Pattaya celebrates
Chinese New Year

Lions and dragons will dance from morning to night when Pattaya
celebrates Chinese New Year Jan. 31.
The day will begin with Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome leading a religious
ceremony at city hall, followed by the first of four Chinese lion and
dragon parades. Additional demonstrations will take place at the Prince
Chumphon monument outside the Naval Radio Station on Pratamnak Hill, at
the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation in Naklua and, in the
evening, down Walking Street.
Religious ceremonies also will be performed at all but the Walking
Street parades.
In the evening, acting Culture Minister Sonthaya Kunplome will open the
city’s official Chinese New Year celebration at Lan Po Park.
The festival will celebrate the traditions, art and culture of Chinese
descendants in Thailand and promote tourism to generate income for the
Naklua community. Festivities begin at 5 p.m. A lion and dragon show
will be held at 7 p.m.
The city is also holding a Chinese Girls pageant in Naklua, open to
girls age 9 and under with Chonburi residency. Scholarships worth 48,000
baht will be awarded as prizes.
The festival will also feature the cultural shows and concerts by Pao
Paowaree and the Blueberry Girls.
