a net 68 and Kenny Mau in third with a net 71.

Meanwhile, back at ranch, the cleaning up process carried on, and the attempt to save as much as possible was in full swing.

Thursday June 26
Siam Country Club
(The Monthly
Mug - Stroke)

Always a good turnout for the Monthly Mug to be played at Siam C.C. and this month was no exception, as 34 teed off for the Mug and another four just playing for handicaps.

The course is at present in pretty good condition, and once you get there it is a pleasure to play. I say once you get there as the road out there is in shocking condition and is a real danger to drive up. Where have I heard that before?

Once on the course this fine mature course was a pleasure to play, but on this day was very hot and humid indeed, and if it is possible to get any wetter it can only happen by jumping in the lake.

Suffice to say the day was so hot and humid many took carts at the half way, this caused trouble to the scribe who accidentally ran over his ball on the fairway, another first, but it did mean losing the flight. Must have been the sweat in my eyes.

Back at the Kronborg as we prepared to present, it was apparent much work had been done by ‘mine host’ who looked absolutely shattered, and a little down at the damage done by the water. But knowing Bjarne he’ll bounce back soon.

Papa Ray (left) presents the Kronborg Monthly Mug to Pete Galle (right).

In the A flight, 0 to 18, the winner was Rich Montana, back in the fold once more, with a net 72 ahead of Brian Holden in second on net 73 and in third was Bob Benda with net 74.

In the B flight, 19 upwards, the winner was Dave Richardson with a net 68 ahead of in second Mick O’Connor with net 70 and in third Bob Clark with net 71.

So to the ‘Big One’ - the Mug - and this was won for the second time in three months, after years of failure, by our own ‘Trencherman’ ‘Nearly As Big As He Was’ Pete Galle who broke with custom and rang the bell.

Near pins: #4 Brian Holden, #8 Rich Montana, #12 Joe Vanderwegan, and #16 Bobby Clark.

Long putts: #9 Per Krause and #18 Mick O’Connor

P.S.C. Golf from Bobby Joes 60’s Bar

Friday June 27
Phoenix
(Stableford)

There is always something different about playing from the 60’s Bar and it is usually something not thought of. Today it was the total points scored by one of the 4 balls, and in particular, when all returned to the 60’s Bar, the food which was described by all as superb, excellent, best yet and even made Bobby blush. Or maybe it was a glow from the hotplate(or the vodka).

PSC President Carl Engel (right) presents top prize to Mick O’Connor.

PSC President Carl Engel (right) presents technical prizes to Derek Brook (standing) and Bob Clark.

So to the start - the players met at Bobbies and after breakfast departed for Phoenix for the first time for many months, where the ‘new’ golf chairman had arranged a special rate for the day, allowing six groups to tee off on the Lake and Ocean nines, which were in fine condition and proved a pleasure to play despite the hot, humid, conditions.

These two nines are certainly not the most difficult in the area, but such was the play that one of the groups, including the eventual winner, shot a total of 163 points and I cannot remember any group scoring so high. But of course someone will know better. The handicap secretary of course got his scissors out and 6 shots in total were removed.

The general consensus was a fine day’s golf and sat in the restaurant after, waiting for the latter groups to come in and testing the Heineken, all agreed it was worth a visit in the near future. So back to Bobbies.

Arriving back we found out Bobby had been slaving over a hot slave all day, and between them they had produced a meal of corn beef and cabbage with potatoes, carrots, and crusty bread. Superb, he gets better, and this meal in particular hit a spot with the hungry golfers and many seconds and thirds went down accompanied by praise for his skills.

Meal over, and it took some time, having in our presence Pattaya Sports Club President Carl Engel, we took advantage and let him ‘volunteer’ to present the prizes to the winner Mick O’Connor and the other winners.

Winner: Mick O’Connor.

Near pins: #L2 Paul Kraft, #L7 Derek Brook, #O5 Mark Soper and #O7 Herbie.

Long putts: #L9 Bob Benda and #O9 Derek Brook.

Lucky draw: Bob Clark, Dene Mundy, Joe Albright and Paul Kinnear.

Derek Brook soldiers through wet conditions to victory PSC - Three Sisters Golf

Sunday night brought the rains to Pattaya and flooded out quite a few locations. With the wet conditions, no golf carts were allowed at Siam so only the walkers made the round. There were still enough to form up 4 groups and surprisingly some good scores.

As can be expected, a soldier came marching in with the bragging rights. Derek Brook, being retired from the British Military, marched over the rest of the field with ease, scoring 43 points. The wet conditions were of no consequence to Derek as he demolished the rest of the field with his long drives and good approach shots.

Following at a distant second was Dick Caggiano, another soldier. Dick shot a respectful 39 points but could not match the frontrunner. Chris John and Phil Taylor were nipping at Dick’s heels as they both scored 38 points.

Ending up at the bottom of the pile this week was former winner Gordon McKnight. I guess Gordon was not a soldier that played or exercised in the mud so he slipped and fell into the cellar with 27 points. Normally 27 points would have been sufficient to discard the bag for the day but the limited number of players took their toll. Doug Powell just missed snatching the bag from Gordon but managed to scramble pass with 28 points. Surely both players will be vacating the cellar position next week.

Straight away, “Happy 4th of July” (Independence Day) to all those that salute the red, white & blue; think that Mom and apple pie is a pretty neat deal and know why they call America the Home of the Free and the Brave. Arrogant lot aren’t we? Yep. Know why? Cause we can. For Yanks under 40 and “educated” in American Schools I’ll “splain”. Independence Day is the day we tossed the Brits out and decided to go it alone. I once explained that to an English friend in less delicate language. “Yes we were dam pleased to be rid of the likes of you.” He did have a point.

The fight (Lewis- Klitschko) has long ended but the melody lingers on. The heavyweights are back on the sports pages of the world without Mike Tyson. Although Tyson tried to steal the spotlight by getting arrested in New York the morning of the fight. This time Tyson may be innocent. Hard to imagine Tyson as a victim. Only two people gave Klitschko a chance. George Foreman, who was probably doing it cause he’s George Foreman, and Patrick the Flying Frog. He was right and all us “experts” where bogus pretenders. Let’s give the Flying Frog his moment of glory.

“Hey buddy, I told you Klitschko wasn’t an easy opponent for ‘Heavyweight of the Century’ Mr. Lewis, Lewis was in no shape to knock out Klitschko, overweight, to slow and no punch, Klitschko took an uppercut that normal people their head should be ripped off, instead Klitschko didn’t even move an inch. On the other side Lewis took some (of my prediction) rights hands from Klitschko and was in BIG trouble, NO CUT, and Klitschko should had maybe not knocked out Lewis but certainly had won a unanimous decision on points. ‘I would have knock him out later on, said Lewis.’ When? In 2008?” Patrick hit it spot on.

IBF Heavy Champ Chris Byrd really stepped up to the plate when asked his views of the fight. “If you walk a few blocks from here,” he said at the Staples Center after the fight, “you will probably see a half-dozen fights as good as this one. I’m not sure I want to fight him (Lewis). It’ll be embarrassing.” Byrd interrupted the post-fight news conference to tell Lewis, “You were crap. Lewis was garbage and Klitschko was the garbage picker-upper.”

James “Light’s Out” Toney is like the Sphinx that has risen out of the desert. Left for death he whipped Vassily Jirov (31-5) removing the IUBF Cruiserweight title from the Ruskie’s head. Toney vs. Bernard Hopkins was supposed to be the August special in Las Vegas. Hopkins made demands, after the fight had been announced. During the same period Evander Holyfield was working towards a Roy Jones Jr. fight. That also fell through. The common denominator here is Don King. What a surprise. Now it’s Holyfield-Toney on October 4th. Announcing the fight Toney said, “We (Holyfield and Toney) are both great fighters. We are both great warriors. We do not run from nobody. We are not going to sit there and hug and cry and kiss like you all saw those girls do last Saturday (Lewis-Klitschko).”

Vitali Klitschko has a golden opportunity to become the “popular” heavyweight to sports fans. So far he’s not doing much to help his case. The door was left wide open as critics are coming out of the woodwork to criticize Lewis as being “arrogant”, “lazy” and not having the proper respect for the sport. Heck I’ve know that for years. Klitschko has stepped to the plate and whined about losing. “I was cheated.” Bologna.

Klitschko will be on the shelf for at least 90 days, which makes a rematch for this year “darn nigh impossible.” With Jones-Holyfield, dead a fight between Lewis and Jones could be a real possibility. Lewis is under no obligation to give Klitschko a rematch. I’m sure that Vitali reads this column so I’ll give him a little advise. “Shut up. You lost. The cut was very bad. The doctor was right. You gained the crowd by keeping your mouth shut. Continue that approach.”

Good news for a couple of the lads from the Kingdom. Last Friday Former WBA superbantam king Yoddamrong Sithyodthong (35-1-1, 17KOs), on the comeback trail, got a UD (116-113, 117-112, 118-112) over Filipino Rudy 4K Kevkatche (23-5-3, 11KOs). The win included the “PABA feather interim belt.” The day before in Nan (the place not the bread) former WBA title challenger, Denkaosan Kaovichit (22-1, 9KOs) KO’d Jimmy Pinontoan, Wethya Sakmuangklang (50-4, 31KOs) won in 6 over Wiply Rengkung. Sataporn Boonmalert (5-0, 4KOs) dropped Larry Siwu four times en route to a second round TKO.

WBC President Dr. Jose’ Sulaiman had announced that WBC superfeather Champ Sirimonkol Singmanassuk (43-1) will defend against Jesus Chavez (39-2) on August 12 in Texas or California. This is a big step up in class for Sirimonkol as well as a road game. Horse racing fans know of a handicapping angle called “back class.” Chavez has it having faced better opposition. He fought maybe the best at 130 v Floyd Mayweather Jr. losing via a 9th round KO. The winner may defend against Erik Morales, who is moving to 130 lbs.

How about them apples?

PH3 Run 1007

After five years I finally got nailed to take up the Scribe’s ragged pencil for this week’s run. I’m hoping that after this submission all will understand the merit in passing me over for so long.

The long (two beer) bus ride out to a very pleasant A-site was not without event as on two separate occasions we found ourselves reversing down the motorway. This manoeuvre is considered in some less advanced police jurisdictions as bad form but here this has been decriminalized, but not yet encouraged.

Dr. Pinky has assumed this week’s Rotating GM position (rotating on what, Pinky?). When the circle was called Blowfly gave the sad announcement that Hammer passed away last week. Details of the circumstances are not yet available pending US embassy paperwork, Thai police investigation, and release from Hammer’s family. Help was requested from any of the Thai lady hashers who might want to help with funeral arrangements here in Pattaya.

Hares VV and the lovely Two Time on-in to describe Run (swim after last night’s rain) 1007 and we’re off through lovely wooded countryside over relatively flat ground. Of the seventy six runners, over half actually ran or walked the trail! Careful, this might turn into a running club if this trend continues. The runners were very good at calling the on-ons and there was a lot of support in solving the checks. The course was well laid and the pack kept pretty close together. Front runners finished in about 50 minutes and everyone seemed to get back within 90 minutes. Great run design by the hares.

Hot, wet, dirty and thirsty, the hashers all settled in for some bevies and gossip. When the circle was called, the first order of business was to raise a toast to Hammer who since 1984 accumulated 221 runs, 15 hares and bought 2016 new pairs of shoes. Ewok on the lucky numbers and then the hares on ice for the Motorway, VV actually sat next to the driver as he missed the turn. Two visitors and two virgins were introduced. Festering Streaker as a guest RA demonstrated his jealousy of those blessed with hair by icing the pony tailed ones - featuring VV, Charlie Manson, and a virgin named Charles Brown. I couldn’t help noticing that V.V.’s hair has apparently slipped away from his forehead onto the back of his head.

Noticing Singapore S in his flash yellow jacket, our guest RA invited him to sit down and explain why he stays in Bogie Street when in Singapore (a little like Pattayaland Soi 3 for the uninitiated). He was asked if that’s where his name came from but he said, “I can’t really remember,” convenient that selective memory isn’t it.

Next King Yao Yao was honoured for his athletic prowess on the run in which various acrobatic manoeuvres were performed and only once landing flat on his arse. T4 (aka Brown Card Ken) asked to have a seat and describe why he’s forgotten all his friends here in Pattaya whilst entertaining rich visitors. All in the circle agreed ‘Card’ to be replaced by ‘Nose’.

Mobile came in to give us some more religion and punish the sinners. Current Hash Trash Free Willy took a seat along with the accused Lord Lucan, Baby’s Arm, and Lady Rose. WW was acquitted by peers and the evil Baby’s Arm and Lady Rose relieved Free Willy of his hash trash honorarium.

GM Dr. Pinky regains the circle and calls the returners. Lying leaver KBB iced along with his Aussie friends to be serenaded by Master of Song SS with ‘Bye Bye Thai Bird’. Bottomless Pit honoured for completing 50 runs then told to sit on the ice since in all that time he hadn’t hared a single one. CF with 40 hares next week, VV with 17 and Charlie Manson with 25 called to ice as witnesses for the prosecution.

Sir Chicken F takes the circle for some more old-time religion and the hares were given another grilling. He called to our attention a serious abuse of hash equipment by the beer police UTB and T4 who lost one of the helmets. Reliable sources informed the hash that our missing helmet was found in UTB’s bedroom and was most probably used in some perverted and illegal sexual activities! I hope you washed that helmet when you finished boys. The defendants’ protestations were of course met with cries of ‘lying policemen’.

Queen Stella was called in for 100 runs without a single hare and because she was seen engaged in secret activities in the trees with The Buzz, I wonder what they were up to? Are men invited? Hammer’s song was sung for the last time. Sorry news for all shoe store owners and all shoeless Thai teens in Pattaya. When we closed the circle with the hash hymn, it was very pleasant to see nearly all the hashers still there. Then back to hash sponsor TQ2 (many thanks Spunk Bubble) after a great a-site, a great run, a great circle; an excellent day out.

On-On W.W.

Fitness Tips: Fitness industry attempts to include yoga in training competencies

G’day Readers,

Well, I’m just back from a 1 month holiday and happy to be hitting the keys again after a good break. The next couple of weeks worth of Fitness Tips comes to you, via myself, from the Australian Professional Health and Fitness Network. I’ve chopped a couple of parts out for the sake of not boring you with unnecessary details and added a bit of comment in the interests of clarity - I hope.

This first story is something that has been touched on before, obviously instructor accreditation in Australia for yoga instructors does nothing for participants in Thailand. I’ve presented this to you all for 2 reasons, firstly to show what people are trying to do to standardise, industry wide, the presentation of a popular product. Secondly and by far and away, more importantly because of what Mr. Blashki said regarding what yoga really is and how it should be brought to its interested participants. Read on and you will get what I mean.

With the increasing demand for yoga classes in gyms, stakeholders in the fitness industry approached Sport and Recreation Training of Australia (SRT) to address the issue of including appropriate competencies in fitness industry training packages.

As part of the requirements of the training board, representatives from the peak bodies in yoga were invited to attend a meeting on 19 February to discuss the issue. The meeting was attended by twenty representatives from the east coast yoga fraternity, including those from the Yoga Teachers Association of Australia (YTAA) and the Australian Institute of Yoga.

Prior to the meeting, Leigh Blashki, a representative of the YTAA, advised the SRT that there are already nationally accredited courses available that provide yoga teacher training. “Yoga is a completely different paradigm to anything else in fitness. It is a spiritual and personal development discipline and the postures are not just stretching exercises,” says Blashki. “Trying to teach postures alone is missing the point of yoga; it’s stretching under the guise of yoga,” he adds.

The yoga representatives were united in their stance to retain yoga teaching as separate to other areas of fitness instruction. The national standard set by the YTAA for level one accreditation (of three levels) is a minimum of 320 hours of specific yoga training, two years of personal practice and two years of teaching practice. Considering this, the yoga representatives moved a motion that they would not and could not support the inclusion of yoga competencies within the national fitness industry package.

This first round of meetings was finalised, but it was reiterated that other avenues would be explored. The yoga fraternity has requested that yoga be excluded from the training package and that interested gym owners obtain information regarding instructor training courses from them.

Remember, it’s a spiritual and personal development programme not simply a random series of movements and gestures. Be aware of what you are paying for.

Carpe’ Diem
