Lions Charity Golf Tournament benefits “Sight First” project and educational schlolarships

The members of the Pattaya Lions Club and the Sataya Golf Association recently held a golf tournament at Natural Park Resort to raise funds for local charities.

Golfers in the tournament were competing for trophies in the name of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. Proceeds of the event went to support various on-going charities, such as educational assistance to deserving students and the Lion’s Sight First program that provides expensive eye operations for financially burdened families.

PP Colin reckons there should be a special section for oldies, and he should be allowed to play off the ladies tee!

180 golfers took part in the tournament. The winners of the trophies in different categories were Phichitpol Dechasut, Sunthorn Kaewmonee, Boontut Saengphu, Sorawut Moniwong, Watanapol Polchiwin, Mr. Geon, Vichien Kanlop, Sanga Kijasamred, Amorn Rojanaporn, and Dyan Suwannachyn. Trophies for nearest the pins went to Warathorn Samphaongeun, Rati Tamacharernkij, Prinya Thurated and Vichien Kerdkriangkrai.

‘Thai-Ger’ Toy Ryser best overall in 3rd anniversary tournament

A comfortable field of fifty players competed last week in the 3rd Anniversary Thai-Ger Line Golf Tournament at Eastern Star. In fine, hot and windy weather, the siren sounded at 10 a.m. to signify the shotgun start. Scores for the day were generally moderate in the gusty conditions, with only four players playing to par or better.

Toy Ryser carded the round of the day, a very creditable 40 Stableford points playing off her 27 handicap. She won the Ladies Division, with Keaw Somkid returning 34 points to come second.

For the men there were three divisions, and in Division III Keith Forrt took the podium with 37 points. Mike Franklin scored just 33 points to come second.

Division II saw an improvement to the scores, Stan Axon scoring 36 points to be runner-up to Hans Pickart’s winning 38 points.

Division I results showed a slight fall-back with a winning score of 35 points returned by Ray Matti, and 32 points from runner-up Ossi Viljainen. Ossi’s gross 86 turned out to be the Low Gross of the day, but top spot went to Toy Ryser with the Best Overall Stableford Score of 40 points.

Mam Trailing claimed two near pins on #4 and #12; Ossi Viljainen was nearest on #8 and Steve Mascari on #15. Fabian himself had the longest putt on #18 and Peter Nell had the straightest drive on #13.

Back at the Bavaria, a splendid German buffet was waiting, washed down by volumes of free beer and other drinks. The prize giving presentation took place promptly, as you would expect from Fabian, at 5.30 p.m. Mike Franklin emceed the proceedings with Fabian and Aree presenting the prizes. In all, it was a very nice day, well organized by that very nice couple, Fabian and Aree Arp.

Sven Bersuemdsen sinks the fleet at Plutaluang

Sven Bersuendsen, giving full credit to his golf mentor and playing partner, Ozzi Viljannen, and playing out of the always explosive C flight, parlayed his 32 handicap into 44 points to win the August Pattaya Sports Club Members’ Open. He was joined on the victory rostrum by A flight winner Bob Morrison with 39 points and B flight winner Duncan Lee with 37 points.

The field of 72 golfers was treated to the hospitality and professional coordination of the Plutaluang Navy Course staff which provided the first tees of both the North and West Course, and which additionally ensured that players transitioning to the their respective 10th holes did so without interference from non-tournament groups.

The fun day was capped off by an awards presentation that provided trophies and prizes to the top three golfers in each of the three flights, along with prizes to the technical victors. These trophies and prizes, and the 30-40 Mystery Draw gifts were the result of the continued generosity of the tournament sponsors: Pattaya Sports Club, Cafe Kronborg, Papa Ray, Blue Parrot Bar and Restaurant, Tequila Reef Cantina, Shenanigans Fun Pub, Rosie O’Grady’s, PolTony’s Gourmet Restaurant & Fairplay MiniGolf, and the Diana Group’s Green Bottle Pub. Many thanks to each of them for making this unique tournament one that all the PSC members look forward to.

Next month’s Members’ Tournament is scheduled for September 14 at Siam Country Club. Sign up for the tournament will open on Monday the 4th of September, at the new Pattaya Sports Club Clubhouse on Third Road. Start putting your foursomes together now!

Fitness Tips: Fatness, fitness and fatality (part 2)

by David Garred
Club Manager Dusit Resort Sports Club

Last week we finished with the ‘American paradox’, which could be used to describe a similar conundrum in the US. Why are Americans getting increasingly fatter, while their daily fat intake appears to be decreasing? The phenomenon has led some prominent medical researchers to question whether fat in the diet really is important as a cause of obesity.

To test this in practice, scientists from five centers in Europe established a large-scale study to compare the differences between a high fat and high carbohydrate diet on body weight and cholesterol in 400 overweight to obese people. The study, titled CARMEN (Carbohydrate Ratio Management in European National diets) allowed people in three groups access to supermarkets mimicking the real life shopping situation set up in laboratories with either normal (high fat), low fat and simple carbohydrate, or low fat and high complex carbohydrate diets. The low fat diets constituted a10% decease in fat from the standard diet.

Total food intake in both of the high carbohydrate groups dropped, and alcohol intake remained similar to the control group suggesting that less total energy is eaten when fat is reduced in the diet. There was also an average decrease in body weight of 1-2 kg in the high carbohydrate groups and an increase of 1 kg in the high fat group over the 6 months of the trial. There was also no change in cholesterol levels in any group.

Explaining the ‘American paradox’

So, how to explain the American paradox. According to Dr. Win Saris of the Maastricht University in Holland who coordinated the CARMEN study, there are three possible explanations:

1. Records of food intake are notoriously poor and hence the fall in fat in the diet for the nation as a whole may be spurious;

2. Decreases in physical activity due to increased technology may have compensated for any decreases in energy intake, and/or

3. There has been an increase in total food intake, which would compensate for the decrease in fat.

It’s known that serving sizes in the US have increased to compensate for decreases in fat. It’s possible that awareness of the effects of fat may not extend to an awareness of total food intake. In any case, the CARMEN results don’t give joy to food manufacturers producing high fat foods that thought they may have been let off the hook by the ‘American paradox’.

Pretty clear what direction needs to be taken up here.

Women's World Challenge Volleyball finals this weekend

The finals of the Women’s World Challenge Beach Volleyball will be held this Sunday, September 3 in front of the Pattaya Park Hotel, beginning at 3 p.m. The tournament began on August 29, and the competition runs daily until the finals on September 3.

Twenty-four leading women’s beach volleyball teams from around the world are competing for cash prizes totaling $30,000 (USD). The event is being held at the same venue the beach volleyball event took place during the last Asian Games.

Ratanaporn Alaisuk and Manatsanant Phaengkha from the Thai national women’s team are amongst the competitors at the event.

Pattaya is supporting the event by providing an estimated B360,000 for hotel accommodations and meals for the 90 players and officials involved in the games.

The Pentangle Company is in charge of promoting and organizing the competition. Pepsi and GSM have been identified as the main sponsors. The National Volleyball Association is attending to the volleyball court areas on the beach.

Old heads and young legs win the day at Natural Park

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Bunker

On Tuesday, 21st August, the Bunker boys and girls went to Natural Park Resort for their weekly medal competition. The day was very hot and humid and the greens were lightning fast.

The field was divided into two flights and in division one there was a tie for first place between the consistent Mam Trayling and the Exocet, Ken Lill. Mam showed us all that she is a very fine golfer when she shot a net 72, whilst Ken, recently returned from a long golf-free spell in England, matched her with net 72. It was as if he had never been away.

In division two the ever improving Tyrone Renggli scored a net 73 to take the top prize. Tyrone is still young and we hope to see him coming down the handicap lists in the near future, to maybe single figures. Second came that old hand, Len Jones, who shot net 77. Although he is not so young Len is also coming down the handicap list regularly.

Nearest-the-pin awards went to Len Jones, Bill Jones and Mam Trayling. The Bunker Banana Booby was awarded to transport manager, John Preddy, for his dismal net 88. Poor John, it seems he is having problems handling his new handicap. On the practice range there is no one better!

Bunker heroics at Siam and Eastern Star

On Friday, 24th August, the Bunker Boys were well represented at two events. The weekly Stableford competition was held at Siam C.C., for those who love trees and soft greens, and the Thai-Ger Line Anniversary Tournament was held at Eastern Star for those who are partial to water!

At Siam the heroes of the day were Ken Lill (37 points), Ian Phillips (38 points) and Charlie Chen, who topped the pile with 39 points.

Here the nearest-the-pin awards went to Barry Barnes, Chris John and Ian Phillips, whilst the Bunker Banana Booby went again to Gordon McKnight for his refusal to tip his caddy. Such a shame because Anong, his wife, does a splendid job keeping him on the straight and narrow!

Meanwhile, at Eastern Star the Bunker was well represented by John Preddy, Len Jones, Stan Axon, Sunny Ruthsip, Peter and Tyrone Renggli, Ed and Mam Trayling and former Bunker Boy Keith Fortte. The runner-up in the second division was the Kansas whirlwind, Stan “The Man” Axon, who played well to amass 36 points, closely followed in the same group by Len Jones with 34 points. Mam Trayling acquitted herself well again and won two nearest-the-pin awards and Keith and Peter both picked up barrels of beer for their prodigious driving.

Better late than never, Bob wins bragging rights

PSC Golf from Three Sisters

On Monday, golfers from the Three Sisters held their normal Monday morning golf at Siam Country Club. As usual, golfers assembled themselves into groups and teed off. Bob Moberg arrived later than most but it didn’t stop Bob from winning the bragging rights with a credible 40 points.

Don Antonio at 83 years old and holding a 36 handicap came in second with 39 points. At first it was thought that Don Antonio had won the bragging rights, but Big “Mo” snuck in to pull off the win.

The rest of the field struggled with the trees and sand - it was noticed that there were a few 24s and 25s holding up the bottom of the pile. It was also noted that many drives did not get off the tee boxes - a few dribbled their drives while many others found the trees either on the left or right. Hopefully next week will be better for those who golfed with hangovers.

Mystery pair Clare and Hartley clear winners by six

The popular Mystery Pairs Stableford format proved to be very popular with the Shenanigans Very Friendly Golf Society last week. Malcolm Clare and Paul Hartley, with combined drawn scores of 76 Stableford points, won the day by six points.

Ray Woodruffe and Harry Riley were drawn runners-up with 70 points.

Gay Horan expertly drew the scorecards, pairing the 16 players taking part on a dry, hot and windy day. The white tees were forward, giving some help and some different second shots to the shorter hitters - and why not! The Zoyzia problem with the greens is near to being fully resolved and there were very few problems to be encountered, resolved anyway by the local rule in force.

Phil Groves claimed two near pins on holes four and eight, Paul Hartley was nearest on twelve and Bill Hurd on fifteen. Longest first putts went to Banjob Franklin on hole nine and Gay Horan on the eighteenth.

The next Shenanigans Very Friendly Golf Society outing is on September 4th for a Pairs Scramble. Sign-up at Shenanigans.

US Navy nearly scuppers TAGGS

TAGGS Golf from The Haven

Monday 20th August - Eastern Star Resort (Medal)

1st: Mike Franklin, 68
2nd: Norman Brooks, 69
3rd: Jeff McLaury, 71

Mike Franklin won his first tournament at The Haven after 4 years of trying, much to the delight of the rest of the field, although Norman Brooks tried to spoil the party by playing as steadily as he usually does in stroke competitions for 16 holes and then dropping 4 shots over the last two.

Jeff McLaury, having had a gross 39 on the front, fell apart as the round progressed but still managed to finish under par to round out the leader board.

Richard Livingston welcomed back Norman Brooks whilst welcoming newcomer Jean-Pierre Cacarbal from the Basque area of Spain.

Wednesday 22nd August - Khao Kheow (Stableford)

1st: Harry Riley, 41 pts
2nd: Peter Hall, 38 pts
3rd: Jeff McLaury, 37 pts (cb9 21 pts)
4th: Anders Karlsson, 37 pts (cb9 20 pts)

To celebrate the arrival of the US Navy, a large contingent of golfers set out to tame the testing B and C courses at Khao Kheow, and they did rather well, with Wee Harry Riley, still showing good form following his reduction of handicap, leading home first time podium winner Peter Hall, closely trailed by Jeff McLaury and Anders Karlsson.

Back at The Haven, Richard welcomed new members Victor Cheung from Singapore and Ken Johnson from England before many of the golfers departed towards Beach Road weighed down with bits of cloth and pieces of wood to sell to the visitors from the big steel town harboured in the bay. Some returned later to spend their profits celebrating Harry’s win.

Friday 24 August - Phoenix Golf Club (Bogey)

1st: B.J. Smith, 8 up
2nd: Stephen Beard, 5 up
3rd: Roland Piechocki, 4 up (cb9 +3, cb6 +4)
4th: Jimmee Little, 4 up (cb9 +3, cb6 +3)
5th: Harry Riley, 4 up (cb9 +3, cb6 +1)
6th: Doug Campbell, 4 up (cb9 +3, cb6 all square)

After many weeks of shooting in the high 120’s and hitting the ball like a dog, BJ Smith’s first win for over 2 years proved that every dog has its day. The victory sparked off a wild party at The Haven, from which nobody seemed very keen to leave, although the fact that many upstairs rooms in the city were closed could well have been the real reason.

Richard, while welcoming back Larry Ball from Wyoming, was quick to point out that BJ had just completed a lesson with him the previous day.

The Doc lead home the chasing pack whose good scores on any other day would have expected to win the coveted knotted putter trophy.

The Square Ring

by Howie Reed

The Tua bubble has been busted for all time. He’s a nice man that is a one dimensional fighter who had better learn the words, “Would you like fries with that burger” for gainful employment. Joe Goosen is a great trainer but even he couldn’t change the spots on the zebra. Tua got $600,000 USD for his losing effort against Chris “Running” Byrd which will go a long way in the Land of Sheep and Shotgun marriages.

If the IBF (International Boxing Federation) stays it’s course, as it has lately under Joe Dwyer, a contract will be signed for Byrd to fight the winner of the Lewis-Rahman fight by April 15th of next year. The latter fight will be held somewhere in Las Vegas this November 17. Ruiz-Holyfield, “The Bust in Beijing” will follow on the 24th. Do NOT put the “W” in front of Lewis’s name. Remember, a loser is a loser is a loser. By the same token don’t count Bryd as an automatic loser against either fighter. Evander Holyfield started as a “small” heavyweight to become the best of a mediocre crop of heavy’s.

With his current legal troubles over Mike Tyson (48-3, 42KO’s) was to have had a September 8th date with the “Danish Pastry” Brian Nielsen (62-1, 43KO’s) in Copenhagen. Tyson had been charged with “sexual assault” near his Big Bear training camp in California. The authorities found no evidence of a crime. A Tyson spokesman said, “He wasn’t even in the KMART (where the 50 year old women worked). He wasn’t there.” I know how Mike feels. I was in a similar situation with the conception of my first three kids.

The Dane’s only loss was to the ever popular Dick “The Raging Bull” Ryan (23-1) via the 10th round KO route in 99. He reversed that loss last December. Besides the “over inflated” record Nielsen has beaten Larry Holmes, Tim Witherspoon and Orlin Norris. But then so has father time.

As seems to be more commonplace with each day, the fight has been postponed. “A doctor examining Mike said he was suffering from lower back spasms. Mike will slow it down a bit then ease back into his training,” stated advisor Shelly Finkel. Tyson camp sources added that back problems have caused Tyson to miss several days in training before this announcement. A spokesman for Showtime (American Cable Network) said, “I don’t have any reason to doubt or disbelieve the injury,” said Jay Larkin. “But if Tyson wasn’t in training for whatever reason, it is in everyone’s best interest to postpone the fight. As long as he’s not canceling it, we can live with it.” New date is the 13th of October.

The WBA 105-pound champ Chana Porpaoin (44-1-2, 16 KOs), Thailand, must have really been serious about keeping the 105 pound title. He arrived in Japan a full week before his first title defense against Japanese challenger Yutaka Niida (13-0-3, 7 KOs) in Yokohama. Chana annexed the title from Japan’s Keitaro Hoshino with a split decision on April 16. Didn’t work as unbeaten left hooker (refers to the hand not the last at the bar) Yutaka Niida (14-0-3, 7 KOs), Japan, captured the WBA 105-pound title. He danced and pranced and was “given” a hometown unanimous decision. The judges had it 116-113 twice and 116-115.

Rumor sweeping boxing is that Sugar Shane Mosley will leave promoter Credic Kushner for Don King. There may be some substances to the report. Mosley, as the proclaimed pound for pond tops, makes peanuts (3 million) a fight. With King he’d make more. There are only two fights on the horizon where he could make 10 to 11 million. DeLaHoya or Trinidad. Both fights would have to be made by King. This may be the reason that cable giant HBO has rescheduled the proposed fight against Vernon Forest from December to January.

PH3 Run 911

Following the Hash bus down Sukhumvit this week I wondered what the Hares Fini F and Festering Squid Jazzer had in store. Knowing Fini like Lady Di had the same favorite colour, this would somehow figure into the scheme of today’s run. Soon we reached the circle site only to find it was a run down Chinese graveyard.

After the usual prerun warm up period allowing fellow hashers to talk about the last week’s events and to check on Hammer’s new cutie and shoe check, GM for the day Sir Chicken F&%$er called the Hash to order and after the new shoes were christened the Hares came in to explain this week’s run. Fini produced a small pink egg and explained that only one should be picked up by any runner lucky enough to find one.

After pointing in the general direction the FRB’s were off, and less than 20 meters into the run we came on the first check, paper was soon found on the two major trails, Fossil and co in one direction and Charlie Manson off in the other. Only by divine intervention I followed Charlie Manson and as luck would have it I picked the right trail. Soon the paper stopped again close to the site of the new Pattaya airstrip and this is where for me the run took a turn for the worse. Hashers running all over the place like headless chickens trying to find paper. I was off to the left probably 200 meters from the main pack when I heard the call of on paper. By the time I caught up with the back of the pack we were close to a familiar field with the same farmer ploughing his land. At the back was Sir Airhead and Sir Chicken F%$#*er talking about the fate of nations. Ahead I could see a steady trail of walkers and not long after I was in.

Sir Airhead with his cardboard clipboard noted down potential sinners or new hash names. Fossil was beaming with the thought of imminent knighthood, Sister Sam and Chicken Nugget generally getting in every ones way and C Face and Rottweiler were selling all the wares of the PH3 haberdasher.

Sir CF called in the masses and announced that he was looking for guest GM’s for the upcoming weeks’ circles. Is this a possible audition for a future GM? I ask myself, so come on all you hopefuls show us you can entertain the crowd with good rhetoric and light hearted humor.

First order of business was the Twiggy raffle, hats off to the hasher who picked up the yearbook, we only have 349 left. For a change I don’t think Uncle Fester won anything, so after dispensing the prizes and down downs the GM handed over the circle to Fini to hand out the gifts for the lucky few who had found an egg. I never found out what they gave out, but it was obviously not enough to bribe sufficient for what came later.

After a good song from the hash choir the circle was finally given to Sir Airhead who soon had the now quivering hares on the ice. Charges were called from the disgruntled mob for hash s@#t, so Sir Airhead like a New York lawyer read the charges about using a sacred place for a hash circle and running through graveyards, etc. The hares were accused of angering the gods and the only choice the hash was given was to try and appease the gods and to stop the onslaught was to cry Hash S@#t. Two hats were soon produced and graciously Sir Airhead omitted the customary ice-cold water for such occasions. The hares were soon ushered out of the circle, but the wind was picking up at an alarming pace and as most of my flock had departed to the safety of the truck before the rain came in torrents. About this time when the first heavy drops began to fall I made an exit stage right and headed for the safety of cover and the trip home. Believing in that old saying there is no such thing as a bad hash I’ll be back next week.
