Pattaya again will invite people to exercise and meditate during the annual Visakha Bucha Day walk-run.
Deputy Mayor Wattana Chantanawaranon presided over the April 30 planning meeting for the event, co-sponsored by the Pattaya Run and Cycling for Health Club. The May 13 event features an eight-kilometer walk-run, sitting meditation, and sermons on Buddhist principals.
The Pattaya Education Department will manage event sites and coordinate traffic. Its Religion Promotion Office will invite 39 monks to perform religious ceremonies at the Pattaya office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand at 3:30 p.m.
The walk-run, which begins at 4 p.m., will offer 10 prizes for males under 40, 10 prizes for men over 40 and 10 prizes for women of all ages. The program calls for participants to run for five kilometers and walk another three. The route runs from the TAT office, up to Big Buddha Hill, down to the Naval Radio Station and back to TAT. Water will be available along the route.
Traffic will be closed at two points from 4:00-4:30 p.m.: the police booth in front of Big Buddha Hill and at the intersection under the Bali High Pier flyover.
Prizes will be awarded at 5 p.m. and, at 5:20 p.m., monks will perform their religious ceremonies. At 6.30 p.m., participants will head up Big Buddha Hill to perform a candle-waving rite.
Entry to the race is 100 baht and includes a t-shirt. For more information, call the Pattaya Call Center at 1337.
