Lawton charge seals victory at Lotus Valley

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Monday, Jan. 20, Burapha - Stableford
Not only did John Cunningham achieve every golfer’s dream of a hole in one, but five holes later he had an eagle (John holed his tee shot on the par 3 C5 then holed a 185yd five-wood for an eagle on the par five D1). However those efforts, which reaped him 36pts, were not quite enough for him to win the day, that honour going to Greg Hill who carded the day’s best of 39. Pete Stonebridge also scored 36pts, losing out on c/b to John with Steve Mann one further back on 35.

Hole in one hero John Cunningham (centre) with Bruce McAdam (left) and Greg Hill.

Bruce McAdam was the winner of a below average scoring Div B with 34pts whilst Ivan Plunkett beat Ed Turner on c/b, both on 31pts.
For the record it was a cool windy day for the 23 Outbackers who played the C and D nines.
Tough luck for the three players who had ‘2’s as John scooped the ‘2’s pool and later in the day he celebrated back at the Outback with a bell ring... thanks John.
Div A (0-18)
1st Greg Hill (18) 39pts
2nd John Cunningham (6) 36pts
3rd Pete Stonebridge (16) 36pts
4th Stephen Mann (10) 35pts
Div B (19+)
1st Bruce McAdam (26) 34pts
2nd Ivan Plunkett (24) 31pts
3rd Ed Turner (21) 31pts
4th Bob Mattes (21) 26pts
Tuesday, Jan. 21. Lotus Valley/Royal Hills Tour – Day 1
Originally planned as a six group trip based on a suggestion of Steve Mann’s, the first of the Outback’s monthly mini tours grew into a fully fledged 32 person event.
Spread over three days, with the first round to be played at the fantastic Lotus Valley course, the group left early on Tuesday morning to arrive at the course around 10 a.m. to be greeted by a good stiff wind and temperatures bordering on what we would call cold at around the 23 degrees mark.

John Lawton (centre) with Paul Bourke (right) and John Stafford.

Unfortunately our 10.30 a.m. tee time had been put back half an hour due to a shortage of caddies but at least we were compensated by the benefit of a two-tee start, which enabled everybody to get round in good time before the hour and a bit journey on to Royal Hills, where we were due to overnight.
The best score for the day was recorded by Chris Thompson, who won Div C with 39pts from Bruce McAdam on 36. Noddy Moyle (35pts), who has at last started to play the way we know he can took third place, with Ed Turner one further back on 34.
No stranger to the leader-boards this year is John Lawton, who once again proved that all you need to do is change your golf swing to improve your game, even if he doesn’t know which swing change he is on. Whichever the model, John won Div B with an excellent 38pts from Sugar (34) and General Jack (33), beating John Stafford on c/b.

(From left): Sugar Ray Handford, Paul Bourke, Guy Brennan and Chris Thompson at Royal Hills Golf Resort.

Somewhat surprisingly, Paul Bourke’s handicap has drifted out to 12, which put him in good stead for the overall three-day tournament and he must have been disappointed to score only 34pts, even though it was enough to win Div A from Andy Butterworth (33) and Paul with his son Scott one further back, both on 32.
There were four ‘2’s from David Davies (3rd), Andy Butterworth & Stephen Mann (8th) and Jack Moseley (17th).
Div A (0-13)
1st Paul Bourke (12) 34pts
2nd Andy Butterworth (10) 33pts
3rd Paul Greenaway (11) 32pts
4th Scott Greenaway (5) 32pts
Div B (14-19)
1st John Lawton (19) 38pts
2nd Sugar Ray Handford (18) 34pts
3rd Jack Moseley (19) 33pts
4th John Stafford (18) 33pts
Div C (20+)
1st Chris Thompson (23) 39pts
2nd Bruce McAdam (26) 36pts
3rd Noddy Moyle (21) 35pts
4th Ed Turner (21) 34pts
Wednesday, Jan. 22, Lotus Valley/Royal Hills Tour – Day 2
We arrived around 5.30 p.m. Tuesday at the Royal Hills Resort in Nakhon Nayok and check in was easy but on this occasion we were all housed in the 4 bed villas directly across the road from the main reception as the hotel was full. The villas are OK, each of the four rooms having their own key but they did look a little tired and hot water was a bit hit and miss.
After a few bevvies at the bar in plummeting temperatures, many of us made our way across to the restaurant, near the first tee, for a bite to eat and a glass of wine or two but it didn’t get any warmer (about 16 deg), not helped by a broken door that could not be closed.
Next morning, we were due to tee off at 9 a.m. and the course looked wonderful in very sunny conditions and blue sky, but it was still very cold with a strong wind blowing. We were away just about on time and were able to play at a good pace as there were very few players out in front of us.
The course, I have to say, was in about the best condition I have ever seen it but the grainy greens still played havoc with many a player’s score. The Div C guys seemed to come out worst with 32pts being the top score from Noddy Moyle, and a surprised Dave Earthrowl took second on 29. Chris Thompson came down to earth after his good round at Lotus, to record 28pts for third place and Ed Turner filled the last podium slot on 26, beating B2 on c/b.
The top scores came in Div A as Paul Bourke and Steve Mann both had 38’s ahead of Guy Brennan (32) and Peter Eriksen (31) and Div B went to the Sugarman on 36 as General Jack recorded his second podium finish on 33, beating John Stafford again on a c/b.
Only two ‘2’s today from Noddy Moyle (13th) and Guy Brennan (16th).
Div A (0-13)
1st Bourke, Paul (12) 38pts
2nd Mann, Stephen (10) 38pts
3rd Brennan, Guy (9) 32pts
4th Erikson, Peter (6) 31pts
Div B (14-19)
1st Sugar Ray Handford (18) 36pts
2nd Jack Moseley (19) 33pts
3rd John Stafford (18) 33pts
4th Mick Indge (18) 32pts
Div C (20+)
1st Noddy Moyle (21) 32pts
2nd David Earthrowl (23) 29pts
3rd Chris Thompson (23) 28pts
4th Ed, Turner (21) 26pts
Thursday, Jan. 23, Lotus Valley/Royal Hills Tour – Day 3
We left the resort after breakfast at around 9 a.m. on our way back to Lotus Valley for the final round of this three day competition.
As usual the leaders went out last and since we had the benefit of a two-tee start, the top four groups went off the first and the bottom four off the tenth. The pace of play wasn’t too bad with less players around than there had been on Tuesday. The weather stayed fine and felt a little warmer as there was hardly any wind and it was just about the most ideal conditions anyone could wish for.
Mick Indge certainly made the most of it, scoring 42pts to win Div B by three from that man, John Lawton again with 39. Paul Greenaway took Div A on 38 from Peter Eriksen and Div C went to Bruce McAdam on 35 from Suzi with 33.
So with both Paul Bourke and the Sugarman stumbling in round three, the door was left open for John Lawton to make up a five shot deficit to win, going away by three with an overall total of 106pts. John faltered a bit over the closing stretch but held his nerve for what turned out to be -in his words – “a memorable victory.”
Mick Indge moved up from 11th place to end up in joint fourth with the Sugarman, both with 102pts and John Stafford’s closing 37 moved him up from 8th to joint 2nd with overnight leader Paul Bourke, both on 103.
Four more ‘2’s today from Mick Indge (3rd), Paul Bourke (8th), John Lawton (12th) and John Stafford chipped in for his on the 17th.
Final Standings
1st John Lawton 106pts
T2nd John Stafford 103pts
T2nd Paul Bourke 103pts
T4th Mick Indge 102pts
T4th Sugar Ray Handford 102pts
T6 Stephen Mann 100pts
T7 Peter Erikson 99pts
T8th Paul Greenaway 98pts
T8th Noddy Moyle 98pts
T10 Bruce McAdam 97pts
Friday, Jan. 24, Green Valley – Stableford
Many of the players on the Royal Hills/Lotus Valley trip had a day off from golf today, resulting in a smaller than usual field at the popular Green Valley course. 29 players turned out, divided into two divisions, each being won by the very same score, 39 points.
John O’Keefe did the business in Div A, playing off 16, narrowly beating Bob Finley and Peter LeNoury by one point and David Davies took Div B by two from the improving Greg LeBlanc and Kim Danboise (35), who beat Greg Hill on c/b.
There was only one ‘2’ on the 16th from Tom Larsen.
Div A (0-17)
1st John O’Keefe (16) 39pts
2nd Bob Finley (16) 38pts
3rd Peter LeNoury (11) 38pts
4th Jim Brackett (7) 36pts
Div B (18+)

Cotterell’s clean up at Crystal Bay

PSC golf from the Billabong Golf Bar

Owen, Eng, The birthday boy Owen, Dave and Cottee.

Monday, Jan. 20, Mt. Shadow - Stableford
It was a windy old day at Mountain Shadow today and playing from the blue tees was probably a bit harsh on the lads, but that’s the way it goes. The greens were their normal lightening fast selves and tricky too. The course was in great condition and everything was going well until we caught up with a ‘seven-ball’ that slowed things down quite considerably, although it was only the last few holes thank God.
We welcomed a friend of Sel Wegner’s today from Aussie, and he not only won the day but skinned the boys as well, much to their disgust. Coming in fourth today was Dave Lusha on a three-way count back, all on 29 points. He got the nod over Noddy Moyle and Bob Philp. Third place went to Wayne Cotterell with 30 points, second to Eng Duangwaw and first as previously stated went to our friend from Melbourne, Greg Vawdry with 38 points.
It was Owen Walkley’s birthday today so he kindly put up four near pins for the players. Owen Lloyd took two of them, Eng Duangwaw got one and the other went to the birthday boy himself, a magnificent shot off the rocks on the 17th to land about six feet away. There were three ‘2’s coming from Glyn Davies, Bill Marsden, which he chipped past the hole by about ten feet and it rolled down the hill into the hole, and the other two came from Owen Lloyd.
Wednesday, Jan. 22, Green Valley - Stableford
Standing on the first tee in the shade at Green Valley today was particularly cold, probably the coldest the scribe has experienced in ten years here in Thailand. However, once we got underway it started to warm up a bit.
The course is currently in great shape with only a few dry patches and we had a grand day out. The scores were very good considering the wind factor and it was good to see Jack Butler back in the fold after eye surgery - and he didn’t play that bad either.
It was a count back for fifth and fourth places today with Roger Ison coming in fifth with 36 points while in fourth, beating him on the count back, was Bob Finley. Third place went to Bob Philp with 37 points, his best score in ages, and taking second was Brian Wilkinson with 38. The man of the day was Pat Regan with a very fine 40 points.
There was only one ‘2’ today, coming from the ‘2’s specialist Wayne Cotterell. That’s twice in a week Cottee, well done!
Friday, Jan. 24, Crystal Bay - Stableford
What started out a very cool morning turned out to be a lovely warm day at Crystal Bay, playing the C and A loops. The course was in good condition with greens that were very tricky to putt on, however it didn’t make much difference to some as the top scores were really good.
Capt Bob should have stayed home today as the bad back got worse as the day went on and he and his partner Kiwi Bill were given a thrashing by Gentleman George, (I use the Gentleman word loosely) and Captain Colourful, a.k.a. “Kick Ass” Kev. And what a hiding it was, they never lost a hole and won handsomely, the match was over on the 12th hole.
We welcomed Capt Bob’s two mates from Oz today, Gary Ralph and Dave Palmer, and Gary got the better of Dave by ten shots.
At the top of the leader board, the Cotterell family had a great day out with Wayne taking first place with 39 points and his lovely wife Eng getting the nod for second on a count back over Greg Vawdrey, both with 38 points. It would have taken an exceptional round of golf to beat the 24 points Eng scored on the back nine and to celebrate the family rang the bell back at the bar.
There were two ‘2’s today coming from Gary Ralph and Wayne (the ‘2’s specialist) Cotterell.
Note: The Billabong Golf club is situated just off Siam Country Club Road looking straight down Lake Mabprachan. Call Bob on 082 204 3411.

2nd Ed Horrocks (20) 35pts
3rd Mel Davis (17) 34pts

Dave Hester took the honours at the society’s home course of Green Valley on Monday with 37 points. Dave finished two ahead of Ed Horrocks in second while Mel Davis, Roger Rush, Ted Gardner and Don Hachey completed the podium in that order.
Wednesday, Jan 22, Crystal Bay - Stableford
Wednesday was our away game of the week and we took the trip to Crystal Bay. The strange weather made this the coldest and windiest day of golf I have ever played in Thailand.
Despite the strong winds Dave Bramley (18) breezed to victory with an astonishing 41 points. The best of the mere mortals was Peter Henderson (19) who took second with 33 points and was in disbelief that someone could shoot 8 points better. Bill Shepley (6) was third with 32.

Dave Hester.

Friday, Jan. 24, Green Valley - Stableford
1st Ed Horrocks (20) 41pts
2nd Mel Davis (17) 38pts
3rd Peter Harris (19) 37pts
4th Dave Gibson (15) 36pts
5th Mark Williams (8) 36pts
Back to Green Valley for Friday’s game and Ed Horrocks went one better than Monday as he matched Dave Bramley high total of the week. Mel Harris was second some three points off the pace and Peter Harris was another point back in third.
Note: The Caddyshack is located on Soi 17 off 3rd Road or soi 8 off Thepprasit Road. All golfers are welcome and reservations are taken at 081 865 3104.

Hunter & Kae get the chocolates at Navy

PSC Golf from The Growling Swan

Duangjai Tusagad & Mike Gosden.

Peter Blackburn
Monday, Jan. 20, Plutaluang, East & South – Stableford
We had our smallest contingent of players for quite some time as there were 17 golfers on the starting sheet but it was a happy bunch who turned up at The Growling Swan in readiness for our trip to the Plutaluang Golf Course.
Departing the GS right on schedule at 9.00 am we headed South down Highway 3 and after a very good run arrived at the Navy Course 40 minutes later. It was a hive of activity with golfers everywhere and we were fairly certain that it would be a slow round but Hey! - the sun was shining, the grass was green and the course was looking in very good shape.

Tristan Freeman, Ernie Picken & Tom McMahon.

We were told that it would be East & South nines in that order so we trundled down to E1 where there was just one group of four Thai golfers waiting to commence. At 10.15 a.m. we got our first four-ball away and that was 33 minutes earlier than our booked tee time and we proceeded at a steady pace although there were hold ups on just about every shot. The golf course was in good condition although some of the fairways were very dry but the greens were in good shape with a mixture of quick and slow and that did catch a few people out.
This is a very good course and excellent value for money but you must expect a slow round, particularly at this time of year and be prepared for four-balls in front suddenly turning into six-balls as happened to us on the back nine. Despite the delays it was a very enjoyable round with excellent company and it was completed in the very slow time of four hours & fifty minutes.
There were just four golfers who played to their handicap or better and it was Mike “Hunter” Gosden who won Division A with a very good 42 points, with your writer, Peter “Blacky” Blackburn second just one point further back and the consistent John Davis took third place on 35 points.
The B Division winner was Duangjai “Kae” Tusagad with 39 points and Ian “Bat” Masterson was second with 36 points, 2 points ahead of Nolan “No-one” Wise in third place.
Division A (0-17)
1st Mike Gosden (13) 42pts
2nd Peter Blackburn (14) 41pts
3rd John Davis (17) 35pts
Division B (18+)
1st Duangjai Tusagad (20) 39pts
2nd Ian Masterson (36) 36pts
3rd Nolan Wise (36) 34pts
Near Pins: E5 – Ebrahim
Long Putts: E9 – Peter Blackburn, S9 – Kevin Waycott
The Growling Swan NAGA Award (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score on the day) was won by Jayson Schembri who accepted the award like the good sport that he is.
Thursday, Jan. 23, Greenwood, C & A – Stableford
An excellent field of 34 departed the GS at our scheduled time of 8.30 a.m. and we headed off and got a fairly good run up 331, arriving at the course after a 52 minute drive. It did not seem to be too busy and we were allocated the C & A nines in that order and our first four-ball teed off 7 minutes after our booked time of 10.00 a.m.
It was quite cool and there was a bit of a stiff breeze which didn’t make it any warmer and with no groups immediately ahead of us we were able to maintain a steady pace throughout the first nine. The golf course was in very good conditions and the greens were the quickest I have seen them in a long time and presented problems if you were above the hole and a fair distance away.
After completing C nine in two hours & five minutes we arrived on the tee on A1 to find a Marshall directing us to B1 as there was a fairly large and very noticeable bush fire at the bottom of A1 so off we went and teed off on B1. After our tee shots on B4 two Marshalls arrived and told us that we had to return to the A nine and continue our round by teeing off on A4. To cut a long story short they had directed just our group to the B nine and everyone else was proceeding on the A nine – TIT. We then became Group 2 and after all the messing around we completed our round in four hours & forty five minutes but notwithstanding the turmoil it had been a very pleasant round with very good company.
The winner in Division A was Sal Brizzi with a fabulous 42 points, 72 gross and was unfortunately not absent at presentations as he was not feeling very well so was laying down in one of the mini vans. I made the comment that it could not have been tiredness from hitting too many shots! In second place came veteran Don Richardson with 37 points, one point more than Gerd Riedler in third spot and Mike Allidi was fourth with 32 points.
Division B was won by Tom McMahon who had 34 points and Max “Corsets” Bracegirdle was second with 33 points. Third place went to the consistent John Davis on 32 points and Alan “Colonel” Sanders finished fourth with 31 points.
There was a count back at the top of C Division with 2 golfers on 38 points and it was Tristan Freeman (23 point back nine) who was declared the winner with his good mate Craig Wearne (16 point back nine) finishing in second place. Ian “Bat” Masterson came third with 37 points and Shane “Jockey” Young was fourth on 32 points.

Jim does the double

PSC Golf from Siam Country Resort

Tuesday, Jan. 21, Mt. Shadow - Stableford
Tuesday was a visit to Mountain Shadow and with the wind blowing a dog off a chain, under clear skies but a little cooler than normal, it was going to be a challenging day of golf. Good scores had to be earned today, with poor ball striking being punished, and positioning on the greens also at a premium.

Jeff Wylie, Jim Federspiel & Bob Edwards.

Jim Federspiel (18), who has been battling with his swing of late, was able to put everything together to shoot a creditable 36 points, while our injured golfer Bob Edwards (7) did very well to sign for 35 points.
Near pins were spread around between Bob, Jeff & Paddy.
Thursday, Jan. 23, Plutaluang - Stableford
Plutaluang was the venue for Thursday, with the wind down to a good breeze, while the skies were as clear as a bell. North & West were the allocated 9s and although the course was quite crowded, once we got going we just cruised along at an adequate pace.
The course was in good order, although the winds have certainly dried the fairways out, with the greens running smooth & true for the most part. Jim Federspiel was a clear leader today with a well compiled 35 points, while Jeff Wylie (7) & Jonathan Pratt (10) needed a count back to separate them after both signing for 32 points, with Jeff just edging Jonathan 15/14.
Near pins went to Jim & Bob on the West, while Jeff got the pair on North.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after 50 metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along. Golf from here is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the Resort hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors (>60s) who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Gabe on the march at Bangpakong

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday’s winners pose with one of Bert’s finest.

Derek Brook
Tuesday, Jan. 21, Greenwood A &C – Stableford
Some days things do not go well, on this day when I arrived at Bert’s the mini bus was there with doors open, but when the boys went out to get in it sometime later it had disappeared. We eventually got it back, but it meant many left half an hour late and put pressure on us to get to the start on time.
Surprisingly when we got to the course there were very few cars in the park and this took some pressure off, and as we got to the start tee the passengers from the bus arrived and all was well! The trick was getting the people away from the first tee and this we did, if not quite in the order we had planned it. We also got away into a very strong wind, seems normal these days. This made the day difficult, but still this is a course that is fair if you are playing well, and so we battled on.
The course itself was in fair condition and we found that with it being watered we had to dodge the sprays and the soggy patches. The ground was very firm, as I noticed after we finished and my hand was quite bruised, still at was all well playable. The greens were also in good condition so all in all a great day out and as the scores came in it was noticeable we had a few decent ones.
Back at Bert’s we announced the results and in the A Flight, 0 to 20, the winner was John Hackett with the best score of the day 38 points, ahead of Mark West in second with 36. We then had a count back on 35 points that saw Alan Sullivan in third and Doug Maiko in fourth.

Brian Gabe & Graham Buckingham.

In the B Flight the winner was John Marritt with 36 points, ahead of Graham Buckingham in second on 34 and we had another count back on 32 points that saw Max Bracegirdle in third and Don Carmody taking fourth.

Friday, Jan. 24, Bangpakong – Stableford
This course may be a long drive but these days it is certainly worth taking the trouble. We had a full group to travel today and surprisingly most found the venue with no problems. I say most because there is always one and for some reason some Sat Navs seem to find a problem, however in the end all got there in time.
On arrival, not having been there for some time, we were really pleased to find brand new changing facilities, which made the start to the day really good.
As said we have not been there for some time and the course seems to have had a lot of work done on it, to the extent that I did not hear one complaint and only good things. This was always a fine layout, long and fair and if you played well you would get a good score. On this day it looked as well as we can ever remember and all aspects were great, especially the greens which were as good and true as any we have played for a long time.
The trip back always seems shorter when you have had a great day on the course and we were soon back at Bert’s where it was time to sort out the results and see who had played really well on this fine course.
In the A Flight, 0 to 20, the winner with the best score of the day was Brian Gabe with 43 points ahead of Landis Brooks in second with 39. We had a count back on 36 points that saw Brian Parish in third over Colin Mullen.
In the B Flight the winner was Graham Buckingham with 42 points ahead of Henry Wong in second with 39 points on count back over Paul Alford in third.

Smith takes the crown in Bunker championship

PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch

Bunker champion Paul Smith (centre) - “which way’s the hole?

Monday, Jan. 20, Crystal Bay B & A – Stableford
Today was our last game before the annual two-day Bunker Boy’s championship to be held on Wednesday and Friday, and twenty seven golfers turned out to fine tune their skills on what is generally considered to be one of the more forgiving courses on our regular schedule.
Once again the weather was cool and sunny with a stiff breeze blowing off the sea, which made club selection tricky on several holes. We were playing behind a large group of Scandanavian tourists and the outward nine was played at a snail’s pace, but fortunately the pace of play picked up a little on the inward nine.
As expected the scores were generally good and eight golfers played to their handicap or better, but what wasn’t expected was an outstanding performance from Gary Austin. Gary has seen has handicap go up by three shots following a string of disappointing performances over the last several weeks, but suddenly he re-found his form and came back to the clubhouse with a great score of 40 points, taking the overall win one shot clear of Keith Norman, who took the honours in the A Flight.
A Flight
1st Keith Norman (13) 39pts
2nd Ian Milne (15) 37pts
3rd Keichi Kasama (8) 36pts
B Flight
1st Gary Austin (19) 40pts
2nd Jack Robertson (27) 37pts
3rd Mashi Kaneta (16) 36pts

Wednesday, Jan. 22, Greenwood – Championship Medal Day 1
A field of 31 golfers turned up at the Ranch to contest the first day of the world famous Bunkerboys golf championship. The sun was shining and the temperature was perfect for a good walk to be spoilt by golf.
After check-in with several golfers sporting the new championship shirt, we loaded up for the long drive up the 331, that is everyone except for Michael Brett, who had accidentally been left behind by a driver who shall not be named, oh go on then it was Rab. Fortuitously the last vehicle was just departing so he frantically flagged it down and surprisingly it had room for himself and clubs.
50 minutes later we were at the course, which was quiet except for another society, but with 3 nines (A and B designated for Bunkerboys) this wasn’t a problem and we teed off around 10 minutes ahead of schedule.
Fairways were dry and hard, which is fairly normal for this time of year unless the course has access to large quantities of water. Greens were a bit variable speed wise but generally fast and gave a lot of golfers great difficulty, regularly disappearing off the back. A strong gusty wind added to the problems, why is it that it always seems to change direction and be straight into your face?
Due to the competition, the four-balls played together according to handicap with the supposedly better players teeing off first. This format worked well and the whole field moved along at a good pace with no holdups - very pleasant after recent rounds.
Overall a good number of the golfers struggled on the day to master the course/conditions with only 3 golfers hitting to handicap or better. Best score on the board belonged to Paul Smith, playing off 4 and carding a very good net 68. Following closely behind with a net 69 was Raleigh Gosney, who could have been in the lead but triple bogied the last after going OB. In third place for the championship, Richard Baldotto netted 72 with Barry Murnin a shot behind with a 73.
A Flight
1st Paul Smith (4) net 68
2nd Barry Murnin (17) net 73
3rd Peter Kelly (13) net 74
4th Mark Stanley (10) net 74

Friday, Jan. 24, Bangpra - Championship Medal Day 2
33 golfers congregated in the Ranch ready to do battle over the fairways of Bangpra on day 2 to win the coveted Bunkerboys championship. Alongside this competition everybody was also in contention over a stableford tournament to add interest for those golfers who had not quite played up to their expectations on day 1.
The championship leaders were out first on a bright and slightly breezy day, conditions were dry underfoot with the greens playing marginally slower than their normal fast speeds. The scene was set with around half a dozen golfers realistically in contention, needing to play very well on this difficult course to overhaul the current leader and odds on favourite, Paul Smith.
The course is always busy but the leading group teed off slightly ahead of schedule. First drama of the day unfolded on the par 3 second hole where Ian Milne topped his ball into the water. He spotted his prized possession close to the edge, and in his attempt at retrieval did his best impression at trialling for the Sochi Olympics inverted toboggan team. The black plastic water trap liner was slick but fortunately Ian managed to avoid the fate of his ball by inches but was unable to scramble his way out.
In the meantime his playing companions had reached the green and were unaware of his predicament, until they eventually spotted him and with the aid of a club, he was saved to continue his round.
Up ahead Paul Smith was playing steady golf and nobody was managing to get within a couple of shots to mount a serious challenge. Closest of the bunch was Raleigh Gosney who trailed Paul by 1 shot at the start of play but his 2 over par for the day couldn’t quite match Paul’s par score.
The stableford competition produced some very respectable scores with Ian Milne shrugging off his near soaking and carding 38 pts to take A flight. In B flight Eddie Kelly just edged out Geoff Hart on count back with championship runner-up Raleigh Gosney and Michael Brett making up the podium.
In the championship sub categories, Peter Hapgood again ran away with the “golf club releasing specialist” title, although his career seems to be on the wane with diminishing distances over previous years. The inaugural “most colour coordinated golfer” division belonged to a very orange Colin Greig although he vehemently denied he had matching underwear. This could not be verified as the judges refused to inspect the evidence.
Overall Championship
1st Paul Smith (4) net 140
2nd Raleigh Gosney (20) net 143
3rd Ian Milne (15) net 145

Pleasant Valley was the game today and we got off the first tee on time under very sunny skies and a light breeze, which turned into a gale by the time we got to the first par 3.
The course was in fine condition with fast greens and we took 4 hours and 40 minutes to get around, with a six-ball in carts hampering our progress in front.
Two flights today with the cut at handicap and Tore Eliassen won the A Flight with 36 points ahead of Jan Ulriksen who took second on count back over Jan Lovgreen, both on 35 points. Andre van Dyk took fourth spot with 33.

The course was in fine shape with the fastest greens around. The new clubhouse is progressing well with furniture now in the restaurant area and it is slated to open in mid February.
We wizzed around today in just 4 hours and 10 minutes, not catching up to anyone until the 17th hole.
Leif Kirkgaard won the A Flight with 37 points, six ahead of Michele Sancillo in second while Richard Kubicki claimed third on a count back over Niels Hansen.
Jan Lovgreen took B Flight honours with 36 points while Dave Richardson was second on 32 and Jack Robertson and Peter Hammond completed the podium.

Sunday’s winners: Nick Hanscome, JJ Harney and John Carlton.

President’s Day was the event today and the popularity was shown by the 82 players who signed up to play. The incoming president, Irishman Jimmy Day welcomed every one while the conditions out on the course made it a pleasure to play with a very cooling wind.
Co. Waterford man JJ Harney proved the man to beat as he took the senior flight with an outstanding 42 points. JJ was three clear of flight mate Nick Handsome while Andy Kelleher’s even par round took the third flight spot. A trio of players were knotted on 33 points; Aussie stars Bob Watson, Paul Bray and Peter ‘the right honourable’ LeNoury but Bob filled the extra podium spot courtesy of a more favourable back nine.
John Carlton continued his good form with a solid 39pts to stand atop the B Flight podium. Barry ‘the boot’ Copestake continued his relentless assault on the pay window as Alex Tregurtha and Laurie McBride were strung out in one shot increments, Laurie gaining the fourth place via a count back win over the unlucky pair of Jim ‘AK47’ Bell and Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan.
Brian ‘the wireless’ Wilkinson was bang on form both on and off the course as he had a C Flight winning 39 points. Colm Mullen flew the flag for Ireland as he accepted the flight silver with a rock solid38 points; Colm was a stoke clear of Claude Harder and a further shot clear of Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby.
Mick Coughlan had the best of a very competitive D Flight with a steady even to par round to put him two clear of Barry Oats. The minor flight places went to count back as both John Hartigan and Christian Boysen tied on 33 points but as always the luck of the Irish prevailed.
There were eleven 2’s on the day.
Congratulations to JJ Harney for his fine win and to everyone for taking part. A special thanks to the Lewiinski’s staff for the wonderful food and service.
Jimmy ended the night thanking every one with a speech that brought a tear to many an eye. Well done Jimmy - we are indeed lucky to have such a nice and wonderful person at the head of the society.

B Flight
1st Bobby Collis (18) 41pts
2nd Aiden Murray (24) 38pts
3rd Bruce Walters (31) 37pts
The story of the day was Bobby Collis and his excellent 41 points which topped his playing mate Aiden Murray by three shots. Aussie Bruce ‘waltzing matilda’ Walter’s fine 33 points was good for the third spot.
The always impressive Eric Gobert was the top man in the accomplished flight with a rock solid 38 points. Eric was three clear of Bert Ulrich as Mike Allidi rounded out the flight.
Tuesday, Jan. 21, Bangpra - Stabelford
A Flight
1st Thierry Petrement (12) 34pts
2nd Paul Bray (7) 33pts
3rd Andy Kellaher (9) 30pts
B Flight
1st Peter Kelly (13) 33pts
2nd Peter Henshaw (16) 32pts
3rd Pat Hanafin (20) 31pts
C Flight
1st Mike Jeffreys (17) 34pts
2nd John Hartigan (22) 34pts
3rd Brian Wilkinson (14) 34pts
It’s not unusual that the field was challenged by Bangpra and that no one matched their handicap - the wind was blowing and that made a tough course tougher.
Thierry Petrement was the main benefactor in A Flight with a top equaling score of 34 points. Aussie star Paul Bray was a stroke back of Thierry and that left Andy Kellaher and Bert Ulrich tied on 30 points for the bronze; Andy’s luck held up leaving Bert with no step to stand on.
Peter Kelly took the Irish interim flight with his 33 points. Peter the silver surfer took the silver a shot in arrears, with Pat Hanafin closing the flight a further shot back.
Four players were log-jammed on 34 points in C Flight and the resulting count back allotted Mike ‘the welsh wizard’ Jeffreys the gold, John Hartigan the silver and Brian ‘the wireless’ Wilkinson the bronze. Brian doesn’t seem to have much luck in count backs but it was better than Frank McKenzie who had one of the best scores of the day for nothing.
Nick Odnoral, Mike Jeffreys and Eric Gobert shared the rollover 2’s pot.
Wednesday, Jan. 22, St. Andrews - Stableford
A Flight
1st Reg McKay (14) 39pts
2nd Paul Bray (7) 37pts

3rd John Carlton (15) 33pts
C Flight
1st Tip Briney (25) 35pts
2nd Frank McKenzie (19) 34pts
3rd Colm O’Donovan (19) 31pts
St Andrews was the host to Lewiinski’s today so it was only fitting and correct that a Scotsman should stand atop the A Flight podium with the top score of the day - Reg ‘Buckie boot boy’ McKay with a cracking 39 points. Reg was trailed in by Aussie star Paul Bray two shots adrift and a further two strokes back was pay window specialist Andy Kellaher.
Adrian Vandenberg was the top man in B Flight with a very creditable 37 points that left a modest dogfight for second between Jan Roger Ulriksen and John Carlton, the former winning the math.
A tight finish in C Flight saw Tip Briney on 35 points edge Frank McKenzie by a single stroke as Colm O’Donovan closed the flight via a count back victory over Denmark’s unlucky Christian Boysen.
Tip Briney and Tore Eliaseen split the ‘2’s pot.
Thursday, Jan. 23, Mt. Shadow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Paraic McManus (5) 35pts
2nd Andy Kellaher (9) 34pts
3rd Andre Coetzie (6) 33pts
B Flight
1st David Dune (19) 36pts
2nd Billy Briton (16) 34pts
3rd Bruce Berlin (24) 32pts
Another welcome visit to Mountain Shadow saw a fair crowd hit the road and a few mango trees by the look of the scores!
Top man of the day was B Flight’s David Dune with his even par round. David was two clear of Irish leg-end Billy Britton while Bruce Berlin snuck by Jorn Finnerup in a count back to close the flight and leave Jorn scratching his head - but he did have a ‘2’ as a bit of a consolation.
A Flight succumbed to the tough layout and lighting fast greens as Paraic McManus took top spot with 35 points, but was pressed all the way by Andy Kellaher and Andre Coetzie who were strung out in single digit increments.
Pat Hanafin, Toru Inone and Gerard Besslee shared the 2’s pot with Jorn.
Friday, Jan. 24, Silky Oak - Stableford
A Flight
1st Peter Hynard (13) 39pts

3rd Bob Watson (2) 34pts
B Flight
1st Reg McKay (14) 40pts
2nd Maurice Roberts (15) 34pts
3rd Ajit Amin (17) 33pts
C Flight
1st David Dunne (19) 36pts
2nd Peter McCann (18) 36pts
3rd Gerry Roche (19) 33pts
Every player has a purple day when things go right and the challenging game suddenly seems easier. Usually the next outing disproves that but one is still left with the motivation that having had such a good game the ability is there to move forward.
This was not the case with today’s top man Buckie boy Reg McKay as he made it two wins on the trot with a blistering 40 points in B Flight. Reg was six clear of fellow B Flight player Maurice Roberts as Ajit Amin closed the flight a shot back.
David Dunne continued his steady play as he made it his second pay day this week with a count back win over Peter McCann, both tied on even par rounds. Irishman Gerry Roche filled the bronze spot on 33pts.
In A Flight, with the cut at 13 and under, it was Peter Hynard who occupied the top spot with an excellent 39 points. Peter was four clear of the man on fire Andy Kellaher who made it four pay window trips this week. Aussie super star Bob Watson picked up the bronze a shot adrift.
Peter McCann, Jim Bell and Paul Bray shared the ‘2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd Soi13/13 near Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

2 Stone’s encore

The Backyard Golf Society

It was ideal weather once again on Friday Jan. 24 for the weekly Backyard Golf Society game at Emerald. In contrast to the last few weeks there was very little wind at all and cool temperatures meant a very comfortable round.
The winner of the stableford competition again was Jimmy “2 Stone”. All this hullaballoo we hear about the best ball on the circuit is just bull-dust. Jimmy has shown once again that balls are not a big deal.
Near-pin this week went to that most accurate of golfers, “Diet Whiskey” Dan. Chances are he got a favourable bounce off a few trees and a roving dog on the way to the green but it is not how, but how close.
The skins proved to be a big winner for Kit “the Pom”. With the 4 groups out today (and “The Quiet Man” providing some invaluable (?) tips to the last group), the first 11 holes were draws so Kit’s par on the 12th was enough to win those 12 skins and the 1 rollover from the previous week. The other skins were won by Jimmy “2 Stone” and “Diet Whiskey” Dan with 3 apiece.
We saw the return yet again of Linda’s Lovelace who is getting in a few extra rounds before the boss turns up. The Biss also made a return from darkest Africa so we should have a good turn-out for the next month or so.

Now that all the three nines have been renovated this outstanding course is a pleasure, whichever ones are in play, but it is still a stern test of golf with the course designed to trap the unwary and the foolhardy. For once the course did not exact too much havoc amongst the field and the CSS for the day remained at 72, but with only one player managing to better par it showed it still needed respect.
Markku Tynell led in the field with a splendid one under handicap return which included a four-pointer on the difficult seventh on the B course after dropping in a single putt.
Alan Hanlon led in a trio on one over with a better 19 in the count back, with Shuichi Kodaka claiming third on 17 and Mike Dabanovich fourth with 16.
David Lowe made it a happy return to Pattaya golf with a ‘2’ and fifth place, just a couple behind.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Alan Hanlon and David Lowe had one each in the first division to share the roll over pool.
Wednesday, Jan. 22, Green Valley - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Philip Cass (20) 37pts
2nd Don Everett (19) 37pts
3rd Patrick Scullion (21) 34pts
4th Mike Hill (21) 34pts
5th Terry Hodgkiss (25) 33pts
6th Shuichi Kodaka (18) 33pts

Markku Tynell.

At last a return to Green Valley after a long hiatus, being unable to reserve tee bookings at reasonable times, due no doubt to the many touring groups that now seem to spend months in the course accommodation.
The increase in high season throughput may well be the reason for the introduction of 6 minute tee times for a group of four, but after clearing the tees in the allotted times at that rate the course was found to be chock-a-block, as it would appear to be impossible to complete a round at the same pace. The outcome was a five hour round even with the first group following and waiting every hole for a two-ball immediately ahead.
Aside from that the course was in excellent condition as the scoring attested, so most of the players left fairly pleased with their day’s golf if a little weary.
Philip Cass failed to get a ‘2’ on this occasion but did enough on the back nine to win a count back over Don Everett, carding a better 21 to 16, to win and leave Don ruing the missed opportunity on the seventeenth. There was also a count back for third with Patrick Scullion prevailing over Mike Hill by a margin of 17 to 14 as Terry Hodgkiss won the third count back of the day to deny Shuichi Kodaka with a 13 to 9 score on the last six after they had tied the nine at 17 apiece.
Kevin Blake slipped in the sole 2 in the first division whilst Philip Cass added to his day’s haul with the only one in the second division which cleaned out the multi roll over pot.
Friday, Jan. 24, Pattavia - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st John Carlin (16) 33pts
2nd Mark Armstrong (25) 33pts
3rd Allen Raaen (8) 32pts
4th Alan Hanlon (13) 31pts
5th Patrick Scullion (21) 31pts
6th Graham Howard (27) 31pts

Philip Cass.

Another visit to the renamed and renovated Century Chonburi where work on the new clubhouse continues at a fair pace and which should see it finished in the very near future. In the meantime the course has been improved beyond all recognition and with a total cost that was 750 baht cheaper for a cart rider than the previous competition played, it will certainly be featuring regularly on the schedule during the months to come.
John Carlin took another win following his increase in handicap, albeit at three over par and after having to win a count back, which he did, with a better 7 over the last three as Mark Armstrong could garner just the standard 6 points after they had tied the nine at 17 each, and the back six at 10, and so he had to settle for second place.
Allen Raaen took third just a point behind after turning in a very uncharacteristic card that contained too many zeros.
Alan Hanlon won a three-way count back for fourth, finishing with 19 after a very slow start, and Patrick Scullion ended up with 15 for fifth place while Graham Howard took his first podium of the holiday despite severe gout problems, managing to complete the back nine with 14 points.
There were no 2’s in the first division but very surprisingly there were two in the second division with Philip Cass, as usual and Markku Tynell getting one each.
Note. If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile 094 567 5726 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Flynn gets it together at Bangpakong

The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

On Monday, 20th January the Pattaya Golf Society visited the sumptuous Bangpakong Riverside course to play a stableford competition. A comfortable cool breeze blew all day keeping the golfers at their ease and the two flights were separated at fifteen and under.

PGS Champion 2014, Chris Smith gets his hands on the trophy at last.

As usual scores at Bangpakong were good with the second flight seeing the Canadian duo of Henry Mah and Rod Stevens share runner-up place with 35 points each whilst the Aussie golfer Murray Edwards took the flight with 36 points.
In the top flight Wichai Tananusorn’s 37 points took third place, just one point behind second placed Dave Moriarty on 38. An impressive round of 39 points saw Kiwi Alan Flynn post the best points total of the day for the victory.
The recently crowned PGS Champion, Chris Smith again impressed with the best gross of the day, 74 shots and Dave Moriarty and Richard Dobson shared the ‘2’s pot with birdies on the seventh hole.
The presentation saw John Tallett receive the Booby Bevy for a nil return and a belated presentation was made to Chris Smith.
It’s an ill wind...
On Wednesday, 22nd January the first tee at Mountain Shadow was a very uncomfortable location for the Pattaya Golf Society as the large field gathered for a stableford competition. A very strong, cold wind was blowing and set to continue all day and in the view of many older heads conditions were as uncomfortable as they had ever been in the province. In addition greens were at racing speed and the pins were placed on any slope that was available!
Cold, shivering and stiff golfers set off from the blue tees and no apologies were made for the society’s lowest ever average competition score, a meagre 22 points. With the cut at fourteen and under the second flight saw Larry Ang and Paul Edgar share third place with 25 points, Martin Hennessy in second with 26 and John Chelo take the win with thirty points.
In the top flight Iain Wilson took third place with 30 points and had the dubious honour of setting the best gross figures of the day, 81 shots. In second place was Dave Moriarty with 32 points and the flight winner was Robbie Taylor with 35 points. Barely fifteen percent of the field had managed thirty points or more!
The ‘2’s pot was shared by Mike Earley, Wichai Tananusorn, John O’Sullivan and John Chelo and the Booby Bevy went to Richard Dobson for his worst ever score with only nine points! Back at Rabbi’s in Soi Buakhao the security man was considering throwing an extra log on the fire, all fans were off and hot toddies were the order of the day.
Stern test at
Treasure Hill
The Pattaya Golf Society ended its toughest week in many a month with a trip to Treasure Hill for a stableford competition on Friday, 24th January. Another large field found the course in fair condition with slightly sanded greens but the usual bare patches on the fairways.
With the cut at seventeen and under the second flight saw Murray Edwards and Larry Ang share second place with 31 points and Henry Mah making a very good fist of things with his winning score of 34 points.
In the top flight Ray Banks again dug in to produce 31 points for third place, one behind Iain Wilson, whose best gross of 79 strokes gave him 32 points for second. The winner was namesake Peter Wilson whose round of 34 points was an excellent achievement for a first shot at the course.
Ray Banks, Dave Edwards and Martin Hennessy shared the ‘2’s pot with fine efforts on the sixth and thirteenth holes whilst Richard Dobson took the Booby Bevy for the second successive round for his low score.
David Thomas had his first taste of stewardship in three years and conducted the group in his own inimitable style and once again Rabbi and Khun Peung excelled themselves with the hospitality back at the Elephant Bar in Soi Buakhao. Thus the week ended with almost a hundred PGS rounds being played and only three below-par rounds to brighten the cool and blustery conditions. Brrr... just like being back at home!

Horst & Pepo take team honours

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Monday, Jan. 20, Mt. Shadow – Stableford
Another extravaganza game courtesy of the rollover kitty with a normal stableford game for three divisions and an additional pairs stableford tournament.

Khalifa Nasser.

It was a coolish morning as we waited to tee off with 22 teams out in today’s game. Once underway, the difficulty of the pin placements and the speed of the greens started to take their toll and scores suffered accordingly.
Ron Miller, playing off 6, was the winner in division 1 with 34 points, beating Horst Starchl on a 16/15 back-nine count back and in third place was Max Alabor with 33.
Curtis Hessler topped division 2 with 29 points, with Bob Poole in second on 27 and Paul Butler pipped Eiichai Matsumoto 15/12 on count back for third after they both came in with 26 points each.
Meanwhile, William Chang won division 3 with 29 points and Pepo Frick beat Joe Kubon and Bruce Gardner on a 15/12/10 count back for second after all were tied on an ‘impressive’ 25 points each.
Near pins went to Max Alabor, Paul Butler, Ron Miller, Pete Sumner, William Chang, Curtis Hessler, Timo Kakkuri and Bob Poole.
There were five ‘2’s from Max Alabor, Ron Miller (2), Timo Kakkuri and Bob Poole.
Other technical prizes were won as follows: 2nd hole nearest the pin in two shots- Martin Grimoldby & Curtis Hessler; 6th hole nearest the pin in three shots - Ron Miller, Bryan Rought & Jim Connelly; 12th hole nearest the pin in two shots - Ron Miller, Don Head & Andy Oz; 14th hole nearest the pin in three shots - Neville Scurrell, Jerry McCarthy & Randy Flello; 18th hole longest drive - Ron Miller, Harry Vincenzi & Randy Flello.
In the overall team competition Horst Starchl and Pepo Frick won with 59 points, ahead of Paul Butler and William Chang in second place on 55 points and Lindsay Phillips and Curtis Hessler came third with 53.
Wednesday, Jan. 22, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
Another good turnout with 12 groups today and the cut set at 6-15, 16-20 and 21+ in division 3. It was slightly cooler today than on Monday, or shall we say colder, and there were a few players with wearing jackets and a couple with long trousers! If you read the newspaper reports it is 7 to 8 degrees below the normal for this time of the year here.

Ron Miller.

Playing off 31 and never ever recoding a score this high before, Magne Gunnarsson won division 3 with 38 points, beating Randy Flello on a 20/18 count back. Pepo Frick was third six points behind on 32.
Matti Pihlajisto was the winner in division 2 with 36 points while Volker Suhr took second with 35 and Bob Poole was third, beating Sulis 20/14 on the back nine after they both returned scores of 34.
Lindsay Phillips’ 34 points was enough to give him top podium position in division 1, with Nik Evans in second beating Terry Madsen 15/12 on the back nine after the both came in with 33 points.
In the ladies comp Hildur won with 33 points while Miss Nut was second with 32 after beating Verana Suhr on a back nine count back of 16/14.
Near pins were claimed by Terry Madsen, Ron Miller, Barney Sheedy, Pete Sumner, Randy Flello, John McGary, Bob Poole and Volker Suhr.
Randy Flello birdied the 12th and Sulis the 5th to split the ‘2’s pot in division 2 while in division 1 a rollover ensued to the following Monday.
Friday, Jan. 24, Eastern Star - Stableford
We had almost the same number of players as Wednesday so an identical cut in the three divisions today.

Pete Sumner.

Playing off 7, Pete Sumner recorded the best score of the day, winning division 1 with 39 points. Bill Bertram came in second with 36 points, taking 4 count backs to beat Gerald Dooley. Now living in Ban Chang, Kalifa Nasser was the winner in division 2 with 34 points ahead of Iain Walsh in second who beat Harry Vincenzi 17/14 on the back nine, both scoring 31 points each.
Finn Olsen topped the division 3 standings with 31 points. Matti Ylitalo took second with 29 and Joe Kubon beat Toi Blair on count back for third after they both shot 27’s.
Near pins went to Billy Fitzgerald, Pete Sumner, Chris Voller, Matti Pihlajisto and Sulis.
Sulis birdied the 13th for the only ‘2’ of the day and sole possession of the division 2 prize pot.
Today it was many happy returns for Chris Voller, but we are not mentioning his age!

McArdle bags back to back wins

IPGC golf from Tara Court Golf Group

Sunday, Jan 19,
St. Andrews - Stableford
Today we were moved over to St. Andrews from our usual spot on Green Valley and all our friends were very happy with the move. It is always nice to play St. Andrews, especially when you get it at Green Valley prices. As usual it was in beautiful condition with excellent fairways and very fast greens which caught out a lot of our golfers and was reflected in the scores.

Joe McArdle.

Despite a large group out no one managed to play to their handicap with the best score of the day being the 35pts posted by Michael Williams to win the B Flight, with Paddy Naughton coming second on 30 and John McGarry third with 29.
Joe McArdle topped the A Flight with 34pts, beating Declan Kelly into second on a count back, with Barney Sheedy in third place with 31.
Alec Hoare and Ger Lodge shared the 2’s pot with one apiece.

Tuesday, Jan. 21, Subphabruek - Stableford

Today we decided to take a trip up to Subphapruek Golf Club. It is a bit of a journey to get there, taking over an hour and a half in the mini buses but well worth it. Everything about it is absolutely beautiful, both the clubhouse and the course and not too expensive for what you are getting.
We played of the champion tees which was probably a bit long for a lot of our golfers and kept the scores down but everyone were delighted with it. There is also a lot of water on this course and with lightning fast greens that also meant that the scores were not great.
Joe McArdle won the A Flight with the best score of the day, 34pts, for his second win this week. Jon Batty was second with 31 after beating Peter Murphy into third on a count back.
Gilbert Brosnan claimed the B flight with 32pts while Jim Kelly was second with 31, beating Paddy Naughton into third on a count back.
The 2’s were shared between Peter Murphy, Barney Sheedy with one each and Gilbert Brosnan with two. This was Gilbert’s second game with us this year so a very profitable start to his holiday!
A Flight
1st Joe McArdle (13) 34pts
2nd Jon Batty (10) 31pts
3rd Peter Murphy (13) 31pts
B Flight
1st Gilbert Brosnan (21) 32pts
2nd Jim Kelly (21) 31pts
3rd Paddy Vaughn (18) 31pts
Thursday, Jan. 23, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
Back to one of our favorite courses to day, Mountain Shadow. A very large group out today and while it was a beautiful day for golf, not too hot, there was a fair bit of wind.
As Mountain Shadow is a very difficult course today we decided to give our friends a choice between the blue and white tees instead of A and B flights. As it happened about half of them decided to play off the blue and half off the white so it worked out very well.
As was to be expected the best score of the day came off the white tees with Jim Kelly winning it with 36pts. Ted Morris was second with 32, Sean Hallahan third on 29 and Mary Kelly had to settle for fourth place, being beaten on a count back by Sean.
Mary had the only2 of the day making it a very profitable day indeed for the Kelly family on their second game with us this year. Well done to both of you and a very badly needed few baht indeed!
Off the blue tees and coming near the end of his holiday for this year, Donal Lyne was the winner with 34pts and his first win this year. Barney Sheedy, who is a regular winner, was second with 33pts, with Joe Peters making a long overdue return to the podium with 32 in third and Joe McArdle taking the final podium spot in fourth with 31.
Blue Flight
1st Donal Lyne (17) 34pts
2nd Barney Sheedy (9) 33pts
3rd Joe Peters (23) 32pts
4th Joe McArdle (13) 31pts
White Flight
1st Jim Kelly (21) 36pts
2nd Ted Morris (11) 32pts
3rd Sean Hallahan (21) 29pts
4th Mary Kelly (25) 29pts
Note: The Tara Court Golf Group play every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, leaving O’Gara’s Bar and Restaurant in the Tara Court on Pratamnak Rd. around 10.00 a.m. Sign up either in O’Gara’s or call Joe on 089 249 1364 and he will book you in.

The Eyles have it

PSC golf from The Golf Club

Steve Ellison
Monday, Jan. 20, Green Valley (white tees) – Monthly Medal
1st Geoff Doody (26) 37pts
T2nd Sonny Crawford (9) 36pts
T2nd Chuck Anderson (9) 36pts
3rd Adrian Vandenbruek (15) 35pts
36 golfers went to our Monday venue of the fabulous Green Valley and were greeted with perfect golfing weather once again. The course is super-busy these days as 20% of the population of Korea is here. So much for everyone cancelling their flights because of the Bangkok demonstrations!

‘Wild’ Bill Eyles relaxes al fresco back at The Golf Club.

We have our good buddy Sonny Crawford back in town and staying and playing with us for the next few weeks. Sonny plays off 9 and today shot his handicap, and coincidentally Chuck Anderson who also plays off 9 also shot the same score, so an ultimate tie for 2nd for the single digit lads.
Adrian Vandenbruek took third spot on the podium, but first place went to one of our higher handicappers who plays with us just about every Monday and is off 26! Congrats to our stalwart Geoff Doody who came good on the day and got his timing right for the victory. We don’t get to see much of Geoff and Cathy as they are on the Darkside, but appreciate their support and participation. Wish I had a photo for you!
Wednesday, Jan. 22, Treasure Hill (white tees) – Stableford
1st Bill Eyles (24) 33pts
T2nd Phil Smedley (12) 30pts
T2nd Peter Wilson (8) 30pts
This is one of the tougher golf courses in the area, and playing to 6,400 yards makes scoring well here very difficult. As you will see, nobody could shoot better than a 33 and when you also throw in the windy conditions on this narrow track it does make for a frustrating day.

Sonny Crawford.

Nevertheless, a good time was had by all but as our Golf Captain said, “it was a hard day at the office”. Condition of the golf course was pretty good all round and once again the high season weather was just ideal. Management are continuing with the improvements at this Saha Group facility and it is being groomed to a wonderful condition for the summer to come.
We had a tie for 2nd place today with Peter Wilson shooting the same as our trusty Captain, Phil Smedley who were both on 30 points. The “Winner Winner Chicken Dinner” (as Brad would say) award went to none other than ‘Wild’ Bill Eyles with 33 points on the card. Glad to see Billy playing well and turning in some winning scores these days!
Friday, Jan. 24, Mt. Shadow (blue tees) – Stableford
1st Peter Rogers (21) 35pts
2nd Bill Eyles (24) 31pts
3rd Ken Aihara (3) 30pts
This place needs water! The course is now dry as a bone so if you like tight lies then this is the golf course for you. Sure, you get a decent run on the ball, but the already difficult greens have now become just treacherous. This is such a great layout though I would still recommend you play here, and at a high season rate of 850 baht green fee it is such good value for us.
Peter Rogers had no trouble at all here, so yes, it can be done! Peter had a great day with 35 points and blew away the field as the next down the ladder was Wild Bill Eyles on 31. Kenny Aihara was shocked to find himself in the frame on a card with only 30 points on it, and Ken was in for a surprising third place. Ya just never know with this game!
Thanks once again to all who joined us in this golfer’s paradise called Pattaya.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We try to schedule summer “Sports Days”, so come join us for a seriously fun day out. Monday, Jan. 20,
Treasure Hill - Stableford
On Monday the TRGG headed off to Treasure Hill and for Brendon McEvoy it was not only the perfect weather that got his week up and running, it was the 39pts he collected on a very tricky golf course to storm away from the rest of the field and easily win the day’s competition. Neil Bramley and Derek Thorogood fought it out for second and third, with Neil winning on count back.

Kehn Brehm.

1st Brendon McEvoy (17) 39pts
2nd Neil Bramley (10) 36pts
3rd Derek Thorogood (16) 36pts
Tuesday, Jan. 21,
Green Valley - Stableford
On Tuesday Green Valley provided the venue and increased numbers meant two divisions were necessary.
For the second day running it was the Irish contingent who found the conditions to their liking and in Division 1 Liam Keegan walked away with top prize, closely followed by those two other steady stalwarts, Mike Rushant and Barry Wood.
In Division 2 Peter Cahill did the business and beat off challenges from Ken Brehm and David Callick.
Div.1 (0-15)
1st Liam Keegan (15) 36pts
2nd Mike Rushant (11) 35pts
3rd Barry Wood (12) 34pts
Div.2 (16+)
1st Peter Cahill (19) 34pts
2nd Ken Brehm (19) 32pts
3rd David Callick (18) 32pts
Thursday, Jan. 23,
The Emerald - Stableford
Thursday and it was off to the favourite course for many of our golfers, Emerald, and just when you might think the Irish guys would be feeling right at home it was the Americans/Canadians who won the day.
In Division 1, Alan Thomas, a guy I really enjoy watching who makes the game of golf look so easy, came to the fore and defeated another of his countrymen Larry Simpson, but only on count back. Scotsman Jim Cooper took third spot.
In Division 2 it was my old adversary Ken Brehm, another from across the pond, who rattled up the biggest score of the week of 40pts and a cut of two shots to his handicap. Next time I do battle with him I may now have more of a chance. Yet another American, John Baxter, was second and antipodean Derek Thorogood was third.
Div.1 (0-14)
1st Alan Thomas (5) 34pts
2nd Larry Simpson (10) 34pts
3rd Jim Cooper (13) 32pts
Div.2 (15+)
1st Ken Brehm (19) 40pts
2nd John Baxter (15) 36pts
3rd Derek Thorogood (16) 34pts
Saturday, Jan. 25,
Eastern Star - Stableford
On Saturday it was back to Eastern Star and the Irish contingent finished off the week the same way they started it, on top. This time it was an Irish lady who showed it wasn’t only the men-folk who could win a golf competition. Joan Murphy got her penny whistle out and led all the guys home, well done Joan.
1st Joan Murphy (20) 35pts
2nd Liam Keegan (15) 34pts
3rd Rod Ewan (14) 33pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to play a round of golf with the TRGG, please phone Fergus Brennan on 086 056 7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.

Lisicki survives opening round scare at PTT Pattaya Open, finals this weekend

Sabine Lisicki had her supporters on the edge of their seats on Monday as she struggled to overcome a gallant challenge from Croatia’s Donna Vekic before reaching the second round of the PTT Pattaya Open women’s tennis tournament. In the end she came through 7-5 2-6 6-4 in a match lasting a shade over two hours.

Sabine Lisicki struggled through her opening match against Donna Vekic.

The problem was her right shoulder which started to hurt during the match and became more problematic as the contest wore on.
“It (the injury) happened during the match and as it went on it got worse and worse,” said the top-seeded German. “It was really, really tough to serve at all, but I played the finals here last year and have good memories so I really wanted to keep on playing and finish the match and not to lose in the first round. I love to play here and I love being in Thailand so I definitely wanted to win that match.”
Lisicki, a beaten finalist in 2013 to Maria Kirilenko, appeared to be struggling right from the start and dropped her serve in the opening game. The German came back to level at 2-2, but Vekic then broke again to lead 5-3 and served for the set at 5-4 before Lisicki turned the set around, winning three games in succession.

Donna Vekic, Vera Zvonareva and Sorana Cirstea pose with Thai Tennis Association officials and local public dignitaries during the draw for this year’s tournament at the Dusit Thani Pattaya resort, Sunday, Jan. 26.

With Lisicki’s injury problems becoming more pronounced, Vekic took advantage and went on to capture the second set easily as her opponent struggled with her service. After an exchange of breaks early in the final set Lisicki broke again to lead 5-3, failed to serve out the match but then broke serve again to claim victory.
In other matches on Monday, second seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated China’s Zhang Shuai 6-0, 7-6 (3) and Chinese eighth seed Peng Shuai overcame Austrian Patricia Mayr-Achleitner 6-1, 7-6 (1). The only notable scalp on the opening day of first round matches was the defeat of seventh seed Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States 6-2, 6-4 by Czech Karolina Pliskova.
A press conference was held at the Dusit Thani venue last Sunday to present some of the stars playing in this year’s event and also to perform the main draw for the tournament. Croatia’s Donna Vekic, former two-time winner Vera Zvonareva of Russia and Romania’s Sorana Cirstea were present to help tournament organizer Geoffrey Rowe of Pentangle Promotions and Thai Tennis Association officials complete the draw.

Rodionova takes on Kleybanova in one of Sunday’s qualifying matches.

This weekend will see the conclusion of the tournament with the quarter-finals taking place on Friday (15.00), semi finals on Saturday (16.00) and the singles and doubles finals on Sunday (16.00). Tickets are on sale at 300, 500, 800 and 1,200 baht and can be purchased at the Dusit Thani Pattaya Resort.
For more information and up to date tournament information, contact the tournament office on site at the Dusit Thani Hotel, Pattaya or go to website: www. pentanglepromotions.com. Tickets can also be purchased through Thaiticketmajor on 02 262 3456 or website www.thaiticketmajor.com.

Last ball win sees PCC bring home plate final trophy

The victorious Pattaya Cricket Club team.

Pattaya Cricket Club, affiliated with Pattaya Sports Club, returned home from Bangkok with the Plate trophy in the kit bag after a thrilling final last weekend.
PCC played Lanna Cricket Club from Chiang Mai in the final of the Plate competition on Sunday and having lost the toss were asked to bat. PCC’s man of the tournament Dave Callick maintained his outstanding form with bat and hit a blistering 33no before retirement. He was ably supported by John G who carried his bat for 24no and the team set LCC a challenging 71 runs.
Booby Young, looking sick with fright at the prospect of opening the bowling, conceded 17 runs but removed the opener with a well flighted yorker. Dave C and Andy Emery pulled the game slightly back in favour of PCC but an over of 15 runs from captain Simon Philbrook left LCC needing only 11 from the last over to be bowled by Johnnie G to win.
When Shaun Jones held an excellent tumbling catch off the first ball PCC were favourites but the second ball was then dispatched for a maximum, putting LCC in the box seat and leaving just 5 required from 4 balls. Two singles and a dot ball meant 3 to win or 2 for a tie.
When the batsman launched the final delivery skywards it looked like LCC had won but Andy had other ideas as he moved stealthily to his left, steadied himself and plucked the ball out of air. The packed stand behind Andy all leapt to their feet and the PCC players celebrated wildly at the realisation of the win. Booby nearly threw up again with excitement or relief, we are not sure.
It was the climax to a fantastic weekend of cricket, hosted by the Southerners CC and held at two venues, the Thai Cricket Ground and Harrow International School. With 4 wins, a tie and only one loss (in the group stage against Southerners Gold) PCC can hold their heads high with all six players contributing.
PCC would like to thank the Pattaya Sports Club for their invaluable support and would like anyone interested in playing, supporting or officiating to visit our website at www.pattayacricketclub.com  and get in touch.
