Pattaya Sports Club Fishing News
November saw the start of what most of us regard as “the
season” for fishing, with sunny skies and mostly calm seas rather than the
rain and winds of recent months.
So demand for our trips has picked up, and in response to this the Pattaya
Sports Club laid on an extra unscheduled outing on Thursday 14th, most of
the participants being the “Banchang crowd”.
The entire day was spent drifting to the south and west of Ko Khram, with
startlingly mixed results, as some of us were rewarded for our efforts with
a mere couple of kilos of Pla Daeng and Snapper whilst Jason in particular
hardly stopped reeling them in all day and went home with more than 15 kilos
of assorted species, although even he didn’t catch any really large fish.
A couple of days later on Saturday 16th some of the seven guys who went out
from Sattahip had a great day, with Murray claiming bragger’s rights with
the fine Pompano, which he said “fought like a freight train”. He also had
several good-size grouper, and Dene reported also landing several nice fish.
Our December schedule (so far) is Saturday 7th, Thursday 12th, Saturday 21st
and a date to be notified after Christmas. For further details and bookings
visit www.pattayasports .org/ or phone John O’Neill on 085 391 7045

Kevin ‘Roy’ Rogers pulls the trigger
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Tom ’46-point’ Gorey.
Sunday, Nov. 24, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Kevin Rogers (11) 45pts
2nd Peter LeNoury (10) 41pts
3rd Yui Bietry (12) 40pts
B Flight
1st Jum Karagit (19) 37pts
2nd Sureth Metsa (16) 35pts
3rd Eddy Beilby (18) 35pts
Near Pins: No 4 Dave Driscoll No 9 Julias January No 12 Bob Newell No
16 Yui Bietry
Like the true gunslinger he is, Kevin ‘Roy’ Rogers won A Flight and then
left town. Well the circumstances were not all that suspicious as Kevin was
returning to Oz to that demon called work but he will be back in a couple of
weeks. Kevin did let the society know that the last time he returned a score
this good was twenty years ago.
Kevin’s best on the day 45 points edged second place finisher JP Gasser by
four points. Broadmore Bob put together a hard worked 40 points off his
stingy 6 handicap for the bronze; Bob took it all in his stride though as he
also collected a converted near pin.
The belle of the bar Jum Karagit claimed the top podium spot in B Flight
with a very creditable 37 points. Jum was two clear of a trio of players
Sureth Metsa, Eddy Beilby and ‘the Donkey’. Sureth followed Jum up the
podium steps with Eddy ‘the Eagle’ close behind. There was no podium spot
for ‘the Donkey’ much to the amusement of the presentation crowd.
Kevin Rogers, Peter LeNoury, Chaten Patel and Julias January shared the 2’s
pot with Bob Newell.
Sunday winners - Kevin Rogers and
Jum Karagit.
Monday, Nov. 25, Khao Kheow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Colin Smith (9) 35pts
2nd John Lagdon (5) 35pts
3rd Lindsay Semple 34pts
B Flight
1st Gerry Cooney (18) 38pts
2nd Reg McKay (17) 37pts
3rd Liam McGuiness (18) 33pts
C Flight
1st Tom Gorey (19) 34pts
2nd Christy Knight (20) 31pts
3rd Brian (Kent) Cooper (25) 31pts
A Flight had the bragging rights on Sunday but B Flight stole them on this
day and the man they sent to do it was Irishman Gerry Cooney as he nailed a
splendid 39 points. Gerry and flight runner-up, Scotland’s Buckie boy Reg
McKay, were the only two players to better their handicaps on the day. The
flight was closed by Ireland’s Lim McGuiness on 33 points.
In A Flight it was hard luck to John Lagdon as his 35 points only provided
him with the second flight spot thanks to a count back loss to Colin Smith
as he took the top position. Aussie Lindsay Semple nicked the bronze from
Co. Offaly gang member Kevin ‘you know who’, both a shot in arrears.
It was a good day for the ‘Micks’ in C Flight as County Wexford man Tom
Gorey took the top spot on the podium with a steady 34 points. Co. Dublin’s
best dressed golfer Christy ‘good’ Knight and Brian ‘mini’ Cooper knotted it
up for second and third with Christy enjoying the bigger count back pay day.
Lindsay Semple, Kevin McEntee, Andrew Byrne and Liam McGuiness shared the
2’s pot.
Tuesday, Nov. 26, Burapha C & D - Stableford
A Flight
1st JP Gasser (12) 41pts
2nd Paul Robinson (13) 35pts
3rd Bruce Anderson (9) 34pts
B Flight
1st Walter Baechli (17) 39pts
2nd Lindsay Semple (15) 36pts
3rd Terry Mangan (15) 35pts
C Flight
1st John Knight (22) 38pts
2nd Mike Jeffreys (18) 35pts
3rd Jim Elphick (23) 33pts
It was back to Burapha where once again the unlikely pairing of Crystal
Spring and Dunes was the task at hand.
JP Gasser showed that girth wasn’t a requirement as he used his supple power
and innate talent to take the day’s honours with a best on the day 41
points. Paul Robinson took the A Flight silver with 35 points and the
balance of the podium was filled by a fellow that had 34 points but which
one? The numbers went favorably for Bruce Anderson as the Co. Offaly gang
man returned to the hide out potless.
Walter ‘meet me at the altar’ Baechli made a rare appearance with the
society and made it a worthwhile one as his 39 points took the gold in the B
Flight. Walter was three clear of Aussie star Lindsay Semple while Terry
‘pork chop’ Mangan closed the flight a further shot adrift.
John Knight made a quick visit to the pay window in the junior flight with a
splendid 38 points as he bettered Mike ‘the welsh wizard’ Jeffreys by three.
Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick closed the flight on 33 points.
Paul Robinson a brace shared the 2’s pot with Bruce Anderson, Andy Byrne,
Chris Martin and Ian Pickles.
Wednesday, Nov. 27, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Bob Newell (6) 39pts
2nd Ed Wyckoff (12) 38pts
3rd Sugar Robertson (11) 38pts
B Flight
1st Eddy Beilby (18) 40pts
2nd Reg McKay (17) 38pts
3rd Bruce Walters (16) 32pts
Today we returned to our adopted home course Green Valley. Eddy ‘the Eagle’
Beilby was man of the match with his rousing 40 points and top man in B
Flight, but he needed every one of them as Broadmore Bob took the honours in
A Flight with 39 points.
Ed ‘our man in the White house’ Wyckoff and Scotland’s Buckie boy Sugar
Robertson both returned fine 38 points but Ed’s course knowledge and the
fact that he is resident here in Pattaya help sway the count back in his
favour.
Sugar’s close friend Buckie boy Reg McKay followed ‘the Eagle’ up the B
Flight podium steps with a solid 38 points and Aussie Bruce Walters needed
the aid of a count back to claim the bronze, leaving Liverpool’s Ray ‘hub
cap’ Fowlis out in the cold and penniless.
Pat Regan a brace, Peter LeNoury and Eddy Beilby shared the 2’s pot.
Thursday, Nov. 28, Crystal Bay - Stableford
A Flight
1st Thierry Petrement (14) 43pts
2nd JP Gasser (12) 40pts
3rd Kris Kay (7) 37pts
B Flight
1st Tom Gorey (I9) 46pts
2nd Merle Humphreys (18) 38pts
3rd Christy Knight (20) 38pts
Well there it is – a score that would normally raise the heckles of a
skeptical Pattaya golf crowd but which in this case received a
congratulatory round of applause. Tom’s magnificent 46 points was the top in
B Flight and the best score on the day. Had Tom managed one more point he
could have had Jim Bell;s moniker ‘AK 47’.
Golfing luminaries Merle Humphreys and fellow ‘Mick’ Christy ‘good’ Knight
followed Tom up the podium steps, albeit from a distance but they were the
first to admit that the loot spends just the same.
A word about the rest of the society starts with A Flight winner Thierry
Petrement, who has been seen at the pay window constantly of late but had
not made a handicap move. That changed today with Thierry’s exemplary 43
points. JP Gasser managed a 40-pointer but sadly it was good only for the
silver. Thailand’s Kris Kay rounded out the flight with a solid 37 points.
Thierry Petrement, Chris Martin, Ed Wyckoff, Francis Goyons, Tom Gorey and
Jum Karagit shared the 2,s pot.
Friday, Nov. 29,
Silky Oak - Stableford
A Flight
1stBruce Andrews (9) 38pts
2nd Peter Hynard (12) 37pts
3rd Kevin Rogers (11) 36pts
B Flight
1st Nick Ordinal (17) 44pts
2ndPierre Bietry (16) 38pts
3rd Thierry Petrement (14) 37pts
C Flight
1st Ray Fowlis (36) 41pts
2nd Bruce Walters (34) 34pts
3rd Bob Fagan (19) 31pts
Well Odnoral, as in Nick Odnoral is not a four letter word but it is sure
being bandied about in much the same manner. His round of the day 44 points
won the day and B Flight and Nick showed unequivocal signs that he is coming
into top form. Lost in the roar of the lynch mob was a splendid round of 38
points by Pierre Bietry. Pierre’s good friend Thierry Petrement took the
bronze a further shot a drift.
Aussie Bruce Anderson, playing his usual steady golf, took the honours in
the premier flight with 38 points by a whisker from Peter ‘Fluent in Thai’
Hynard. The headline boy Kevin ‘Roy’ Rogers closed the flight with a steady
even par round.
Ray ‘Hub cap’ Fowlis made sure the gang in C Flight received recognition as
he posted a cracking 41 points. It is great to Ray’s dedication to the
driving range starting to bear fruit. Ray was seven clear of Aussie Bruce
Walters and a further three clear of Bob Fagan.
Ed Wyckoff and Colin Davis shared the 2’s pot with five other golfers.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd Soi13/13 near
Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name
to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Watson strikes late to take monthly honours
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Dick Warberg (left) presents the
MBMG Golfer of the Month award to Bob Watson.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Nov. 26, Mt. Shadow – Stableford
These days we always have a good turnout to play this
course. It used to be different in the past when Mt. Shadow had a fearsome
reputation but for some reason it seems to be much more playable these days.
I rather suspect the difference is due to the greens as I recall them being
really treacherous, whereas now they are still difficult but within reason.
After a quick book-in we found that we could tee off a little early and with
the weather looking good we decided on the blue tees - a real test of golf!
The course was in good condition overall; the fairways were a bit worn as
were the greens but it was good day out. I played with that ‘boring golfer’,
Bob Watson. He must get really bored as all he does is belt the ball miles
down the middle stick it on the green and has to two putt usually for a par.
He really does not get to see the parts of the course that we more
adventurous souls do.
Bob did however get a bit carried away on the par 5 around the lake. After a
big drive he went for the green and put it in the water. Well that’s him
gone I thought as I bimbled around the lake only to see his ball 6 foot from
the pin with his second ball over the water, and of course he sank the putt
for a boring par!
Round over it was a quick shower and into the restaurant where looking out
of the window we saw it pouring down. Fortunately our last group finished
just before this downpour.
Daryl Evans.
Not only was this a rainy day, it was also
time for the MBMG Golfer of the Month award and at the start of the day it
was led by Brian Gabe, with Brian Parish just behind. In the dust was Bob
Watson just in range but he had to win with the other two coming in way
behind. Surely one would score well or someone would beat Bob, after all,
playing off three-handicap and with me putting him off he would have to have
nerves of steel.
So to the results and we would see again our ‘nearly man’ lose on count
back. In the A Flight, with the best scores, the winner was Bob Watson with
37 points on count back over Tom Herrington. Tom surely has to win a count
back one day. In third was Tony Scamber with 36 points.
In the B Flight the scores were not as good. The winner with 35 points was
Barry Oats with yours truly in second with 33 and Mick Coghlan in third with
31.
You will have noted that the two Brian’s did not have a good day and Bob
Watson deservedly won with a great last day’s round. His fourth over the
water at the par 5 was a super shot and if for no other he deserves to be
the MBMG Group Golfer of the Month for that alone. Well played and well done
Bob!

Friday, Nov. 29, Pattavia Century - Stableford
With the closure of Beach Road for the fireworks
competition and the subsequent traffic snarl ups, we decided to do our
presentation at the course today. With that decision made we were soon into
cars and headed out for our first look at Pattavia Century Golf Club.
It has been over a year since we last visited the course previously known as
Century Chonburi and there was concern for the cars then as the access roads
left a lot to be desired. Well let it be known that the roads are not much
better now, but that there is a major road work underway on the main access
road from Highway 331 and if one takes it slow and easy, to avoid the larger
potholes, it is not a bad drive.
A pleasant surprise greeted us on arrival with an air conditioned
‘temporary’ clubhouse and a remodeled locker/changing room. Construction of
the new clubhouse is well underway and reportedly will be ready for use in a
couple of months.
After a swift check-in we were on the first tee and ready to go right on the
scheduled tee time. The first hole looked great with new tee boxes, a well
defined fairway and well presented bunkers spread out before us.
As we went around we found that the entire course was in very good condition
and well maintained. Greens were rolling true at reasonable speeds and
downhill putts needed to be avoided. With a new sprinkler system installed,
the days of rock hard fairways may also be a thing of the past on this
layout.
The course seems to play a bit shorter than the distances stated on the tee
boxes as the distance markers are all located on the back of the tees, and
we were playing well forward today. With the white tees listed at 6,600
yards it was nice for we old hackers to be teeing it up closer to the front
of the tee box.
Just a 4 hour walk around for our first group and after a quick cooling
shower we gathered in the clubhouse for a drink while the scores were
tabulated and the results determined.
There was some good golf today with Daryl Evans coming first with 38 points
on count back over Tom Herrington. You cannot make up a result like this as
the count back loser comes second again, but one day! In third was Brian
Parish with 36 points and in fourth was Mark West with 34 on count back over
Jack Robertson and Joel Flor.
All were pleased with the staff and the course and we will return over the
coming months. Presentation over it was back into the cars and back to
Pattaya and the traffic. T.T.F.N.

Cavaliers capture bragging rights at Navy
The Billabong Bar Golf Society
The Courtyard Cavaliers (from
left): Jeff North, Geoff Couch, Graham Beaumont and Helmut.
Monday, Nov. 25, The Emerald -
Stableford
The Emerald from the white tees was the test on Monday and we got away about
30 minutes earlier than our allotted time. The course was in beautiful
condition and was a pleasure to play with the greens great to putt on.
Taking first place and losing a shot from her handicap was Eng Duangwaw with
a magic 40 points, just edging Owen Walkley into second on count back. Third
place went to Ralph Hymer some 7 points in arrears of the top two and his
handicap went back to 19; just goes to show you can’t be in the money all
the time without the handicapper getting hold of you. In fourth spot was
Phonsie McGahan with 32 points and fifth was taken by Wayne Cotterell.
Wednesday, Nov. 27, Green Valley - Stableford
We moved to Green Valley on Wednesday and even
though it rained hard overnight the course was in great condition and the
greens were lightening fast. As carts were allowed on the fairways we didn’t
play winter rules but in some places it could have been justified.
It was John Player’s birthday this day so there were four 500 baht vouchers
up for grabs on the par three’s. It is amazing how close you can get when
you have something like these to aim for, I think the furthest one away from
the flag would have been two feet.
Birthday boy John Player.
There was some great scoring today with a
count back on 35 points deciding 6th and 7th positions with Murray Hart
missing out to Chaten Patel, who scored 19 points on the back stretch. Fifth
place went to Bob Finley with 36 points, fourth to Martin Kingswood on 37
and third to Ted Gardner, also 37, but with a more favourable inward nine.
In second place was Bob Newell with 39 points and he bogied the last two
holes otherwise he would have beaten his good mate Jim Bell who came first
with 40 points.
There were ten ‘2’s coming from Owen Walkley, Auke, Ralph Hymer, Barry
Lewis, John Locke, Sel Wegner, Brian Maddox, Paul Bourke, Wayne Cotterell
and Bob Philp.
The near pin vouchers went to Bob Philp on the fourth, Murray Hart on nine,
Owen Walkley on twelve, and Brian Maddox on sixteen,
Friday, Nov. 29, Plutaluang - Stableford
Today was our regular scramble at the Navy course
playing West and North, with the field split into eleven groups. We were off
to an early start and with no hold-ups it was just good flowing golf.
Our good friend Darl White came out for the day, even though he couldn’t
play he just wanted to enjoy the fresh air and was escorted by Chris Marsden
in a golf cart, with liquid refreshments of course.
The weather was perfect with a good breeze all day. There was the usual
banter on the tee about which was the team to beat etc. etc. and the
defending champions came to the fore again, but this time only by a small
margin.
The team from the Players Lounge, consisting of Bob Newell, Jim Bell, Gareth
Gill and Simon Philbrook took third place with a net 60.6. In second was the
team from the Billabong Bar consisting of JJ Harney, Lamun Hanley, Bill
Marsden and Bob Philp with a score of 60.4. , Taking line honours today were
the boys from the Courtyard, calling themselves the Cavaliers with a net
score of 60.1. All in all a great day out with lots of laughs and tales of
the ones that got away.
Note: The Billabong is situated just off Siam Country Club Road looking
straight down Lake Mabprachan. Call Bob on 082 204 3411.

Hill & Neilson set the pace at Burapha
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Monday, Nov. 25, Burapha - Stableford
It was a hello to some familiar names from Geraldton, West Australia; Quilly,
Herdy & Mark to name but a few and also welcome back to Angus Neilson, Wally
Brown, Mick Indge & Svenn Lund, bringing the number playing at Burapha today to
31.
There were a few rumbles of discontent that we stayed on the shorter white tees
for the A & B loops this week but you can be sure we will be back on the blues
before too long.
The weather was perfect and the course as usual was in great condition, although
new sand in some bunkers made for some interesting lies. The high season (and
rates) is now with us, bringing with it a somewhat slower pace of play but the
scores were better than usual with Greg Hill having the best of the day to win
Div B with a great 42pts. Stephen Blazsanyik (better known as Waldo) took second
on 38 after beating Pete Stonebridge on count back and Bruce Mcadam filled
fourth spot on 36.
Div A was a Scottish quinella with the popular Angus Neilson celebrating his
return with 40pts to beat fellow Scot, Jim Black on 38. Wally Brown, also having
his first game with us on this trip played well for his 37pts to edge John
Cunningham and Steve Mann on count back.
There were four ‘2’s from Wally Brown & Pete Stonebridge (A3) and Jim Black &
Bob Finley (B3).
Div A (0-15)
1st Angus Neilson (8) 40pts
2nd Jim Black (12) 38pts
3rd Wally Brown (13) 37pts
Div B (16+)
1st Greg Hill (17) 42pts
2nd Stephen Blazsanyik (18) 38pts
3rd Pete Stonebridge (16) 38pts
Wednesday, Nov. 27, Khao Kheow - Stableford
A disappointing turnout of just 10 players here at
Khao Kheow today to play the A & B nines from the yellow tees. The course was in
excellent condition, particularly A, but the one or two recovering patches on B
hardly interfered with the play. The greens were fine and very true to putt on.
We got our first two three-balls away on time but Suzi and Jack’s playing
partners, John White and Mick Indge, were nowhere to be seen. Just then the
phone went and a little Irish voice piped out, “I tink we missed the turning
Jack, we’re in Chonburi”. Well we waited as long as we could, letting a couple
of three-balls go out in front before teeing off as a two-ball, which was a
little bit slow.
We didn’t actually see John & Mick until we were on the green of A6, when we
looked across to see them teeing off on A3. So if anyone has a Garmin available
I think John might be looking for one. It reminds me of the time he missed the
turning to Treasure Hill earlier in the year – he blamed the fact that they had
cut the big tree down!
Wally Brown followed up his third place on Monday with a win here with an
excellent 36pts, beating the course specialist Suzi on c/b.
There were no ‘2’s, so after all John’s excursions, it was well worth it as he
earned third place with 32 ahead of John O’Keefe with 27.
1st Wally Brown (13) 36pts
2nd Suzi Lawton (28) 36pts
3rd John White (28) 32pts
Wednesday, Nov. 27, Siam Plantation – Stableford
We had a bit of a high season treat at Siam Plantation
today, as Jack had a few vouchers which had to be used before the end of this
month and they were added to a couple of Steve Mann’s Race2Bkk vouchers, which
were kindly donated as prize by Siam Plantation. Add member Rosco into the
equation, who signed in a few guests, and the result was 16 to play this
magnificent golf course which is always in pristine condition.
We played the B & C loops and the scoring was not the best but at least we all
enjoyed it, even though 4 players preferred to keep their scores a secret.
As there were no ‘2’s, we were able to split into two divisions - Joe Mooneyham
won Div B with 31pts from John Lawton on 30 who beat Tim Knight on c/b. Div A
was won by Steve Poznanski with the day’s best score of 33pts, from Mark
Rossiter (31) and Kevin Waycott (30).
Div A (0-13)
1st Steve Poznanski (11) 33pts
2nd Mark Rossiter (13) 31pts
3rd Kev Waycott (8) 30pts
Div B (14+)
1st Joe Mooneyham (14) 31pts
2nd John Lawton (20) 30pts
3rd Tim Knight (24) 30pts
Friday, Nov. 29, Green Valley - Stableford
Friday was a perfect day for golf... especially if you
like to play in windy conditions! The unusually strong wind kept the temperature
down as well as the scores.
As is usual nowadays, the Green Valley course was in very good condition and 31
players took to the greens but judging by the scoring, the low handicappers
seemed to find the conditions harder than the “B grade” players.
It was a welcome back to Jon Kittilsen who posted the day’s best score of 37
points to win Div B from John Lawton, who has been seen experimenting with a new
swing but we are reliably advised that his level par 36 contained many flukes
and lucky bounces. Bob Lindborg took third on 35, ahead of three tied on 34 as
Jim Bryan got the better of John O’Keefe and Tim Knight on c/b.
The best score posted by the lower handicappers was incredibly just 31pts, which
was recorded by big Steve Poznanski, picking up his second win of the week. He
beat John Cunningham on c/b while the minor places went to Angus Neilson (30),
who won on Monday, beating Jim Black on c/b, who was second in the same comp (as
Angus). The last place went to a surprised Paul Greenaway, who beat two other
players on c/b, all on 29pts.
There were five ‘2’s from Bob St. Aubin (4th), John Cunningham & Bob St. Aubin
again (9th) and Dennis Pelly & John O’Keefe on the 12th.
Div A (0-14)
1st Steve Poznanski (11) 31pts
2nd John Cunningham (6) 31pts
3rd Angus Neilson (8) 30pts
4th Jim Black (12) 30pts
5th Paul Greenaway (8) 29pts
Div B (15+)
1st Jon Kittilsen (22) 37pts
2nd John Lawton (20) 36pts
3rd Bob Lindborg (21) 35pts
4th Jim Bryan (16) 34pts
5th John O’Keefe (17) 34pts

Fred Dineley takes the Mug & Shield
PSC golf from The Growling Swan
Fred Dineley (3rd left) accepts
the Monthly Mug from Peter Grey (left), with JJ Harney, Geoff Phillips, Gary
Monley & John Davis looking on.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, Nov. 25, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
It was another beautiful, sunny day in Pattaya as
we gathered at The Growling Swan in readiness for our departure to the
picturesque Pleasant Valley Golf Course. We had 27 golfers signed up to play
and everyone showed up on time so our 3 mini vans were able to get going a
couple of minutes ahead of our 8.30 am departure time.
We had previously welcomed back Graham Rice from Gove in the Northern
Territory of Australia, Mark Stapleton returning from Melbourne, Victoria,
Gerry Crilly from Pattaya after a few weeks break & Colm Mullen with us for
the very first time from Dublin.
It was a fairly short journey to the course which was completed in 37
minutes and there was a fair bit of activity there so plenty of time to
relax and prepare. Our first four-ball got away 3 minutes ahead of our
scheduled tee time of 10.00 am and in glorious weather conditions we
proceeded fairly slowly due to heavy traffic ahead.
The golf course was in excellent condition with the greens much improved on
the last time we played there and with lush fairways that were a bit damp in
parts the stage was set for some good scores, which indeed turned out to be
the case. It was an extremely enjoyable round of golf with terrific company
and it took four hours & thirty minutes with a couple of stops for drinks.
Peter Blackburn (left) presents
the Kevin Grose Memorial Shield to Fred Dineley.
We had 2 Divisions – Division A for
handicaps 0 to 16 and Division B for handicaps of 17 & over with four places
in each. There were also rewards for nearest the pin on the four par 3’s and
longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
I must first mention the Hole In One on the 17th by Roy “Plums” Dayton, so
congratulations to him and now the only 2 Aces recorded at Growling Swan
Golf have been recorded by Roy and his partner Kae (Emerald last year).
With a great score of 45 points it was Mike “Hunter” Gosden who took first
place in A Division and with 2 golfers on 41 points a count back was
required which saw Ted Morris (20 point back nine) take second spot from
your writer, Peter “Blacky” Blackburn (18 point back nine) in third place.
Mark “Westy” West finished fourth with 39 points.
For his second win in a row it was Nolan Wise who won Division B with a fine
43 points and Roy “Plums” Dayton was second with 41 points, helped of course
by his 1 for 5 on the 17th. Ebrahim came third with 37 points and John Davis
rounded off the podium with 35 points.
Division A (0-16)
1st Mike Gosden (14) 45pts
2nd Ted Morris (12) 41pts
3rd Peter Blackburn (12) 41pts
4th Mark West (15) 39pts
Division B (17+)
1st Nolan Wise (36) 43pts
2nd Roy Dayton (26) 41pts
3rd Ebrahim (18) 37pts
4th John Davis (20) 35pts
Near Pins: 5th – Peter Blackburn, 8th – Mike Gosden, 13th – Alain Taddei,
17th – Roy Dayton
Long Putts: 9th – J J Harney, 18th – Frank Donnelly
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the
golfer who has the worst score on the day) was won by Patrick Poussier and
he accepted the award like the good sport that he is.
Mike Gosden, Patrick Poussier,
Nolan Wise & Roy Dayton.
Thursday, November 28, Treasure Hill –
Stroke/Monthly Mug & Kevin Grose Memorial Shield
This was another very special day in the history of The Growling Swan as
not only was it the 18th Monthly Mug, it was also time to remember our very
good friend Kevin Grose who tragically passed away here in Pattaya one year
ago.
Mine Host Peter Grey suggested we have a Memorial Day in memory of Kevin and
he organized and supplied a perpetual shield in honour of the occasion. We
decided that whoever won the Monthly Mug would also get their name on the
shield.
It was an early start, a 9.00 am tee time and although I did my best to let
everyone know that we were departing an hour earlier than normal it did
catch a few “napping” and we ended up with a very good field of 30 with
three people “missing the bus”.
We welcomed Scott Leszcynski back from Canada and also Growling Swan
Delinquents Geoff Phillips and Jeff Mellon. It was also time to farewell
Graham Rice who is returning to Gove in the Northern Territory of Australia
after a week here and resident Fred Dineley who is returning to Wanneroo in
Western Australia for a few weeks.
Our 3 mini vans departed 7 minutes behind schedule at 7.37 am after waiting
for a “straggler” and we headed off to Treasure Hill and after a good run up
331 arrived at the golf course just 48 minutes later to find things fairly
quiet there. After waiting for a couple of groups to tee off we sent our
first four-ball away right on the scheduled time of 9.00 am in very good
conditions with a nice cooling breeze.
The course was looking very good with the greens firm and true and it was
interesting to find several new tee boxes which changed the look of the
holes and all in all it was a very good challenge of golf which most found
out.
The traffic ahead of us soon cleared and we proceeded at a steady pace,
although alas we were slowed down somewhat by the fact that it was a stroke
round and a couple of us spent several minutes looking for golf balls after
errant shots. The “Crocodile” hole played its usual tricks and claimed
Frankie & I and I still cannot understand how they arrive at the handicap
index of that hole!
It was however an extremely enjoyable round of golf which was completed in
four hours & twenty seven minutes.
We had 3 Divisions – Division A for handicaps 0 to 16, Division B for
handicaps 17 to 26 & Division C for handicaps of 27 and over with three
places in each Division. There were also rewards for nearest the pin on the
four par 3’s and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens plus rewards
for a birdie on the par 3 second hole & longest drive on the 18th.
There were many people to thank on the day including Scott Leszcynski and
his son Kojo plus Sportscene for assisting with sponsorship, JJ Harney who
sponsored the birdie on the par 3 second hole and Tony Campbell who
sponsored the longest drive on the 18th hole. Also, of course, many thanks
to The Growling Swan for sponsoring the Monthly Mug and the Kevin Grose
Memorial Shield, plus a delicious supper.
The winner of the Monthly Mug & The Kevin Grose Memorial Shield with an
excellent score of net 66 was Fred Dineley. Division A was won by JJ Harney
with a fine net 70, with Mike “Hunter” Gosden second on net 76. With 2
golfers on net 77 a count back was required which resulted in Colm Mullen
(net 37 back nine) taking third place from Sal Brizzi (net 39 back nine).
John Davis won Division B with net 71 and Duangjai “Kae” Tusagad was second
with net 74, 1 stroke better than her partner Roy “Plums” Dayton in third
spot.
Division C was won by Gary Monley with a very good net 71 and second place
went to Andrew “Turtle” Allen with net 84 and Dick “Reverend” Braimbridge
was third with net 89.

Parker tops the podium for November
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Geoff Parker receives the KPK voucher from Buff
surrounded by the girls from The Ranch.
Monday, Nov. 25, Plutuluang – Stableford
Our previous scheduled visit to the Navy course in October had ended in
chaos with our group being double booked with a large tournament, but we
decided to give it another try because the course is popular and certainly
offers good value for money. Today there were no such problems and we chose
to play the more difficult West and North nines, since our last few visits
had been played on the South and East courses.
The weather was bright and sunny accompanied by a fresh breeze as the first
group tee’d off on schedule, with the prospect of another great day’s golf
ahead of them.
The round progressed smoothly, albeit a little slowly, until the last group
was on the 17th fairway when a nasty storm rolled in and the last two holes
were played in torrential rain, much to the amusement of the earlier groups,
who by that time were comfortably ensconced in the clubhouse.
Mike Lloyd produced another fine performance to record the best score of the
day with 42 points, six better than second placed Gordon Melia and winning
the B Flight in the process.
Gez Williams won the A Flight with a more modest total of 35 points, with a
count back being needed to separate Geoff Parker and Tony Scambler for
second and third places.
A Flight
1st Gez Wiiliams (13) 35pts
2nd Geoff Parker (14) 34pts
3rd Tony Scambler (9) 34pts
B Flight
1st Mike Lloyd (16) 42pts
2nd Gordon Melia (20) 36pts
3rd Ken Davidson (23) 34pts
Near Pins: Keith Smithson, Tony Scambler, and Geoff Cox (2).
Wednesday, Nov. 27, Royal Lakeside – Stableford
A smaller group of golfers today, but those golfers that were
deterred by the slightly longer trip missed a treat. The fairways and greens
were in their normally excellent condition and the weather was almost
perfect, so everything was set for a great round of golf on what is always a
challenging course.
Some of the rough just off the fairways has been allowed to grow longer than
usual (probably due to recent heavy rain) and was especially challenging to
those golfers unlucky enough to stray just a few yards off target. Playing
from the blue tees, some of the holes here play long (especially playing
into the breeze) and perhaps this factor, together with the always tricky
greens, was responsible for the low scoring on the day.
John Hughes was the only golfer to come close to playing to his handicap,
scoring 35 points to win the B Flight one point ahead of Gordon Melia.
In the A Flight, Tony Robbins took first place with 34 points, beating Mark
West on a count back, with John Graham taking third.
Today was the first time in the Bunker Boys’ last sixteen games that no
golfer managed to play to his handicap or better – and the last occasion was
at Royal Lakeside as well - so clearly we need to play here more often!
A Flight
1st Tony Robbins (15) 34pts
2nd Mark West (15) 34pts
3rd John Graham (10) 32pts
B Flight
1st John Hughes (17) 35pts
2nd Gordon Melia (20) 34pts
3rd PJ Redmond (27) 30pts
Near Pins: Keith Smithson, John Graham and Steve Durey.
Friday, Nov. 29, The Emerald - Medal)
Today was our final competition of the month and was kindly
sponsored by KPK Foods. Tony Scambler was holding a narrow lead in the race
for the Golfer of the Month title, ahead of Mike Lloyd, Keith Norman and
Gerry Cooney. Following our normal tradition, the four protagonists played
together in the final group, and fittingly the format was medal for the
final shootout.
The Emerald course is now almost back to its best condition and once again
the weather was fine with a fresh breeze keeping the temperature to a
reasonable level. Although this course is the shortest that we play on our
regular schedule, the layout always provides a tough test, and today was no
exception with the breeze being a significant factor on several holes.
The pressure must have taken its toll on the main contenders and
surprisingly none of them managed to find their “A”game, so Tony’s score of
net 76 was enough to secure a sixth place overall finish, and take the
November title.
Geoff Parker was the only player to better his handicap on the day to secure
the overall win, and thereby winning the A Flight two points clear of Colin
Greig.
There were three new faces on the podium in the B Flight with Mike Corner
having his most successful round since returning from U.K. to take the
honours ahead of Ken Young and Les Burns.
A Flight
1st Geoff Parker (14) net 70
2nd Colin Greig (9) net 72
3rd Keith Smithson (2) net 73
B Flight
1st Mike Corner (19) net 75
2nd Ken Young (27) net 76
3rd Les Burns (29) net 77
Near Pins: Keith Norman, Keith Smithson, Mike Lloyd and Paul Smith.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society that play out of The
Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and almost
opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but
competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. and new players are always welcome. Contact

Quigley at the double
PSC golf from The Caddyshack
A newcomer to the group took 2 wins this past week,
making it a hat trick of victories since he joined the week before.
Nathan Quigley.
On Monday 25th November at Green Valley, Nathan Quigley
(H/cap 5) beat Dave Edwards (16) on count back, both with 34 points. Third
place went to Billy Shepley (4) who beat Roger Rush (17) on count back with
33 points.
Nathan again surprised us on Wednesday 27th at Emerald, shooting an even par
round on a course he had never played before and romped home with 41 points.
Brian Orr (17) gave it his best to finish second with 38 points and John
Knight (22) beat Don Hackey (19) on count back for third place, both with 37
points.
On Friday 29th at Green Valley, Brian Orr (17) finished one place better
with a win on 38 points. Second place went to Derek Wilkin (19) with 37
points and Phonsie McGahan (5) took third with 36 points, leaving John
Pettit (11) in fourth with 35.
Our organizer threatened to cut Brian but we all decided he was short enough
already.

Paddy purrs at Pleasant Valley
PSC Golf from Siam Country Resort
Tuesday, Nov. 26, Pleasant Valley -
Stableford
Tuesday was a visit to Pleasant Valley where the course looked in good
condition, however on closer inspection there was a lot of water lying
on fairways from an overnight storm. This required carts to stay on the
paths, so we played ‘lift, clean & place’ in line with PSC guidelines.
Paddy Devereux.
Obviously this suited Paddy Devereux
(22) as he found some form to record 37 points to finish first, ahead of
Willem Lasonder (20) who signed for 35 points. Paddy also got a near pin
along with Joel & Jeff with 2.
Thursday, Nov. 28,
Crystal Bay - Stableford
Thursday was a long awaited return to Crystal
Bay, where we were allocated the C & A combination. The fairways here
were in good order, while the greens were reasonable, at only a shadow
of their former glory, when they were certainly amongst the best in the
area.
We teed off under clear skies with a good 1 club breeze, which abated as
the day wore on, making it hot & humid.
Jeff Wylie (6) & Peter Fitton (14) needed a count back to decide the
winner after both signed for 33 points; Jeff getting the nod 16/14,
however Peter was also amongst the near pin winners along with Willem,

Play to your handicap
The Backyard Golf Society
‘Irish John’ poses for a
photo with the staff at Blue Sky Bar in Ban Chang.
Another enjoyable round for the Backyard Boys at
Emerald last Friday, Nov. 29, but for some unknown reason we found the
round to be very slow, waiting on just about every tee and fairway
seemed to be the order of the day.
Winner of the stableford competition was the former ‘Irish John’,
winning on count-back from ‘The Diet Whiskey Man’. Playing to a higher
handicap than anticipated but always welcoming a shot or two, ‘Irish’
scored 34 points.
The near-pin prize went to ‘The Diet Whiskey Man’, his rotund figure
attesting to a good Thanksgiving Day turkey dinner. ‘Diet’ has recently
moved into a new abode down the road so we anticipate a great
house-warming (wrecking?) party in the next few weeks.
Skins on the day were won in multiples, with 5 each to Michelle Chatt
(plus the rollover from the previous week), ‘Golden Trowel’s Boyfriend’
and ‘Diet Whiskey’, 2 to ‘Irish John’ and 1 to Jimmy ‘2 Stone’. With
‘Foos yer Doos’ doing a runner with the kitty from last week’s rollover
we expect him to pay a round of drinks penance at next week’s game.
‘Linda’s Lovelace’ has a week free of the boss, so he will be up to no
good down the road this week, no doubt spinning yarns with ‘Whiskey’ and
‘The Quiet Man’. Russell “He’s a Victorian” has departed once again for
Cameroon, Don ‘the Divorcer’ was on his customary “now you see me, now
you don’t” break at Cats and we should see the return of ‘Passport
Control’ from Sydney this coming week.

Baldwin’s back
Phoenix Members Golf Society
Tuesday’s top three, Richard
Baldwin, Mike Gerrard and John Bartley, pose with the staff from The
Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
Tuesday, Nov. 26, Eastern Star – Stableford
Today was the last Tuesday of the month, hence
the Trattoria Italiana voucher being up for grabs and it was Richard
Baldwin who tamed the fairways of Eastern Star to take the winner’s
place on the podium.
Since our group started boycotting Phoenix until we get a better deal
from the new owners, our overall scores have reduced drastically, which
shows how one can get used to playing the same course all the while.
Richard won with a mere 33 points today, with yours truly second on 31
and John Bartley third with only 29.
Near pins went to Richard Baldwin (2), Steve Gibson and the fourth near
pin was not won and went into a lucky draw and Patrick Browne’s name
duly came out of the hat.
Other lucky draw winners (prizes donated by our hosts The Relax Bar)
went to Stefan Chanton (free massage), Bob Neylon (free drink) and
Wolfram Krueger (50 baht).
Eastern Star is not too bad a golf course but the fairways were very wet
after much recent rain.
Friday, Nov. 29,
The Emerald - Stableford
On Friday we travelled to Emerald Golf Club
and this course is possibly one of the best designed in the area but the
overall condition is not too good. The fairways are very patchy with far
too much cow grass and the greens are untidy (for want of a better word)
with many worm casts on them.
Today the declared winner was myself, Mike Gerrard, but on checking
after everyone had gone home it appeared there was a mistake with my
score and I duly disqualified myself, leaving Steve Gibson as the winner
with 32 points and in a revised second place was Stefan Shanton, also
with 32.
Near pins went to Stefan Shanton (2), Mike Gerrard and the fourth one
which no one won was drawn out of the lucky draw by Stefan Shanton.
Other lucky draw prizes went to Colin Gregg and Peter Harris.
A quick update: In the ongoing dispute with the new owners of Phoenix,
the Members Action Group legal team has now been given the backing of
the Consumer Protection Board of Thailand and hopefully the disputed
pricing may be resolved within the near future.

Golfnutter: Caddies – a joy or otherwise?
Caddies – a joy or not? It’s up to
you.
To those new to golf in Thailand, and certain
others including the type portrayed in last week’s column, be aware that much of
your golfing day’s enjoyment can stem from how well you get on with your caddie.
That’s not saying you need to go out of your way, far from it. Rather, there are
certain actions that common courtesy suggests you should observe, and others
that need be avoided – if you want to have a happy day. First up, realise what it is that brings the two of you together. You are
participating in a voluntary recreational pursuit. She/he is caddying because it
provides for their livelihood. Whatever she earns is fundamental to the welfare
of her family. Whatever the day costs you is, generally speaking, neither here
nor there. Part of her wages will be a percentage of the caddie-fee you paid when settling
your green-fee. A greater part will be the tip received from you at the end of
the round. Your tip should be the same as that recommended by the society you
are playing with – perhaps 300 baht. Other circumstances may warrant paying
more, like an outstanding attitude, “twos” or winning your match. Be aware,
regulars, like expats on fixed incomes, will not thank you for over-tipping. If you limit your expectations of caddying to pulling your bag, fetching your
clubs, tracking your ball through the air and providing the most basic of
information, you are well on the way to avoiding disappointment. TIT – treat
anything else as a bonus. Remember, you are a guest in the Kingdom. This means she doesn’t have a language
problem – you do. If her English is non-existent, use other caddies to help out
but never at the cost of putting her down. Being the cause of a caddie losing
face will not enhance your day. You will assist yourself and your caddie by knowing the following:
· How to record the score, including par, stableford and medal competitions. · How to gauge course distances and how far you hit each club. · Basics of the Rules of Golf, your societies’ rules and local course rules. · Key Thai words for the putting green: “sai” – left, “qua” – right, “lohm” –
down grain, “khung” – up grain, “mak mak” – a great deal. Some general tips:
· When emerging from the clubhouse and finding your golf-bag, greet her (or him)
with a smile and the words “Sawadee khrup” or “Sawadee ka” if you’re female.
Also inform her of your teeing order, i.e. playing group number. · Treating them with respect is a good start. Use “khrup” often. It’s an easy
word to say. It means thank you but implies a lot more. It says you are
respectful. It can also give your caddie face amongst her peers. Attach it on
the end of a “yes” or “no” answer, or on to a request for a club. “Lek-ha,
khrup,” or “five-iron, khrup,” doesn’t take much and may make her day more
enjoyable, along with her company. · Most drink stops provide liquid refreshment for caddies, free. When arriving
at a drink stop you can offer them a drink, but many would prefer the money.
Offer them either and let them choose. Personally, I make this offer once, at
the first drink stop, by offering 50 baht and saying, “up to you.” This is not
deducted from the tip paid at the end of the round. · Thais are not comfortable with physical contact in public, especially with
strangers. Hugging a caddie after a good shot is a no no. A high five, maybe.
But a simple smile and nod of the head is well received, especially after
sinking a putt that followed her recommended line. · Many Thais are naturally shy. Ever noticed a Thai appear to laugh or snigger
when something unfortunate befalls an individual? Maybe an accident where a
Farang falls over and hurts themselves? They are “laughing” because they are
embarrassed for you. They feel for your situation, and are actually empathising.
Remember this the next time something bad befalls you or your golf, and your
caddie appears to laugh. · Never do or say anything that could cause your caddie to lose face in front of
her peers. Nothing you could do would leave her feeling worse about herself, and
you. Remember, she is there to pull your bag and give you advice if she thinks
you want it. Whether you take that advice on-board is entirely up to you. The
outcome is also your responsibility. No caddie ever made a poor club selection
or played a bad shot, only golfers can do that! The caddie experience is an integral part of Thai golf. Whether your experience
is positive or otherwise is largely up to you. Enjoy, Golfnutter.

2nd Lars Nedrelid (17) 39pts
3rd Ian Pickels (16) 36pts
4th Dave Addison (14) 34pts

Near Pins: #4 Leif Kirkgaard, #7 Tate Akifumi, #13 Svend Gaarde, #16
Mike Winfield.
Long Putts: #9 Ian Pickels, #18 Joe Vanderwegon
We were off on the longest trip of the month up route 7 for an hour and 10
minutes. We got off the first tee on time under sunny skies and very steamy
conditions for the whole round. The course was in fine shape but wet from
heavy rain on Sunday afternoon.
Even though the course was busy we hustled around in 4 hours and 10 minutes
and back in the clubhouse welcomes went out to Kaj Aabling from Denmark and
Lars Nedrelid from Norway. It was also goodbye to Dave Addison, Arne Max
Pedersen and Lotte Boskov.
Two flights today with the cut at handicap 21 and a full bevy of pins to
shoot for. Leif Kirkgaard took the A Flight with a fine 41 points, two ahead
of Lars Nedrelid in second, with Ian Pickels taking third on 36 points and
Dave Addison fourth on a count back over Mike Winfield.
Daryl Evans won the B Flight with the best score of the day, 42 points,
while Joe Vanderwegon finished second with a fine round of 40 points and
Kurt Sabdgaard and Svend Gaarde completed the podium.
Thursday, Nov. 28, Pattavia Century - Stableford
A Flight (0-22)
1st Tate Akifumi (16) 38pts
2nd Niels Hansen (16) 37pts
3rd Don Richardson (12) 34pts
4th Mike Winfield (21) 33pts
B Flight (23+)
1st Kurt Sandgaard (32) 35pts
2nd Joe Vanderwegon (24) 34pts
3rd Susan Gaarde (26) 31pts
4th Hugh O’Donnell (33) 30pts
Near Pins: #4 Monte Sykes, #13 Kaj Aabling.
Long Putts: #9 Ian Pickels, #18 Hugh O’Donnell
Today we were off to play the refurbished Century Chonburi, now known as
Pattavia Century and after a smooth check-in we got off the first tee bang
on time. The course was in fine condition with crusty but fairly fast greens
and the staff were very professional. The previously meager facilities have
been upgraded and the new clubhouse will be opening about the third week in
January. The staff were unable to tell us about any possible increase in
green fees once the clubhouse is opened.
The course was busy but we still got around in about 4 hours and 15 minutes,
even though we caught up with a 5-ball on the 11th.
Today we welcomed Georg Bolik from Germany, Hugh O’Donnell and Monte Sykes
from America and said goodbye to Joe Vanderwegon who was heading back to
Belgium.
We had two flights with the cut at handicap 22 and Tate Akifumi won the A
Flight with 38 points ahead of Niels Hansen in second on 37. Don richardson
took third with 34 points and Mike Winfield won a count back for fourth over
Leif Kirkgaard.
Kurt Sandgaard led the B Flight home with 35 points while Joe Vanderwegon
placed second just one behind and Susan Gaarde and Hugh O’Donnell placed
third and fourth respectively.
Lehane wins battle of Potters
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society made another visit to Silky Oak on Monday, 25th
November to play a stableford competition on an empty course which was
in fine condition after the recent closure. Fairways were lush and
greens were consistent, if a little slow but it did nothing to spoil a
day of “millionaires’” golf. With no more than four hours for a round it
was a rare occasion in high season.
The single flight were treated to some good scores with Canadian John
Chelo again finding his form with a solid 35 points for third place but
the real battle was in the group ahead with Dave Lehane and “Banjo”
Bannister going stroke for stroke throughout seventeen holes. The
battling duo from the “Potteries” found the game decided by one weak
shot on the last and Dave Lehane held his nerve to win with 39 points
from Banjo’s 38.
It was no more than the day deserved and the group had enjoyed a fine
day out. There were no birdie ‘2’s and the final act at the presentation
was to award Rabbi’s non-winners’ beer to Alan Flynn, and not for the
first time!
Tense competition at Crystal Bay
The Pattaya Golf Society chose Crystal Bay as the venue for its November
monthly medal event on Wednesday, 27th and the appointed combination was
the B and C nines. They were in a satisfactory condition but the greens
were “dirty” and were in need of rolling.
The field was divided into two flights at sixteen and under and play got
underway a few minutes early. The course has always assisted good scores
in stableford competitions but strokeplay is a different kettle of fish
and so it was to prove again.
In the second flight Len Jones and Phil McClure shared second place with
net 77, both also achieving birdie ‘2’s on the front nine. Also in the
same group Michael MGuigan achieved the feat on C4. The flight winner
was Dave Plaiter with net 76.
In the top flight Andrew Purdie took third place with a steady level par
net 72 whilst “Banjo” Bannister and Wichai Tananusorn went one better to
share the win with net 71.
Banjo shared the top flight ‘2’s pot with Rick Schramm, the later also
taking the Booby Bevy twenty-four hours after his arrival for losing
almost all his handicap on the par five C6. Welcome back old friend!
Banjo’s rousing encore
The Pattaya Golf Society ended a successful week with a visit to Khao
Kheow to play a stableford competition over the A and B nines on a fine,
warm day with a constant fresh breeze. The course was in good condition
but the B greens were a little slower by comparison with those on the
front nine.
The field was divided into two flights with the cut at 16.9 and the
competition was tight as ever. In the second flight Len Jones and Phil
McClure repeated their exercise of two days previously by sharing second
place with 36 points each whilst a solid round of 38 points by Jim
Ferris took the victory.
In the top flight Peter Wilson and Paul Edgar shared third place with 33
points whilst Brian Talbot recorded 35 points for second place. The
winner was “Banjo” Bannister, in the frame for the third time this week,
again with a sub-par round, this time his 43 points blowing the field
away. “Awesome” is a much overused word these days but it perfectly
defines his performance this week as he finished the week ten under par!
Shame he has to return to UK for Christmas at the weekend instead of
gracing the golf courses here with the PGS.
Brian Talbot picked up the only ‘2’ in the top flight on B8 whilst John
Chelo repeated the feat in the second flight on A5. The Booby went to
John also for letting the round slip with only fourteen points on the
back nine following his twenty one on the front nine. Rabbi’s
consolation beer went to Brian Beaupré and was a suitable end to the
day’s proceedings.

Butler top scores at Green Valley
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Mike Lewis, Pete Sumner and
Dennis Scougal.
Monday, Nov. 25, Greenwood – Stableford
A field off 31 out today and we were allocated the C and B nines with two
divisions and the cut at 7-15 and 16 plus.
The Welsh boy Mike Lewis topped division 2 with 36 points, beating Chris
Reed by one point, and ‘Countback’ Burnie placed third with 34.
Thirty five was the winning score in division 1 for Jan Sordal alias Sassa,
while Brian Libbey took second one point behind and Pete Sumner was third on
32.
Near pins were snared by Billy Fitzgerald, Mike Lewis, Terry Madsen, Chris
Voller and Cliff Elliott.
There were no ‘2’s in either division so a rollover to Green Valley on
Wednesday.
Wednesday, Nov. 27, Green Valley - Stableford
We could only book nine tee times today and we had to turn many
people away as it is not fair turning up at the course with an extra 3 or 4
groups. There were three divisions out with the cut at 6-15, 16-19 and 20 +.
Paul Butler recorded the highest score of the day, winning division 1 with
38 points while Billy Fitzgerald was second on 37 and in his last game with
us before his return to Belfast, Andy Galloway took third after beating
Kevin Blake, Mike Chatt, and Lindsay Phillips on count back, all four
scoring 30 points.
In division 3 Andy Oz topped the podium with 35 points, beating Chris Reed
and Alan Bissell by one. Chris had the better back nine so took the
runner-up spot ahead of Andy.
Mike Lewis was the winner in division 2 with 35 points, with the Swiss boy
Volker Suhr second on 35 and in third place was Eiichi Matsumoto on 31.
Near pins went to Billy Fitzgerald, Dennis Scougall, Raivo Velsberg (2),
Andy Crabb, Chris Reed and Iain Walsh.
Once again there were no ‘2’s in either division so another rollover.
There was a warm welcome back today to Raivo Velsberg.
Friday, Nov. 29, Eastern Star - Stableford
The guys who live on the course here suggested we employ the
‘pick, clean and place’ ruling today as a two hour rainstorm the previous
day had left the fairways sodden with no run whatsoever.
The cut in the two divisions was 7-17 and 18+ and the best scores returned
were two 36’s in division 1 from Pete Sumner and Wilf Latham, with Pete
edging it 19/17 on count back. Marty Rock took third after beating Frank
Kelly on another count back after they both came in with 32 points each.
It was a tough test out there today with 9 cards in division 1 with scores
below 30 and in division 2, 11 cards with scores below 25.
Always in the reckoning, Iain Walsh won division 2 with 35 points and the
‘darkside boy’ Andy Baber was second with 32. Joe Kubon pipped Chris Reed
for third spot 11/10 on the back six after they both scored 30 points.
Near pins were claimed by Billy Fitzgerald (2), Pete Sumner, Andy Baber, Jim
Connelly and Chris Reed.
The only ‘2’ today was in division 2 for Darryl Blair on the third hole.

Beaupre starts the week with bang
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
The firework show continued this past week with an international contest
between four countries down on Pattaya beach and there were some fantastic
displays on show. Not to be outdone, there were also some fantastic displays
from the golfers of the TRGG.
Monday, Nov. 25,
Mt. Shadow - Stableford
It was Brian Beaupre who provided all the fireworks on
Monday at Mountain Shadow and he put on a one man display which outshone all
the rest, returning to the clubhouse with 39pts. Not bad at all from a five
handicapper on a tough course.
Brian Beaupre.
A special mention must also go to Geoff
Beckett who got his act together this week and finished top of Division 2 to
give him some pleasant memories of his latest trip to Thailand. Geoff was
returning home later in the week to sunny Shepperton in the south of
England, although perhaps that should be dark and damp Shepperton at this
time of year.
Div.1 (0-14)
1st Brian Beaupre (5) 39pts
2nd Jim McNeill (14) 36pts
3rd Roger Brocksopp (10) 34pts
Div.2 (15+)
1st Geoff Beckett (28) 36pts
2nd Tom Kett (20) 35pts
3rd Ken Brehm (18) 35pts
Tuesday, Nov. 26, Green Valley - Stableford
Tuesday it was back to Green Valley for our regular
Tuesday outing and this time it was that man from down under, Daryl Ottaway,
who lit up the sky, finishing miles ahead of the opposition on 41pts so it
was obviously just a walk in the park for Daryl.
Another good performance came from that man about town Steve Carleton who
must have got in an early night for once. He finished second on a very
creditable 37pts.
1st Daryl Ottaway (8) 41pts
2nd Steve Carleton (8) 37pts
3rd Neil Bramley (10) 36pts
Thursday, Nov. 28, Bangpakong - Stableford
It was a welcome return to Bangpakong on Thursday, now
fully recovered from looking like a battlefield back in June after all the
rain. This is one of those courses that doesn’t beat you up; it is a
friendly course where everybody can have a good day on a beautifully
maintained piece of land. That is how it again worked out and a number of
golfers returned their best scores for a long while, including yours truly.
Only poor old Arthur Heck wished he had stayed in bed after a particularly
bad day.
Geoff Beckett.
Special mentions must go to Neil Bramley
and Tom Pett, the winners of the two divisions who were definitely glad that
they didn’t stay in bed.
Div 1 (0-15)
1st Neil Bramley (10) 39pts
2nd Paul Stanton (13) 38pts
3rd Ed Brubaker (14) 37pts
Div 2 (16+)
1st Tom Kett (20) 40pts
2nd Andy Rich (21) 38pts
3rd Dorsey Richardson (17) 35pts
Saturday, Nov. 30, Eastern Star - Stableford
The TRGG finished up the week on Saturday with a trip
to Eastern Star and the high scoring settled down and returned to normal.
A Thai lady, Rungratree Puangsal, topped the leader board, playing to her
handicap and reduced all the men in the field to also-rans. Well done to
her!
1st Rungratree Puangsal (16) 36pts
2nd Neil Bramley (9) 34pts
3rd Paul Stanton (12) 33pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week!
Murray masters monthly medal
PSC golf from The Golf Club
Steve Snelgrove, Nigel Flanagan,
Murray Hart and Ken Aihara.
Steve Ellison
Monday, Nov. 25, Green Valley (white tees) - Monthly Medal
1st Murray Hart (13) net 65
2nd Nigel Flanagan (12) net 67
T3rd Steve Snelgrove (7) net 68
T3rd Jeff Cordeiro (8) net 68
4th Ken Aihara (5) net 69
First of all we must thank the staff at Green Valley for getting everyone
out today, as they handled our 9 groups of Pattaya’s finest smoothly and
efficiently. It looked a bit dodgy up in the clouds as the rain was
threatening, but it stayed away for a “fontok”-free round of golf under cool
and overcast skies. The golf course was in perfect shape once again.
We had 5 golfers under the magic 70 number, which on any other Medal day
could easily have won it all. It’s a credit to their game, so
congratulations all round to the lads up on today’s leaderboard for turning
in some great scorecards in our Medal.
Dale Shier & Mark Wood with
scramble winners John McHugh & Ernie McInerney.
Steady Ken was in the chase but could only put together a
round of 69, and we saw Cordeiro and Snelgrove both shoot brilliant 68’s,
but still not good enough.
Then we get to the bridesmaid, Nigel (C’mon Man!) Flanagan. We had to peel
his fingers off Murray’s neck as it turned out, but hey, a guy has to do
what a guy has to do man. OK, I made that last bit up.
Nigel was actually quite gracious in defeat (for Nigel) and all credit goes
to Murray Hart who had “one of those days” that keep us coming back for more
golf. Murray had one of his best rounds of the year and his 65 won him a new
Antigua TGC shirt for the November Monthly Medal.
Wednesday, Nov. 27, Khao Kheow (white tees) – Stableford
T1st Ken Aihara (5) 37pts
T1st Ian Brimble (7) 37pts
2nd Roger Brocksop (10) 33pts
Khao Kheow is one of our best courses here in Pattaya, and you are making a
big mistake if you visit here and leave without playing this golf course.
There are 27 holes here and each 9 is a great test of golf that has been
designed by Pete Dye. It was another beautiful day for golf and this is a
course that we all look forward to playing.
Roger Brocksop took sole second with his 33 points, but it was a tie for
first place as Steady Kenny Aihara and pal Ian Brimble slugged it out down
the 18th and both came up with 37 points on the card. Ian is heading back to
Texas, so we bid him farewell and happy holidays. Kenny will be staying here
for the winter and I would imagine several more podium topping placings!
Friday, Nov. 29, St. Andrews (white tees) – 2-Man Scramble
1st Ernie McInerney & John McHugh (8.2) net 60.8
2nd Dale Shier & Mark Wood (8.3) net 61.7
3rd Steve Mulberry & Steve Snelgrove (6.5) net 62.5
It was a morning of recovery as our Thanksgiving Dinner left us with full
tummies and a feeling that the bar had over-served us. Turkey Day is always
a big event here at TGC and to have it followed by haggis, tatties and neeps
was a rare treat!
On to the golf and it was time to have a little fun and head out to St.
Andrews for our inaugural St. Andrews Day Tournament. It was a sea of blue
and white as we helped our Highland buddies celebrate their National Day,
albeit 24 hours early. What better excuse to crack open the top shelf
single-malts and so the festivities began in earnest. This was the first
year for the comp, and I am sure it will continue to grow as the years go
by. Oh, and thanks to Sugar for the idea!
It was a near perfect day for golf once again and a scramble is a great
format on this golf course. We were giving 37% of the combined handicap so
there were no complaints from the peanut gallery as all 12 teams had an
equal chance of a victory. It was a bit slow out there today, but we were
not in a big rush anyway so had time to stop and smell the pineapples.
In third place stood a pair of Steves. The combo of Mulberry and Snelgrove
ham and egged it for a net 62.5, a fine score on the day. Next up the
leaderboard was the duo of Dale Shier and Scotsman Mark Wood, and they
easily won the best-dressed team of the day but sadly missed a putt too many
as they ham and cheesed it and turned in a 61.7 for second place.
The low score of the day was the pairing of Ernie McInerney and TGC partner
John McHugh who hammed it up the whole way around to finish with a 60.8 and
the winners of our first St. Andrews Day Scramble. Way to go boys, job well
done!
Thanks to all who joined us for another great week of golf in paradise.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We try to schedule summer

Chonburi teams take 2 races at Pattaya Traditional Long Boat Tournament
A representative from the
Yiuttanakanawa team of Chonburi (left) accepts HRH Princess Maha CHakri
Sirindhorn cup from Wittaya Kunplome, President of Chonburi PAO.
Phasakorn Channgam
Chonburi teams took two of five major races at the Pattaya
Traditional Long Boat Tournament.
The crew of the Yuttakananwa won 100,000 baht and the HRH Princess Maha
Chakri Sirindhorn trophy for the second time by taking the 55-paddler long
boat category race while the crew of the Jaomaepraduthong took first in the
55-paddler Type B boat bracket.
Chonburi Provincial Administrative Organization President Wittaya Kunplome
opened the Nov. 23-24 competition at Mabprachan Reservoir with Nongprue
Mayor Mai Chaiyanit and other top local officials looking on.
Spectators flocked to the shores
of Lake Mabprachan in their hundreds to enjoy the long boat racing weekend.
Forty-two boats piloted by rowers from Thailand,
Indonesia, Laos and Myanmar participated in the event, although none of the
foreign teams placed. Trophies were awarded in five categories: Large boats
(55 paddlers), long-tail boats (30 paddlers), large boats types B and C, and
small boats type B. Nearly 400,000 baht in prizes was up for grabs.
Yuttakanawa and Pornprakaew race

Regents International students bring home the gold
Part of the Regents International School’s
Under 15 Team that brought back an impressive 50 medals from the FOBISIA
Games in Malaysia.
Regents International School Pattaya took part in the U15 FOBISIA Games
held in Malaysia on Thursday, November 14. Competing against six other
international schools from all over South East Asia, the squad brought
home over 50 medals, including 18 from the track and field disciplines.
FOBISIA, the Federation of British International Schools in Asia, is an
association that provides a range of events for students based at
British schools in Asia. This year’s Games were hosted by the Kolej
Tuanka Ja’afar School in Malaysia, with over 290 students taking part in
a wide range of sports, including football, basketball, swimming and
athletics.
Head of Physical Education at Regents, Paul Madden, commented: “This
year the sports performances at Regents have surpassed our expectations
and we are incredibly proud of all the students who took part. The
students have made the most of the coaching and facilities we have
provided them with, but I’m delighted to see that they also took to
Malaysia a keen sense of sportsmanship and fair play.”
School Principal, Mike Walton added: “The FOBISIA Games is just one of
many events at which students and their teachers have put in the extra
time, effort and training to achieve and surpass their goals. We teach
our students a famous quote from Kurt Haan, ‘There is more in you than
you think’, and this year’s U15 Regents team have certainly proved that.
Well done to them all!”

Record visitor turnout at 2013 Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show
The 115-foot Phatsara, presented by
Northrop and Johnson, was the largest yacht in the 2013 Ocean Marina Pattaya
Boat Show.
A busy Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show came to a close with a
record visitor turnout and strong trade reported. Held from November 22 to 24 at
Ocean Marina Yacht Club, the 2013 Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show was the second
edition and the biggest and best yet.
The multi-million dollar line-up of boats, supercars and bikes, luxury
properties, marine products and services, and much more, attracted 4,334
visitors to the three-day expo – including both expatriates and Thai nationals,
who are showing an increasing interest in the marine leisure lifestyle.
In only its second year, the 2013 Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show had a strong
marketing plan targeting Bangkok-based Thais and expatriates from the
surrounding region, and delivered sales and tangible leads for exhibitors.
Talking of the Boat Show’s aims, Supatra Angkawinijwong, Deputy Managing
Director, Ocean Property, the organisers, said: “Having launched the Ocean
Marina Pattaya Boat Show last year, our goals for 2013 were to grow the number
of exhibitors and display areas, and to attract a larger and more diverse
visitor demographic to the Show. Talking to exhibitors, they are very happy and
the event was a great success.”
Visitors enjoyed browsing the many
different exhibits and trade stalls at this year’s Pattaya Boat Show.
The success was confirmed by many exhibitors, including
Sergio Loiacono, Country Manager Thailand, Simpson Marine: “This was our second
year at the show and you can see the progress. We have a few interesting clients
as a result of the Show. Probably 30-40% of visitors to our display have been
Thai, 30% Russian and the rest a mix of expat nationalities.”
Princess Yachts Bangkok, a subsidiary of the luxury importer Niche Cars,
presented a selection of luxury motor yachts at the Show, including the popular
V39 sports cruiser.
“We had a lot of interest from visitors and welcomed celebrities and well-known
businessmen to our display. During the Show, we sold a THB21.5 million yacht and
also expect to sell three more yachts from the Show”, said Anchita Chotisirikul,
Secretary to the Managing Director, Niche Cars Co., Ltd.
Wirat Pholpradab, President of A.G. Cars & Marine Co., Ltd., exclusive dealer in
Thailand for the well-known Cranchi motor yachts, commented on traffic on the
first day: “We had more than 50 visitors, and more than 20 of them showed
genuine interest in buying a Cranchi M44 HT.”
Complementing the luxury boats and marine lifestyle offerings at the 2013 Show
was a large display of leading auto marques, including Lamborghini, Porsche,
Land Rover, Harley Davidson and Ducati.
Both Ducati and Harley Davidson were showing new models for the first time in
Thailand and visitor feedback was strong. Nuttached Suapechra, General Manager
of Ducati Pattaya, said, “This is our first year at the Boat Show and we have
met many potential buyers, with approximately 20-30% of our visitors being
expats. Some of these plan to go to our shop after the Show.”
The demographics of Thailand’s marine marketplace are changing with now many
Russians buying boats and strong interest from overseas buyers in the nearby
region – such as Singapore and Hong Kong, who can conveniently to fly to Bangkok
which is just 1-2 hours from Pattaya – and Thais living in Bangkok who are
looking for a seaside lifestyle on the weekend.
“We see an exponential growth in Russians buying boats in Pattaya but there is
also a genuine interest from Thais in buying sailing boats compared to a few
years back when they were only considering buying motor yachts,” said Mr
Loiacono.
The 2013 in-water yacht display was bigger and better than ever before, showing
the growing interest in boating in Thailand. Top yacht brands from day boats to
super-yachts, locally-built boats of international standards and marine products
and services were complemented by luxury automobiles, villas and condominiums,
and elegant timepieces by Edox.
So, a resounding success in 2013, the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show can now
look forward to next year’s event with eager anticipation.

Takeshi and Markku claim the final Medals
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, Nov. 25, Greenwood - Stableford
CSS 73
Division 1 (0–12)
1st Yasuo Suzuki (12) 36pts
2nd Garry Barling (9) 34pts
3rd Allen Raaen (8) 32pts
4th Peter Skinner (11) 32pts
Division 2 (13+)
1st John Wood (24) 34pts
2nd Yukio Kikuchi (19) 32pts
3rd Hideo Akiyama (20) 31pts
4th Peter Brown (24) 31pts
Rodney Nabbe.
A good turnout required the formation of two divisions with
the cut being set at a low 12 and below for the first division. At last the wet
weather seems to have relented, at least for a little while, and it is now time
to make hay.
The course was in great shape and the winds light, but it appeared to be very
difficult to score freely whichever division one was playing with as the cards
attested at the end of the round.
Yasuo Suzuki returned the best of the day at level handicap to win the first
division by two from Garry Barling, with Allen Raaen taking third after winning
a count back over Peter Skinner with a better 16 to 14.
John Wood at last won a day after coming second a few times recently as he took
the second division by two from Yukio Kikuchi, leaving Hideo Akiyama to win
another count back over Peter Brown by a margin of 16 to 14 and claim third
spot.
Surprisingly, with the course playing fairly tough, there were several 2’s on
the day with Hideo Akiyama claiming sole ownership of the second division and
Barry Wellings, Jens Gunnarsson and Geoff Potter sharing the first division
pool.
Before the presentations were made there were welcome backs for Garry Barling,
Daryl Burkett and Peter Brown.
Wednesday, Nov. 27, Khao Kheow - Stableford
CSS 72
Division 1 (0–14)
1st Rodney Nabbe (11) 39pts
2nd Allen Raaen (8) 33pts
3rd Garry Barling (9) 33pts
Division 2 (15+)
1st Don Everett (20) 38pts
2nd Phillip Cass (21) 34pts
3rd Yukio Kikuchi (19) 33pts
Don Everett.
Once again two divisions were required but this time the cut
came at 14 and even though the course was set up to be playing more on the
difficult side, the scoring was much better that the previous outing with both
divisions being won by under handicap rounds.
The first division was led in by Rodney Nabbe at three under, which left a huge
gap of six shots before the next players trailed in to contest second and third
places. Allen Raaen took second place after winning a count back over Garry
Barling, carding a better 17 to 14 over the inward nine.
Don Everett also led the second division by a distance, as he continued with his
good run of form heading towards the IPGC Club Championships in early December,
with a two under handicap return which left Phillip Cass in second and Yukio
Kikuchi again taking a spot on the podium in third.
There were no 2’s in the first division but Danny Greer made it many happy
returns as he slipped the lone one in to claim the second division pot.
Prior to the presentations there were welcome backs for Philip Cass and Danny
Greer together with a farewell for Geoff Potter returning to the UK to keep an
eye on his now famous and much in demand son following his recent huge success
on The X Factor talent show.
Friday, Nov. 29, Crystal Bay - Monthly Medals
CSS 71
Division 1 (0–15)
1st Takeshi Hakozaki (10) 68pts
2nd Jens Gunnarsson (14) 69pts
3rd Keith Evans (7) 70pts
Division 2 (16+)
1st Markku Tynell (23) 74pts
2nd Philip Cass (21) 74pts
3rd Shuichi Kodaka (18) 74pts
With Phoenix still on the unplayable list, the monthly medals are being
contested over various courses and this month’s was set for Crystal Bay, where
again the course was found to be in good condition with just the greens a little
tricky.
Takeshi Hakozaki took full advantage of his member’s knowledge on the greens, as
he knocked them in from all areas to take his first medal of the year and claim
the first division’s last place in the Gold and Silver Medals to be held at The
Emerald on the 27th December. Takeshi won by a single stroke from Jens
Gunnarsson, with Keith Evans just one further back in third.
The second division last spot and the month’s medal went to Markku Tynell after
a three-way count back over Phillip Cass in second and Shuichi Kodaka in third
as they each scored 36.5, 37.5 and 38 respectively.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Takeshi Hakozaki, Paul Gill, Keith
Evans and Daryl Burkett shared the rollover pool in the first division.
