Army punishes Panthers at home

Story and photo by Brendan Richards

The Pattaya Panthers, fresh after a 5 month break from play and in their new jerseys sponsored by Shenanigans, played an awesome match against a visiting Sri Lanka Army team.

Sri Lanka won the toss and team captain Ajith Peireis elected to kick off. The Panthers responded with a spectacular try by Chris Kays in the opening minutes, which was converted to put the home side in front.

Rumblin, fumblin, tumblin - wild action in the Pattaya Panthers vs. Sri Lanka Army rugby match

Not to be taken lightly, the visitors fought back with a beautiful intercept by number 11. Vijitha took the ball from the halfway mark and scored under the posts, and with conversion brought the Army on even footing with the home side.

The Panthers fought back with another try by Chris Kays, and with conversion, the home side was back in front. But by the end of the first half, the Sri Lanka team had evened the score.

The second half was full of fast and furious play, and when the full-time whistle was blown, the Sri Lanka Army had proved to be too strong for the Panthers, winning by a final score of 28 to 21.

Later, back at Shenanigans, Panthers captain Adrian Sparrow presented the ‘Man of the Match’ Award to Ajith Peireis, captain of the Sri Lanka team. Both sides were then entertained by a Sri Lanka ditty, closely followed by the Panthers’ ‘Home Boys’.

Angela Engel takes top honors in PSC Sunday lake fishing

Angela Engel, fishing in the Pattaya Sports Club Sunday saltwater lake fishing competition landed a very nice three and one half pound grouper. Angela, along with twelve other PSC fishing members, landed approximately eighty nice, mostly small mouth, white sea bass. Most of the fish were in the one to two pound range.

Angela Engel took top honors in the recent PSC Sunday lake fishing outing.

The PSC group was fishing at the new Pattaya saltwater lake fishing park located just five minutes south of Pattaya on the Sattahip Highway. The inland lake is filled with seawater each day, and stocked with marine fish. The fish include white sea bass, grouper, cobia, shark, rays, and many more fish from the sea.

The fishing park is very popular with the members of the PSC fishing section. Sundays are there favorite day to fish. Many members take their children there for a wonderful day out fishing. For more information contact Carl Engel, PSC fishing chairman, phone 038-410-228, fax 038-426-121, or e-mail [email protected]

Come on out and join the fun.

Volvo revs up for the Volvo Women’s Open 2000

Volvo Car (Thailand) is joined by the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand under His Majesty’s Patronage, Kuwait Petroleum (Thailand) or Q8, Dusit Resort Pattaya and other main sponsors, in hosting one of the most prestigious sports events in the country.

Thailand’s Tamarine Tanasukarn (left) and Benjamas Saengaram will take to the Dusit courts to contend for the Volvo Women’s Open 2000 title.

Volvo Car (Thailand) takes center court once again as it announces the “Volvo Women’s Open 2000", the only World Tennis Association (WTA) tournament to take place in Thailand. More than 150 female tennis players from over 30 countries will join the event to be held from November 11 to 19, 2000 at the outdoor tennis courts of the Dusit Resort in Pattaya. A total of US$110,000, or nearly 5 million baht in prize money will be at stake.

Each year, the tournament attracts a large number of participants due to its good reputation and popularity with players on the WTA Tour. This year, the Volvo Women’s Open will bring together over 150 professional female players from 30 countries and will include some of the most recognized names in tennis including Silvija Talaja (#24 WTA ranking), Ai Sugiyama (#26), last year’s first runner up Anne Kremer (#36), and Iva Majoli, former French Open Champion. Thailand’s very own Tamarine Tanasukarn and Benjamas Saengaram will also be marching to the courts in Pattaya to display their world-class talents.

Now in its 12th consecutive year, the Volvo Women’s Open has become one of Thailand’s most significant sports events. The final match will be broadcast live on November 19 at 4 pm on ITV Channel.

Mr Karl-Johan Sandesjo, President of Volvo Car (Thailand) Ltd, expressed his enthusiasm over this year’s tournament. “Each year, tennis fans nationwide look forward to the Volvo Women’s Open 2000. Volvo Car (Thailand) once again underscores its commitment to sports and the company’s global concept Volvo For Life. Holding such a prestigious sports event in Thailand can only have positive repercussions on the country’s youth, who will see how patience and determination can help them achieve their goals,” he said.

This year, Volvo Car (Thailand) is joined and supported by the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand Under His Majesty’s Patronage, Kuwait Petroleum (Thailand) or Q8, Dusit Resort Pattaya, Reebok, Wilson, CoolMax, AXA Insurance, Coca-Cola, Channel [V] 102.5 FM, PricewaterhouseCoopers ABAS, Volvo Leasing, Triumph, Vivien Diamond, Nestle Pure Life.

The Volvo Women’s Open 2000 will coincide with the Volvo Adventure Rally, a friendly, fun-filled trip organized for Volvo car owners and their families coming to Pattaya for the weekend of the grand finals.

This Volvo-hosted tournament, played annually in Thailand since 1989, will be an excellent opportunity for Thai and Asian players to develop their skills by playing with other top-seeded players, and for tennis fans in the country to view a World Tennis Association competition live in Thailand.

Fitness Tips: Mystery bike rider (part two)

by David Garred
Club Manager Dusit Resort Sports Club

Have you figured out who our “mystery bike rider” is yet? Let’s reiterate: Picture a guy who has not exercised for the sake of exercise since high school, some 30 odd years ago, has worked in the pub / bar industry his entire life and drinks a fair amount of alcohol every single work night. The only regular activity would be Hash House Harriers (again a fair amount of beer and cheer) running at a comfortable speed (once a week) and running up and down the touchline at Panthers Rugby matches (once every 2 months).

Picture Kim Fletcher, publican of Shenanigans. Kim challenged himself to complete the 50 km sponsored bike ride at the Jesters Fair. He spoke to me about this after 2 weeks of his training for the event with only 2 and a half weeks to go. Kim was very proud of himself, and rightly so, as he had that morning completed a 25 km training ride he asked for and I gave him some advice on how to ensure he could train up to and complete the ride with the remaining time he had.

During this time Kim was asking every single person on the planet to sponsor him on this bike ride. This achieved 2 things, firstly Kim raised a somewhat healthy amount of cash for the kids (I write, intentionally downplaying the amount) and secondly many people around town were guilt tripped into not only entering in the ride but also completing the 50 km course after going past the 25 km turnoff. People were saying, “If Kim Fletcher can do it then so can I.”

They did. 93 Riders on the on the day, all sponsored to one extent or another. contributed over 470,000 baht to local children charities. Kim Fletcher raised more than 1/4 of that alone, 143,000 baht. Give Kim a pat on the back next time you see him.

After our Shenanigans publican crossed the finish line on the 50 km ride, he took time out to recover, then later that night at the pub asked me what a bike ride of 25 km 2 times a week would do for his physical condition. Running through my head at that time were the basic principals of physical fitness improvement: F.I.T.T. - Frequency, Intensity, Time, Type.

I told Kim that at this stage of training, 4 rides a week of 12.5-13 km would be much better for him than his suggested 2 x 25 km rides. He jumped at the option; the increase in frequency will give him greater benefit and he said he could do that easily.

Frequent but regular low intensity exercise will produce some tangible results, while semi-frequent, though still regular, higher intensity exercise will give cardiovascular stimulation but will not help with weight loss (fat burning).

It is fantastic to see someone enjoying a lifestyle change and jumping at the opportunity to convert to truly productive training.

So what has he done: raised an obscene amount of money for charity, completed a none too easy first serious exercise goal coming from only 4 real weeks of exercise in 30 years, and decided to take better care of himself as a result of enjoying achieving that goal. What a legend.

Neck and Neck at Phoenix

Pattaya Golf Society from the Bunker

On October 27, fittingly twenty-seven golfers from the Bunker took the short trip to the beautiful Phoenix Golf Club to play a three-man scramble. Fifteen percent of each team’s combined handicap was taken and the outcome could not have been closer.

A good day was only marred by a heavy thunderstorm, which decided to arrive with about two holes to go. Undeterred, everyone continued to play through it.

In third place was the husband and wife team of Ken and Betty Lill, with Colin Wilkes, scoring net 63.75. The Scandinavian team of Magnus, Tom and Pierre returned 61.05, just losing out to Bunker regulars Wilf Latham, Len Jones and George Meigh, who scored 60.95.

At the celebration back at the Bunker everyone agreed the format was a splendid one and it was suggested that this kind of tournament was ideal for the last Friday of each month. Everybody is welcome.

Magnus and Fireman Danny burn hot at Treasure Hill

On October 31, the Bunker boys went to Treasure Hills for a Stableford competition. On a surprisingly dry day this long and testing course proved once again how difficult golf can be.

In division one Magnus Johansson took the honours with the only level par round of the day. His 36 points edged out Paul “Houdini” Butler, who fired 34 points.

In division two Danny Greer once again came out on top with 34 points, just pipping Steve Rose, on 33 points. Danny put his victory down to his new clubs which were a present from his Mum. Twenty-five points on the back nine also helped! Steve Rose is a rapidly improving player and we are all expecting a rapid reduction in the future.

Near-the-pin winners were “Houdini”, Bill Jones, Danny Greer and holidaymaker Roy Mann.

Amazing what you can do in the rain with three clubs and a putter!

Shenanigans Very Friendly Golf Society

Shenanigans Very Friendly Golf Society teed off on Tuesday October 31st for a Four Club Pairs Aggregate competition at ‘Home Course’, Eastern Star. The course was still suffering somewhat from the excessive rain, and with Loy Krathong only days away.

However, in only light rain for about half the round and an overcast sky, and the wet course playing exceptionally long, 24 Shenanigans’ members faced the challenge armed with just 3 clubs and a putter. Amazing how creative you can be with very few clubs.

Tony Stevens and George (One Ball) Jackson returned the best score of the day with an aggregate 61 Stableford points. Close behind and runners-up were Mike and Banjob Franklin with a very creditable 59 points.

Paul Kraft claimed two near pins with Banjob and George Jackson the other two. Long putts were sunk by amazing Dene Mundy and Shenanigans convivial landlord, Kim (love my shorts) Fletcher. All winning food and beverage vouchers for Shenanigans, with Kim especially being excited about getting one of those!

Next outing of Shenanigans Very Friendly Golf Society is on November 14th for an Aggregate Two Ball Stableford competition which, by popular request, will qualify for handicap review. Sign-up at Shenanigans.

For anybody playing regularly at Eastern Star, there are special benefits you can get by joining the Eastern Star Resort Frequent Golfer Club. The club card is free on request at the pro-shop reception and every time you play you earn points for golf, accessories, meals and lodging. 10 points for every paid round you play, so the points accumulate quickly. Pick up a leaflet at Eastern Star or Shenanigans.

Dabber takes two of three

TAGGS... golf from The Haven

Monday, October 30 - Laem Chabang International Country Club (Stableford)

1st: Mike Dabanovich, 39 points
2nd: George Jackson, 30 points
3rd: Bob Pearce, 26 points

Laem Chabang invited the gentlemen from The Haven to play the B/C combo, and then ate their lunch. Except for Mike Dabanovich. No course is eating Dabber’s lunch these days. He’s chewing up courses and spitting out the seeds.

On Monday, October 30, Mike had 39 Stableford points to win another TAGGS Knotted Putter trophy and earn the distinction of being referred to with the “F” word. That’s used when somebody asks “Who won”? And the response is “Effing Dabber again”!

Wednesday, November 1 - Phoenix Golf and Country Club (Stroke Play)

1st: Wilf Latham, 76 net
2nd: Philippe Berra, 78 net C/B
3rd: Brian Kelly, 78 net

The Alternative Gentlemen’s Golf Society celebrated All Souls Day with a stroke play competition at Phoenix. And what a bunch of “lost souls” it was that breezed around the Mountain and the Lakes in gale force winds. All those witches flying around on Halloween the night before must have stirred things up. No one could do better than four over par and under the conditions that was a damned good score.

Wilf Latham shot a 93 off seventeen to win the contest with a 76 net. That score included a nine on the last hole of the day, the par 5 ninth hole on the Lakes. Without knowing what went wrong on that hole, a good guess would be by the time of the day’s last tee shot, Wilf had already been blown away by the wind that did not let up all day.

Friday, November 3 - Pattaya Country Club (Bogey)

1st: Mike Dabanovich, 2 Down
2nd: George Jackson, 4 Down
3rd: Stephen Beard, 4 Down

If you have never seen a well-struck lob shot take four big bounces on a green, then go play Pattaya Country Club. Their greens have always been hard, but after three days of high winds they were as receptive as a concrete parking lot. The greens coupled with the breezy conditions made for a tough day, and tough guy Mike Dabanovich won the TAGGS Bogey competition by a score of 2 down.

“Dabber” was supposed to be gone from Pattaya and on his way to Saudi Arabia. His plans have been on a short-time hold and that’s too bad because we’re running out of bad things to say about him. We could try and say some nice things about him, and in fact he is one helluva nice guy. He hits the ball a country mile, and now that his short game is coming together, he has unlimited potential. Of course, after a stint in Saudi, he won’t be coming back to Pattaya with golf on his mind.

Swanson in the winner’s circle again

Golf from Gafe Kronborg

Monday, October 30 - Century Chonburi (Stableford)

Stableford was the game, the Century Chonburi layout was the venue for a happy crowd from the Kronborg on Monday, October 30.

John Swanson was in the winner’s circle (again); the irrepressible Arthur Bailey was 2nd with 34 points followed by Eddie Biggs with 32.

Thursday, November 2 - Phoenix (stroke)

Kronborg golf enjoyed a good turnout at Phoenix for a stroke competition on Thursday, November 2.

Phillipe Berra took 1st prize with a net 72, followed by Anders Peterson net 73 and Derek Brook 3rd with a net 74.

B flight was won by Walter Hanak’s net 68, whilst big Pete Galle finished 2nd with a net 72 and Frank Polizzotto came third with a net 74.

Near pins were won by Darren Robson on M4, Janove Hagman on M8, Derek Brook on L2 and Walter Hanak on L7.

Venues for next week are Treasure Hills on Monday the 13th followed by Khao Kheow on Thursday the 16th.

Jerry Lien follows driver to victory

Three Sisters Golf

On Monday the 30th, golfers from the Three Sisters met up at their usual venue, Siam Country Club. There were three new faces in the group - Vic Cross, Jimmy Little and Bobby Clark.

Although Bobby had retired his clubs for about 10 years or longer, he took them out of mothballs and really hit the ball pretty darn good. Bobby has announced that he will be golfing more in the future. Vic Cross and Jimmy Little enjoyed their first game with the group and we hope that they will take part in more Monday Fun Golf.

Jerry Lien again won bragging rights with 36 points. Jerry bought a new driver which he claims has elevated his game to a new level. He is hitting the new driver long and straight - for how long this miracle will last, only Jerry knows. We are all praying for Jerry and in hopes that his handicap will come down so we will have a chance at the bragging rights.

Fast Eddie, coming off the rig, made off with second place. Although he hacked up the course pretty bad, he did manage to get 35 points. Dene Mundy was disqualified for turning in his scorecard too late - we already had enough beers and were ready to make our next move. Dene apologized for his late card but we think his caddy trashed it - was it that bad?

The rest of the field managed to finish the round just before the rain started. Scores were not the best due to wet conditions, but if Gerry Carpenter could have putted better he might have been in the running. The rest of the golfers just enjoyed their game and the beers later.

PH3 Run #869 - The Halloween Run

Monday run again. Sign up at the Scandi Bar and off we go. The heavy raining during the day made the group unusually small for the season. No doubt the massive downpour made at least 50 runners choose the indoors comfort of their homes instead. Now where’s the Hash spirit?

Hares C. Face and Festering Streaker were sporting new names especially for today: Count C and Frankenstreaker. After all, this was the Halloween Run. Knowing what happened last week the hares had secured an A-site that was covered. Good thinking guys.

Even though Hammer didn’t show there were 4 pairs of new shoes around the circle. They were swiftly dealt with. Eastern Seaboard shoe industry must really like the PH3. Hares told us to pass some cattle with caution, don’t run. They also assured us that the newly laid paper should be easy to spot even though they feared there might be a couple of stretches where the paper had been washed away during the day. It starts over there, let’s go!

I teamed up with Teeny Weeny, which is usually a good thing to do if you feel like finding your way around the run whilst covering a somewhat shorter distance than the FRB’s. Even though we were the last 2 to leave the A-site and then went down the first FT we soon found ourselves at the very front. As the FRB’s hurdled by they almost trampled us yelling that we should get out of their way. That some of ‘em have loud comments about Teeny Weeny being upfront was only expected.

Later, when the pack rushed right, following paper, Teeny Weeny said: Let’s turn left, mate! So we did and after we managed to negotiate our way through some thick vegetation and a barbed wire fence we soon found paper enabling us to return in style, on paper, some 10 minutes ahead of the first runner. Gracefully and with our heads held high, just like the fine pair of athletes we are, we returned to the A-site in triumph. Teeny Weeny, you delivered again (Never mind last week’s little mishap).

Back at the A-site the usual servings. Ewok doing her raffle duties, this week 10 winners were drawn. The excitement consisted of a Norwegian shipping clerk, later to be named F Dog, who created havoc as he kicked over the beercan ring bucket, to everybody’s dismay. Guess what, you gonna have to take a seat on the ice for that one! Dr Pinky, after already winning a prize tried to claim a second prize, which of course is a no-no. Ice time for him. After that the circle got going with the usual returners, visitors and virgins. Prizes for best Halloween costumes were awarded to the always scary looking Charlie Manson (back to back wins in that category for Charlie) while the ladies class trophy was given to Katoey A M. Well, there is that katoey connection I guess.

The hares too had their Halloween gear on. Countless people commented on Count C’s impressive Count Dracula mask. From what I could pick up the majority of the pack found it to be a major improvement and that C should consider wearing it on a more permanent basis. Boy George stepped into the circle and initiated the down downs. Chicken F back again putting Terminal Foreskin on ice for being a cheap bastard telling us how he once (?) refused to pay the lady at a pay toilet 2 baht, simply because upon entering he found that he couldn’t go! Pitiful, T4.

Salvatore and Obewan were in a group being iced for being wankers. Chicken S had to sit down and explain how he has managed to keep a pair of underwear for 37 years! Charlie Manson got himself wet when Chicken Nugget, on Charlie’s shoulders, decided to release some urinal pressure. Charlie got iced with recommendations to send Chicken Nugget to toilet training.

C Face/Count C was awarded his 100th run shirt. Well done Agent C as the shirt said. Tadpole’s birthday last week was celebrated with a song. Chicken F doing an excellent job as usual with the songs. Later he sang a very revealing song about what we all do to Stella when Yao Yao’s away. Outstanding, the circle exploded in laughter. CF himself a bit of a handful just to refrain from giggling during the song. Now that the secret was out in the open, everybody felt comfortable with putting Yao Yao on the ice for doing the Hash Hymn in Hindi.

Last week’s run was scrutinised. Many people pointed to Tampax as the culpritator in terms of leading a group the wrong way, but the response to that was that Tampax is now a leader of sheep, not men. However, Double Hash S@#t and triple down downs for Tampax. He was also presented with a new Hash S@!#t hat, jester type, where the down downs were poured.

Besides F Dog, another Norwegian guy was named Ahopper whereas his lady’s name was Genie. Then Sir Airhead promoted the upcoming Egg Wars, this Sunday. Sign up at TQ1 or 2. This is great fun, come join us. Go Red Team! At this point all Aussies got iced for being Aussies. Convict descendants, that is. Sir Airhead also told us parts of what happened at the Songkla H3 1000th, from where he just returned with 8 PH3 ladies. For one thing he said that the girls down there were dead ugly. I wouldn’t take ‘em to a dog fight, he exclaimed. Whereas, as we all agreed upon and already knew, the Pattaya Hash has the best and prettiest girls you could find anywhere on this planet. Yeah!

Katoey A M was iced in a plea for a new name. Being a compassionate group of hashers we decided that his new name would in fact also be Katoey A M. Why would anyone wanna change such a charming name, I wonder?

Pegleg’s father was on the run. A jury consisting of 6 girls ruled that the older of the two, and hence the father, was Pegleg. This to everybody’s amusement. Without hesitation we named Pegleg’s dad Son of Pegleg.

Buttweasel the took a seat on the ice for being a leaver. He’s off to St Martin in the near future which means that Who Ate All The Pies is gonna have to attend to The Rover’s Return on a more frequent basis from now on, doing double duties. Pace yourself, my friend. Vietnamese Violator got recognition for 50 runs and Boy George for 5 Hares. Well done, lads!

Happy Hour at TQ1 where the pack, as expected, enjoyed themselves guzzling beer and digging into the hot dogs that were served. At this hour things started to get real blurry. Let’s just say the party was definitely on. S Stayin, thanks for helping me with some of names. I just came back, haven’t been on a run since December last year, which means that keeping track of names is tricky. All in all, great fun yet again on the Pattaya Hash. My respect to the hares and the mismanagement who with their commitment and personal efforts make up the core of the spirit that makes our Hash so strong and full of life, week in week out. I for one feel privileged to be a part of PH3.
