Rodgers & Rifkin too good
PSC Golf from The Growling Swan
Paul Rodgers, Ebrahim & Stu
Rifkin.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, Sept. 16, Pattana C & A – Stableford
It wasn’t raining but it looked as if it could as
we gathered at the Growling Swan to prepare for our departure to the classy
Pattana Golf Course and the field was quite good at 24.
We were happy to welcome well known Pattaya Hotelier Rosco Langoulant and
his mate Paul Rodgers from Australia, John Stewart from Queensland, Jim
Hallett from Halifax in the UK and after just a week and a half back in
Perth, Australia Brad “Bad” Todd with us once again for another month. We
also said farewell to Frank Donnelly who is off back to Bundaberg in
Queensland for a couple of months.
Everyone was on time so we departed the GS five minutes early at 8.25 am and
after a 45 minute drive our 2 mini vans arrived at the golf course where it
appeared to be reasonably busy and check in was swift, particularly now that
they have stopped photo copying everyone’s PSC Membership Cards. We were
told it was to be C & A nines in that order so off we went and under
overcast skies our first group teed off 15 minutes early at 9.45 am.
No carts were allowed on the fairways so with three of our group in carts we
knew that it would be a fairly slow round and preferred lies through the
greens was the order of the day. The course was in great shape and the
greens very well maintained as we proceeded whilst continually looking
upwards expecting a downpour any minute but thankfully there were only a few
drops and then the weather cleared.
Mark Stapleton & Kevin Waycott.
The course was quite wet after much recent
rain but the relief rule made things a little easier so I expected the
overall scoring to be fairly good. The first nine took two hours & fifteen
minutes and slowed down a fair bit on the second nine due to groups being
slotted in ahead of us an A1 but we managed to complete the very enjoyable
eighteen holes of golf in four hours & forty five minutes, quite slow but
fair enough under the conditions. It had been a very enjoyable day with
excellent company on a very good golf course.
We had 2 Grades - A Grade for handicaps 0 to 13 and B Grade for handicaps 14
& over with 4 places in each grade. There were also rewards for nearest the
pins on the four par threes and longest first putts on the A9 & C9 greens.
Newcomer Paul Rodgers won the A Grade section with a very good 39 points and
with two on 37 points a count back was needed which saw Paul “Hacky” Hack
(18 point back nine & 12 points on the last 6 holes) finish second from Mike
Allidi (18 point back nine & 11 points on the last 6 holes) who finished
third. The consistent Kevin “Wayco” Waycott came in fourth with a steady 36
points.
Another count back was required to determine the winner of B Grade with two
golfers on 36 points and it was Stu “Heineken” Rifkin (17 point back nine &
13 points on the last 6 holes) who was the winner from Frank “Woody”
Donnelly (17 point back nine & 11 points on the last 6 holes) in second
place. Yet another count back was needed with two on 35 points and John
Davis (18 point back nine & 11 points on the last 6 holes) took third place
from Mark Stapleton (18 point back nine & 10 points on the last 6 holes) in
fourth spot.

3rd John Davis (23) 35pts
4th Mark Stapleton (25) 35pts

Allidi
Long Putts: A9 – Frank Donnelly, C9 – Martin Todd
The Growling Swan NAGA Award (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score
on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won for the
very first time by the very likeable Ebrahim and he accepted the award like
the very good sport that he is.
Thursday, Sept. 19, Greenwood C & A - Stableford
Once again there were overcast skies as we
gathered at The Growling Swan in readiness for the journey to Greenwood. We
had a full field of 24 signed up but alas – Number 1 Growling Swan
Delinquent Peter Grey was not there. I whizzed over to his place on the
motor bike to find him moaning & groaning due to a dose of the “Don
Bradman’s” and alas we were down to 23.
We welcomed back Stephen Newton, who had been working in Indonesia, and also
Phil Holmes who is here on holiday from Perth, Australia.
Departing the GS 5 minutes early at 8.25 am it was a slow trip in drizzling
rain and 60 minutes later we arrived at the course to find a fair bit of
activity but we were still able to hit off 5 minutes ahead of schedule at
10.00 am. It was a “gloomy” day weather wise and there was light rain for
most of the day and naturally the course was quite wet so with no carts on
the fairways preferred lies through the greens were allowed.
The course was as usual in good condition considering the amount of water it
had been getting and most of the tee shots got zero run and in some cases
actually came backwards a few inches. Not to worry though as we love our
game of golf and although the drizzling rain kept up it wasn’t enough to
warrant pulling the “brolly” out and we completed the round in four hours &
fifteen minutes after enjoying the day and the very good company.
We had 2 Grades - A Grade for handicaps 0 to 18 and B Grade for handicaps 19
& over with 4 places in each grade. There were also rewards for nearest the
pins on the four par threes and longest first putts on the A9 & C9 greens.
It was ‘Mr Consistency’ Kevin “Wayco” Waycott who finished on top in the A
Grade section with 38 points, just beating John Pierrel who finished second
with 37. Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei was third with 35 points and Mike
allidi fourth on 34.
There was an absolute “bolter” in the B Grade with Mark Stapleton carding 41
points and winning from Russell Calcutt who was 12 points further back in
second place. With 2 players on 28 points a count back was required which
saw Max “Corsets” Bracegirdle (14 point back nine) finish third from
Thientong Charoenrung (13 point back nine) in fourth spot.
A Flight (0-18)
1st Kevin Waycott (11) 38pts
2nd John Pierrel (11) 37pts
3rd Alain Taddei (16) 35pts
4th Mike Allidi (3) 34pts
B Flight (19+)
1st Mark Stapleton (25) 41pts
2nd Russell Calcutt (36) 29pts
3rd Max Bracegirdle (25) 28pts

Near Pins: A2 – Mike Allidi, A6 – John Pierrel, C6 – Kevin Waycott

The Growling Swan NAGA Award was well won once again by Niall Stuart and he
accepted the award with pride but unfortunately as the previous winner of
the NAGA had taken it home & forgotten to bring it back there was no cap to
be worn.
Max then kindly paraded Deefa the Dog and of course collected many donations
for the needy in Pattaya from our generous Growling Swan Golfers.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high
handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play Mondays
& Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar) in Soi
Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. For bookings or
more information please contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or email to
[email protected].
We also play bowls out of the Growling Swan every Wednesday and Sunday.
Sunday is Lawn Bowls and Wednesday is Indoor Bowls. All are welcome and for
anyone that is interested the transport leaves The Growling Swan at 10.00am
on each of those mornings. For more information please contact Paul Rennison
on 0843 454 005.

Hart heads the field at Green Valley
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Monday, Sept. 16, Burapha – Stableford
A pleasant enough day for the 35 players at
Burapha playing the C & D nines with the added bonus of a surprise two-tee
start, on top of the fifteen minute earlier than scheduled start time,
enabling General Jack to get everybody away before 9.45.
Chris Smart.
The scoring was fair to middling in Div A,
with an unusually high upper limit of 15, which elevated John Stafford,
quite uniquely to the first division. He made the most of the honour to
score 36pts to take first place by two from three guys all tied up on 34;
namely Bob Finley, Steve Poz and Chris Playforth, the usual count back
sorting them all out.
Div C didn’t score any better but another win for the fast improving Chris
Smart, also with 36pts, underlined that his handicap of 27 is not likely to
last long. Bruce McAdam was back in the frame again with 33 ahead of Aussie
visitor Chris Van Hausen in third and nice to see Ivan also on the podium
with his 29pts, edging out two other players.
The top score of the day was in Div B and it came from Greg Hill with a
mighty fine 39pts, two in front of the afore-mentioned Chris’s mate, John
Mills. Waldo was back in third on 34 just heading off John Fitzgerald on the
same score.
There were three ‘2’s from Bob Finley & Chris Playforth (C8) & Greg Hill
(D2).
Div A (0-15)

Tuesday, Sept. 17, Phoenix - Stableford
We had 7 Outbackers today playing the Mountain and
the Lakes but due to the heavy rain the night before, the golf carts were
only allowed on the paths making it very difficult for the caddies to bring
the correct clubs. We played preferred lies through the green, necessary due
to the wetness of the course but the greens were still quite fast.
John Lawton.
Unfortunately, Phoenix management have now
brought out a coupon service at the kiosks where you buy 100 baht’s worth of
coupons for a 20 baht bottle of water, as change you receive 80 baht in
coupons. You also have to spend all the coupons as you don’t get your money
back but apparently you can use them on another day.
We have also heard through the grapevine that in the very near future it
will be one person to a cart for the same price (700 baht) – Hmmmm!
The scoring was not that brilliant with the Suzi’s “Old Man” getting the win
with just 33pts from Aussie visitor Chris Playforth (32) who beat the
aforementioned Suzi on count back.
There were no ‘2’s.
1st John Lawton (19) 33pts
2nd Chris Playforth (10) 32pts
Wednesday, Sept. 18, Siam Plantation - Stableford
A spectacular 75 gross gave Geoff Stimpson 41pts
to win here on the A & B nines on somewhat damp course, producing little or
no roll on the fairways. The rest of the scoring wasn’t too shabby either
with Chris’s name coming up again with 40pts to take second, going one place
better than his third at Burapha on Monday and to end his golfing holiday on
a high.
Murray Hart.
It was no great surprise that Rosco took
third, as he loves this course too much, beating playing partner and mate,
Paul Rodgers, both with the same 39.
There were two ‘2’s from Geoff Stimpson (A3) and Paul Rodgers (A6)
1st Geoff Stimpson (8) 41pts
2nd Chris Van Hausen (23) 40pts
3rd Rosco Langoulant (13) 39pts
Friday, Sept. 20, Green Valley - Stableford
There couldn’t have been many places where golf
was played today, after continuous rain for the last couple of days. PSC’s
Pattana Monthly was washed away, so Sugar dashed across to Green Valley to
see if he could salvage a game there. To his surprise and our surprise he
could, particularly as the course was still closed at 7.30 in the morning
but it brightened up a little and the rained eased to a drizzle and play was
possible, albeit with preferred lies through the green. With not too many
withdrawals and a couple of late additions, including Sugar, 23 players took
to the track.
Muzza, blazed a trail with his 39pts to win the premier division by two from
Paul Bourke and Chris Playforth both on 37 and Sel Wegner, having his first
game after five weeks back home, was unlucky to just miss out on count back.
Rick Forrest got it all right at last to win Div B with the best of two
37’s, the other one scored by John Mills. B2 (Bruce McAdam) completed his
week with a third place, to follow his second place at Burapha on Monday. B2
headed three players all with 35.
Paul Bourke.
There were six ‘2’s from Murray Hart
(4th), Kerry Beck (10th), Sugar Ray Handford & Bruce McAdam (12th) and Paul
Greenaway & David Davies (16th).
Finally, our thanks to John Lawton who ran the tournament today so smoothly
even if he did finish last.
Div A (0-14)
1st Murray Hart (13) 39pts
2nd Paul Bourke (9) 37pts
3rd Chris Playforth (10) 37pts
Div B (15+)
1st Rick Forrest (23) 37pts
2nd John Mills (19) 37pts
3rd Bruce McAdam (27) 35pts

Jim, Tom and Nick repel the Vikings
PSC Golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday 15th September Green Valley
A Flight
1st Dave Driscoll (15) 40pts
2nd Kevin Rogers (11) 39pts
3rd JP Maffray (1) 37pts
B Flight
1st Nick Odnoral (17) 36pts
2nd Jim Ferdee (30) 35pts
3rd Eddy Beilby (17) 34pts
Near Pins: No 4 Barry Copestake, No 9 Jum Karagit, No 12 Kevin Rogers, No
16 Don Lehmer
Nick Odnoral.
The premier flight showed why they are called
that this Sunday as big hitting Dave Driscoll fashioned a best on the day 40
points that won him the man of the match honours. His total, however was just a
stroke clear of Aussie ace Kevin Rogers. JP Maffray showed he might be on the
way up as his creditable 37 points closed the flight. Bob ‘Broadmore’ Newell
took the non profitable fourth slot for the second time in the last two Sunday
outings.
The junior flight was led in by every ones favourite Aussie star Nick Odnoral
with a steady even par round. Nick was one shot clear of Jim Ferdee as Eddy ‘the
Eagle’ Beilby had to go to a count back to secure the bronze over the unlucky
Irishman John Heaney.
JP Maffray, Pat Regan, Barry Copestake and Paul Gillam shared the 2’s pot.
Tuesday, Sept. 17, Greenwood C&A - Stableford
A Flight
1st Nick Shaw (17) 41pts
2nd John Stewart (8) 39pts
3rd Mike Jeffreys (17) 38pts
B Flight
1st Jim Reid (24) 46pts
2nd Tom Gorey (18) 43pts
3rd Mick Coughlan (21) 39pts
Jim Reid had one of those days you remember for a long time as he went 10 under
his handicap - an event calculated to happen 1 in every 1,138 rounds. Jim does
not have 1,138 rounds on record with the society but it is certainly in excess
of 250, and that made it easy for the lads to tip their hat to co-title mates
Tom Gorey with a splendid 43 points and A Flight’s top man Nick Shaw’s 41pts.
These lads stopped our red hot society Vikings in their tracks.
Following Jim and Tom up the B Flight podium steps was Mick Coughlan with a
excellent 39 points.
John Stewart took the silver in the senior flight as Mike ‘the Welsh wizard’
Jeffreys rounded out the flight with a very useful 38 points.
John Stewart and Eddy Beilby split the 2’s pot.
Wednesday, Sept. 18, Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Pierre Bietry (16) 34pts
2nd Terry Mangan (14) 32pts
3rd John Stewart (8) 32pts
B Flight
1st Jorn Finnerup (29) 34pts
2nd Nick Shaw (17) 34pts
3rd Jimmy Day (17) 33pts
A good sized field set out for Bangpra in eager anticipation of playing a good
round of golf as things turned out it proved a very difficult task as the course
bared it teeth and the scores suffered accordingly.
Pierre Bietry returned 34 points that gave him top spot in A Flight and a co-man
of the match honors. Co. Wicklow’s favourite son Terry ‘Pork chop’ Mangan and
pay window regular John Stewart were locked in mortal count back on 32 points,
with Terry giving John a red card and gaining the silver.
In B Flight it had been apparent that Ireland’s Jorn Finnerup was rounding into
good form and that trend continued this day as his co-man of the match would
attest, but Jorn still needed a count back verdict over his flight mate and
co-man of the match Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw. Jorn and Nick were one clear of the
tandem of Co. Wicklow man Jimmy ‘good’ Day and Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby.
The hard luck story was surely that ‘the Eagle’ deserved more for his hard
earned 33 points and seemed he did not quite know what had happened, but as
always he remained joyful.
‘The Donkey’ had no reason to hand out prizes for a ‘2’ so it was a rollover to
the following week.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd Soi13/13 near
Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to
the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Rought reigns at Bangpra
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, Sept. 16, Bangpra - Stableford
This was another fun day out with a 1-2-3 team stableford competition plus
the normal game for two divisions with extra technical prizes courtesy of
the rollover kitty. There was a field of 29 players out in nine groups in
the team competition and in our normal stableford competition the equal cut
today was 6-18 and 20+ in division 2.
Alan Bissell.
The course was in excellent condition with
very fast greens and it is a popular venue for all players.
Bryan Rought returned the best score of the day, winning division 1 with 39
points. Still playing off 6, Kari Kuparinen took second place with 35 points
and Martin Grimoldby, with a 4 handicap, was third with 34.
An even par 36 points won division 2 for Alan Bissell while the Canadian boy
Gordon Everingham placed second on 32, and the Bristol lad Bob Poole,
working in China and over here for a couple of months, was third after
beating Rodney on a 14/13 back nine count back, both on 31 points.
Near pins went to Marty Rock, Bryan Rought, Neville Scurrell, Richard Kings
and Bob Poole.
Marty Rock birdied the 8th and Neville Scurrell the 12th to split the ‘2’s
pot in division 1 while in division 2 Bob Poole took the four rollovers for
himself and was a happy chappy.
In the team 1-2-3 event, Bryan Rought, Neville Scurrell and Harry Vincenzi
finished top with 76 points, and Gordon Everingham, Jean Morel and Rune
Aashinen came in second after beating Alan Bissell, Andy Crabb and Eiichi
Matsumoto on a 16/15 back nine count back after both teams returned 68
points each.
Further technical prizes (nearest the pin in 2/3 shots) were won by Martin
Grimoldby, Gordon Everingham, Neville Scurrell, Fred Temminck (2) and Mike
Chatt (2).
John Oxley.
Longest drive awards went to Martin
Grimoldby and Richard Kings.
The competition was enjoyed by all with a different format but upon booking
our next month’s schedule we were informed that with 10/12 groups in the
format we could reserve 6 groups at 8.00 am on the 1st and six groups on the
10th at the same time, or we could all tee off at 11.30, which has been the
same schedule here for the last seven years or even more, we will see you
next May Bangpra!
Wednesday, Sept. 18, The Emerald - Stableford
We had a small turnout today due to the recent inclement weather and also a
minority not enjoying the condition of the course. The ground under repair
had all been marked so our normal I.P.G.C. local rules came into play.
The cut today was 5-16 in division 1 and 17+ in division 2 and the best
score of the day was returned in division 1, with Kari Kuparinen playing off
6 winning with 37 points. In second place was John Oxley with 32 points.
The Welsh boy Curtis Hessler topped division 2 with 34 points and ‘Count
back’ Burnie was second with 30.
There were no ‘2’s today in either division.
Friday, Sept. 20, Eastern Star - Stableford
With heavy overnight rain we made a few phone
calls Friday morning to our members living on the course and also the
management regarding the condition and the predictions for the day. In
between these calls there are another six no goes from the group, and after
the discussions with Eastern Star and some of the lads there we set off.
As we approached the course the outlook over the coast looked better and we
all decide to go ahead with the green fee. In the end we had five groups out
with the cut at 5-16 and 20+ in division 2.
As the first group teed off there were a few spots or rain, but not heavy or
consistent and this lasted for the complete front nine but was not a
problem. There was ‘pick, clean and place’ from the first tee onwards but
the course today was in a playable condition.
Chris De La Mare, playing off 5, won division 1 with 35 points while Marty
Rock was second on 32 and Bill Bertram third with 31 after beating Terry
Madsen on a 19/16 back nine count back.
James Brooks took out division 2 with 33 points and Glyn Evans was second,
beating Iain Walsh on a 16/14 back nine count back after they both came in
with 29 points.
Bill Bertram birdied the 17th to win the rollover ‘2’s pot in division 1 and
there were no claimants in division 2.
Near pins went to Bill Bertram, Kari Kuparinen, Tony Thorne and Iain Walsh,
the latter four-putting for a 5.
It was great to see Georges Faber and Annie back at Siam Cats after a year
-ong break in Luxembourg.

Golfing with a mission
Join the ladies for a fun day out on the golf
course and help raise funds for a worthy cause.
The Women With a Mission charity golf tournament has become a
firm fixture on Pattaya’s golf calendar. Now in its 5th year, this great
event continues to increase in popularity and for the 2nd year running it is
being supported by AustCham Thailand, the local Australian Chamber of
Commerce.
Community and industry support for this tournament has been well received,
GAC Thailand have been a sponsor for 5 tournaments, with Dana Spicer
Thailand, Albatross Logistics, Titan-VNS Group, Inergy Automotive, and
Pattaya Sports Club and Hemaraj Land and Development also sponsoring 4 of
the 5 years.
WWM’s tournament focuses on the enjoyment aspect of the game and providing a
great day out for golfers of all abilities. It is being run in a four-ball
best-ball format, so teams of four are required. However if individuals wish
to enter, then WWM will slot them into a team – a good way to make new
golfing friends.
Phoenix Golf Club has again been chosen as the venue. Its proximity to
Pattaya, and the immaculate fairways and greens, are always a hit with the
players. And this year, the post-tournament dinner and prize giving will be
held at Phoenix rather than a separate venue.
WWM sponsored teacher Nim with a WWM volunteer
Hedie, and some of the children from the Baan Kru Boonchoo Centre.
The date is Friday 18 October and it will be a shotgun start at midday.
Golfers are requested to arrive by 1100 am for registration and receive
their “goody bag”. The player fee of B3,500 (B14,000 per team) includes
green fee and caddy fee, the bag of “goodies”, and a tournament golf shirt.
Dinner, together with free-flow beer and wine, and prizes are all part of
this great package. Note the price does not include cart hire or caddy tip.
WWM is a group of three local expatriate ladies (two Australian and one
American) who, for years, have worked hard to assist underprivileged
children in Thailand. They first formed to help child survivors of the
tsunami in 2004 and have been providing education and sustenance to children
in the Thai-Burma border refugee camps, and more recently their focus has
been on improving the remedial training for autistic children at the Baan
Kru Boonchoo Centre for special children in Rayong.
Rather than BKBC just being a child care center, WWM are funding training
for the teachers, have hired a full-time specialist teacher, arranged for
speech and physical therapy, and provided equipment designed for disabled
children. They have given BKBC a two-year commitment to help create a proper
Learning Center and make a true difference in the lives of these children.
So, for a small additional cost over your usual round of weekly golf, you
get a generous goody bag, a free Fenix golf shirt, free dinner and drinks
and great prizes. On top of that, you are helping truly under-privileged
children in Thailand towards a better life. All proceeds from these events
go direct to the nourishment, education and care programs run by WWM and
their loyal band of supporters.
Get hold of three of your “mates” and sign up now. Note that it is open for
both men and women golfers. Teams can be same-sex or mixed, whatever is your
preference.

Bramley doubles
up for the week
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
There is no doubting who was the golfer of the week at the TRGG this
past week, it was that man with the funny grip and I am not talking about
the Freemasons. Neil Bramley holds the golf club with the reverse grip and
it is fascinating to watch him swing and power the ball into the middle of
another fairway. He did it so well this week he won two of the three
competitions played.
Monday, Sept. 16, Crystal Bay -
Stableford
On Monday we drove through rain laden skies to arrive at Crystal Bay to play
the C and B courses and all of us expected to get a good soaking. Amazingly
the rain abated and most if not all of us had an enjoyable round.
Neil Bramley - winner at Crystal
Bay and Khao Kheow.
Neil Bramley held off the rest of the field and finished
in the number one slot while Michael Maguire, a playing partner of mine,
came racing through on the rails to snatch second place.
Young David Booth, nice haircut David, asked to be given a special mention
for finishing in third place, edging out Fergus Brennan and me, Andy Rich,
of the places on count back. So, well done David - really great effort
getting the better of two poor old age pensioners! Next time pick on someone
your own age.
1st Neil Bramley (9) 34pts
2nd Michael Maguire (18) 33pts
3rd David Booth (15) 32pts
Tuesday, Sept. 17, Greenwood - Stableford
It was off to Greenwood on Tuesday to play the C and A courses
and it was that wily oriental gentleman Yaku Takasaka who played an
inscrutable round of golf to take over number one in the charts.
Aussie Derek Thorogood, looking lean and mean, took second place and young
David Booth made it into third place for the second day running, this time
edging out equally young Neil Bramley on count back (glad you took my advice
David on picking on someone of your own age).
1st Yaku Takasaka (12) 35pts
2nd Derek Thorogood (16) 34pts
3rd David Booth (15) 32pts
Thursday, Sept. 19, Phoenix - Stableford
Our usual Thursday venue at Phoenix was off the agenda this week
so it was Khao Kheow A and B course that stepped into the breach.
Neil Bramley rounded off his excellent week with another win, beating
‘Father’ Ted Senior into second place, who in turn edged out Fergus Brennan
into third but only after a count back. Poor old Fergus, losing out twice
this week on count back.
1st Neil Bramley (9) 34pts
2nd Ted Senior (14) 33pts
3rd Fergus Brennan (13) 33pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to
play a round of golf with the TRGG, please phone Fergus Brennan on 086 056
7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the
weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.

A reprise of wet, wet, wet
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, Sept. 16, Eastern Star -
Stableford
CSS 73
1st Kevin Townsend (12) 36pts
2nd Frank Dunstan (27) 33pts
3rd Phil Groves (8) 32pts
4th Terry Hodgkiss (23) 31pts
5th Brian Libbey (9) 30pts
Yet another week of wet weather and sodden course started hopefully at
Eastern Star where the nearly 6,600 yard course was always going to be a
tough test of endurance as much as golf prowess.
Kevin Townsend.
Following heavy overnight rain, but thankfully
rainless by the morning, more than the expected numbers turned out
looking forward to a reasonably priced day of golf followed by a few wet
ones just down the road.
Kevin Townsend proved to be the most consistent on the day, although he
managed just two points over the last three holes as the effort to slog
it around an extremely long course in the conditions finally took its
toll. But even par was a good result in the end as the CSS went out to
73 for the day and was certainly enough to win with the nearest
contender three back.
Frank Dunstan was that person in second place as he once again showed
that with a little more tuition and practice he will soon be back down
at the level of handicap where he and everyone else wants to see him.
Phil Groves is always one of the usual suspects no matter what the
conditions and however difficult the course, and again he proved the
rule with a solid third placement following a curate’s egg of a round
that included a few threes but too many ones and zeros to be in serious
contention.
Terry Hodgkiss and Brian Libbey at either ends of the handicap scale
rounded out the podium winners in fourth and fifth places, with what in
the circumstances were reasonable returns.
Once again there were no 2’s in the second division but Phil Groves and
Kevin Townsend shared the first division pool.
Before the presentations were made there was a welcome back for Andre
Holmem.
Wednesday, Sept. 18, Bangpra - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Phil Groves (8) 32pts
2nd Mike Dabanovich (12) 31pts
3rd John Carlin (15) 30pts
4th Trevor Schirmer (12) 29pts
5th Kevin Townsend (12) 28pts
Phil Groves.
Once gain the intrepid group faced the daunting
prospect of Bangpra in wet conditions, which on arrival at the course
turned out to be even more onerous as the recent wet weather had
prevented a lot of mowing, especially parts of the rough which were in
places almost unplayable. So there was a more than usual definite
advantage to keeping it on the “shorter stuff” as the end results
showed, with all of the top places being taken by what would normally be
first division players as the higher handicappers struggled to get to
terms with the course on the day.
Added to the difficult conditions, the green keepers had not helped as
they had positioned the tee markers well to the rear on almost every tee
which ensured that the scores would not trouble the record keepers and
no doubt assisted in raising the CSS to 75 and becoming non- counting in
the process.
Phil Groves had the best of the day, returning a four-over card for the
second time in a row but this time it was good enough to take the top
honours, albeit by a single point but on this occasion there were fewer
three-pointers and just a single zero showing during a much more
consistent round.
Mike Dabanovich slipped into second spot having started well on the
first three but the round slipped away, denying him a win in his last
outing before returning to the Middle East.
John Carlin, who has recently returned to Pattaya from Sydney - this
time to take up permanent residence, performed well to claim third place
just one point further back.
Trevor Schirmer slipped onto the podium after missing out recently, with
Monday’s winner Kevin Townsend locking up the final spot.
One of the highlights of the day was an exhibition of catapult use by
one of the caddies who was a dab hand at firing on the run at the
marauding wildlife as they attempted to raid the golf carts for anything
edible. She obviously had passed the FBI Hand Made Weapons Course
training with flying colours.
There were no 2’s in either division which was not very surprising as
the shortest of the par threes was the 175 yards twelfth over water into
wind but at least the 17th over the pond had been reduced to 190 yards.
Friday, Sept. 20, Treasure Hill - Stableford
With the potential field decimated by the weather, which had
seen it rain throughout the night followed by sharp intermittent showers
in the morning, the numbers prepared to make the journey up the 321 were
too few to hold any meaningful competition but a few hardy souls
ventured out to the course only to find it inundated, with a few holes
undergoing serious renovation, and continuous light rain during the
front nine confirmed that it had been a good decision.
Even playing from the yellow tees, which had been thoughtfully placed
close to the whites presumably to save too much walking, the end results
did not make for very pretty reading. But in any event there was a huge
pot in the second division 2’s pool to be won, but nobody threatened the
greens except on the very short 100 yards sixth, where Alan Richardson
unfortunately just failed to read the break from two feet, which if he
had succeeded would have set him up for his return to the Philippines,
if not for the rest of the year certainly for a couple of months.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact
mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13,
between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is
arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should
be there by 8.15 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you
wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web
site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Magic Murray
The Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
What of the alternatives
following a rain cancellation? Send the lass back to the off-licence of
course.
The new week began for the Pattaya Golf Society on
Monday, 16th September, with a trip to a virtually empty Green Valley to
play a stableford competition on the course which was in splendid
condition, if a little soft from recent heavy rains. The greens needed a
roll but still retained a little pace however and putting was a very
precise requirement.
Scores were generally quite good with Ken Grimes hauling Greg Gawron
back to share second place with 35 points, leaving Murray Edwards way
ahead with 39 points for his maiden win with the group. All the hours on
the range are working well for Murray and there will be more good rounds
to come as the year progresses.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and with Tony Thorne taking Rabbi’s free beer
for the non-winners the curtain was drawn on another fine day of golf
with the PGS.
A lack of entries and forty eight hours of steady rain cut short the
golf this week as we cancelled on Wednesday, with only five signed up
for the trip to Royal Lakeside and Friday when Mountain Shadow suggested
we cancel because the course was very wet and carts were ill advised.

Bruce blitzes Burapha
PSC golf from The Caddyshack
Clive Bruce.
Monday, Sept. 16, Mountain Shadow -
Stableford
A small group made the trip to Mountain Shadow on Monday and Jim
McGovern, playing off a 16 handicap, came in first with 32 points on a
count back over Barry Pussel (H/cap 5).
Wednesday, Sept. 18, Burapha - Stableford
Another limited turnout of players took on
the challenge of Burapha on Wednesday with Clive Bruce having a great
round. Clive (10) returned 43 points for the win ahead of Derek Wilkin
(20) in second with 39 points.
Friday, Sept. 20, Green Valley - Stableford
Twelve golfers signed up for Green Valley on
Friday and the inclement weather certainly affected the scoring there.
Three players were tied on 34 points at the top of the leader board with
Robert Marsh (25) taking the win on count back over Ben Findon (20) in
second and Magnus Johansson (12) third.
Note: The Caddyshack is located on Soi 17 off 3rd Road or Soi 8 off
Thepprasit. All golfers are welcome and reservations can be made at 081

A familiar face in the winner’s enclosure
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Tuesday’s top three with one of
Bert’s finest.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Sept. 17, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
Well yes, as you ask, it did rain, and although Pleasant
Valley did not turn into Pleasant Swamp like it used to, it was still soggy and
carts were not allowed on the fairways. The sky was always dark and there is
nothing worse in Thailand than that constant drizzle that wets one through, and
that hot sun that turns the drizzle into a hot humid day.
That is of course unless, when the carts are not allowed onto the fairway, the
paths are on the left and you as a right hander develop a big slice. That walk
from the cart to the ball across a wet fairway with the wrong club can be a
pain. And at the end of the round you wonder why you ever wanted a cart in the
first place.
The answer is that at least you get the odd sit down. And as all know, there are
days when you need to sit down. Mind, ten years ago I used to consider the
sanity of those who took a cart, now I know why. It is called the passing of the
years, although we do have a lot of players over 70 who walk. Brave men!
Getting back to the golf, the general condition of the course was not too bad,
but oh those greens, if there are slower greens anywhere in the Eastern Seaboard
I have yet to find them. And with it raining very few puts actually made the
hole, that is first time. But it is very picturesque here.
Round over it was a wet and cold crew that got into the showers. Still that
warmed us up, and also I am told by the other golfers, the cheerful staff
helped. There is nothing damps sales more than a lack of a smile. Well done the
staff.
So it was back to Bert’s and the results soon came up. The winner on the day was
guess who? Just a clue, he had a hole in one the day before. So for a change!
the winner was Mashi Kaneta with 37 points ahead of Mark West in second with 35
points. In third was Graham Buckingham with 34 points ahead of Derek Brook in
fourth with 33 points. T.T.F.N.

Khao Kheow B returns
PSC golf from Siam Country Resort
Khao Kheow participants Joel,
Jeff & Willem.
Tuesday, Sept. 17, Khao Kheow -
Stableford
Tuesday was a visit to Khao Kheow, and as the headline suggests it was the
first time we had the opportunity to play the B course following its
successful renovation. On this day it was combined with the A-nine, which is
improving in condition also.
The renovated B layout was certainly to Jeff Wylie’s (H/cap 5) liking as he
compiled a solid 21 points after a comparatively dismal 15 on the A9, to
sign for 36 in total. He was followed up the podium steps by Owen Walkley
(14) with 32 points, after he also struggled to a mere 14 on the A course.
Willem Lasonder showed that it was not the course but the player on the
A-nine as he had 21 points before fading on the inward B holes.
Near pins went to Martin, Willem & Jeff.
Thursday, Sept. 19, Greenwood - Stableford
Thursday was another poor turnout to a Greenwood
Sports Day, with the C & A courses our test, which was in good condition,
and I consider the best combo at this venue. So we had insufficient players
for a formal comp on this day, although we did have some friendly
competition between Jeff & Willem for the skins prizes.
Disappointingly inclement weather led to the cancellation of the PSC Monthly
Tournament scheduled for Pattana on Friday.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam Country
Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after 50
metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along. Golf from here
is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the Resort hosting prompt
presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL
golfers, including ladies & seniors who have opted for the “Silver” tee
option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you
there, cheers & good golfing!
Sportsmanship – Golf’s Best?
Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin shake hands
as the walk off the 18th green during the 1969 Ryder Cup at Royal
Birkdale, northwest England.
Last week’s column attempted to highlight differences between how
golfers, professional or amateur, respect the rules of their game
compared to how athletes of other major codes regard theirs. Among the
points raised was the notion that because golf requires players to be
their own referee, the amount of respect shown between competing players
as well as to the game’s core ethics, is greater than the equivalent in
other sports.
This hypothesis led me to search for examples of what are considered
acts of exemplary sportsmanship. One that stood out, as regards both
merit and the printed word, involved the 1969 Ryder Cup played at Royal
Birkdale Golf Club, England.
Back then the contest was still between the US and Britain & Ireland
(Team Europe came ten years later). With 12 wins from the previous 13
matches, American golf was very much in the ascendency. This year
though, the British & Irish team was regarded as the strongest for some
years with Captain Eric Brown confident of victory on home soil. This
confidence did not extend to good sportsmanship, however, as he
instructed his players to take every advantage possible, including not
helping their opponents look for balls lost in the rough. This set the
tone for an ill-tempered, spat-riddled affair.
Notwithstanding, the match developed into the best contest in years,
with more than half of the 32 matches (as was played back then) going to
the final hole. It was fitting therefore, that come the final day and
with just the one game remaining, the scores were dead-level. It was
also fitting that the contestants in this last match were arguably the
two best players either side of the Atlantic – Britain’s Tony Jacklin
and the USA’s Jack Nicklaus.
This last match had been close from the outset, with neither player
enjoying more than a one-shot lead at any point. Nicklaus won the 16th
to go 1-up. Jacklin holed a 50-footer on 17 to get back to square. The
atmosphere was building to a crescendo as the contestants teed off the
last. With both balls safely on the fairway, Nicklaus caught up with his
opponent and asked him how he was feeling?
“Petrified,” Jacklin admitted.
Nicklaus, who by this stage in his career had won six majors, responded,
“If it’s any consolation, I feel exactly the same.”
The climax to three days of intense golf was set to be played out in a
packed cauldron-like atmosphere, as both golfers reached the 18th green
in regulation. Jacklin, who was away, putted from 25-feet and stood
transfixed as his ball finished dead on line, but a little over 2-feet
short. He marked.
Nicklaus was later to tell of the adrenalin he felt surging through his
veins as he lined up his putt for the win. It missed, leaving him with a
very testing 4-foot return. The holder of six majors later admitted to
not having previously experienced more pressure over a single putt.
Notwithstanding, he drilled his ball into the centre of the cup.
Jacklin now faced a putt to halve the match as well as the tie. Whilst a
length of 2-foot plus is not great, the circumstances were the most
nerve-wracking he would ever face. What happens next is what this story
is all about.
After picking his ball out of the hole, Nicklaus reached over and picked
up his opponent’s marker, thus conceding the putt. He walked up to
Jacklin and offered his hand, explaining, “I don’t think you would have
missed that putt, but in these circumstances, I would never give you the
opportunity.”
Both golfers left the green, an arm around the other’s shoulder, to
sustained applause from the crowd. The overall score read 16-16; the
first tie in Ryder Cup history.
Jacklin was later to refer to Nicklaus’s action as “the greatest single
sporting gesture in golf,” but not everyone saw it that way. American
captain Sam Snead was one, “It was ridiculous to give him that putt. We
went over there to win, not to be good old boys.” Then president of the
USPGA, Leo Fraser, appeared to side with Nicklaus when he graciously
agreed to both nations sharing the trophy for a year apiece.
Eighteen years later the Americans were defeated on home soil, for the
first time, after Larry Nelson graciously conceded a 2-foot putt to
Bernhard Langer. The captains that year were Nicklaus and Jacklin.
That Jack Nicklaus is regarded as the greatest golfer to have ever
played the game is sometimes disputed. What is not is that his conduct,
whether winning or losing, was always the epitome of great
sportsmanship. That and his 18 majors is what make him the greatest –
something that any wannabe would do well to remember.
Winning is good. Winning well is better.
Happy golfing,
Golfnutter

An ace in the hole for Mashi
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Mashi’s name goes onto the Bunker Boys Hall of Fame
board.
Monday, Sept. 16, Phoenix (Mountain & Lakes) - Medal
There are lots of rumours making the rounds of Pattaya golf
circles about the changes being implemented by the new owners of Phoenix, so
we set off to the course anticipating some problems. Our day got off to an
inauspicious start as the staff on reception informed us that the green fee
was 300 baht more than that we’d agreed when making the booking, but
eventually we were able to sort that out with the assistance of two of our
players who are members of the course.
We managed to tee off on schedule after being messed around by an aggressive
starter, who made us wait at the clubhouse staring at a vacant first tee, as
the group scheduled ahead of us failed to show up. Rumours of golf bags
being searched for illicit food items (i.e. anything brought in from outside
the course) proved to be unfounded, but the management have instituted a
voucher system (minimum charge 100 baht, no refunds and valid only on the
day of purchase) for all purchases made from the kiosks on the course – a
bit pricey if you only intend to buy water!
As we progressed through the outward nine it was noticeable that a number of
staff (who we originally thought were marshalls) were following us around
the course in golf buggies. Only when we overheard one of these guys asking
our caddies if they’d seen us consuming any illicit food or drinks, did we
realize what their true purpose was.
Phoenix has never been known for its good customer relations, but the
atmosphere now is distinctly unwelcoming, and this will be our last visit
here until the situation improves. That seems unlikely in the near future,
since compulsory buggies and further increases in the cost of green fees
will be introduced from November onwards.
On the golfing front, Colin Greig rediscovered his winning form ahead of
Mashi Kaneta, who took second place on a count back ahead of Tore Eliassen.
The highlight of the day was provided by Mashi Kaneta who scored a hole in
one on the par three second hole on the Lakes nine. At the presentation, the
drinks flowed freely as Mashi generously shared his good fortune with his
fellow competitors.
Only two near pins were claimed, one by Ken Young and the other was Mashi’s
hole in one.
1st Colin Greig (9) net 74
2nd Mashi Kaneta (14) net 76
3rd Tore Eliassen (14) net 76
Wednesday, Sept. 18, Bangpra – Stableford
Fourteen golfers today turned out today to tackle the popular Bangpra course
under heavily overcast skies, but with the reassurance from the local
weather forecast which stated there was zero percent chance of rain.
We tee’d off on schedule but the pace of play, particularly over the outward
nine, was slow as we were following another large group of local golfers.
Colin Greig continued where he left off on Monday, scoring 22 points on the
front nine, and eventually coming back to the clubhouse with a winning total
of 38 points.
We were welcoming back Alan Freeman for a brief visit and he played the
outward nine in level par, but faded slightly on the inward nine, taking
second place on a count back ahead of Takeshi Hakozaki.
Just to prove you can never believe any weather forecast (or for that matter
any rumour) in Pattaya, the final three holes were played in steady but
light drizzle.
The par three holes were once again playing long, but two of our higher
handicap golfers, Dave Keats and Reg Smart, both managed to produce great
shots to claim rare near pin prizes.
1st Colin Greig (9) 38pts
2nd Alan Freeman (3) 34pts
3rd Takeshi Hakozaki (12) 34pts
Near Pins: Alan Freeman, Dave Keats, Duncan Lee and Reg Smart.
Friday, Sept,
Pleasant Valley – Stableford
It wasn’t a day for the faint hearted today, with heavy rain
overnight and persistent drizzle still falling in the morning. Our small
group of die-hard golfers assembled at The Ranch to learn that the PSC
tournament scheduled for today at Pattana had been cancelled, but a quick
call to the Pleasant Valley course assured us that the course was open and
playable.
We set off up the 7 motorway in heavy rain, which was still falling when we
reached the course, but after a ten minute wait we decided it was easing,
and we made the decision to tee off in light drizzle. There were only four
other golfers on the course, but later in the day when we started the back
nine other fair weather golfers started to appear.
We made the inevitable decision to play winter rules and the fairways had
plenty of additional water hazards, and the greens were saturated but
playable. The drizzle persisted throughout the outward nine, but then
conditions improved and the inward nine was played in cool dry conditions,
although the fairways were still soggy.
Geoff Parker coped with the difficult conditions better than the rest, with
Colin Greig taking second place on a count back ahead of Mashi Kaneta.
Tony Robbins struggled on the front nine, but almost scored the second ace
of the week on the 17th hole, with his tee shot heading straight for the
pin, but coming to rest twelve inches short.
Only three near pins were claimed, by Geoff Parker, Colin Greig and Tony
Robbins.
1st Geoff Parker (14) 34pts
2nd Colin Greig (9) 33pts
3rd Mashi Kaneta (14) 33pts
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play out of
The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and almost
opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but
competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new
players are always welcome. Contact “Buff” on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663

Bell takes victory at Green Valley
The Billabong Bar Golf Society
(Left-right): Helmut, Martin
Hayes, and Jim Bell.
Wednesday, Sept. 18, Green Valley -
Stableford
Green Valley, our usual venue for Wednesday, was in
grand condition today considering the amount of recent rain and the number
of golfers that play on it. Some of the greens may have been a little on the
slow side but all in all a good day was had by all.
There were some good scores in from the nine groups that played as there was
no rain or even the threat of any. In the winner’s circle were Helmut in
fourth place with 36 points, third with 37 points was Martin Hayes, second
came Ian Heddle, also with 37, and taking first place was Jim Bell with 39
points.
There were four ‘2’s coming from Brian Maddox, Barry Copestake, Ian Heddle
and Helmut Hebstreit.
Friday, Sept. 20, The Emerald - Stableford
It was a very depleted field today as the rain
kept most of the players in bed, however there were 2 groups of intrepid
golfers who started out at Emerald in a light rain that kept going all day,
but it wasn’t enough to get you really wet through.
Playing with JJ Harney is always a pleasure at any time but this day he was
in full Irish form; every time his playing partner missed a very short putt
he was right at her poor little lady. He was heard to say that her husband
must give her too much money. Anyway, even taking all the drama into
consideration JJ came third but there was no third prize today only first
and second - and second was taken by Owen Walkley with 35 points. First
place went to Capt Bob, also with 35 but winning on a count back.
As there were no ‘2’s it was a bell ring back at the bar.
Note: The Billabong is situated just off Siam Country Club Road looking
straight down Lake Mabprachan. If you are looking for a game, call Bob on
082 204 3411, all golfers made welcome.

Hanson sails to victory at Navy
PSC golf from Café Kronborg
Niels Hansen.
Monday, Sept. 16, Plutaluang E & S –
Stableford
1st Niels Hansen (14) 33pts
2nd Jon Swanson (18) 31pts
3rd Dave Richardson (23) 22pts
It was off to Plutaluang today to play the East and South layouts and we tee
off under cloudy skies and cool conditions. The course was in very good
shape and dry despite the rain on Sunday, but from the white tees it played
very long as reflected in the scores.
The course was not busy so it only took 3 hours and 45 minutes to get around
and back in the clubhouse we welcomed back Kevin Dinan, just returned from
Ireland.
Niels Hansen was the winner today with 33 points ahead of Jon Swanson in
second on 31 and Dave Richardson a distant third with a paltry 22 points.
Jay Burns smokes ‘em with a 68 off the stick
PSC golf from The Golf Club
Smokin’ Jay Burns back at The

Monday, Sept. 16, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
1st Jay Burns (0) 40pts
2nd Jimmy Dundon (15) 39pts
T3rd Tate Akifumi (17) 37pts
T3rd Ron Robertson (28) 37pts
Wow! We all knew that Jay Burns is a “real” golfer. We have played with him
a lot over the last decade or so. Jay is always in the frame and in the
game, but you would expect that from a Southern Gentleman who plays off
scratch. Today, Jay woke up on the right side of bed (the side that the Gods
of Golf like) and smoked the field with a 68 off the stick at Green Valley.
It sure must be nice to have the skills that would get you to the point
where you would have some degree of mastery on a golf course. What a dream
come true! Jay deserves all credit for a masterful round of golf, and the
best score off the stick so far this year for The Golf Club.
Tuesday, Sept. 17, Khao Kheow (yellow tees) – Stableford
1st Jay Burns (0) 35pts
2nd John Pierrel (11) 31pts
3rd Phil Smedley (9) 30pts
When you’re hot, you’re hot! Smokin’ Jay Burns was once again on top of the
world! We all know how tough a course Khao Kheow can be, and today there
were no golfers to even shoot their handicap. Jay was closest, being just
one shot off and took the crown for today’s comp.
The travelling golfer John Pierrel came in second with 31 points and our
fearless Golf Captain Phil Smedley has finally returned from Oz to take
third on 30 Stableford points. Good goin’ guys, it’s a jungle out there!
Thursday, Sept. 19, Burapha (white tees) – Stableford
Time for another trip to the monkey course, but this time there
was no monkey business as our pal Aki stormed off with a tremendous 40
points to clear the field by 3 points. Shooting a 40 anywhere is great
going, so congrats to Aki for achieving this on one of the tougher tracks in
Pattaya. The weather treated us well, as September is usually the month of
highest rainfall.
Second place was shared on 37 points and both golfers were playing off 11
handicap. Phil Williams and Dan Willetts had very similar rounds of golf and
turned in 37’s on this tricky golf course. Well played lads and thanks for
joining us for another week of great golf in Pattaya, the home of golf in
Thailand!
1st Tate “Aki” Akifume (17) 40pts
T2nd Phil Williams (11) 37pts
T2nd Dan Willetts (11) 37pts
Heads up! We have Kabinburi scheduled for our October Road Trip, leaving on

2 Chonburi youths through to Chang tennis tournament finals
Kenthkan Ngamson (center) poses for a photo
with his parents after winning the mens singles U 18 qualifier in
Pattaya.
Warunya Thongrod
Two young Chonburi based tennis players booked berths at the finals of
the 7th Chang Lawn Tennis Skills Development Tournament after beating
Bangkok-area opponents at the Central Region semifinals held in Pattaya.
Kenthkan Ngamson defeated Leo Withuthien of Bangkok 6-2, 6-1 in the boys
17-18 age bracket and Panthita Sakulmalaithong beat Nitchakan Pattanakas
of Samut Prakan in the girls 11-12 age group by a score of 5-3, 5-3, in
the qualifier held at the Pattaya Inter Tennis Club in Nongprue.
Jirasak Saksansin, a senior manager of TOT’s Pattaya office, handed out
trophies to the boys and girls in age brackets ranging from 8, 10, 12,
16 and 18 years old. The Sept. 14-16 tournament was operated by the Lawn
Tennis Association of Thailand with the aim of building sports skills
among Thai youths.
“I believe that after children have been steered to the first step,
there has to be additional levels of competition for them to experience
to enable them to develop into international standard sportsmen and
women,” said tournament manager Chantra Thongbooncharoen.
Jirasak Saksansin (left), Senior Manager of TOT
Pattaya, presents an award to Manita Bussarakhomvisit, the winner of the
female single U 18 title.
The winners will now go on to participate in the Lawn Tennis Master’s
round to be held in November in Bangkok.
In the other age brackets, Wissarut Anuwongworawet of Chacherngsao won
the boys 13-16 group by besting Itch Meesommont of Bangkok in the first
set 6-2 and Itch forfeiting the second set.
Chathaburi’s Chaniporn Saisa-ad beat Ranchida Na Nakhorn from Samut
Prakan in the girls 13-16 bracket 6-2, 6-2 while her neighbor
Kamolchanok Saiweaw lost to Bangkok’s Samcha Aurungroj in the girls
under-8 category.
All other brackets were contested by youths from outside the Chonburi
region.
Kenthkan Ngamson hits a return to Leo
Withuthien in the men’s U 18 final.

Seventh seed Nieminen upset by Sijsling at Thailand Open
Spain’s Feliciano Lopez hits a
forehand against Laslo Djere of Serbia during the first round of the 2013
Thailand Open tennis tournament in Bangkok, Monday, Sept. 23.
World #75 Igor Sijsling of the Netherlands upset #7 seed
Jarkko Nieminen of Finland to set up an all-Dutch clash against Robin Haase in
the second round of the Thailand Open 2013 in Bangkok.
Sijsling won in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (2) on Monday, firing 8 aces to
Nieminen’s one and won a staggering 94 percent of his first service points.
The Dutchman broke his opponent twice - in the fifth and ninth games - to take
the first set 6-3.
Nieminen fought back, breaking Sijsling early in the third game of the second
set and took a 3-1 lead. The match appeared headed for a decider had the Finn
not let slip his advantage in the crucial tenth game as he was broken on his
third break point.
Sijsling consolidated the break, holding his next service game that included two
aces, to take the match to a tiebreaker. The Dutchman jumped to a 5-0 lead in
the tiebreaker and won it 7-2.
In the first round match that followed, #6 seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain won his
first match in Bangkok after storming past 556th-ranked Serbian Laslo Djere in
straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Lopez had lost in the opening round in all three
previous visits to the event. The Spaniard won 80 percent of points on his serve
and did not face a break point in the match.
The tournament’s top seeds, Thomas Berdych and Richard Gasquet were due to
appear later in the week after being given byes in the first round. Scotland’s
Andy Murray was forced to withdraw from the tournament last week after he
underwent surgery on a long standing back injury.
Tickets for the tournament can be obtained at www. thailandopen.org.

‘Dolphins’ defeat Chainat
to pull clear of the drop
Pattaya United’s Marian Juhas
(center) climbs high above the Chainat defence to head home a corner kick and
give his team a 1-0 lead in their Thai Premier League fixture at the Nongprue
Stadium in Pattaya, Sunday, Sept. 22. (Photo courtesy Pattaya United FC)
Pattaya United put clear daylight between themselves and the
teams currently occupying the relegation zone with an emphatic 3-0 win over
Chainat FC at the Nongprue Stadium last Sunday.
After fellow strugglers Chiang Rai had secured a surprising 4-2 away victory at
BEC on Saturday, the pressure was on the teams above them to respond likewise
and United did so in a style all too rarely witnessed by Dolphin fans this
season.
The hosts opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, Slovakian centre-half Marian
Juhas rising above a static Chainat defence to head in a corner kick, and the
home team would double the lead before the break as Obinna Ajoku was put in the
clear by Jinta Phanuwat in the 40th minute and the Nigerian striker smashed the
ball into the back of the net after seeing his first effort well saved by the
visiting keeper.
As the rain began to come down in torrents, the game turned more niggardly in
the second half with both teams guilty of committing a series of fouls. United
eventually sealed the match and the vital three points in the 77th minute as
Jira Charoernsuk rounded the Chainat keeper and coolly dispatched the ball into
the far corner of the net.
There was still time for more drama as the visitors first had an injury time
goal disallowed for offside and then saw one of their players dismissed for a
second bookable offence.
United fans celebrate a vital
victory for their team. (Photo courtesy Pattaya United FC)
The win lifts Pattaya to 13th place in the standings, their
highest position in the league for some months although the teams below United
all have games in hand. With just four matches remaining, the Dolphins probably
need two more wins to secure their Premier League status for next season. The
crucial match could come on Oct. 27 when United host Chiang Rai at the Nongprue
Stadium. Before then, United have a home fixture against Songkhla on Oct. 6 and
then travel to face league leaders Buriram on Oct. 20.
