City all set for 2014 Marathon weekend
Pattaya mayor Itthiphol
Kunplome (standing center) poses with organizers, city officials and
sponsors following a July 9 press conference to announce details of this
weekend’s King’s Cup Pattaya Marathon.

The streets and sidewalks of Pattaya will be reverberating to the
sound of thousands of pattering footsteps early Sunday morning, July 27, as
the city gears up to play host to the 23rd edition of the King’s Cup Pattaya
Marathon.
Some 10,000 plus participants, including pro-athletes, weekend runners,
joggers and walkers are expected to make the start line at this year’s
event, making it one of the biggest sporting events in the kingdom that
involves public participation.
Both city and TAT officials are hopeful that the marathon will act as a
springboard to restore confidence and attract more tourists to the area
following the ending of the nationwide military curfew last month. It is
anticipated that the race alone could bring in up to 50 million baht in
additional tourism revenue for local hotels and restaurants.
As always, the marathon will be accompanied by the usual forms of peripheral
entertainment including live music, dancing and market stalls along Beach
Road throughout the weekend.
This year’s route for the runners will follow a similar path to the 2013
event. The marathon route (Red on the map) will take the runners and
wheelchair athletes north from the start point opposite Central Beach
shopping mall on Beach Road out onto Sukhumvit Road before heading towards
Sattahip as far as the Wat Khao Cheejan turn-off and then back to Pattaya
via Jomtien and Khao Phratamnak.
The half marathon (Yellow) and quarter marathon (Green) will follow a
similar route except that runners will turn for home at Soi Wat Boon and the
South Pattaya Road respectively before heading back via Jomtien Beach and
Pattaya Central Road.
A separate 5km fun run/micro marathon will follow a circuitous route along
North Road, Third Road and Central before ending back at the start-finish
point.
Start times for the various races are listed as follows: wheelchair racers
leave at 3:30 a.m., full-marathon runners at 3:45 a.m., half-marathoners at
5:30 a.m., and quarter marathoners at 6.00 a.m. Participants in the 5km.
“fun run” and walk will depart at 6:15 a.m. All races are expected to be
over by 9:45 a.m.
Runners in the full race will be segregated by gender and into five age
brackets: 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-and-up. In addition to cash prizes
and trophies for the first four athletes in each race category, there also
will be a 50,000 baht bonus paid to anyone breaking the current Pattaya
Marathon record (male 2.19.35) and (female 2.42.41) or 100,000 baht if the
Thai national all-comers records are broken, currently (male 2.12.32) and
(female 2.21.41).
Registration in Pattaya is open until July 26. Applications are being
accepted at the Tourism Promotion Office at Pattaya City Hall, Athletic
Association of Thailand offices, nationwide running clubs, schools,
government agencies and state enterprises.
Prices for entry into the various races are 2,800 for the full marathon (but
only 1,000 baht for Thai nationals), 2,500 baht for the half-race (800 baht
for Thais) and 2,000 baht, or if Thai, 500 baht for the quarter marathon.
The “fun run” is free.
Online registration can be made at Pattaya-Marathon. net or for more
information call 038-251-128 in Pattaya or 02-669-6645 in Bangkok.

Change of date for Pattaya Women’s Tennis Open
Germany’s Sabine Lisicki is shown in action at
the 2013 PTT Pattaya Open.
The 2015 PTT Pattaya Open, WTA professional women’s tennis tournament will
be held one week later next year from the 08-15 February, as the Fed Cup

Thani Hotel, Pattaya.
Tournament Director Geoffrey Rowe said that “the event moving back one week
will not make any significant difference to the field for the 2015 PTT
Pattaya Open. We are currently looking into player commitment for the

signed up by the end of the US Open in August.”
The 2015 PTT Pattaya Open, will continue the tradition of being staged at

Pattaya schools stage mini
World Cup to keep kids off drugs
Jetsada Homklin
Students from 14 Pattaya-area schools are running their own local
version of the World Cup in the two-week Anti-Drugs Youth Football
Tournament.
Playing out at the Pattaya Youth Sports Center through July 30, the
tournament hosts teams from Pattaya schools No. 1-10, Aksornthepsit, Aksorn
Pattaya, Sutrawast, and Pattaya-Arunothai schools.
Like the just-concluded FIFA World Cup competition, the tournament began
July 15 with a group round in which four teams play each other once, with
the top two teams advancing to the knockout round, in which tied games are
decided by penalty shoot-outs.
City Councilman Phial Arromchuen presided over the July 8 group draw for the
two divisions of no more than 16 sides. The first division is for boys ages
14 and under, while the second division was for boys ages 15-16.
The tournament has been organized to encourage Pattaya’s teenagers to better
utilize their free time and stay away from drugs, as well as showcase talent
that could comprise Pattaya’s team at the next local-organization games.

Double victory for Stuvik at Silverstone
Sandy Stuvik (center)
celebrates on the podium after double success at Silverstone.
Thai racing ace Sandy Stuvik dominated the EuroFormula
Open round 5 at the British Silverstone Circuit last weekend. With two
victories in a row, Stuvik moves up to 188 points in the championship,
against second placed contender Alex Palou from Spain with 168.
The victory was hard fought for Stuvik though, as the Italian RP Motorsport
Team struggled for pace during Friday’s testing, but by Saturday morning
Stuvik was again the man to beat in the rain. For the wet qualifying session
the Thai driver held pole position until the very end, when Palou managed to
go slightly faster and take the top starting position. In the first race
however, Stuvik shot into the lead and pulled away from the following group
almost immediately. He would take the checkered flag with an 8 second lead
over Palou while Israel’s Yarin Stern finished in third.
For Sunday’s second race, which was run in dry conditions, Stuvik secured a
solid pole position, over two tenths ahead of P2 sitter Yarin Stern. As the
red lights went out, it was Stern who would make the best start and claimed
the lead into the first corner. Stuvik gave chase immediately and mid way
through the first lap he was able to overtake the Israeli driver, allowing
Palou to get past as well. What followed was a long intense race between
Stuvik and Palou, as they would be locked in an intense battle until the
last lap. In the end, Thailand’s young driving hope scored his second win of
the weekend, with Palou having to settle for second and Stern third.
Stuvik commented after the race: “I was very happy to take my second win for
the weekend, with my rear tires fading fast towards the end of the race I
knew Alex would be pushing me hard. I am delighted to take two victories
with me from the legendary Silverstone Circuit. The next circuit Spa
Francorchamps is definitely one of my favorite circuits, but so is
Silverstone. I look forward to continuing the championship fight in
Belgium.”
The championship now takes a summer break before moving on to Spa
Francorchamps in Belgium for the 6th Round from 6-9 September.

Final day shake up at 2014 Phuket Raceweek
Foxy Lady VI led from start to
finish to win the IRC Racing I title at their first attempt.
(Photo/MarineScene.asia)
It all came down to the final day of the 2014 Cape Panwa
Hotel Phuket Raceweek, held from July 16-20. After the unprecedented
abandonment of racing for all classes on the penultimate day, the pressure
was on to get a final race (or more) completed, introduce the drop in some
classes, and give everyone a fighting final day chance.
The forecast wasn’t looking great and after approximately an hour searching
for some breeze, Principal Race Officer Simon James set a startline between
Lone and Hei islands and got the fleet underway. An islands course around
Hei and Aeo for the Multihull Racing, Cruising, Charter/Bareboat and Classic
classes was the order of the day, with a short windward/leeward for the
rest.
Coming into the start on port tack, Foxy Lady VI headed off towards Aeo
Island while the rest of the fleet took the other side of the course. Early
up the leg Blue Note and Fujin tacked to follow Foxy Lady VI while Oi! and
Island Fling stuck to their guns. As they rounded the top mark, Oi! and
Island Fling had got the better of the first upwind leg while Foxy Lady VI
had slipped back and looked to have chosen the wrong side of the course.
Twin Sharks leads Voodoo
around the top mark on Day 2 of the Phuket Raceweek.
(Photo/MarineScene.asia)
Two laps of the windward/leeward and Oi! took their fifth
line honours of the series but couldn’t convert it to a handicap win, having
to settle for third in the race and third overall, while Island Fling sailed
exceptionally well to win by two minutes on corrected time from a rapidly
improving Blue Note.
Having won four from four going into the final day, and although placing
fourth in the final race, Foxy Lady VI won IRC Racing I comfortably and at
their first attempt. Led by Bill Bremner, they’re the boat in Asia to beat
right now with eight consecutive wins on the Asian circuit.
A startline incident added some spice to the proceedings in IRC Racing II on
the last day. With lots of non-racing boats on the water and hanging around
the startboat, Jessandra II, helmed by Scott Duncanson, had to round one and
came into the start at a tight angle and with no rights or options left had
to squeeze in between Surf Patrol and the start boat. A three-way collision
followed, and with no serious damage, both Surf Patrol and Jessandra II took
a penalty turn and continued their racing. No protest was lodged and
everything was left on the water.

another win in the IRC Racing II class. (Photo by Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket
Raceweek)
As it turned out, Ray Waldron’s Surf Patrol had their
best race of the series and took line honours, converting to second place on
corrected time less than one minute behind Jessandra II, of all boats, who’s
final day win made it five from five and a class win at their first time of
trying.
Throughout the week there had been talk of possible protests in the Cruising
class though nothing materialised, and to add further mystery to the
murmurings an RAF was recorded for Sail in Asia Pinocchio post-happening,
and an IRC rating error was corrected. End result? Sail in Asia Pinocchio
came into the final day in second place, not first, and needed a win in the
final race and for nearest rival Hedonist to place down the class.
Finishing seven minutes ahead was not enough for Hedonist to win the race
and they had to settle for second place by less than two minutes on
corrected time, behind race-winner Sail in Asia Pinocchio. However, a second
place was enough for Hedonist to secure the class win.
It was a long day on the course for the Charter/Bareboat entries and after a
slow start to the series by Venture, they put in a string of wins to lead
the class coming into the final day. There was still plenty to play for,
however, and the tricky conditions saw Anchalai (Ratana) come into their own
and score their first bullet of the series, and with it throw the class wide
open. A third place for Little Eva kept them in the running but when the
handicaps were calculated, Venture had placed fourth place and with that,
Little Eva won the class title by a single point.
In Multihull Racing, the title had come down to two near identical Stealth
cats from the local yard of Alan Carwardine, Asia Catamarans Hurricane and
Java. Hitting the line perfectly on the final race was the 24-foot corsair
Bullet and they thrived in the light airs, stretching out an early lead. The
smallest in the fleet was soon overtaken by others including the largest and
oldest, Adrenalin, who at 30 years old is almost a classic on the local
multihull sailing scene.
Skippered by Mark Horwood, Adrenalin sailed the conditions well and scored
their first line honours of the series, but on corrected time had to settle
for sixth in the race. Despite being fifth across the line, Bullet had saved
their best performance to last, winning the final race of the series with
Java in second and Asia Catamarans Hurricane in third. A third was enough
for Alan Carwardine and his crew on Hurricane to win the series by two
points and claim their first Raceweek win.
Only three boats made it to the startline for the final day of racing in the
Firefly class. Twin Sharks had a good lead coming into the day but Advanced
Racing Mamba were close on their heels and looking to put in a good finish.
However, after having a poor series by Voodoo’s own high standards, they
came good in the final race to win convincingly by nearly four minutes. Twin
Sharks finished second and with it defended their title and are only the
second Firefly to ‘two-peat’ at Phuket Raceweek.
Three Classics made it a day to remember, and a sight to behold, on the
final day as they lined up in-sync for the start. After over three hours,
the final classic yacht crossed the line and the handicaps were calculated,
and it was the gracefully aging schooner Seraph, skippered by Captain Bao,
that won the race and with that, the class title.

Alvarsson dominates at Bangpra
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Magnus Alvarsson and Richard
Talbot.
Andy Rich
Monday, July 14, Bangpra - Stableford
The patrons of the TRGG had to endure a dry weekend over the 12th and 13th
July as it was a big Buddha holiday in Thailand and all the bars were
prohibited from serving alcohol, so they arrived on Monday thirsting for
some golf action and not suffering from the usual Monday morning hangover.
The group headed off to the monkey course at Bangpra and it was big Magnus
Alvarsson who showed the monkeys who was boss. He rattled up 39 points,
which was far too good for the opposition and he walked off with first
prize. Ted Senior came in second after winning an arm wrestling match with
Rungratree Puangsal who came third. Actually he won on count back as Ted
would never win an arm wrestling match with anybody.
1st Magnus Alvarsson (12) 39pts
2nd Ted Senior (14) 35pts
3rd Rungratree Puangsal (8) 35pts
Wednesday, July 16, Eastern Star - Stableford
On Wednesday it was the turn of Eastern Star to provide the TRGG with the
usual stern examination and at the end of the day the top three could only
be separated after a count back, as all three finished on 36 points. Derek
Thorogood, former scouser, all round good guy and brilliant golfer (he is
also one of the bosses) discovered he had come out on top, with David Booth
taking second and Rungratree Puangsal relegated to third for the second
competition running.
1st Derek Thorogood (15) 36pts
2nd David Booth (14) 36pts
3rd Rungratree Puangsal (8) 36pts
Friday, July 18, Plutaluang - Stableford
On Friday it was once again off to the Navy Course at Plutaluang (North and
West courses) and it was good to see the Roadrunner has returned to Pattaya.
Richard Talbot runs about ten marathons a week and has various nicknames,
e.g. Bionic Man, Roadrunner and Madhatter (you have to be mad to run as far
as he does). Anyway, he made short work of the opposition and raced home to
take first place. Close behind were the other two winners this week and
Magnus Alvarsson finished second after a count back win over Derek Thorogood
in third.
1st Richard Talbot (16) 33pts
2nd Magnus Alvarsson (11) 32pts
3rd Derek Thorogood (15) 32pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to
play a round of golf with the TRGG please phone Fergus Brennan on 086 056
7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the
weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.

Barry’s borrowed putter wins him the medal
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Yves Moultier and medal winner Barry Copestake.
Sunday, July 13, Green Valley - Monthly
Medal
A Flight
1st Barry Copestake (13) net 65
2nd Claude Harder (13) net 67
3rd Paul Smith (3) net 69
B Flight
1st Yves Moultier (17) net 69
2nd Aiden Murray (18) net 70
3rd Jum Karagit (18) net 73
Near pins: No5 Bruce Anderson No 8 Paul Bray No 12 Aiden Murray No 16 Christian
Dolk
39 players squared off to contest the Lewiinski’s monthly medal for July 2014 at
the traditional venue Green Valley.
To say Barry ‘the boot’ Copestake vanquished the field is putting it lightly. He
is fortunate that he has an alias because the field might have had one ready for
him following his brilliant gross 78 net 65 performance. As our readers are
aware, Barry gets an invite to play in the Gold Medal later in the year and he
also took home a bottle of Jameson’s Irish whiskey and a lead crystal whiskey
glass. His name is also etched on the Lewiinski’s wall of shame.
A word about this week’s title, Barry was down the driving range on Saturday and
forgot to put his putter back in his bag and had to borrow one from the pro shop
today (one would think he made them a good offer for it later).
Claude Harder was two shots adrift to take the silver while Paul Smith edged
Aussie star Bob Watson off the podium on count back as both returned net 69’s.
Yves Moultier took the laurels in B Flight with a steady net 69 ahead of pay
window specialist Aiden Murray who garnered the silver with a net 70. The belle
of the bar Jum Karagit rounded out the flight with a net 73.
Back at Lewiinski’s and after the presentation Barry gave a gracious bell ring.
There were nine 2’s on the day.
Tuesday, July 15, Greenwood C & A - Stableford
A Flight
1st Kevin Rogers (12) 38pts
2nd Bill Steinman (9) 38pts
3rd Yves Moultier (17) 36pts
B Flight
1st Espen Kristoffersen (25) 37pts
2nd Peter Terry (20) 33pts
3rd John Ianson (28) 27pts
We all know that the traffic can be a challenge at the far out Greenwood but the
risk is always worth it to play a most enjoyable layout.
The fair sized mid-week turnout was split into the usual A and B flights and the
venue choice certainly suited Aussie star Kevin Rogers and Bill Steinman as they
were the co-men of the match with rock solid 38 point returns. Kevin edged Bill
in the count back for the top A Flight podium spot.
Looking up at Kevin and Bill from the lower step and gaining his second
appearance at the pay window was Monsieur Yves Moultier with a solid even par
round.
Espen Kristoffersen, which for the sake of fitting in the allotted newspaper
slot will hereinafter be known as Espen Kris, took the top step on the B Flight
podium with a steady 37 points. Espen was trailed in by Peter Terry with 33
points and John Ianson and Keith Clubb were astounded that their 27 points went
to count back for the bronze, the scales of justice tipping in John’s favour.
By now everybody in Pattaya will now that Freddy Starbeck slotted home the only
2 of the day.
Wednesday, July 16, Burapha C & D - Stableford
A Flight
1st John Pierrel (12) 36pts
2nd Yves Moultier (17) 32pts
B Flight
1st Merle Humphreys (19) 35pts
2nd William Broschart (21) 35pts
As seems to be the case, the field tends to play poorly or well as a whole on
each given day, and that was evidenced as the top score of the day was an A
Flight winning even par round posted by John Pierrel. The man who is on first
name terms with the paymaster, monsieur Yves Moultier, lifted the silver with 32
points.
B Flight could not have been tighter as a count back was required to separate
Merle Humphreys and William Broschart, both locked on 35 points. Merle snatched
the gold but William did show he was up for the challenge.
No 2’s were recorded so it’s a rollover on Friday.
Friday, July 18,
Laem Chabang C & B - Stableford
A Flight
1st Kevin Rogers (12) 38pts
2nd John Pierrel (12) 36pts
3rd Paul Bray (6) 36pts
B Flight
1st Christian Boysen (18) 37pts
2nd Yves Moultier (17) 36pts
3rd Martin Allard (22) 36pts
The last day of the week is usually held on one of the local courses when
possible to mitigate Friday’s Sukhumvit traffic, so it was off to Jack’s
masterpiece today at Laem Chabang.
Aussie star Kevin Rogers repeated his Tuesday win with the same 38 point score
to win A Flight and the man of the match honours. Second and third steps on the
podium were decided by count back where John Pierrel’s good fortune led to the
dismay of Aussie ace Paul Bray as both returned even par rounds
The junior flight was just as dramatic and the loot just as spendable, just ask
Christian Boysen who copped the top rung with a fine 37 points. The red hot Yves
Moultier made it four podium visits this week with a count back result over
Martin Allard, both with steady even par rounds, and ensured that Yves stood
shoulder high to Christian.
Kevin Rogers, Paul Bray, Paul Heyworth, Colin Davis, Christian Boysen and Merle
Humphreys shared the 2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd Soi13/13
near Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your
name to the list or call Colin on 0898260764. Transport is provided.

Future champions star on local sports day
The pre-tournament parade of athletes.
Derek Franklin
The students at the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with
Disabilities held their annual in-house sports competition recently. The
students, divided into four colour coded teams, participated in ten different
sports; athletics, ta-kraw, table-tennis, wheelchair basketball, two types of
volleyball, futsal, boccia, swimming and wheelchair tennis, and all the athletes
were hoping to win points for their respective teams.
All out effort in the race to the finish line.
Prior to arriving to study at the school, many students had
never taken part in any type of sport or physical activity. Not only does sport
keep the students fit and healthy, but it also builds confidence and self esteem
and gives them a sense of achievement, and the school has a long tradition of
producing champion sportsmen and women.
Many students travelled to Myanmar earlier this year in January to represent
Thailand at the South East Asia Para-Games, while the majority of athletes
representing Chonburi at the National Games for People with Disabilities in
February were from the school.
Wheelchair tennis - not as easy as it looks.
The Asian Para-Games will be taking place in the South Korean
city of Incheon later this year, and several students are likely to be selected
to represent the Kingdom.
But back in Pattaya, and the competition was fierce amongst the students, but as
soon as the final whistle was blown or they crossed the finish line, rivals went
back to being friends.
More information can be found at www.fr-ray.org or email
[email protected].
A proud athlete holds the winning trophy.
A 2-time winner in the swimming pool.
Ta-kraw, one of Thailand’s most popular sports.

Pattana the wet
The Pattaya Golf Society at The Elephant Bar
T1st Erik Anttonen (9) 34pts
T1st Jens Gunarsson (16) 34pts
3rd Markku Tynell (23) 33pts
Monday 14 July saw the Pattaya Golf Society travel up the 331 to Pattana to
play a stableford competition. Four groups played the B & C nines from the
forward yellow tees, and thank Buddha they did. After three holes the
heavens opened, sending the group to the drinks-stop for a wait of some 40
minutes. They ventured out again when the rain eased to a drizzle, but two
holes later it returned, in buckets! After a similar wait, the golfers again
ventured forth, only to find a Thai four-ball had inserted itself into our
field. That wouldn’t have been too bad, except they were clearly beginners.
The day had reached its nadir.
Notwithstanding the constant drizzle, and the fact the course was playing as
long as a US Open, those golfers who had the mettle to carry on, did so. It
should be noted that of the five who didn’t make it to the back nine, four
were Aussies, and the fifth, a Welshman, was dependent upon an Aussie for
his transport back. Ask yourself!
The lucky beer draw was won by the deserving David Plaiter, whilst the booby
bevy went to the one Aussie who had a genuine reason to withdraw – a bad
back. Recipient Peter Masters assures us that his ailment has nothing
whatsoever to do with the fact that this is his first visit back to Pattaya
after an absence of some months. Yeah right.
There were two twos: one on B3, by Graham Davis, and the other on C2, by
Larry Slattery. Making the podium with 33 points may appear a modest
achievement, but given the conditions encountered, it was anything but.
Congratulations go to Markku Tynell for making that score but even more so
to Erik Anttonen and Jens Gunarsson who both went one better.
Finally, a nod of appreciation to the Pattana caddies, who performed
admirably under the most trying of conditions.
Khao Kheow – a genuine test of golf
1st Larry Slattery (18) 34pts
T2nd David Thomas (10) 32pts
T2nd Murray Edwards (21) 32pts
Just a 40-minute drive from Pattaya’s CBD is Khao Kheow Country Club, a
27-hole layout that features high on the Pattaya Golf Society’s
value-for-money index. And so it again proved to a small turnout of three
groups on Wednesday 16 July.
Playing a course of this quality for a green-fee of 800 baht is VFM indeed.
The notice board stated B and C nines as the order of the day. The same
board gave Stimpmeter speeds of 9 on B and 8 on C. Teeing off the yellow
tees the well-presented fairways did offer limited run, which on a course of
some 6,500 yards was appreciated, especially after some sodden experiences
of late.
Overall, the course was in good condition, however those greens were
anything but 8 or 9 on the Stimpmeter. Most golfers struggled to bring
themselves to hit the ball hard enough for it to get anywhere near the hole,
and that included the tiddlers. The greens were OK, just incredibly slow.
Perhaps it was this green-speed factor that accounted for the rather modest
scores, as most other factors seemed to be to the golfer’s advantage.
Notwithstanding, Khao Kheow has always been a stern test of golf, and
today’s encounter proved no exception.
Congratulations to those making the podium, particularly to the consistent
and deserving Irishman, Larry Slattery, whose 34 points saw him finish two
clear of his nearest rivals, David Thomas and Murray Edwards. Murray also
recorded the only ‘2’ of the day on B3.
Today’s lucky beer draw was won, for the second consecutive day, by David
Plaiter. The Booby Bevy award meanwhile went to the affable Aussie, Rod
Black, whose four rounds since his return have yielded: 2nd, 2nd, withdraw
and last. The golfing Gods don’t look favourably upon non-injury related
withdrawals.
So, despite the lovely weather, good caddies, and a well presented course,
Khao Kheow held on to its reputation of being a hard nut to crack.
Greenwood - an absolute delight
T1st Anders Haglund, (14) 32pts
T1st Murray Edwards (21) 32pts
Despite the relatively modest turnout, the Pattaya Golf Society certainly
enjoyed its stableford competition on the C & A nines at Greenwood on 18
July. We arrived under threatening skies, but the day stayed dry, overcast
and warm; ideal in fact.
The scoring, however, did not reflect such ideal conditions. Just five
points separated first from last. The highest was 32, shared by newcomer
Anders Haglund from Sweden and Murray Edwards, and the lowest 27. Whilst the
fairways always offered a superb lie, they nonetheless played long. Bunkers
were a bit fluffy, but still quite playable. The greens were reasonable to
good, still recovering from their recent sanding. Overall, however, the
course was a delight.
With a green-fee of 650 baht and caddie-fee of 350 baht giving a total of
1000 baht, Greenwood remains at or near the top of our value-for-money
index.

Wayco & Crilly shine at Eastern Star
PSC golf from The Growling Swan
Duangjai Tusagad & Geri Crilly.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, July 14, Eastern Star – Stableford
It was time once more to head south and Eastern Star was
the chosen venue with 20 golfers on the starting sheet. It was overcast but fine
as we assembled at The Growling Swan and we welcomed Jim Groves from London,
Thomas Johansson from Sweden, Kurt Eric Persson and his lady Seesa Phompinmon
back with us again and Duangjai Tusagad after a long break from golf.
Today was a designated Thai Public Holiday so we expected the course to be busy
but in actual fact this was not the case. After haggling for a short time over
the green fee rate we managed to check in and presented ourselves at the first
tee to await out starting orders. We had five groups of four and our first
four-ball got away 10 minutes ahead of schedule under cloudy skies with not too
hot conditions and a threat of rain which fortunately resulted in just a few
drops throughout the round.
Graham
Buckingham & John Pierrel.
The golf course was in quite good condition although there were many instances
of GUR on the fairways and the greens were a bit slow. Our pace was not too bad
as there were no groups ahead of us but we did spend some time looking for balls
after errant shots and this resulted in a round which took four hours & twenty
minutes.
The course was definitely playing tough today as there was only one golfer who
played to their handicap or better and that was Kevin “Wayco” Waycott who
finished on top of Division A with a fine 37 points. Newcomer Thomas Johansson
fired a gross 75, which off his 2 handicap gave him 35 points and enabled him to
snare second place while John Pierrel was third with 33 points.
In Division B it was Geri Crilly (18 point back nine) who was declared the
winner after a count back as there were 2 players on 34 points, with Alain
“Inspector Clouseau” Taddei (17 point back nine) in second place. With 2 golfers
on 32 points another count back was required to determine third spot and that
resulted in Seesa Phompinmon (19 point back nine) getting the chocolates from
Bent Agerbo (17 point back nine).
Division A (0-15)
1st Kevin Waycott (9) 37pts
2nd Thomas Johansson (2) 35pts
3rd John Pierrel (12) 33pts
Division B (16+)
1st Geri Crilly (26) 34pts
2nd Alain Taddei (16) 34pts
3rd Seesa Phompinmon (26) 32pts
Near Pins: 3rd – Kevin Waycott, 6th – Eric Black, 13th – Bill Steinman, 17th –
John Davis
Long Putts: 9th – Jim Groves, 18th – John Davis
The Growling Swan NAGA Award (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score on
the day) was won by Duangjai Tusagad and she accepted the award like the good
sport that she is.
Thursday, July 17, Pattana – 2 Person Scramble/Stroke
It was time for our once a month novelty competition and this time it was
Ambrose Pairs (2 person Scramble) with a random draw that paired a low
handicapper with a high one, the names being drawn out of a hat.
We had an awkward number of starters with 25 but Russell Calcutt kindly
volunteered to step down as he was “not feeling the best” and those that know
Russell will know exactly what that means. The draw was done before we left the
bar and there were not too many moans & groans so we were all looking forward to
an enjoyable day on a quality golf course, Pattana.
We welcomed Niall Stuart back from working in Laos, first timer John Parkinson,
formerly from Manchester but now residing here and it was great to see Graham
Buckingham & Tom Cotton back with us once more. It was time to say farewell to
Thomas Johansson who will shortly be returning to Sweden.
After a rather long trip to the course, which lasted just under one hour we, we
checked in we were told that we would be playing the B & C nines, so without any
further delay our first four-ball got away right on our scheduled tee time of
10.00 a.m. The weather was fairly hot with a slight breeze to add some comfort
and the course was as usual in great shape with lush fairways and very well
maintained greens.
For some reason our round was quite slow, which was surprising as there were no
groups ahead of us and we completed our round in four hours & fifty minutes. It
had been very enjoyable with excellent company.
The winning pair were John Pierrel & Graham Buckingham with net 64.75, closely
followed by Thomas Johansson & John Anderson with net 65 in second place. Coming
in third were Bill Steinman & Andrew Allen with a net 66.75 and in fourth spot
were Jim Groves & Alan sanders with net 67.25. Gerd Riedler & Geri Crilly
occupied fifth place with a net 68.
Near Pins: B3 – Tom Cotton, B7 – Jim Groves, C2 – John Anderson, C7 – Bent
Agerbo
Long Putts: B9 – Niall Stuart, C9 – Peter Blackburn
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high

Andre heads the field
PSC golf from Café Kronborg
Andre Vandyk.
Monday, July 14,
Bangpra - Stableford
1st Andre Vandyk (16) 33pts
2nd Kenny Chung (23) 30pts
3rd Henry Wong (20) 28pts
The test today was Bangpra, up route 7 in just 40 minutes, a quick check-in
and away on schedule, despite the course being busy.
There was an early threat of rain but we only got caught by a few sprinkles
on the last three holes. The course was in fine condition but the old girl
wasn’t giving anything, as the scores reflect.
The winner today was Andre Vandyk with 33 points, 3 ahead of Kenny Chung in
second and a further 2 up on third placed Henry Wong.
Hill lights up Green Valley with 44-pointer
PSC golf from The Billabong Golf Bar
Bob Van Mol with his wife Phaeng, Bob Philp,
Mick Williams and Ron line up at the Baan Tong Tong Tournament.
Monday, July 14, The Emerald -
Stableford
We got away early for a three hour round at the Emerald and
employed ‘pick and place’ on the fairways as it was a bit wet in places.
The course, apart from the worm dirt on some of the greens, was in great
condition. It threatened rain but stayed away until the eighth green
where we got a little shower but stopped as we got to the ninth tee, and
from there it was just overcast and cool.
The winner with a fine 37 points was Rosco Langoulant ahead of the
steady old fella Brian Maddox in second with 36. There was one birdie
‘2’ on the 13th from Phil Waite.
Wednesday, July 16, Green Valley - Stableford
The scores today were unbelievable on greens that were
actually being sanded as we played, not cored just sanded. It was
hilarious when your ball hit a rock on the green and stopped dead or
bounced sideways. One shot Cottee hit stopped his ball from being a full
sand wedge back to the green and the rock it hit was like Buddha
Mountain.
Bill, Joe, Woolly and Rosco pose with their
caddies at Silky Oak. With eight groups
playing and the weather and course in grand shape it made for a great day
out and we managed a four hour round in perfect conditions.
We went down to sixth place on the scorecard and taking that spot was John
Player with 38 points, losing out on count back to Gus George and J.P.
Maffray who took fifth and fourth spots respectively. Coming in third was
Nichawan Khiaophuang (Sa) with a fine 39 points and second place went to Eng
Cotterell with 42 points, which would have been enough to win on any other
day but Greg Hill had other ideas and took line honours with a fantastic 44
points.
There were only two ‘2’s today, coming from J.P. Maffray and the lovely Eng
Cotterell.
Friday, July 18,
Silky Oak - Stableford
Playing the inaugural Baan Tong Tong Tournament today at Silky
Oak was a great day out for all concerned, with 12 groups and prizes for
everybody.
The course was in good condition apart from the greens, which were in need
of a cut but it didn’t matter in the end as three putts in our group were
the norm. We were all out there for a laugh and a few beers so what the
heck. A special thanks to John Player, Bill Marsden and Rosco for all the
help with making the tournament a huge success.
Pin, Orn, Eng and Sa.
The main prize of 2 night’s all inclusive accommodation at the Baan Tong
Tong Resort went to Jittina Tinpranee (Orn) with her score of 39 points,
second prize (Billabong golf bag) and on the same score went to Sel Wegner,
and in third, also with 39 points, was George Barrie who won a dinner for
two at the resort. Fourth, fifth and sixth places were taken by John Lowe,
Phil Waite, and John Baikie respectively after all three had to be separated
by another count back, this time on 37 points.
The prizes went down to eighteenth and then the lucky draw made up for the
rest so nobody missed out.
There were ten ‘2’s coming from Alan Beck, Bob Van Mol, Dave Lusha, Jeff
North, Mal Farquharson, Paul Greenaway, William Macey Wayne Cotterell and
Brian Maddox managed to bag two. Near the pin prizes went to Brian Maddox,
Wayne Cotterell, Jeff North and Bob Van Mol.
The NAGA prize went to Chris Gray with a fantastic 17 points total; at least
the 1000 baht voucher came as some consolation.
This tournament will be an annual event and if the support is anything to go
by it will be a huge success again. Back at the bar finger food was provided
for all and the drinks flowed freely and everyone had a grand time.
Note: If you are looking for a game of golf in Pattaya, give Bob a
call on 082 204 3411 or call into the bar near Lake Mabprachan and put your
name on the list.

Trev shows off
for the family
PSC golf from Siam Country Resort
Trevor Taylor and Neil Harvey.
Tuesday, July 15, Eastern Star -
Stableford
Eastern Star was the venue for our Tuesday game, with both the
weather conditions and the course looking after us. We did have a shower of
rain on Hole #13, but it was gone quickly and no delay was required. The
course was in good order, with fairways having plenty of run and greens
rolling true.
Trevor Taylor (H/cap 36), with his son and grandson visiting, exhibited his
golfing talent with a best of the day 34 points. Neil Harvey (19) got the
nod over both Jeff Wylie (6) & Paul Davies (30) on count back 18/16/14 for
second place after they all signed for 32 points. Jeff had some consolation
with a near pin..
Thursday, July 17, Pleasant Valley - Stableford
Thursday saw us travel up the Hwy 7, to the course a lot like to
blame for their own poor play, Pleasant Valley from the Blues at about 6300
yards. The course was in good nick, and it would have been hard to find
fault with any aspect of its conditioning.
Neil Harvey (19) played all aspects of the game well to sign for a fine 40
points, but was pushed all the way by Martin Hayes (15) who made a nice
birdie on 18 for a 4 for 4, to complete his 38 points. Near pins were spread
around between Willem, Jeff & Martin.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam
Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after
50 metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along. Golf from
here is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the Resort hosting
prompt presentations on both days.
As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors
(>60s) who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 0890941841 for
scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Voller top scores
at Silky Oak
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Wednesday, July 16, Silky Oak - Stableford
There were six groups out on Monday at Pattavia but the
competition was called off after nine holes due to the torrential
rain, a couple of groups continued and finished the round but the
rest were given nine hole rain checks.
Glyn
Evans – winner
at Eastern Star.
Wednesday we had another six groups out, with the cut set at 10-17
and 18+ in the two divisions. This was our second time here in six
weeks and everyone enjoyed the course yet again.
Chris Voller returned the best score of the day, winning division 1
with 39 points, while Tony Bless, now playing off 15, occupied
second place with 37. Harry Vincenzi filled the final spot on the
podium with 36 points.
Colin Aspinall was the winner in division 2 with 34 points, five
ahead of second placed Rod Howett, and the two Welsh boys fought it
out for third place, Jimmy Johnson edging Curtis Hessler 14/12 on
the back-nine count back after both came in with 28 points each.
Near pins went to Alan Bissell, Paul Butler, Hitoshi Takezaki, Chris
Voller, Colin Aspinall and Pepo Frick.
Colin Aspinall recorded the only birdie ‘2’ of the day on the 14th
hole to scoop the division 2 pool.
Friday, July 18, Eastern Star – Stableford
Six groups out yet again today at Eastern Star, on
slightly cloudy day with a cool breeze coming off the coast. There
was a 9-15 cut in division 1 and 16+ in division 2 and the organizer
Glyn Evans came in with the best score of the day, winning division
2 with 37 points after beating a sad Joe Kubon 20/19 on the back
nine. Ken Miller took third with 36 points.
Grenville Hill was the winner in division 1 with 35 points and Karl
Flood placed second after beating Chris Voller 14/10 on the back six
holes, both scoring 34 points in total.
Tony Bless birdied the 17th to win the division 1 rollover ‘2’s pot.
Near pins were claimed by Tony Bless, Paul Butler (2), Wilf Latham,
Glyn Evans and Rodney Howett.

Cooney calls the shots
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Buff (left) with “Mr. Consistency”, a.k.a.
Gerry Cooney.
Monday, July 14, Crystal Bay – Stableford
Today we made a return to the Crystal Bay course, which used
to be a regular favourite but we haven’t played here since February, due
mainly to the poor condition of the greens at that time.
We were allocated to play the C and A nines and teed off on schedule in
cool, overcast conditions with no golfers in sight ahead of us. It was
soon obvious that quite a lot of work is being done on the bunkers which
have been neglected for a very long time, and the fairways were fine,
but unfortunately the greens were little improved and still resemble a
patchwork quilt of different grasses.
Gerry Cooney wasn’t bothered by the variable speed of the putts and
romped home three points clear of Thomas Nyborg in second place.
After the game it was a pleasure to take a shower in the newly
refurbished shower room, and it has to be said that things are starting
to look up here after several years of neglect.
1st Gerry Cooney (14) 40pts
2nd Thomas Nyborg (20) 37pts
3rd Nguyen Le Dung (18) 36pts
4th Alan Sullivan (11) 34pts
Near Pins: Alan Sullivan, Niall Glover, Steve Durey and Nguyen Le Dung.
Wednesday, July 16, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
A late change to our schedule took us back to Pattaya C.C.,
which we last played in January when the course wasn’t in good shape,
having been opened too soon following extensive renovation work.
However, the change of venue proved popular and nineteen golfers turned
up at The Ranch, meaning we were able to have two flights for the first
time since mid-April.
The course wasn’t busy and our groups teed off on schedule from the blue
tees, in bright sunny conditions with a gentle breeze keeping the
temperature at an acceptable level.
The front nine was in reasonable condition although it’s fair to say the
fairways need a few more weeks (and some rain) in order to grow in
fully, and the greens were slow and tricky to read. The back nine
however hasn’t matured quite so well, and the fairways were bare in
places with several large areas still heavily sanded, which we decided
to play as GUR.
Steve Durey and Andy Brady were the only two players in the competition
who had played this course over the last few months, and their
experience proved invaluable with them recording the best two scores of
the day, taking first and second places respectively in the B Flight.
“Mr Reliable”, Gerry Cooney continued his winning run to take first
place in the A Flight ahead of Paul Smith, with John Graham coming home
in third place.
The general consensus in post-match discussions was that the visit had
been well worthwhile, especially with the 500 baht green fee rate, and
your scribe for one would have no qualms about restoring the course to
our regular schedule as it is sure to continue improving over the coming
months.
A Flight
1st Gerry Cooney (13) 35pts
2nd Paul Smith (3) 33pts
3rd John Graham (10) 33pts
B Flight
1st Steve Durey (22) 37pts
2nd Andy Brady (17) 36pts
3rd Thomas Nyborg (20) 35pts
Near Pins: Gerry Cooney, Steve Durey and Paul Smith (2).
Friday, July 18, Pattavia – Stableford
A smaller group of golfers today for our competition at the
Pattavia course, which is now part of our regular schedule and offers
good value for money. The sky was overcast and the temperature
pleasantly cool as we teed off slightly ahead of our scheduled time,
with an apparently empty course ahead of us.
We were informed by the caddies that the greens had been allowed to grow
a little in order to slow them down, but it was soon obvious that they
were only slower on uphill putts, and anything downhill was still
treacherous. The course was in good shape and work is still going on to
repair some of the bare areas off the fairways, so the course is well
worth visiting despite the tortuous drive down the entrance road.
Colin Greig rediscovered some of his previous good form and produced the
best performance on the day, coming home one point clear of Tony Robbins
and Paul Smith who had to be separated on a count back.
The new clubhouse is stylish and comfortable but your scribe made his
first visit to the air-conditioned restaurant and I’ve never seen so
many flies in a single enclosed area, certainly not conducive to
enjoying a meal, and surely it can’t be too difficult for the management
to solve that problem.
1st Colin Greig (7) 35pts
2nd Tony Robbins (13) 34pts
3rd Paul Smith (3) 34pts
Near Pins: Paul Smith, Dave Anon, and Colin Greig (2).
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now
play out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire
station, and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly
but competitive golf competition, why not come and join us. We meet at
The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new players
are always welcome.

Buchanan departs with victory at Burapha
PSC golf from the Outback Golf Bar
(From left): Eddy Beilby
with Bruce McAdam and Stefan Hoge.
Monday, July 14, Burapha -
Stableford
Seven groups played the A and B nines from the blue tees on a day that
started off hot and muggy until the rain came and cooled things down on
the back nine. In addition, overnight rain had made the course wet so we
played ‘lift clean and place’.
Dave Buchanan signed off his last round with a level par 36pts to win
Div A as we welcomed back Bobby Driggs from Japan, Colin Goon from Aus
and John Low, Geoff Christie and Mark Humphrey all from New Zealand. Bob
Finley was second with 35pts, from Peter Nixon and Bobby Driggs who
headed a five-way count back on 32pts that left Dennis Pelly, Colin Goon
and Steve Mann all just knocking on the door.
Div B was also won with 36pts by Jimmy Little, from John O’Keefe (34)
with Ken Young third, beating Stephen Blazsanyik on c/b after both
finished with 33pts each.
Pete Stonebridge (A3) and Bob Finley (B3) had the only ‘2’s.
Div A (0-16)
1st Dave Buchanan (0) 36pts
2nd Bob Finley (13) 35pts
3rd Peter Nixon (11) 32pts
4th Bobby Driggs (14) 32pts
Div B (17+)
1st Jimmy Little (18) 36pts
2nd John O’Keefe (19) 34pts
3rd Ken Young (26) 33pts
4th Stephen Blazsanyik (19) 33pts
Wednesday, July 16, Thai Country Club - Stableford
Four groups made their way up the motorway to play the
magnificent Thai Country Club but unfortunately the recent rain in the
area had made the already poor roads near the course, atrocious. A shock
absorber and spring shop would make a fortune!
We had a disappointing number of players plus some spoiled cards for our
third visit of four here. We reverted to the white tees with ‘lift,
clean and place’ in action and together with the greens running
beautifully, the scores were red hot.
A special welcome to the IPGC lads, Martin, Mike and John, not
forgetting Kerry Rothman who has returned for another short break, even
if you did have to go back for your shoes.
Eddy Beilby won the day with a great 40pts, beating Geoff Christie on
c/b, and another c/b was also needed to separate third and fourth with
Mike Missler getting the nod over John Pegrum, both on 38pts. Fifth
place was occupied by Mark Humphrey on 36pts.
There were no ‘2’s.
1st Eddy Beilby (16) 40pts
2nd Geoff Christie (05) 40pts
3rd Mike Missler (09) 38pts
4th John Pegrum (13) 38pts
5th Mark Humphrey (22) 36pts
Friday, July 18, Green Valley - Stableford
Today was overcast, but no rain and a wee bit of sunshine. 20
players turned up to tackle the regular Green Valley course and a
welcome to Lars from Norway and his wife, Mildred, from the Philippines
who are in Thailand for a week’s holiday. Coincidentally, Lars bumped
into one of the Outback’s colleagues in the golf shop on third road on
Thursday and just happened to say he was looking for a game. Well there
you go – and we hoped you enjoyed the Outback experience.
Surprisingly, even after the heavy rain on Thursday, we were still
allowed to drive on the fairways so it shows how good their drainage
system is. Some of the greens were still a little bit bumpy after the
recent coring and dressing but his didn’t slow down some of our fellow
players and Lars was one of them, as he sank his putts from everywhere
on the front nine to score 21 points. Unfortunately for him, it didn’t
continue.
Jimmy Little followed his win in Div B on Monday at Burapha with another
win here, but this time in Div A with 38pts. Second was Rick Evans (36)
and Dennis Pelly third on 35; whilst Div B went to Bruce McAdam who
recorded the day’s top score of 42, beating Stefan Hoge by one, with Bob
Mattes a couple more back on 39. Regretfully, my 37 wasn’t quite good
enough.
There were five ‘2’s from Rick Evans & Suzi (8th) and Kerry Beck, Stefan
Hoge and a second from Rick Evans (12th).
Div A (0-17)
1st Jimmy Little (18) 38pts
2nd Rick Evans (04) 36pts
3rd Dennis Pelly (13) 35pts
Div B (18+)
1st Bruce McAdam (26) 42pts
2nd Stefan Hoge (19) 41pts
3rd Bob Mattes (22) 39pts

Claus clicks into gear
PSC golf from The Golf Club
Some of the gang at Laem
Chabang.
Steve Ellison
Monday, July 14, Green Valley (white tees) –
Stableford
1st Claus Birk-Thompson (14) 41pts
2nd Mark Wood (8) 39pts
3rd John Hutt (28) 38pts
First off, let’s welcome back our long lost TGC partner Adam Schoenfeld
to the fold. Adam had a hiatus from golf and is now back with a
vengeance. He played on Friday and after a shakey front nine he
rebounded back with a respectable 13 points on the back. As a golfer,
he’s a great poker player.
Beanz Meanz Heinz and Mondayz meanz Green Valley for us, so Route 36
took us 30 minutes up the road to our weekly venue. We had a good low
season turnout of 20 golfers and enjoyed some lovely weather, with a
gentle breeze to keep us cool.
Nick Handscombe.
Today we saw our winner break the magic 40 number by one shot. Claus
Birk-Thompson pulled off a great round of golf to better his handicap by
5 and win all the handsome man vouchers. Just behind and with a very
respectable 39 points was TGC regular Mark Wood. Markie just got off the
plane from a 28-day rig cycle in Oz so well played to him for a great
first round on his land legs. Gentleman golfer John Hutt found his way
with a solid 38 points to put him on the podium at last!
Wednesday, July 16, Khao Kheow B & C (yellow tees) –
Stableford
T1st Nick Handscombe (12) 37pts
T1st Andy Makara (23) 37pts
3rd Phil Smedley (9) 34pts
When asked about Khao Kheow, you can only describe this track as one of
the best courses in Pattaya. This is a Pete Dye design and if you stay
out of the rough you can score well here. It was another beautiful day
here in Chonburi as a light overcast helped keep the temperature down
nicely.
Working our way up the ladder, we see TGC Golf Captain Phil Smedley once
again on the rostrum and this time his 34 points was enough for third
place. Andy Makara has shown himself to be a very consistent golfer of
late and Andy tied with Nicky Handscombe for first place honours. Nicky
himself also just got back to town for a few weeks getaway and I am sure
he is glad to be back if he keeps playing like this!
Friday, July 18, Laem Chabang B & C (white tees) –
Stableford
1st Brad Sproxton (12) 39pts
2nd Thierry Danzas (23) 39pts
3rd Lasse Pettersen (24) 38pts
What a lovely golf course Jack Nicklaus has designed for us! It was with
great pleasure that today we introduced several first-timers to this
course, and all had rave reviews about it. Laem Chabang is currently
running a summer special with a promo rate of 1,000 baht weekday green
fee as they are completely remodeling the clubhouse facilities. We had a
temporary locker room and the showers are down the hall in one of their
hotel rooms, so very little inconvenience for us there.
Thierry Danzas & Brad
Sproxton with Lasse Pettersen.
Big Lasse Pettersen plays off 24 but still managed to turn in an equally
big 38 on the top of his scorecard for third spot. Chef to the stars
Thierry Danzas and our old pal from Red Deer, Alberta, Brad Sproxton,
tied it all with 39 Stableford points to share the win on today’s card.
Thanks to all who joined us this week for some great golf in Amazing
Thailand.

Watson and Cotton
find the treasure
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Tuesday’s top three.
Tuesday, July 15, Green Valley –
Stableford
This course always has a good turnout and this week was no
exception. Of late we have been experiencing a very quiet period, but it was
nice to see numbers back to normal.
It was looking decidedly rainy as we teed off on the first but it (the rain)
held off until we made the turn for home and then the clouds opened. We took
shelter for 45 minutes but were soon on our way again and completed the
round. Through all this the course played quite well, even if the greens
were a bit slow due to the rain. We got changed, thankful for the hot
showers and had a quick bite to eat before starting on the journey back.
Max Scott, Bob Watson, Don
Carmody and Tom Cotton with one of Bert’s finest.
Back at Bert’s it was soon time for the results, with a
decidedly high scoring group of winners. Taking first place was Brian Parish
with 41 points, a good round on a wet day. In second was Max Scott with 40
points and in third was the other Aussie single handicapper, Bob Watson,
with 39. We then had a count back on 36 points that saw Ted Morris in fourth
and Dave Nicholson just losing out.

Friday, July 18, Treasure Hill - Stableford
Tropical Bert’s gang headed out to Treasure Hill on Friday. We
hadn’t played here in a while (so many courses - so little time) and all
were pleasantly surprised on many fronts. The weather was just perfect with
cloud cover but no hint of rain, cooler temps, and a steady breeze, and all
agreed the golf course was in excellent condition. Treasure Hill is a tough
but interesting layout and you better hit straight because the bunkers are
well placed (or poorly depending on your view) to catch any wayward shot.
This is a very scenic course as well, so overall a good day.
There were enough players to have two groups, and when the results were
tallied it was clear that Treasure Hill is more than just a pretty face, you
better know how to hit the ball. In the A Flight Bob Watson (H/cap 7) again
made his return well known by taking first place with 36 points on count
back over his partner in crime Max Scott (6). Third place went to Brian
Parrish (13) with a respectable 35 points. These three names in various
order are often seen in the winners’ circle lately.
The B Flight scores were somewhat lower, attesting to Treasure’s Hill’s
trickery. First place in this flight went to Tom Cotton (23) who earned 34
points. Then Dick Warberg (19) edged out the recently returned Don Carmody
(23), both with 30 points.
