Thailand is home to largest number of dugongs in Southeast Asia

“Family Festival” will be TAT theme for August

Thailand is home to largest number of dugongs in Southeast Asia

The Fisheries Department has been informed that Thailand has become Southeast Asia’s largest habitat for dugongs. A recent survey found around 200 sea cows in Thai waters. A survey conducted by a Thai research team figures this colony of docile sea mammals is the largest in the region.

According to the study, among 12 kinds of sea -grass found in Thailand, “yah ampan” (halophila ovalis) is the favorite of dugongs. This type of sea-grass is abundant in the south of Thailand and makes an ideal habitat for the animals.

Dhammarong Prakobboon, director-general of the Fisheries Department said Kanchana Adulyanu an expert in rare animal species was assigned to study the dugong in Thailand. Her report numbered the animals at 200.

A survey from the air spotted a colony of 123 dugongs, and the rest are scattered along the coastline of the Andaman Sea around Krabi, Phang Nga, Phuket, Satun and Ranong. Dugongs were also spotted living around the Gulf of Thailand off the coast of Rayong Province.

In 2001, a dead dugong was discovered in Sattahip District in Chonburi which gave evidence that they existed off Thailand’s east coast and prompted the official survey.

Dhammarong said sea cow’s teeth reveal their age, but unfortunately local fishermen often cut the animal’s teeth because of old village superstitions. A protected species, this practice is outlawed and anyone caught harming a dugong can be prosecuted. (TNA)

“Family Festival” will be TAT theme for August

Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has chosen “Family Festival” as its tourism theme for August. The festival is being held to encourage activities and closer relationships in families. The festivities will mark Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s birthday on August 12, which is also Thailand’s Mother’s Day.

The monthly campaigns are planned around different themes and are part of the “Thailand Grand Festival” scheme to promote tourism.

Vunsadej Thavarasukha, Tourism Services Development director said, “August 12 is Queen Sirikit’s birthday and a very important holiday for Thailand. Since the day is also designated as Mother’s Day, TAT’s emphasis on family fun is appropriate.”

TAT wants tour programs and activities geared so that all members of the family can participate with joy and fun. Family trips to amusement parks, zoos, botanical gardens, and national parks will be highlighted.

TAT has asked for cooperation from the private sector to hold special activities and offer discount programs for mothers and children throughout this month, the director said. Details of the programs will be announced on July 24.

Wisit Wichasil, director of Dusit Zoo said the zoo has planed to organize many activities such as taking photos with zoo animals, walk rallies touring the zoo, and stage performances for family entertainment during August.

He said on August 12, there will be special activities for mothers and kids, discounted coupons and promotions for children and families who visit the Dusit Zoo. (TNA)
