Pattaya all set for
weekend sporting fiesta
The Top of the Gulf Regatta takes place at Ocean
Marina Yacht Club in Na Jomtien from May 2-5.
A great four days of sport in the form of sailing and
rugby are lined-up in Pattaya this weekend with 2 major sporting events
scheduled to take place.
Starting on Friday, May 2 and continuing through to Monday, May 5, the 10th
anniversary Top of the Gulf (TOG) Regatta will be held off Ocean Marina
Yacht Club in Na Jomtien featuring top sailors from around the world who
will be in Pattaya to compete in Asia’s largest multi-class sailing event.
Somewhere in excess of 250 boats and more than 600 sailors from over 30
countries will be battling it out in keelboats, multihulls, dinghies, beach
catamarans and windsurfs. The event also features the prestigious Coronation
Cup and the Thailand Optimist National Championships.
The Chris Kays Memorial 10’s rugby tournament
will be held at Horseshoe Point Resort from May 3-4.
The Top of the Gulf is the only regatta in Thailand to be
operated from a marina and Ocean Marina Yacht Club, South East Asia’s
largest marina and home of the regatta since the beginning, provides an
ideal in-water and onshore base for the event with great viewing spots for
spectators. For more details on this year’s 10th anniversary regatta, turn
to page 55.
Running simultaneously to the regatta on Saturday and Sunday, May 3-4, will
be the fourteenth staging of the Pattaya 10’s Rugby Tournament, which is now
known as the Chris Kays Memorial Tournament to perpetuate the memory of the
former Pattaya Panthers captain, who was tragically killed in the Bali
bombing in October 2002.
The rugby festival will, as in past years, be held at the grounds of the
beautiful Horseshoe Point Resort in east Pattaya and will feature an open
men’s 10’s tournament with 16 local and international teams taking part, and
a junior division (under-16’s), which is now in its fifth year.
The action will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and concludes around 6 p.m.
Sunday in what should be a memorable weekend of both on and off field
entertaining. Note that the Kingdom Property U-16’s tournament will be
played from 16:00 to 19:00 on Saturday evening and will conclude between
08:00 and 10:00 on Sunday morning. For more details, check website:

Local cricketers complete league season unbeaten
Hamza receives his man of the match award
from club captain Simon Philbrook.
Pattaya
Cricket Club, affiliated with Pattaya Sports Club, finished the league
season in convincing fashion with a 6 wicket victory over the Thai National
Ladies team last weekend and maintained their unbeaten league record.
On a very hot and humid Sunday morning at the national cricket ground in
Bangkok, PCC won the toss and elected to bowl first on a grass wicket that
appeared severely underprepared. And so it transpired as the PCC bowlers
conceded only 15 runs from the first 8 overs. Wickets fell regularly as the
inconsistent bounce and lateral movement proved too much for the batsmen.
A couple of wickets a piece for Akhil (2/8) and Hamza (2/3) ripped the heart
out of the batting line up but Andy Emery (3/1), sporting his brand new
bowling boots, was the pick of the bowlers. The ladies were finally all out
for 52 in the sixteenth over, their score generously boosted by an overdose
of wides (22), courtesy of the part time bowlers (Venky).
With only a modest total to chase and despite the vagaries of the pitch,
captain Simon Philbrook elected to reverse the batting order. It soon became
apparent why Usman, Akhil and Bobby Young are normally nine, ten and jack
when the score labored to 5 for 3. It was left to Hamza (21no) and Venky
(27) to steady the ship and bring a semblance of order to the proceedings as
PCC cantered to a 6 wicket victory with 11 overs remaining.
PCC’s final match of the season is the Grand Final versus Indorama on 11th
May, the venue is yet to be decided. Details will appear on the club website
www. pattayacricketclub.com and on the Facebook page.

United back on winning track

Pattaya United secured a valuable 2-1 home victory over
struggling Khon Kaen FC at the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya last Sunday to
move up to 11th position in the Thai Division 1 standings after nine games.
Having won four of their last five matches, United currently have 12 points,
8 behind league leaders Ang Thong FC.
United are due to take a long trip this coming Sunday to face Chaingmai FC
but before that they were scheduled for an away match on April 30 against
near neighbours Sriracha, who racked up their first point of the season last
weekend with a 0-0 draw in Lopburi against TTM.
Elsewhere in Division 1, Sattahip based Thai Navy’s push for a promotion
spot suffered a hiccup as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Nakhon
Ratchasima.
In the Premier League, Chonburi FC found themselves on the wrong end of a
2-0 scoreline at Buriram United and have now slipped to fifth place in the
league standings, six points behind leaders Muang Thong United.

Indoor lawn bowls at the Coco Club
The winter bowling leagues ended last month after 14
weeks and 42 games and Thanom and Ian won the Wednesday edition by 5 points
from the chasing teams of Lek and Sue on 60 points, who just held off Bank
and Margaret on 59 for second spot.
Friday’s champions were more convincing with a win for Lek, Thanom and Yuppa
on 59 points from the previous season’s winners Nok, On and Thong, who were
7 points behind but again they just held off Ken, Harvey and Ian by one
point for second place.
The new leagues started on April 23 with an additional Sunday pairs
tournament, which still has a couple of spare places.
The new league also saw the first of a new competition - mixed triples –
featuring 2 men and 1 lady in a team which produced some great bowling on
the first weekend and included the best 23 Thai bowlers and 7 farangs who
dared to take them on.
In division A our local hero Bank beat Vinai 15-6 and looked to be on a roll
but then he lost to Yung 13-3 and Tan 10-6. Yung was on a high after winning
2 from 2 but then he lost to Vinai 7-4 and the league was wide open but it
was Vinai, Num and Pukky who took it on shot difference to go into the final
from Tan, Sukom and Sue, who went on to the contest the Plate.
Divison B was a little different with Ing coming out on fire with a 17-1
victory over Somchai, but then lost to Bus 14-4. Ian was slowly accumulating
shots, winning 2 and losing 2, and then just when the league appeared
decided, the team of Jenny, Ken and Mick came up with a dramatic 9-6 victory
over Ing which left 3 teams on 4 points and let Ian, Harvey and Thanom slip
in on bowl difference behind Bus, Go and Nok, who won all their 4 games.
So the 3rd and 4th place play off was nip and tuck with Team Ian taking it
8-7 from Team Tan. The final was even closer and after 10 ends the score was
10-10 and an extra end was needed with even more drama. Team Vinai took the
jack to within a foot of the ditch which left everyone scrambling on rink 1
with no-one able to ditch it and only 3 bowls from 18 remained on the rink
at the end. So it was Team Vinai 11-10 for the first Mixed Triples title and
7,500 baht. Team Bus came in second for 6000 baht, Team Ian third (4500
baht), and Team Tan fourth (3000 baht).
A new bi-monthly pairs competition called the Kanchanakaphan Cup starts in
June and plays through August, October and December with prizes each week
and an accumulated points league. Anyone interested in taking part, contact
Sue on 087 135 8357.

Ocean Marina to host 10th
anniversary Top of the Gulf Regatta
Captain Bundit Kongyai, Chief
of Yacht Racing Association of Thailand (standing back row 4th left),
Supatra Angkavinijwong, Deputy Managing Director of Ocean Property Co., Ltd.
(back row centre), and William Gasson, Chairman of Top of the Gulf Regatta
2014 (back row 3rd right) are ready to welcome sailors to the 10th
anniversary Top of the Gulf Regatta.
Ocean Marina Yacht Club, South East Asia’s largest
marina, is all set to host the 10th anniversary Top of the Gulf Regatta from
1st to 5th May 2014. Located in Na Jomtien, Ocean Marina Yacht Club is the
hub of sailing in the region and home of the award-winning Top of the Gulf
Regatta since its inception in 2005.
The marina has long promoted sailing in the Gulf of Thailand and surrounds,
hosting regular club regattas, youth sailing programmes, national and
regional championships.
“Ocean Marina Yacht Club is the perfect venue for a multi-class regatta such
as Top of the Gulf,” said William Gasson, Chairman of the regatta organising
committee.
“The marina has played an important role in the development of sailing in
the region and has been instrumental in making the Top of the Gulf Regatta
the largest sailing event of its kind in Asia today,” he added.
In recognition of the Regatta’s success and cementing its position on the
international sailing calendar, Top of the Gulf Regatta was recently voted
‘Asian Regatta of the Year’ at the 2014 Asian Marine & Boating Awards.
“We’re honoured to have won this award. There’s no doubt that having such a
great venue and unwavering support from Ocean Marina has played a huge part
in the Regatta’s success,” added Mr. Gasson.
Staking its claim as the largest marina in South East Asia, Ocean Marina has
undergone an ambitious recent expansion, plan increasing the number of
berths from 200 in mid-2011 to 330 today, with ongoing development to
increase the dry storage area as well as adding another 48 berths by July
2014.
According to Supatra Angkavinijwong, Deputy Managing Director of Ocean
Property Co., Ltd., Ocean Marina Yacht Club has grown over the years in
tandem with the industry’s growth.
“We have seen a trend in recent years of more Thais buying yachts. This,
together with the growth in the number of visiting yachts from overseas, has
seen the Gulf of Thailand become a key yachting hub in South East Asia, and
our current expansion is in response to this demand and in anticipation of
further growth,” said Supatra.
As sailing in the region grows and the 2014 Top of the Gulf Regatta opens
its doors, Ocean Marina Yacht Club will be full to the seams this weekend,
having welcomed an influx of international boats coming to race in the
Regatta from Japan, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and elsewhere in
Thailand.
The Top of the Gulf Regatta expects to welcome a near record fleet of 250
boats and over 600 sailors. The twelve classes include this year the RS:One
Asian Windsurfing Championships, being held in Thailand for the first time,
and over 30 national team sailors from Asian countries will be competing for
the Asian crown.

Mountain bikers hit the trail in Pattaya
Mountain bikers prepare at the start line of the
2014 Pattaya Mountain Bike Challenge. Over
100,000 baht in prize money was up for grabs at the 2014 Pattaya Mountain
Bike Challenge, held on Pratumnak Hill on Sunday, April 27.
Cycling enthusiasts from all over the region turned up en-masse to take part
and organizers were delighted to announce that this year’s event had
received nearly double the amount of entries compared to previous editions.
For those not taking part there were many great vantage points from which to
view the racing and the start/finish area also featured booths selling
cycling equipment and paraphernalia along with the usual food and
refreshment stalls.
The competition itself was divided into 18 sub-categories dependent on age
and gender and the riders were faced with taking on a tough 5km loop around
the wooded trails and steep road climbs of Pratumnak.
The 19-33 years open division featuring 15 cyclists was one of the more
keenly contested fields and was won by Aphichet Angsusingh ahead of
Cherdchai Jaiwong in second and Ratchapol Kaewmanee in third. Aphichet
received 7,000 baht and a trophy for his efforts.
The final race of the day saw 24 cyclists in the 30-34 years of age category
battle it out for honours, with first place and 7,000 baht going to Narkorn
Raksakhaen while second and third spots were filled respectively by
Theerawut Huayhongthong and Sonthaya Homchuen.
Winning cyclists received trophies and prize
money totaling over 100,000 baht.

Stuvik confirms another season in Formula 3
Sandy Stuvik tests out his new
Dallara Formula 3 car in preparation for the new season.
Thai driving protégé Sandy Stuvik has decided, after
discussion with his sponsors, to stay one more season at the Formula 3 level
to gain additional experience before moving up to the highly competitive GP2
category. Stuvik will again race with the Italian RP Motorsport squad in the
recently renamed Euroformula Open series, utilizing the Dallara Formula 3
chassis with Toyota supplied engines. The series specifications have been
upgraded since last year with faster engines and better performing tires.
The Thai racer was very competitive in the European Formula 3 Open series
during last season and considering the huge learning curve that the formula
3 platform offers on the F1 circuits in Europe, Stuvik and his team
considered this to be the best direction to prepare him for a successful
transition to top level racing on his way to Formula 1.
Stuvik
was the winner of the Winter Cup Euro Formula Open race at the Paul Ricard
Circuit in France on March 1, 2014.
Stuvik said of his decision: “I am excited to race another season in F3, as
this is a very competitive car which I now am starting to know well. This
year the organizers have increased the engine power and we have faster
tires, so overall in testing we have been 2-3 seconds faster than last
season. During the official season warm up for the winter race at Paul
Ricard at the beginning of March, I managed to set pole position, fastest
lap and win the race, which is the best way to kick off the season. During
March and April I have been testing at Catalunya, Spa, Nurbürgring,
Hungaroring and Monza.”
Besides the testing sessions around Europe, Stuvik devoted all available
time to attending the Shape Driver development center in Italy, where mental
and physical coaching at the highest athletic level is offered to F1 and F3
level drivers.
“I feel really well prepared for the first round of the season and I
appreciate all cheers from my Thai fan club,” Stuvik added.
The Euroformula Open series starts this weekend May 3-4 at the Nurbürgring
circuit in Germany.

Mark & Markku take the medals
IPGC golf from The Haven Weekly Report
Mark Lang, Markku Tynell and
Russell Exley.
Monday, April 21, Bangpra - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Russell Exley (9) 35pts
2nd Yukio Kikuchi (20) 35pts
3rd Mike Dabanovich (12) 34pts
4th Phillip Cass (21) 33pts
5th Bruce Kusyk (13) 33pts
A week of three fine but certainly not easy courses started out at Bangpra where
the low season has brought some sense to the starting times once again. As usual
the course was in tip top shape although the greens were noticeably a lot
slower, enabling most of the entries to complete a reasonable round as opposed
to the tee to green and oops, which is more the norm.
Russell Exley made one of his rare appearances and showed that one may not
necessarily need to play or practice regularly to be confident standing over the
ball. His one over handicap, aided by a very nice back nine of two under
handicap, earned him a win with a better 20 to 18 over the inward half to deny
Yukio Kikuchi a rare win.
Mike Dabanovich also demonstrated that lack of play may not determine ones form
as he took third place just one behind the leading pair.
Phillip Cass won another count back over Bruce Kusyk by a clear margin of 17 to
13 to take fourth as Bruce slipped coming home following an excellent opening
nine holes.
There were no 2’s in either division.
Prior to the presentations being made there was a welcome for Barry Williams
together with welcome backs for Kazuo Takimoto, Johnny Clements and Paul
Magowan.
Wednesday, April 23, Khao Kheow A & B - Stableford
CSS 73
1st Mark Lang (8) 34pts
2nd Stephen Bugden (5) 29pts
3rd Russell Gilroy (14) 27pts
4th Norman Cheetham (13) 27pts
5th John Carlin (16) 27pts
Another good course in great condition saw another good attendance including a
fair level of low handicappers taking part. Mark Lang returned from the cold
climes of Europe, also having not hit a ball since leaving Thailand in early
January, to win by five shots ahead of his nearest challenger. Mark’s round
could have been even better as he completed the front nine with 20 points but
then uncharacteristically dropped three shots in the first four holes of the
back nine but held on to finish on level two pointers for the win.
Stephen Bugden ran him the closest but still a long way behind after he had
started with a couple of zeros on the opening half and could not raise his game
sufficiently on this tough course through the back nine, but he did sufficient
to take second spot.
There followed a logjam of three who had to be separated by a count back, which
Russell Gilroy won to take third with 10 over the last six holes as Norman
Cheetham could manage just 8 after they had tied the nine on 14 a piece. That
left John Carling in fifth as he could amass just 11 on the last nine after a
good start to his round but seven single pointers on the back nine saw his
challenge fade dramatically.
Once again there were no 2’s in either division.
Before the presentations there were welcome backs for Mark Lang, Stephen Bugden,
Norman Cheetham and John Wood.
Friday, April 25, Greenwood - Monthly Medals
CSS 73
Division 1
1st Mark Lang (8) net 74
2nd Trevor Schirmer (14) net 76
3rd Russell Gilroy (14) net 76
Division 2
1st Markku Tynell (23) net 74
2nd Shuichi Kodaka (19) net 75
3rd Terry Hodgkiss (22) net 76
In keeping with the two courses played earlier in the week, Greenwood, where the
B & C nines were found to be in excellent condition, proved to be a tough test
of golf for all levels of ability with both Medals being won with scores off two
over handicap, which saw the CSS for the day go out to 73.
The first division was led in by Mark Lang who once again showed his quality,
taking his first monthly Medal out of The Haven with a solid round that was good
enough by two to see him home. Mark starting out inauspiciously, using his
handicap up on the outward half, but he then swept back on two over gross to
finish as a worthy winner. He became the fifth player in the first division to
qualify for the Gold and Silver Medals to be held in December.
Second place went to Trevor Schirmer after he won a count back over Russell
Gilroy. Russell had the edge on the front nine by a single stroke but Trevor
then repeated that on the back nine to take the position with a better 39 to 40
net.
The second division was also a very close contest with Markku Tynell also
becoming the fifth different winner in the year to add his name to the list for
the second division Gold and Silver Medals quest. Markku’s round was just
sufficient to see off the close challenge of Shuichi Kodaka, who always manages
to turn in a competitive round in the medals, by a single stroke over the last
four holes, to leave Shuichi in second spot.
Terry Hodgkiss slipped into third place just one more back after a solid
performance which sadly dropped off right at the end as he finished an otherwise
good day with two doubles.
There were no 2’s in the second division but at last the multi-rollover first
division pool was taken, being shared between Mike Dabanovich and Stephen
Bugden.
Before making the presentations the Doc, who is almost back to full health,
welcomed back Terry Hodgkiss and Paul Young.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile 094
567 5726 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach Road and
2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to
sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on Monday, Wednesday,
and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played
can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Hansen brightens up
poor Green Valley
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at the Elephant Bar
With Songkran over for another year the Pattaya Golf Society
resumed normal duties with visit to Green Valley on Monday, 21st April to play a
stabeford competition.
A long time empty first tee gave a clue to the course condition which was
reasonable except for greens which, in the opinion of an experienced Green
Valley golfer, were in the worst condition he could remember. Unevenly cut, some
spiked, unevenly sanded, variable in pace. you name it, Green Valley had it!
The single flight began the round on the stroke one hole - how quaint - and then
followed the original layout for the next seventeen holes and scores were not
impressive. Brian Talbot and Dave Edwards shared third place with 33 points and
Erik Anttonen took second with a very solid 35 points. The winner was Jesper
Hansen and his level par round was one of the rare highlights of the day.
Gerner Lykke and Dave Edwards shared the ‘2’s pot with their efforts on the
fifth and sixteenth respectively and the Booby Bevy later went to Kerry Jonsson
who was en route from Reykjavik to Birmingham but decided to call in on his golf
mates for a few rounds!
Chris Smith impresses at Bangpra
Bangpra was the venue for the Pattaya Golf Society on Wednesday, 23rd
April, when a large field turned out to play a stableford event on the popular
course. The course was in excellent condition and the greens were only a modicum
slower than normal but many white tees were back at their fullest extent so a
fine contest was in store for both flights which were divided at thirteen and
under.
In the first flight Alan Flynn and Brian Talbot shared second place with 31
points whilst Chris Smith produced a round of high quality for a gross figure of
78 giving him 32 points.
In the second flight cores were slightly better with Jesper Hansen and Brian
Shaw sharing third place with 32 points, Dave Lehane coming in from the
wilderness with 34 points for second and John Chelo taking the fight with 35
points.
Chris Smith took the ‘2’s pot after a consummate birdie on the second hole and
the Booby Bevy went to Mr Len for an abject round of mistimed shots and “iffy”
putting on greens he normally adores! However the day will be remembered for the
quality of Chris Smith’s round not the errors of others!
Anttonen,
all rhythm off blues
The Pattaya Golf Society ended the week with a visit to Pleasant
Valley on Friday, 25th April. The course is always well irrigated and it was no
surprise to find soft fairways and the decision to go from the blue tees may
have been the cause for some poor returns, especially as the wind was also up
for the day.
A full Thai turnout at the same time meant the PGS had to start on the tenth tee
which was not the best idea the club have ever had. The tough and tight nine
needs to be played when joints are supple and minds are receptive to strategy
and certainly not at the start of the round.
In third place was Alan Flynn with 34 points and only one point ahead was Brian
Talbot, so consistent yet again. The winner was no surprise with Erik Anttonen
striking the ball so well at present and his 38 points also included a birdie
‘2’ on the seventeenth as well as representing the best gross of the day.
The bar’s non-winners ice cool “freebie” went to Gerner Lykke on the eve of his
return to Denmark and the Booby Bevy went to Larry Ang for the lowest nine hole
score of the day.

Selwood signs off in style
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
John Hackett (right) and Derek
Brook (left) with one of Bert’s finest.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, April 22, Crystal Bay – Stableford
With half the Tropical Bert’s golfers still not back from
escaping the joy of being soaked in Pattaya the previous week, it was a
relatively small group that went down to Crystal Bay to try and get the golf
swing going after a week’s break.
A quick book in saw us on the first tee with the test for the day to be the
C & A Nines. The C layout, in my opinion, tends to be the hardest so to get
away on this nine into a strong wind set the day up to be a struggle. Still,
after not playing for the best part of a fortnight it was a pleasure to get
out on the course. That was until the ball started to go where it wanted, as
it usually does in a strong wind.
The course on the day was in quite good condition as recent rain had
softened it quite a bit, so it was possible to get a good strike on the
fairways and the rough was not too bad, with it being dry for some time. The
big no here was the greens that have all sorts of different grasses on them.
Some places on the greens are a totally different colour and some allow the
ball to run while others are like velcro. Still, I suppose it is the same
for all.
Round over it was back to the clubhouse and into the showers. Here the good
news was that many of the showers had been worked on so could be classed as
refurbished! This was a fine day out and well enjoyed by all the players.
The winner on the day was John Hackett with 39 points ahead of your scribe,
Derek Brook, in second with 38. In third we had a three way count back on 34
points that saw Dick Warberg in third, Takeshi Hakozaki fourth and Dave
Cooper just losing out.
Near Pins: Takeshi, Max Scott (2), Barry Oates
Friday, April 25, Greenwood – Stableford
With many of our regulars participating in ANZAC Memorial Day
activities at Kanchanaburi, it was a small but enthusiastic group that met
at Tropical Bert’s on Friday.
Following a quick check in at the course at a pleasingly low season rate,
the first group was off C-1 on time, with the nines on the day being C and
B. The Course not crowded so all were looking forward to a reasonably quick
round and it went as anticipated for a while but then the lightning started
and the ensuing thunder storm sent the players to find cover. However, being
used to golf in ‘The Tropics’, the group waited it out, gave the course a
chance to dry out a little and then continued, albeit an hour later than
expected, and all a bit damp.
Round over it was into a quick shower and then into cars for the quick trip
back to Bert’s. As the scorecards were collected and reviewed it became
clear that the rain had not hampered the group’s ability to play and score
well.
Congratulations today went to Carl Selwood on his final day of golf before
heading home; Carl took first place with a fine 43 points. He was followed
by Andre Van Dyk who continued his recent fine form with 39 points and
second place. Brian Parish then beat out John Hackett, both also showing
good form recently, for third with 37 points.
Thanks to Andre and Brian Gabe for stepping up and organising the day as the
normal suspects were busy elsewhere. T.T.F.N.

Tim Hake departs in winning fashion
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Tim Hake, Chris Voller and Kari
Kuparinen.
Monday, April 21, Pattana – Stableford
There were only two divisions out today with the cut at 6-12 in division 1 and
19+ in division 2. The A course was still closed today and we started on
everyone’s favourite opening hole, the first on the B course.
Kari Kuparinen, playing off 5, returned the best score of the day, winning
division 1 with 34 points to finish three ahead of Chris Voller in second. Guy
Russell topped the division 2 scoring with 33 points and Chris Slota claimed
second on 29.
Iain Speirs birdied C2 and Chris Voller B7 to split the ‘2’s pot in division 1
while in division 2 two there was a rollover to Wednesday.
Wednesday, April 23, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
We managed to tee off 10 minutes ahead of schedule today
but after nine holes there were a few moans that the course was in a very hard
condition and that balls were running through the greens on every hole.
In division 2, Burnie Sinclair beat Chris Slota 19/17 on count back to take the
win, both finishing with 38 points each. In his last game with us for a while,
Tim Hake topped division 1 with 34 points and Chris Voller took second with 33.
Andy Crabb birdied the 7th for the only ’2’ of the day and sole possession of
the division 1 pot.
Friday, April 23, Eastern Star - Stablefordd
Our largest turnout of the week with seven groups out and
the cut set at 5-15 in division 1 and 17+ in division 2.
The best score returned today came in division 2 from Tony Bliss, playing off 18
and shooting a fine 38 points. Frank Kelly was second with 36 and Iain Walsh
took third on 35.
Keith Woolley was the winner in division 1 with 37 points, one ahead of Jon
Batty in second and Mark Stanley placed third with 35.
Near pins went to Terry Madsen, Marty Rock, Chris Voller, Ray Gott and Walter
Weber.
Bill Bertram and Keith Wooley split the division 1 ‘2’s kitty while in division
2 a double rollover ensues to next Friday.
The fairways and tees here at Eastern Star were the best we have seen for a long
time but unfortunately the greens were very coarse and slow. The management
later assured us that improvement work on the greens will take place now the low
season has started.

Nyborg on top at Lakeside
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Roger Mitchell (right) -
winner
of the KPK voucher at Eastern Star.
Monday, April 21, Royal Lakeside –
Stableford
A welcome return to normality today following the craziness of Pattaya
Songkran, but it was only a small group of golfers that turned out for the
visit to Royal Lakeside.
An uneventful trip up the Chonburi by-pass saw us arrive at the course in
under an hour, and a pleasant surprise awaited us when there were no other
golfers to be seen. We tee’d off at our leisure and throughout the round we
didn’t see another golfer on the course, either ahead or behind us –
millionaire’s golf indeed.
The weather was hot but a steady breeze kept conditions bearable, and the
only downside to the day was that the greens were a little bumpy, being in
the process of recovering from recent coring.
Lakeside is a challenging course off the blue tees (6,653 yards) and not
many golfers manage to play better than their handicap here. Today though,
Thomas Nyborg was the exception, shooting 38 points (admittedly off a very
dodgy handicap!) to take the overall win, with Colin Greig taking second
place, one point clear of Tore Eliassen.
Steve Durey was playing only his third game since a long layoff following a
knee operation, and he’s still struggling to regain his previous form, but
did manage to win two near pin prizes.
1st Thomas Nyborg (27) 38pts
2nd Colin Greig (6) 36pts
3rd Tore Eliassen (18) 35pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig, Gerry Cooney and Steve Durey (2).
Wednesday, April 23, Burapha B & D – Stableford
Fourteen golfers today for our first visit of the year
to Burapha, which only comes onto our schedule when the low season rates
kick in. We were allocated to play the unusual combination of the B and D
nines which were the courses used for the Singha Open tournament held here
the previous week.
We set off with some trepidation, knowing from previous experience that the
rough is set up to be penal when professional tournaments are held here, but
in all fairness it wasn’t as severe as we expected, although the course
still proved to be a tough test.
The round progressed smoothly until a storm rolled in as the final group
reached the ninth hole, but the rain cleared within 20 minutes and after a
brief refreshment break, the remainder of the round was completed in bright
sunshine.
Geoff Parker and Peter Habgood were the only players to play to their
handicap on the day and finished level on 36 points, but Peter took the
overall honours on the count back (18 points on the back nine).
Ken Young managed to claim his first near pin prize of the year after
successfully managing to find his way to the course - unlike the previous
week, when he drove to the Navy course only to find everyone else was
playing at Pattana!
Only three near pins were claimed, by Geoff Parker and Gerry Cooney along
with Ken.
1st Peter Habgood (21) 36pts
2nd Geoff Parker (15) 36pts
3rd Geoff Cox (16) 34pts
Friday, April 25, Eastern Star – Stableford
This was our first visit to the Eastern Star course
since October last year, when the management brought in a voucher system for
the high season which didn’t suit our and probably most other local
societies’ needs.
Although the car park was quite busy, they must have been early starters,
and our first group teed off at their leisure with only a two-ball in sight
ahead of them.
The course was generally in good shape but the greens have always been a
problem here, and today they were even slower and more inconsistent than
ever. Nevertheless our return visit was enjoyed by most players, none more
so then Roger Mitchell who picked up his second win of the month. Today’s
win brings him into contention for the April Golfer of the Month award, with
two games remaining.
Gerry Cooney who is also a contender (and probably the favourite) took
second place ahead of Peter Habgood.
At the presentation back at The Ranch, Roger Mitchell was presented with the
KPK Foods voucher, and had to request directions to find this popular farang
food shop, which he’d never heard of before!
Only two near pin prizes were claimed, by Roger Mitchell and Thomas Nyborg,
both of whom picked up their first NP prizes of the year.
1st Roger Mitchell (25) 37pts
2nd Gerry Cooney (13) 35pts
3rd Peter Habgood (21) 34pts
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play
out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and
almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play on Mondays, Wednesdays, and
Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf
competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new
players are always welcome. Contact “Buff” on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663
for all enquiries. You can find all the news, schedules and results on our

Rosco & Lumpy take out inaugural Diggers Cup
PSC golf from the Billabong Golf Bar
George and Linda Barrie with Kiwi Bill.
Monday, April 21, Eastern Star - Stableford
Eastern Star was the order of the day and we were off to an early start
on a deserted golf course. Everyone made it apart from Willie was still
having a cup of coffee while the rest of the boys were teeing off as it
was advertised as a 10.05 tee off. Sorry Willie.
The course was in great condition apart from the greens which were very
slow. We have to thank George Barrie for looking after the golfers
today, thanks for a job well done mate.
Rosco
and Lumpy with the Diggers Cup.
The scores were quite good with a count back on 37 points for first,
second and third. Bill Rogers with 20 points on the back nine got third,
second went to Owen Walkley with 21 and Chopper took first place with
22.
Tom Hand recorded the only “2’ of the day.
Wednesday, April 23, Green Valley - Stableford
Green Valley provided another challenge once again with its
new (and very wrong) layout. There were also a few grumbles about the
greens being cored and sanded but this has to be done and there will be
no course that won’t be undertaking similar remedial work during the low
season. Apart from that the course was in great condition and a pleasure
to play.
We got away to an early start and all got in before any rain came. There
was some thunder in the distance and some rain on the way back to the
bar but that was it.
The greens can’t have been that bad today as the scores were all in the
upper 30s bracket. There was a count back on 35 points for fifth place
between Auke and Brian Maddox, with Auke getting the nod due to a better
back nine. Fourth place went to John Anderson with 36 points, third to
Steve Kilner with 37 and in second was Eng Cotterell with a fine 38
points. Coming out on top today was Owen Walkley with a great 40-point
haul.
JJ Harney managed to get the only ‘2’ of the day and in his inimitable
way claimed he paid twice so should get double the prize money. Good try
mate but no luck.
Friday, April 25, Silky Oak – 2-person scramble
The Billabong played the inaugural Diggers Cup today at Silky
Oak to commemorate ANZAC Day. The morning started with a dawn service at
5.30 a.m., compliments of Lumpy and Noodle at their house, with the
traditional playing of the last post and George Barrie reciting the ode
to the remembrance of the men and women who sacrificed so much. After
the service it was into the traditional rum and milk and a sausage
sizzle.
This will be an annual tournament and will always take place on ANZAC
Day regardless of what day of the week that falls.
We had ten groups out today and we teed off promptly with no major
hold-ups. It was decided by mutual consent that because we had a few
drinks prior to the game, we should play off the whites today, which
made things a bit easier.
Third place went to Kiwi Bill Marsden and George Barrie with a score of
net 66.8. In second was the duo of Paul Greenaway and Paul Bourke with a
net 66, but taking the top prize and bragging rights for the year was
the team of Lumpy Russell and Rosco Langloulant on a great score of 62.6
and winning by a quite a margin. It must be noted that Scotty Qua and
his playing partner Bob Philp could not get a putt to fall but Lumpy and
Rosco were knocking them in from anywhere and everywhere. A great round
of golf fellas and the bragging rights are all yours!
Note: The Billabong golf club is situated just off Siam Country
Club Road looking straight down Lake Mabprachan. Give Bob a call on 082
204 3411 if you are looking for a game.

Horrocks storms home
with 45-pointer
PSC golf from The Caddyshack
Ed Horrocks fired a superb 45
points at Green Valley.
Songkran is finally over for another year and things got
back to normal on Monday, April 21 was at Green Valley where our winner was
Mel Davis (H/cap 16) with 40 points. Phil Cawse (16) was 3 shots back on 37
points to edge out Ted Gardner (9) with 36.
Rick
Culley (right) took the win at Burapha.
Two days later on Wednesday we had a trip to Burapha where the rates are
back to being affordable again after the high season. This course is always
in great shape and taking full advantage of the conditions was Rick Culley
(15) who surprised himself with 39 points. We had 2 players locked on 38
points and Peter Henderson (16) took the count back for second spot from Ben
Findon.
Friday it was back home to Green Valley and everything finally went right
for Ed Horrocks (23) who romped home with 45 points. A dejected Phil Cawse
(16) thought his 42 points was good enough but he will have to try harder
next time. Third place went to a familiar face in the form of Ted Gardner
(9) who finished another 3 shots back with 39 points.
Note: The Caddyshack is located on Soi 17 off 3rd Road or soi 8 off
Thepprasit Road. All golfers are welcome and reservations are taken at 081

‘Michelle’ strikes gold
The Backyard Golf Society
After several weeks without sufficient numbers to
have a competition, it was a very hot and tiring day for the
Backyard Golfers at Emerald last Friday. The recent hot weather has
left the course very dry with numerous areas requiring rain, or at
least watering urgently.
The winner this week and having ‘her’ last game before heading to
Old Blighty was ‘Michelle’ Chatt with 37 points. The near-pin award
also went to Michelle. The skins were hard to come by with Golden
Trowel’s Boyfriend winning the most with 7, followed by Jimmy
2-Stone with 5, 4 to Andy “The Deadliest Catch” Crabb and singles to
Dan ‘The Diet Whiskey Man’ and Michelle Chatt.
Down the road then for the traditional post-game beverage
consumption session where Michelle was a no-show but she did provide
the funds to buy a round with the day’s big win. Our un-regulated
custom of the winner buying a round thus continues even if the
winner decided not to attend. Apparently getting a re-entry visa
trumps a few coldies….something very strange indeed.
Several players were away over the Songkran dry period and we are
likely to see low numbers for the next few months too as players
disperse to various areas of the globe. With the weather so hot it’s
probably not a bad time to be away, but we cannot complain about
that, better than the cold for sure.

Beck’s back nine blitz earns victory at Green Valley
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
(From left): Frank
Connor, Elsabe, Barry McIntosh, Alex Graham & Kim Danboise.
Monday, April 21, Burapha -
Stableford
A small field of 19 Outbackers played the nearly empty B
and D nines, this time both from the white tees which resulted in
better scores than previously.
The greens were as good as they have been for some time, although
the rough on both nines remains brutal and needs mowing. Not that
this seemed to worry the straight-hitting Bruce Mcadam, who won Div
B with 37pts to beat regular West Aussie visitor, Shane Crane with
36 and Bob Lindborg 35.
In Div A, John Cunningham recorded the day’s best score of 39pts to
win from Geoff Stimpson (38) and Mark Kembrey (37).
Finally, welcome back to Alex Graham and Roy Barrell.
There were five ‘2’s from Alex Graham, Peter Nixon & John Cunningham
(D2) and John Cunningham & Geoff Stimpson (D8).
Div A (0-16)
1st John Cunningham (6) 39pts
2nd Geoff Stimpson (10) 38pts
3rd Mark Kembrey (16) 37pts
Div B (17+)
1st Bruce McAdam (25) 37pts
2nd Shane Crane (21) 36pts
3rd Bob Lindborg (21) 35pts
Tuesday, April 22, Laem Chabang – Stableford
As the ‘B’ nine remains closed, we found ourselves once
again on the C and A loops, starting on C. With just three groups,
we were away a little earlier than the official post time and the
round played at a reasonable pace.
Barry Copestake came out the traps very fast to score a fantastic
24pts on the tricky front nine before faltering a little on the back
to win comfortably with 39pts. He was four up on the flying Scot,
Alex Graham, who tucked another tidy round under his belt of 35 to
follow his 36pts at Burapha, and beating playing partner Chopper on
count back.
Sugar Ray got the only ‘2’ on A2.
1st Barry Copestake (15) 39pts
2nd Alex Graham (9) 35pts
3rd Kerry Rothman (12) 35pts
Wednesday, April 23, Bangpra - Stableford
Four full groups at a reasonably quiet, yet beautiful
Bangpra today in muggy conditions, making for a very hot sweltering
day.
There’s nothing easy about this course; it’s long, with plenty of
trouble about if one errs from the fairways and although the greens
have been made a little easier as they have allowed the grass to
grow a little, they are by no means a pushover.
Alex, who took the win with another solid round to score 35pts, said
“I struck the ball really well and should have scored more but I
couldn’t get my short irons to hold the greens”, but otherwise he
was very satisfied and enjoyed the course.
Sel Wegner found himself in second place with 32 and also picked up
the prize for the only ‘2’, whilst one of our Perth visitors, Frank,
took third on 31. Kim Danboise (also 31) and Barry McIntosh (30)
filled the remaining two podium places.
The monkeys put on a display not seen here for a long time, many
carrying young, whilst the others were charging around like lunatics
and very funny to watch climbing a tree to about 12 feet before
leaping off into the nearby lake fully spreadeagled and landing with
a belly flop.
For the second time this week, there was only ‘2’, this time from
Sel Wegner on the 8th.
1st Alex Graham (9) 35pts
2nd Sel Wegner (15) 32pts
3rd Frank Connor (16) 31pts
4th Kim Danboise (20) 31pts
5th Barry McIntosh (20) 30pts
Friday, April 25, Green Valley - Stableford
25 Outbackers at Green Valley today, quite a few less
than usual but it was Anzac Day and some guys were paying tribute to
this special day.
I have just looked up last year’s records and Green Valley sanded
and cored the greens this time last year, resulting in the course
being in below average condition with many of the fairways burnt and
with parts of the rough looking like the Sahara Desert.
It was very disappointing to many of the regulars, as Green Valley
usually maintains a high standard but although the greens had a few
lumps and bumps the scores didn’t reflect this.
Kerry Beck’s round started with 1pt, 1pt, wipe, 1pt and then on the
back nine he shot a gross 34, ending up with 41pts, the day’s top
score and winning Div A - well done Mr Beck. Martin Kingswood, hot
from his golf in Hua Hin, put another good round together to score
38pts for second and welcome to Matt Badman, playing with us for the
first time today, who also had 38, losing out on count back. The
very consistent Alex Graham finished his week’s golf with another 36
for fourth.
Barry McIntosh’s chip-in on the 18th, gave him a five-pointer,
elevating him to first place in Div B with 39pts to beat Andy Makara
on c/b and with Suzi’s game still improving whilst John is away, she
took third with 38 and Waldo fourth, heading a three-way c/b on 35.
Walter Pinichi got the only ‘2’ on the 12th.
Div A 0-15)
1st Kerry Beck (11) 41pts
2nd Martin Kingswood (13) 38pts
3rd Matt Badman (11) 38pts
4th Alex Graham (9) 36pts
Div B (16+)
1st Barry McIntosh (20) 39pts
2nd Andy Makara (26) 39pts
3rd Suzi Lawton (25) 38pts
4th Stephen Blazsanyik (16) 35pts
Note: On Monday 5th May, Jack will be hosting his 2 person
Birthday scramble/ambrose at Burapha, tee time as usual at 9.30am.
The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road along
Soi Siam Country. Call Jack on 081 578 1956.

Sam & Trev shine
at Pleasant Valley
PSC golf from Siam Country Resort
Neil toasts Trevor Taylor.
Tuesday, April 22, Pleasant
Valley - Stableford
Tuesday saw us visit Pleasant Valley, where if golfers
have a bad day they find it easy to blame the course. The course was
in good order, and Sam Gettinby (H/cap 23) found it very much to his
liking, shooting a fine 41 points.
Trevor Taylor (36) recently returned from an extended absence,
continued his improved play and could be considered unlucky as his
40 points would normally be plenty to show the way. He was however
well pleased with his 2nd spot, and topped it off with a near pin,
along with Jonathan who got 2.
Thursday, April 24, Treasure Hill - Stableford
A long awaited return to Treasure Hill on this Thursday,
where the course is significantly longer than Tuesday’s venue, with
the course in fine condition.
Jonathan Pratt (11) had an awesome back 9 of 20 points, (with 2
wipes), to sign for a solid 35 points, edging Jeff Wylie (6) into
2nd spot.
It was good to see the return of some of our regular English holiday
makers, Iain & Chris, but missed old mates Lol & Keith who didn’t
make the trip this year.
The near pins were spread around between Jonathan, Iain & Jeff.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just
off Siam Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11,
turn right after 50 metres, with the venue on the left another 200
metres along. Golf from here is generally played on Tuesday &
Thursday, with the Resort hosting prompt presentations on both days.
As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies &
seniors (>60s) who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089
094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers
& good golfing!

Fred Dineley wins Anzac Day Medal
PSC golf from The Growling Swan
Fred Dineley, Gerd Riedler, Rita
Zoebelli & Paul Moloney.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, April 21, Greenwood – Stableford
After a week off from Pattaya golf at The Growling Swan
we were all keen to resume activities although for some of us we
were probably all “golfed out” after a terrific week in the
Kanchanaburi area.
We had 20 golfers signed up Monday but after a “no show” we were
left with 19 and we assembled at the bar in readiness for our trip
to the Greenwood Golf Course. We were happy to welcome Dick
Braimbridge’s partner, Wan, who was playing with us for the first
time, and also the return of Gerd Riedler & Karl Lang.
There were hardly any other golfers at Greenwood when we arrived so
we knew it was to be a day of “millionaires golf” and we headed off
to the C1 tee after being told we would be playing C & B nines, in
that order.
Graham Buckingham, Dave Neal & Mike
Allidi.
It was very hot with not much breeze as our first
four-ball teed off 5 minutes behind schedule at 10.05 am and we
proceeded at a fair pace on a course which was in very good “nick”
with lush fairways and greens that at times were rock hard but true.
The lack of patronage caused them to not open a couple of drink
stops so I for one struggled to the C7 tee before being able to
quench my thirst but we managed to soldier on, completing the round
in four hours and twenty minutes. It had been a very enjoyable day
with all four of us playing some steady golf and the company was
excellent.
Mike Allidi once again showed the way with a terrific 70 gross to
win the A Division with 41 points. With 2 golfers on 39 points a
count back was required which resulted in “Big” Bill Steinman (21
back nine) taking second place from Sal Brizzi (20 point back nine)
in third spot.
Division B winner was Graham “Grunter” Buckingham (last year’s
Kanchanaburi overall winner but this year well down the field) with
37 points, three points clear of Thientong Charoenrung in second
place and Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei was third with 33
points.
The Growling Swan NAGA Award (awarded to the golfer who has the
worst score on the day) was won by Dave Neal
Division A (0-14)
1st Mike Allidi (3) 41pts
2nd Bill Steinman (10) 39pts
3rd Sal Brizzi (6) 39pts
Division B (15+)
1st Graham Buckingham (22) 37pts
2nd Thientong Charoenrung (18) 34pts
3rd Alain Taddei (15) 33pts
Near Pins: B5 – Mike Allidi; C6 – Martin Todd
Long Putts: B9 – John Davis; C9 – Frankie Sharratt
Friday, April 25, Mountain Shadow – Stableford
ANZAC Day – 25th April – is probably Australia’s most
important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the first
major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces
during the First World War.
Two years ago at The Growling Swan we held the inaugural Anzac Day
Tournament so naturally the tradition must continue. Many of the 31
starters assembled at The Growling Swan at 0700 hrs for a short
Memorial Service where “The Ode” was delivered, the Last Post was
played and we all observed a minute’s silence to pay tribute to
those brave men and women. It was then time to partake of the
traditional rum & milk (just in shot glasses) and then wait for the
ones that could not make the early service and we welcomed back Geri
Crilly from Australia and Paul Marshall from Brisbane.
After a 42 minute drive we arrived at the course and our first
group, a three-ball, teed off 10 minutes early at 9.50 am in very
hot conditions with very little wind and although there was a Thai
5-ball directly in front of us we proceeded at a steady pace for the
early part of the round.
The golf course was in fine condition with very well maintained
greens but whilst playing off the blue tees it was apparent that
there would not be too many really good scores and that indeed
turned out to be the case.
It was necessary to rest & drink a couple of times due to the heat
and towards the end we were slowed down by the group in front who
were also “suffering”. We managed to finish a very enjoyable round
on this important day for Australia in four hours & fifteen minutes.
The winner of the Anzac Day Medal, for the second year in a row was
Fred Dineley with a terrific 39 points. In Division A the winner was
Gerd Riedler (18 point back nine) with 34 points on a count back
from Ebrahim (16 point back nine) and Mike Gosden was third on 32
points. In fourth place came Phil Taylor with 31 points & Sal Brizzi
was fifth with 30 points.
Rita Zoebelli continued her fine form and won Division B with 37
points and Gary Monley came second on 33, 4 points ahead of Graham
“Grunter” Buckingham in third. With 3 golfers scoring 28 points
another count back was needed which saw Lindsay Slender (16 point
back nine) finish fourth from Andrew “Turtle” Allen (15 point back
nine) in fifth spot and Ken Hole (14 point back nine) just missed
out.
Anzac Day Trophy
1st Fred Dineley (24) 39pts
Division A (0-18)
1st Gerd Riedler (7) 34pts
2nd Ebrahim (14) 34pts
3rd Mike Gosden (10) 32pts
4th Phil Taylor (15) 31pts
5th Sal Brizzi (6) 30pts
Division B (19+)
1st Rita Zoebelli (23) 37pts
2nd Gary Monley (33) 33pts
3rd Graham Buckingham (22) 29pts
4th Lindsay Slender (24) 28pts
5th Andrew Allen (32) 28pts
Near Pins: 5th– Ebrahim, 8th – Graham Buckingham, 15th – Bill
Steinman, 17th – Gerd Riedler
Long Putts: 9th – Ian Masterson, 18th – Bill Steinman
Long Drives: Kevin Waycott, Lindsay Slender
The Growling Swan NAGA Cap was won on a count back by Paul “Muncha”
Moloney who accepted the cap in good spirit, even though he had
declared himself the winner of the Anzac Day Medal 24 hours earlier
– it may be better not to make those kind of predictions in the
future Muncha!
It was then back to The Growling Swan where presentations were
conducted and there was a large crowd there enjoying the excellent
facilities and celebrating this important day in the Australian
Calendar. We thanked Growling Swan Mine Host for sponsoring the day
and also providing the delicious meal which was enjoyed by all.
Note: Growling Swan Golf, the home of friendly golf in
Pattaya welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high handicappers
alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play Mondays &
Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar) in
Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. For
bookings or more information please contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or

JP and Peter share the week
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, April 20, Green Valley
- Stableford
A Flight
1st JP Maffray (14) 41pts
2nd Lawrie McBride (15) 40pts
3rd Ian Pickles (12) 38pts
B Flight
1st Peter Henshaw (18) 45pts
2nd John Ianson (27) 43pts
3rd Ulrik Sinding (28) 39pts
With the hot and humid conditions, and the difficult greens which
have recently been cored and sanded, it was surprising that the
scoring was of a very high standard. It was also surprising that the
competitors managed to find the correct tee from the last green that
they played due to the alterations to the course layout that have
even the members as confused as the head bottle washer, who is
reputed to be the architect (sic) of the changes.
Sunday winners - Peter Henshaw (left) with JP Maffray.
Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw led home the B Flight with an
outstanding 45 points and secured the man of the match honours.
Peter was two clear of John Ianson and a further four shots clear of
Denmark’s Ulrik Sinding.
JP Maffray, who did not realize how difficult the course was playing
but had the benefit of having the head bottle washer’s sister as his
caddy, won the senior flight with a faultless 41 points ahead of
Lawrie McBride by a shot. Ian Pickles rounded out the flight with an
impressive 38 points.
JP Maffray was also the sole heir to a very healthy 2’s pot.
Tuesday, April 22, Bangpra B & D - Stableford
1st Peter Godfrey (16) 41pts
2nd Nick Shaw (15) 39pts
3rd Freddy Starbeck (13) 37pts
It being the low season a tidy but passionate group took on the
David Graham –Gary Panks designed Burapha B & C layouts and the
scores were superb.
Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw had to be happy with his 39 points, that is until
Peter Godfrey entered the club house and presented his outstanding
41 points. Freddy ‘the quite one’ Starbeck tided up the flight and
shared the 2’s pot with Peter Moon.
Wednesday, April 23, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Bob Patterson (11) 42pts
2nd JP Maffray (14) 40pts
3rd Nick Shaw (15) 37pts
B Flight
1st Pat Regan (17) 38pts
2nd Colin Davis (17) 37pts
3rd Peter Henshaw (17) 36pts
Bob ‘the Senator tea party Wisconsin’ Patterson, who we do not get
to see a lot of these days, was a sight for sore eyes today, or at
least he was until he put a 42 point A Flight winning and man of the
match lashing on the field.
Bob’s score made JP Maffray’s 40 points look kind of ordinary but it
did gain JP the second spot on the podium. Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw made
his second pay window appearance of the week as he rounded out the
flight.
Irishman Pat Regan (no relation to Ronald) led B Flight into the
barn with a very useful 38 points. The Donkey, who has been out to
pasture recently, returned to form as he lifted the silver a stroke
back and closing the flight was Peter ‘the silver surfer’ as he
added to Sunday’s demolition. Peter puts his recent form down to the
black stuff, and plenty of it!
Nick Shaw, Ian Pickles and Geoff Pratt shared the 2’s pot.
Friday, April 25, Mt. Shadow - Stableford
A Flight
1st JP Maffray (14) 39pts
2nd Takeshi Hakozaki (13) 38pts
3rd Ian Pickles (12) 33pts
B Flight
1st Christian Boysen (18) 39pts
2nd Jim Bell (19) 33pts
3rd Peter Shaw (28) 31pts
A fair sized crowd for any season turned out to take on the
beautiful Mountain Shadow course and for many it was a little too
tough to handle.
JP Maffray and Christian Boysen handled it best; JP led A Flight
with a flight winning 39 points that made him co-man of the match
this was also his second win this week and his third pay window
visit. JP was closely followed up the podium steps by Takeshi
Hakozaki who was one stroke off the pace. Ian Pickles ‘added a bit
of spice’ as he closed the flight with 33 points.
B Flight’s Christian Boysen was the other man of the match with his
39 points. Christian was six clear of second placed Jimmy ‘A-K 47’
Bell. Peter Shaw was surprised as anyone to find himself in third
place with 31 points.
The top two in B Flight, Christian Boysen and Jim Bell, shared the
2’s pot.

Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League
200 bowler Kran Nielsen.
After a week-long water throwing break, the new
bowling season resumed last Friday. Green Tree remains in first
place although they lost three points to VFW Post 9876. Bowling was
not that good for either team as they might have been rusty from the
water festival.
Nok Ostbo bowled a 505 series to help her Balloon team to a two-two
draw against Brother D.
Canada bowled very well as they won three points from Café Kronborg.
Pao Orawan bowled a 520 series and Tue Pettae had a 550 for Canada.
Kran Nielsen led Café Kronborg and all other bowlers in the league
with games of 217, 191 and 214 for a 622 series.
Ooy Pluemkamon bowled a 515 series to lead Bavaria to a two and one
half point win over Indiana. Preecha had a 512 series for Indiana.
