C.P. Seven Eleven invites families to attend a Reading Camp at Suan Sampharn

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction Development in association with C.P. Seven Eleven public Co., Ltd. will be hosting a Reading Camp for families later this month at the Rose Garden Hotel Suan Samphran in Nakhon Pathom to encourage children to love reading and to strengthen their relationships with their families.

The reading camp will take place on November 25 from 8.30 a.m. to 5.45 p.m. A bus will depart the Ministry of Education for the Rose Garden Hotel Suan Samphran at 9.30 a.m. The director-general of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction Development will chair the opening ceremony.

The day at Suan Samphran will include a seminar entitled Encouraging Children To Read, anchored by Watana Boonsanur and featuring academic-affairs experts Prof. Khunying Manmas Chawalit, Gesorn Charoenrak, Nongnual Phongphaiboon, Pornarnogn Niyomka, Supphakit Nimmarnnorathep and the parents of children who study at schools run by the Department of General Education, the Department of Vocational Education, and the Office of Bangkok Education. There will also be a crocodile-wrestling show and elephant show complete with dramatic sounds and narration.

Korsak Chairasmisak, chairman, executive board of directors and CEO of C.P. Seven Eleven said, “Reading camp is an educational activity of ours that is supported by the Ministry of Education, Department of Local Administration, and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. We have hosted this activity since 1997.

“C.P. Seven Eleven organizes reading camps once a month in order to teach children about the value of books and self-learning - and to encourage families to read together. Reading camps encourage the ideal of a well-read society,” said Mr. Korsak.

The Minister of Education Somsak Prisananuntakul said, “Personally, I love reading. I read all kinds of books, short stories, features, novels and poems. I think reading widens my knowledge. I always encourage my children to read and like to watch as they develop their reading skills. Parents should tell stories to their children every night and when they are a little older, encourage them to read books with pictures. This makes it possible for their children’s imagination to take flight. Parents should also show children that they, too, love reading by reading newspapers, magazines and books. Then, children will imitate their parents’ behavior.”

C.P. Seven Eleven and the Department of Curriculum and Instruction Development are offering places on this reading camp to children aged between 10 and 18 and their parents (three people per family). To qualify, one member of the family must write a letter about their reading experiences, enclosing their name, address, phone number and, if applicable, e-mail address, and send it to: C.P. Seven Eleven PCL, 20th floor, C.P. Tower, Silom road, Bang Rak, Bangkok, Fax it on 02 - 638-2680, or e-mail it to [email protected] by November 15. For more details, call 02 - 631-0231 ext. 1628-9.

The reading camp committee will decide who will join this camp on November 17. The families chosen will be informed by telephone call. All activities at the camp will be free-of-charge.

Survival Swimming at the International School of the Regents

Swimming is a very important aspect of the sports agenda at the ISR, and the excellent facilities, particularly the large, well-appointed pool, are popular with students at all levels throughout the school.

First...blow up your trousers!

As part of the extra-curricular activity programme, Primary pupils recently gained their bronze award certificates for ‘Survival Swimming’.

Even the most accomplished swimmers may at one time suffer the misfortune of finding themselves in deep water with nowhere to go! Staying alive in such a situation requires not only confidence and stamina, but also the ability to keep a clear head and employ basic survival techniques - and the young swimmers at the ISR proved to be up to the challenge!

ISR students demonstrate the art of survival.

The activity was a very demanding one and involved endurance swimming using both front and back strokes, surface dives through hoops set in the deep end and jumping into the pool without allowing the head to go under the water. Swimming whilst dressed and treading water for five minutes was a particularly gruelling, important part of the award, as was being able to inflate a pair of trousers in order to produce a makeshift, but highly effective, float!

At the end of the day, the cool, clear water of the ISR pool settled, undisturbed and inviting whilst the young survivors, homeward bound, took with them skills that may sometime save their life as well as the lives of others.

International School of the Regents host Touring Team

Lancing College, a prestigious English private school, have recently completed a successful six match tour of Thailand.

The combined International Schools squad

Whilst hosted by the International School of the Regents in Pattaya they played two games; one against a combined team from our three local international schools ISR, ISE and GIS, the other against a team from Nong Prue Youth Club.

Both games were highly entertaining with the different styles of football played by the teams being very evident. The contrast between the long ball and chase tactics of the English boys and the deft passing game of the local teams was quite marked. Lancing won the game against the Combined International Schools by six goals to three and were lucky to snatch a draw against Nong Prue with a last minute equaliser.

At the after match dinner, held at the Cosy Beach Hotel, all present were enthralled by Foster Wheeler’s John Donachie, who proved to be a knowledgeable and witty speaker. ISR’s headmaster, Mr Simon Leslie, also spoke, thanking the players for the sporting manner in which the games were played. He also mentioned that one of the most pleasing aspects was that this was the first time GIS, ISR and ISE students had combined into one team and that an exciting precedent had been set for future cooperation between the schools.
