Young in the winner’s circle at last

PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch

Monday, June 17, Bangpra – Stableford
Sixteen golfers today for our visit to the popular “monkey” course, on a bright and breezy day. The course was relatively quiet, and we were able to tee off on schedule, but progress was slow due to a four-ball ahead of us which seemed intent on getting their full money’s worth. I wonder if some players realize how frustrating it can be for the group behind, when they sit down at every drinks station, rising from their seats at the exact instant that the following group walks off the preceding green!
Nothing however, can detract from the pleasure playing a tough and demanding course which is currently in excellent condition, but most players found points difficult to come by.

Ken Young celebrates his maiden win of the year.

Lee Butler made a successful return after a three week hiatus, scoring 22 points on the front nine, but faded a little on the inward nine and was almost caught by Geoff Parker (20 points on the back nine). There was a three-way tie on 30 points for the third and fourth places, with Barry Murnin being the unlucky player to miss out on a podium prize.
1st Lee Butler (17) 38pts
2nd Geoff Parker (15) 35pts
3rd Tony Robbins (14) 30pts
4th Gerry Cooney (14) 30pts
The tees on all the par three’s were in their back positions today, and this coupled with the breeze meant they were playing very long. Most players agreed that the 17th hole (which was marked as 209 yards on the tee) was actually playing nearer to 220 yards into the breeze. Only two near pin prizes were claimed: Paul Corner (2nd hole) and Geoff Parker (8th hole).

Wednesday, June 19, Burapha – Stableford

Another good low season turnout of 17 golfers today and we were allocated the unusual combination of B and C courses. The weather was bright and breezy again and we were able to tee off on schedule even though the course was quite busy.
We welcomed back Geoff Hart on his return from a long visit to U.K., but unfortunately he was forced to cut short his round after nine holes with stomach problems - must be all that healthy English food he’s been living on for the past couple of months.
The fairways and greens here are in great condition, but the premium is for straight hitting and any shot straying from the short grass is likely to find some extremely punishing rough. It’s fair to say that Burapha is a genuine championship course and no golfer managed to play to his handicap on the day, only Geoff Parker came close, scoring 35 points to comfortably win the honours, four points clear of the field.
Lee Butler took second place on a count back ahead of John Graham. John is usually one of the best putters in the group, but today he had a tough day with the short stick, and even finishing with a single putt for par on the 18th green, wasn’t enough to compensate for his frustrating day.
A special mention is due for Dave Keats who picked up his first near pin prize of the year, hitting a great shot on the short par three third hole on the B course.
1st Geoff Parker (15) 35pts
2nd Lee Butler (17) 31pts
3rd John Graham (10) 31pts
4th Neil Griffin (22) 30pts
Near Pins: Dave Keats, Lee Butler and Paul Corner

Friday, June 21, Plutuluang – Stableford

A great start to the day at The Ranch, when John Graham donated his recently won KPK voucher to provide free bacon sandwiches to all the golfers. Suitably satiated, our group of 17 golfers set off down the Sukhumvit road under bright breezy skies.
We were allocated the East and South courses and tee’d off on schedule, with the first three-ball soon disappearing off into the distance. The Navy course is certainly one of the most scenic in the area and is currently in as good a condition as anyone can remember, although as always the greens were slow.
Neil Griffin and Skinny Newton were in fine form, particularly when they discovered (on the first tee) that cans of Carlsberg beer were on sale at 50 baht! The round progressed smoothly and the first groups were back in the clubhouse in well under four hours, to enjoy the fine food also available at very reasonable prices.
Geoff Hart was making a quick return after being taken ill on Wednesday, but decided to take an early dip on the 11th hole whilst trying to retrieve Reg Smart’s ball from the stream – so much for doing good turns, as the rest of the group were rolling around in laughter.
Paul Corner was playing his final game before returning home, but narrowly missed out on first place, being beaten on a count back by Ken Young. Dave Keats made a welcome return to form, also scoring 35 points, to take third place ahead of Neil Griffin.
1st Ken Young (27) 35pts
2nd Paul Corner (14) 35pts
3rd Dave Keats (32) 35pts
4th Neil Griffin (23) 34pts
Near Pins: Barry Murnin, Geoff Hart, Gerry Cooney and Paul Corner.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new players are always welcome. Contact “Buff” on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for all enquiries. You can find all the news, schedules and results on our website at www.bunkersociety.com

Marsden has a memorable week

The Billabong Bar Golf Society

Monday, June 17, Pleasant Valley - Stableford
Pleasant Valley was our venue today and despite all the recent rain the course was surprisingly dry: carts were allowed on fairways no problem and apart from the greens being sanded and cored recently and the bunkers not being maintained at all it was a pleasant day out, not too hot with a bit of cloud cover.

Bill Marsden.

I think next time back we will have a look at the bunkers before we start and if they are in the same condition they will be played as GUR. Wake up management - get your green staff on the game.
The scores were very good and yes there were some ‘2’’s today. Taking third place was John Aylott with 36 points while two points better in second was George Barrie, just losing a count back for top spot to Bill Marsden whose round included two blobs.
John Player and Martin Keightley each recorded a ‘2’ and George Barrie got the double, prompting him to ring the bell back at the bar. Well done mate!
Wednesday, June 19, Green Valley - Stableford
Our normal venue of Green valley today and the weather stayed fine. The course was in great condition and the greens were fast so everything was set for a great day out in the fresh air.
We welcomed back Scott Eaton and Les Niko over from Australia and welcomed Craig Wheeler and Bernie Stafford for their first games with the Billabong.
Bill Marsden, a man successfully trying hard to reduce his handicap was back on top of the podium again today with a modest 35 points, but enough to give him the win by one from runner up Kev Wild, who edged a three-way count back over Tom and Bernie.
There were two ‘2’s today coming from Scott Eaton and Greig Ritchie.
Friday, June 21,
The Emerald - Stableford
Emerald was the venue on Friday and it wasn’t in the best of condition, with some fairways really bad where they have been sprayed, and the greens having been cored and sanded, so it made for a tough day at the office.
Les Niko was hitting the ball fantastically well until he almost knocked himself out with his three-wood as it snapped just under the grip, went up in the air and came down on his head. His game went downhill thereafter. I know you shouldn’t laugh at someone’s misfortune but in this case we were all rolling on the ground.
A sprinkle of rain came through towards the end of the game but not enough to affect the experience of the crack golfers out there. Kiwi Bill couldn’t keep up his run of great golf, coming in today with also-rans. There was three-way count back for second third and fourth with Brian Maddox taking fourth, Colonel Bob Pearce third and Scott Eaton second, while our winning hero was Wayne Cotterell with a fine 38 points.
There were three ‘2’s today coming from Alan Beck, Phil Waite and Wayne Cotterell.
Note: The Billabong is situated just off Siam Country Club Road looking straight down Lake Mabprachan. Sign-up for golf at the bar or call Bob on 082 204 3411.

Buckingham takes the plaudits at 124th PSC monthly tourney

Report Nigel Cannon / Photos William Macey.
It was to the east that all 89 PSC members went for the PSC June monthly tournament at the delightful Eastern Star Golf Club on Friday 21st June. The course was presented in good order and the management had no others on the course allowing the 2-tee start to go uninterrupted. The only concern was rain as most left Pattaya in a downpour, however apart from just a sprinkle there was none that affected the players. The weather was cool with a stiff breeze.

Graham Buckingham.

Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham and Social Chairman Nigel Cannon were there to welcome members for registration. There were 5 men’s flights, A, B, C, D and Silver, plus a separate Ladies flight. A and B were played from the white tees, C and D from the yellow tees with Seniors and Ladies from their respective tees.
With a clear course it was rounds of about 4 hours and as the cards were submitted it was evident the course – with the wind - was playing a little difficult for most but as always some there were good scores.
The low gross winner this month was Mike Allidi (2) with a 76 gross score. Leading ‘A’ Flight was Mike Newbert (8) coming in with a net 76 while in form Freddy Starbeck (15) took ‘B’ Flight with 36 points. Another 36 was enough for Rod Brown (19) to win ‘C’ Flight but the best of the day came from Graham Buckingham (23) with 40 points to secure ‘D’ Flight honours. Kevin Dinan (21) with 34 points was the Senior winner and Usa Phaohom (22) took the Ladies prize.

Freddy Starbeck,

It was then back to Lewiinski’s for the presentation where again Colin and his team provided another great buffet with plenty for all.
At the presentation Nigel welcomed all and introduced Joe Mooneyham who expressed his appreciation for the support of all today’s players and the help from Nigel, William and the PSC unseen office staff for the preparatory work prior to the day. Nigel called the winning names and Joe presented the prizes with William taking the photos. The lucky draw followed and then the traditional 50/50 draw.
The next PSC monthly is at Green Valley and will be rather different with a ‘shotgun’ start at 1030 with the buffet and presentation at the course.
Note: In last week’s article about the newly elected Pattaya Sports Club committee, Joe St. Laurent was inadvertently left off the list. He was re-elected to his post as PSC Secretary.

Rod Brown.

May (left) was a surprised and happy 50/50 winner.

Knight returns to the podium

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Monday, June 17, Burapha – Stableford
The 25 golfers who came to Burapha today to play the C and D courses hit off early in fine weather, there were a few showers during the round but it remained mainly fine with a light cool breeze.
Most of us may have thought we were playing in the US Open, as the fairways were narrow and the rough brutal; but having said that the course was in great condition. John Cunningham’s 39pts looks and is pretty good on paper playing off 6 but could have easily been a whole lot more if he could have putted. Steve Mann is at last finding his golfing legs, taking second with 35 from Paul Bourke (34) and Bob Finley, who headed a list of five players all on 33.

Greg Hill (left) with Ian Hart.

Tim Knight, the most prolific podium striker in the ‘Race2Bkk’ series, with 33 podium visits this year, made a welcome return to form to win Div B with 37pts from Mark Allen (33) and Ivan Plunkett 31; fourth place went to Steve Blazsanyik, also with 31.
There were three ‘2’s from Bob Finley & Greg Hill (D2) and Stephen Blazsanyik (D8).
Div A (0-17)
1st John Cunningham (6) 39pts
2nd Stephen Mann (12) 35pts
3rd Paul Bourke (8) 34pts
4th Bob Finley (13) 33pts
Div B (18+)
1st Tim Knight (23) 37pts
2nd Mark Allen (18) 33pts
3rd Ivan Plunkett (24) 31pts
4th Stephen Blazsanyik (18) 31pts
Tuesday, June 18, Phoenix – Stableford
It’s a pity that Phoenix’s reputation has been marred in the past as many Outbacker still shun playing this venue, so only 6 Outbackers played the Ocean & the Lakes today. The Sports Day rate is well worth it and the course in great nick, with a very reasonable pace of play (around 4 hours) considering the course was relatively busy and no groups jumped in at the turn.
The climate was also perfect for playing golf with a gentle breeze and an overcast sky and all in all we had a great time with our two three-balls.
A friend of mine with whom I was playing, asked me what was the difficulty level of the course; I said medium due to the generous fairways - but unfortunately he found nearly all the water and lost lots of balls but hey, there is always the next time, however I did recommend he gave St. Andrews a miss for the time-being.
Steve Poznanski got the only ‘2’ on O5.
1st Stephen Mann (12) 33pts
2nd Suzi Lawton (20) 31pts
Wednesday, June 19, Siam Plantation – Stableford
13 players went to Siam Plantation to play the Tapioca (B) and Pineapple (C) nines. The day was overcast and very windy which made for very pleasant conditions for golf but some of the holes were long and tough into the wind. As ever, the course was in great condition and even though the greens had been lightly sanded they were still a pleasure to putt on.
The scores continue to be good and if you don’t break par you are not in the frame for the prizes. Andy Butts got it all together at last to win the day with 38pts from Doug Campbell (also on 38) who is back playing with us again after a few weeks off, even though his group played somewhat earlier than the main group. Bobby Driggs was third with 37 from John O’Keefe on 35, and welcome back to Mitch Black.
There were two ‘2’s from Bobby Driggs & Andy Butterworth.
1st Andy Butterworth (12) 38pts
2nd Doug Campbell (12) 38pts
3rd Bobby Driggs (13) 37pts
4th John O’Keefe (14) 35pts
Wednesday, June 19, Pattana – Stableford
It’s been a while since we’ve played here; as there seems to be a certain reluctance to head up the 331 but today traffic wise it was fine for a change, going through Amata City.
There were 9 of us, playing in three 3-balls on the A & C loops from the forward tees. The greens on A had recently been sanded so they were slow and bumpy but this didn’t seem to deter a few of our players from putting well. Otherwise the course was in good condition and was very enjoyable to play.
It was nice to see a couple of long time Outbackers, Chad and Pottsy, playing with us rather than at their usual venue, Pattaya Country Club, which is in a sorry state right now, so I hope they enjoyed their day at Pattana.
The Sugarman topped the day with a fine 38 from Steve Durey (37) and Waldo (36).
There were no ‘2’s.
1st Sugar Ray Handford (16) 38pts
2nd Steve Durey (17) 37pts
3rd Stephen Blazsanyik (18) 36pts
Friday, June 21, St. Andrews – Stableford
There were 22 Outbackers today playing at St Andrews due to Green Valley having yet another competition and as we are here again (St. A) next Friday, we have decided to postpone the Monthly Medal until the following Friday (July 5th), when we are scheduled to return to Green Valley.
The course was in good condition although the greens were still suffering from the recent coring and sanding making it tough for the old putter. We had a slight drizzle during our round but not enough to make anybody run to a watering hole..
Some good scores particularly from Bernie Stafford who won Div A with 39pts playing off 12 and also from the runner-up with the same score, Jack Butler, who elected to play off 12, as he felt his official PSC handicap of 14 was too generous, well played the pair of you. They (Bernie & Jack) were seven shots clear of third placed Paul Bourke (32) who beat Mitch Black on count back.
The same excellent 39pts won Div B, scored by Greg Hill, with Ian Hart (welcome back) in second on 38 and Stefan Hoge taking third with 37.
There were three ‘2’s from Martin Crichton & Suzi Lawton (10th) and Paul Bourke (17th).
Div A (0-15)
1st Bernie Stafford (15) 39pts
2nd Jack Butler (12) 39ptss
3rd Paul Bourke (8) 32pts
Div B (16+)
1st Greg Hill (18) 39pts
2nd Ian Hart (18) 38ptss
3rd Stefan Hoge (16) 37pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road along Soi Siam Country. Call Jack on 081 578 1956.

Double success for Howett

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Billy Fitzgerald, Lindsay Phillips, Colin James and Rod Howett.

Monday, June 17, Mountain Shadow - Stableford

The weather predictions here for today’s round were bad but we were lucky and escaped any storms or heavy rain.
There were 5 four-balls out off the blue tees and an equal 10 cards each in division 1 (H/cap 9-15) and division 2 (16 plus). Expecting to be cut after today’s round Rod Howett won the second division with 39 points, eight ahead of Jean Morel in second while Pepo Frick was third with 29.
After two weeks in the doldrums following a motorbike mishap Chris Voller returned to winning ways in the premier flight, but with a score of just 30 points! Iain Usher beats Billy Fitzgerald on a 8/7 back six count back to take the runner-up spot after they both came in with 29 points each.
All the greens here had been 50% holitized, which we didn’t know about beforehand, but the pin placements were all off this on the normal surface so this was not a problem today.
Near pins went to Ted Morris, Peter Pedder, Lindsay Phillips, Steve Richardson, Rod Howett, Jean Morel and the pink lady Miss Nut.
Chris Voller was a happy chappu as he birdied the 15th for the only ‘2’ in division 1 and a rollover ensued in division 2 to Plutaluang on Friday.

Wednesday, June 19, Eastern Star - Stableford

There were three ladies in front of our first group today and despite there being nobody else on the course it was a very slow round. There was however a cool breeze coming off the coast and a partial cloud covering and everyone enjoyed the weather conditions.
The cut today was made at 9-18 in division 1 and 20+ in division 2. ‘Count back’ Burnie recorded the highest score of 36 points to win the second division ahead of the organiser in second, one point behind, and Rod Howett finished third on 31, beating Glenn King on a 18/17 back nine count back.
Playing off 15, John Oxley topped division 1 standings on 35 points while Steve Richardson, in his last game before his return to OZ, came in second with 33 and Lindsay Phillips was one point behind finishing third.
Near pins were claimed by Bill Bertram, Don Head, Neville Scurrell, Roar Berger and Glenn King (2).
Bill Bertram birdied the 17th for the only 2 in division 1 and Glenn King, after two nearest the pins, grabbed the rollover pot in division 2 with a birdie on the third hole.

Friday, June 21, Plutaluang - Stableford

We had booked the South and East courses today for a change and as we stood on the first tee they were holitizing the first fairway and the starter told us the greens were the same, so we switched back to the West and North. We have now booked in three weeks time the South and East, which will make a change for all of us.
It was a father and son combination on the podium in division 2 with the old man Rodney Howett winning with 34 points and his son Anthony taking second one point behind. Colin James was third with 30 after beating Lee Casey on a 18/15 back-nine count back.
There were four players in division 1 coming in with 33 points; Billy Fitzgerald topped the list with 18 on the back nine while Lindsay Phillips took second with 17, Jerry Sweetnam third on 16 and poor Eiichi Matsumoto lost out with only 15.
Lindsay Phillips birdied the 6th on the North course for the only ‘2’ in division 1 and Rod Howett got a birdie on the 8th on the West course to take home the division 2 rollover pot.

Brian & Bob the toast of the week

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Derek Brook
Friday, 14 June, Pattana – Stableford
The course was in very good condition as it seemed the recent rain showers had mostly missed this area. We did however play ‘lift, clean, and place’ in the fairways based on reports of some rain the day before.

Brian Parish.

17 players made the trip after 5 begged off because of the possibility of rain showers, and those 5 missed a very pleasant day out on a fine course. We played the B and C nines from the shorter, 6400 yards, yellow tees. Over all the scores were good and the entire experience at this fine facility was pleasurable. Hopefully we can book it again in the next couple months on one of their Sports Days.
1st Brian Parish (14) 41pts
2nd Paul Alford (27) 36pts
3rd Max Bracegirdle (27) 36pts
4th Mark O’Callaghan (19) 36pts
5th Henry O’Brien (19) 35pts
Near Pins: Mark O’Callaghan, John Hackett, John Davis, Henry O’Brien.
Tuesday, June 18, Greenwood – Stableford
Another trip up the 331, which is not as bad as it once was, but with more and more transport trucks on the road one does need to allow plenty of time.

Bob Watson.

The test for the day was the A and C nines, as the B nine is still under some major renovation projects. We did get caught in a few very short rain showers but never enough to stop play. In fact it seemed that as soon as you got out the umbrella and covered your clubs, the shower was over and all went back to normal.
Other than several bumpy greens due to the plugging of new grass, the course was in good condition. Being a Sports Day it was also excellent value for the cost.
1st Bob Watson (3) 37pts
2nd Pierre Bietry (15) 35pts
3rd Geoff Bracegirdle (27) 34pts
4th Mick Coghlan (21) 34pts
5th Max Scott (4) 34pts
Near Pins: Bob Watson, John McMahon, Dick Warberg, Brian Parish.

Edwards back in the old routine

The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

The week began for the Pattaya Golf Society on Monday, 16th June, with a trip to Khao Kheow for a stableford competition on the A and C nines, which were in good order, if a little soft, with traces of sanding on the front nine greens.
With an end to visa runs, days off and times-out, the group survived the late withdrawal of two golfers to make good progress on the course from the yellow tees.
In third place was Sweden’s Tomas Nilsson with 31 points, only one behind Aussie Luke Abbey with 32 very solid points. The winner was Dave Edwards who was playing his first PGS round of the month and his 34 points showed his game is getting back on track after a few weeks in the golfing doldrums.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and Rabbi’s non-winners draw was won by Kevin Cumming, who only last week was sweeping everything before him. The Booby Bevy went to Shuichi Kodaka after a very uncharacteristic poor round which saw him with the day’s largest split figures and lowest score.
Khao Kheow is always a stern challenge and the forced inclusion of the C nine for the rest of the season will see more “long hauls” on the course.
Quality golf on a quality course
The PGS week of golf at quality venues continued with a visit to a surprisingly little used Green Valley on Wednesday, 19th June for a stableford competition. Once again the course was relatively empty allowing the group to tee off before time and make good progress around the well-presented course. Fairways are lush, giving good lies and the greens are deliciously paced at the moment.
A very close tussle ensued with Tomas Nilsson posting 35 points for third place, just one behind the joint winners, Dave Edwards and Robbie Taylor who declared themselves happy with their level par scores. Edwards also took a share of the ‘2’s pot with Chris Walsh after their fine efforts on the sixteenth, Chris especially coming within ten inches of a maiden “ace”.
Rabbi’s free beer draw was won by Masashi Iizumi and Mr Len took the Booby Bevy after a very uncharacteristic tee shot on the fourteenth which saw his tee peg propelled farther than the ball, neither of which making the red tees!
Green Valley is such a treat at present but a discouraging early season announcement on green fees has seen regulars bypass it in their schedules. So much so that the management have now closed Silky Oak until further notice. In the lowest of low seasons spirits can easily be raised with just a modicum of customer awareness. But that is a “farang” perception, is it not.
Taylor has it sewn up again
On Friday, 21st June the Pattaya Golf Society visited Mountain Shadow to play a stableford competition on the tough course which was surprisingly firm and allowed a lot of run. Greens were well paced but they also showed signs of recent coring and sanding which had the inevitable effects on putting. As with other courses at present it was sparsely populated and good progress was made throughout. A strong breeze also blew all day to help and otherwise hinder the field.
Masashi Iizumi found some form at last this trip with 31 points which gave him third place, four behind the runner-up Karl Flood. The winner was “Mr Consistency”, Robbie Taylor and the Aussie golfer enjoyed recording another sub-par round i the form of 37 points.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to Murray Edwards for his low score of the day whilst Rabbi’s free beer draw was destined for Ken Grimes, and not for the first time either! It had been a fine way to end the week with the PGS.

Hal Hart dines high on lobster (again)

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday, June 17, Pattana A & C - Stableford
CSS 73
1st Trevor Schirmer (12) 35pts
2nd Russell Gilroy (15) 33pts
3rd Terry Hodgkiss (23) 30pts
4th John Carlin (14) 28pts
Another very wet week started out at the always popular Pattana course where the A and C courses had been reserved for the group, and it might as well have been exclusively as there were no other groups to be seen either in front or behind, which made for a very comfortable round for all the players.

Hal Hart.

The only small problem was that once again golf buggies were confined to the cart paths only due to the heavey weather taken by the course over the previous days, but the day, apart from the fairways, stayed dry and a good day’s golf ensued.
Trevor Schirmer had one of his very steady days when he slipped in a few three-pointers and a few ones, but no zeros, to take the top step of the podium with a one over handicap round that was good by two to see off the challenge of playing partner Russell Gilroy. Russell also had a blob free round but not quite enough three-pointers to overtake the winner.
Terry Hodgkiss had a rollercoaster of a round that included four blobs but also five three–pointers, which helped him into third place ahead of the much improved John Carlin who is at last getting to grips with courses that usually include four par 5s and several par 4’s. He is hoping to soon be figuring amongst the top players regularly but he is not taking any bets as to how soon that will be at the moment.
There were no 2’s in the first division but Mike Hill slipped one in to clean out the second division pool.

Wednesday, June 19, Mountain Shadow - Stableford

CSS 75 NC
1st Terry Hodgkiss (23) 32pts
2nd Hal Hart (20) 30pts
3rd Allen Raaen (9) 30pts
Due to heavy rain falling for most of the night and continuing well into the morning in Pattaya, it was of little surprise to find the numbers well down for the usually well-attended trip to Mountain Shadow. Here the prices remain very competitive at 1400 baht including green fee, cart and caddy on whichever day of the week is played and no matter how many players play.

Terry Hodgkiss.

Arriving at the course the weather was found to be overcast but dry, affording almost perfect conditions for golf except that the whole course was still saturated from the night’s and previous day’s storms, making for a very long day from the tee and many difficult shots into what are in any event some of the most testing greens in the area. This ensured that the scores would not be of a very high order, with the CSS for the day moving out to 75 and becoming non-counting for upward review.
Terry Hodgkiss built as well as he could on his previous outing with a generally well held together round but one that again contained four zeros that kept the total down well below par for his handicap, but still sufficient to win the day. It surely cannot be too long before a blobless day appears and once again he will be hitting into the 40’s.
Hal Hart got the better of the count back with Allen Raaen with a 17 to 11 count back after Allen had gone off finishing the front nine with a stunning, certainly on the day given the conditions, 19 points.
Once again there were no 2’s in the first division but Benny Hansen made it many happy returns with the sole one in the second division, denying it was the first occasion when he had a ‘2’ with a putt.
Prior to the presentations there were welcomes for new members John Pinkowski and Neil Murray and a welcome back for Benny Hansen.
Friday, June 19, Greenwood - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Hal Hart (20) 36pts
2nd Lyle Blaw (12) 35pts
3rd Russell Gilroy (15) 32pts
4th John Carlin (14) 32pts
5th Trevor Schirmer (12) 31pts
Yet another day when the very hopefuls left The Haven amidst rain and ominously overcast skies to find that on arrival at Greenwood the day would be dry, although, as was becoming standard, the course was extremely wet with the scores again suffering as everyone struggled to manage the added distances required to have any chance to play short into the greens.

Trevor Schirmer.

Hal Hart had one of his very steady rounds with just one zero and finishing with a couple of three-pointers for an even handicap round that was just enough to squeeze out a win ahead of Lyle Blaw.
Fortunately for Hal his results against his playing partners were even better as he cleaned up front, back and total and was to be found once again savouring the Lobster Hawaiian in his after presentation celebratory supper. It was only a pity that Alwyne could not have been there to witness and at least partially pay for, an event for which he has already purchased a season ticket, but at a yet to be finalised price.
Russell Gilroy took third place with a well earned win in a count back over John Carlin, scoring 16 to 13 after John had a purple patch front half when he threatened to take his first win out of Soi 13, but sadly a couple of zeros and a couple of ones put paid to any hopes that he may have had. Trevor Schirmer took fifth place, another shot behind them.
Back at The Haven there was a welcome for new member Dave Lovell together with welcome backs for Lyle Blaw and Markku Tynell.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

JP Maffray in top form

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

Sunday, June 16, Green Valley - Stableford
1st JP Maffray (13) 41pts
2nd Jean LaRoche (18) 35pts
3rd Nick Odnoral (18) 35pts
Near Pins: No 2 Geoff Bracegirdle, No 9 & 12 Ed Wyckoff, No 16 JP Maffray
JP Maffray has been riding a purple patch recently, so much so that he went out and purchased a Green Valley lifetime membership, with instant results. JP is on record as citing “he never leaves a putt short” and with just 26 putts on his card who can argue with that? He comfortably sat atop of the podium with a sparkling 41 points.

JP Maffray (right) with Colin Davis.

JP was also the only player to better par and was six shots clear of Canadian Jean LaRoche and Aussie Nick Ordinal. Jean took the silver in the following count back leaving Nick to round out the flight.
Ed Wyckoff, Geoff Bracegirdle and John McMahon shared the ‘2’s pot.
Terry Mangan said goodbye as he returns to Ireland, we all wish him a safe journey home.
Tuesday, June 18, Phoenix Ocean & Lakes - Stableford
A Flight
1st Steve Gibson (12) 36pts
2nd JP Maffray (1) 35pts
B Flight
1st Peter Henshaw (20) 36pts
2nd Christy Knight (22) 35pts
Steve Gibson was best in A Flight and was co-man of the match with a steady even par round, leaving the title boy JP Maffray in second place for his second bag of loot in as many games.
In the Irish flight, Peter ‘Don ‘Corleone’ Henshaw also carded an even par round to share the man of the match honours. Peter was followed up the podium steps by Co. Dublin’s (swords) Christy ‘Good’ Knight.
Steve Gibson and JP Maffray split the 2’s pot.
Wednesday, June 19, Burapha C &D - Stableford
A Flight
1st Freddy Starbeck (15) 46pts
2nd JP Maffray (13) 37pts
B Flight
1st Patrick Lawler (27) 43pts
2nd Mike Jeffreys (20) 36pts
The story of the day was Freddy Starbeck and his 46 blistering points to take A Flight and man of the match. This relates to a net 77. Most of our readers will be aware that it is Freddy’s birthday next week and the handicap sectary has a nice little present for him. Maybe Freddy should be in the bold print but how can we deny JP Maffray who has been in the frame all week. JP took the silver a distant 9 shots back.
B Flight had a 40-point man in the shape of Patrick Lawler with a splendid 43 points. The man who is no stranger to the pay window, Mike ‘the Welsh Wizard’ Jeffreys, grabbed the silver with a solid even par round.
Not surprisingly Freddy Starbeck had the day’s only 2.
Note: July the 23rd is the bar’s name sake Monica’s 40th birthday so the management has decided to hold a birthday party in her honor, a free buffet will be provided and is open to all.
Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd Soi13/13 near Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Lusha’s luscious round

Phoenix Members Golf Society

Tuesday’s winners pose with staff at The Relax Bar.

Mike Gerrard
Cooler temperatures today, Tuesday, June 18, ensured all players were a little more comfortable and this showed in the scoring. Normally the heat and the tricky greens keep the scores down a little.
Our greens at Phoenix are similar to those of the recent US Open course at Merrion except those at Merrion were 3 points faster on the stimpmeter than at Phoenix. Try to imagine that? So our first congratulations go to Justin Rose for his triumph at Merrion.
Our second congratulations go to David Lusha for his superb score of 39 points today, winning by a comfortable 3 shots from ‘Mr. Consistency’, Mukesh Thakkar with 36 points who in turn beat Wolfram Krueger (36 points) into third place on count back. The refreshed Bob Neylon, after a few weeks rest from the game, recorded 35 points to claim fourth place.
Not only did David win the first prize, but also the KPK Food Services voucher. Thanks go to Keith Kephane of KPK Food Services for his donation.
Our third congratulations go to Wolfram Krueger who shot a hole in one at the Ocean 7th hole. We all enjoyed that, especially at the Relax Bar after where Wolfram duly bought everyone a drink.
Near pin prizes were won by Wolfram Krueger, Joe Miller, Bob Neylon & David Lusha. For the rest of us hackers there is always the lucky draw as a consolation. The free massage went to Sergio Volpi, the free drink to Mike Gerrard (both of these prizes are donated by the Relax Bar management), and 50 baht went to, yes you guessed, Joris Goetschalckx. With 50 baht left in the kitty another lucky draw was won by Bill Hewitt.
We have changed our format now so that all competitions every Tuesday and Friday will be under stableford scoring rules. No more stroke play. This is to enable all players to try and improve their ongoing scores each game for qualification in the newly formed monthly and annual competitions sponsored by the Blue Olive Restaurant.
We have also now acquired our new society shirts and they are available on both Tuesday’s and Friday’s each week on request, price 300 baht each.

Roger Ison scores a hat trick at Emerald

PSC golf from The Beaver Bar & Grill

Roger Ison.

With threatening clouds overhead, the loyal Beaver Bar golfers took to the Emerald Golf Course on Friday, 21st of June to undertake another challenging round of golf.
Roger Ison again managed to overpower the course with another score of 41 stableford points. This made it the third week in a row that Roger had taken top honors with a score over 40 points. Second place was garnered by Johnnie Williams.
Nearest the pin was the 13th par 3 hole from the back tee without a winner.
All returned to the Beaver Bar for lunch and refreshments. Larry extends his gratitude to all players for continuous attendance.

Willem & Paddy to the fore

PSC golf from Rendezvous Resort

Joel, Jeff, Willem & Paddy at the PSC monthly tournament.

Tuesday, June 18, Treasure Hill - Stableford

First to Tuesday when we travelled to Treasure Hill to find the course in good condition under clear skies. Leading the way with 36 points was Jeff Wylie (6) ahead of Brian Maddox (22) who shot a respectable 32 points. Near pins were spread around between Graham, Willem, Phill & Paddy.

Thursday, June 20, Plutaluang - Stableford

Thursday was a long awaited return to the Navy course with the West & North our allotted combination. The course was in generally good condition, the greens looking a picture, but as is the norm at Navy, the greens were very slow compared to most local courses requiring a hit rather than a stroke.
Phill Waite (13) came to grips best with the greens, showing great touch to hole putt after putt, at one point making 3 birdies on the trot, only to come home in an ambulance with 2 wipes. Still his 35 points was a clear winner, ahead of Jonathan Pratt (14) with 32, who edged Jeff on a count back 18/16. Near pins went to Phill & Jonathan, while Owen got 2.

Friday was the PSC monthly tournament at Eastern Star, with the course in reasonable condition, probably commensurate with the 600 baht green fee. Willem Lasonder (22) scored third in D flight with 2 near pins, while Paddy, should I say Big Hittin’ Paddy Devereux got the D flight Long Drive. Well done to the boys, while Jeff & Joel put a dent in the buffet at Lewinski’s, but no prizes this time.
Note: Rendezvous Resort, Restaurant & Bar plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday, with the bar hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Newbert pulls off a hat-trick

PSC golf from The Golf Club

Steve Ellison
Monday, June 17, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
T1st Mike Newbert (8) 38pts
T2nd Paul Greenaway (8) 36pts
T2nd Ron Robertson (30) 36pts
The fantastic run continues for the ‘Montauk Mauler’ Mike Newbert. Not only does he win here at our TGC comps, but also takes the PSC Monthly “A” Flight with a first there as well. Ya done us proud Mike!

Three wins this past week for Mike Newbert.

Paul “Take it Easy” Greenaway has also had a great run of late and posted his handicap on 36 points as did high handicapper Ron Robertson to tie for second place.
Wednesday, June 19, St. Andrews (white tees) – Stableford
1st Mike Newbert (8) 37pts
2nd Bill Eyles (24) 35pts
3rd Jim Brackett (7) 27pts
We always look forward to the low season and the summertime specials known as “Sports Days”. This allows the locals and visitors the chance to take advantage of some great rates on the best golf courses in the region. St. Andrews is one of those special days out and this is one of the best courses Pattaya has to offer. Not content with being a great test of the game, it also offers some spectacular scenery with a few holes that are truly breathtaking. Try to play this course this summer for a real treat.
Top of the leaderboard, once again, was none other than Mike Newbert. Mike is becoming ‘Mr. Consistency’ here at TGC and is proving very hard to knock off the podium. His 37 points was a fine score for this course and a 35 from Billy Eyles was enough for second. The real surprised look was saved for our pal Jimmy Brackett who waltzed away with third with only 27 points circled at the top of his card. You boys have just got to try harder!
Note: We are having our 4th of July Tournament next week so join us for this fun 2-man Scramble and a big BBQ afterwards. Check it out at the club or facebook for full details! Our Kabinburi Road Trip is scheduled for the 8th and 9th of July, so drop by or email to sign up. 2,900 baht for 2 green fees, (amazing) hotel and breakfast! It’s a great course too!
The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We try to schedule summer “Sports Days”, so come join us for a seriously fun day out. Travellers Rest Golf Group

Andy Rich
So in golfing terms this week started off with not being able to see the Woods for the Roses and poor old Phil Mickelson ended up as the Bridesmaid for the sixth time. Hope that hasn’t confused you all. One thing that the US Open showed us, however, was that maybe instead of building golf courses longer and longer it is time to make the golfer think more about the shot he has to play rather than always pulling out the biggest club in his bag. We shall see.

Monday, June 17, Bangpra - Stableford

There is no doubt that Bangpra on Monday 17th June was playing very long indeed, hence the low scoring. The fairways were holding after the heavy rain we have been getting and there was a stiff breeze which always seemed to be in your face.

Fergus Brennan.

Our wet weather expert Fergus Brennan has seen it all before and strode home with the best score of the day 32pts, which was good enough to take first place. Two ladies, both good golfers, followed him home obviously playing a shorter course than the rest of the men. Tewin Poopay Lamthong was second but only beating Mod Chaviraksa on count back as both finished on 31pts.
1st Fergus Brennan (13) 32pts
2nd Tewin Poopay Lamthong (11) 31pts
3rd Mod Chaviraksa (12) 31pts

Wednesday, June 19, Burapha - Stableford

On Wednesday 19th June it was a swift return to Burapha, which the TRGG had played the previous week. This week was C and D whereas previously it had been A and B and there was no doubt the points were harder to come by on C and D. Billy Ostle came top of the form with 33pts closely followed by Robert Cannon on 32 pts and Mark Bell on 31pts.
1st Billy Ostle (12) 33pts
2nd Robert Cannon (20) 32 pts
3rd Mark Bell (13) 31pts

Thursday, June 20, Phoenix - Stableford

On Thursday 20th June it was back to Phoenix (Lakes and Ocean) and the low scoring came to an abrupt end with Roger Wilkinson showing both the course and the rest of the competitors who was the master by shooting 39 pts. Jim Cleaver and Mod Chaviraksa fought it out for second and third place both finishing on 36 pts. Jim just made it into second winning on count back.
1st Roger Wilkinson (13) 39pts
2nd Jim Cleaver (12) 36pts
3rd Mod Chaviraksa (12) 36pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to play a round of golf with the TRGG please phone Fergus Brennan on 086 056 7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.

Golfnutter: Rules – Nearest Point of Relief

Nearest Point of Relief – is he right?

Welcome to Golfnutter’s Blog – a weekly commentary highlighting contemporary golfing issues, in Pattaya and beyond. For more on matters golf, especially Pattaya golf, visitgolfnutter.wordpress.com.
This week’s article is part of an on-going series on the Rules of Golf. They will vary from the obvious to the not so obvious, and feature golfing holes around Pattaya that regularly cause problems.
How many golf courses around Pattaya contain obstructions or abnormal ground conditions that can lead to a free drop? It would be simpler to reverse the question by asking how many don’t? I suspect there aren’t any. This makes sense given that most courses have been set up as resort or tourist destinations. The chances therefore of a golfer taking relief, under Rule 24 – Obstructions, or Rule 25 – Abnormal Ground conditions, are very high.

NB: Please note that phrases, when italicised, indicate a term as defined under definitions contained within the Rules of Golf.
Let’s take the common occurrence of a ball coming to rest on a cart path. This comes under 25-1 Abnormal Ground Conditions where relief may be taken as follows:
(i) “Through the Green: If the ball lies through the green, the player must lift the ball and drop it, without penalty, within one club-length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief. The nearest point of relief must not be in a hazard or on a putting green. When the ball is dropped within one club-length of the nearest point of relief, the ball must first strike a part of the course at a spot that avoids interference by the condition and is not in a hazard and not on a putting green.”
The critical point here, and one that many golfers, experienced amateurs and professionals alike get wrong, is using the correct club when determining the nearest point of relief.
Defining the nearest point of relief:

The diagram above right illustrates the term nearest point of relief in relation to Rules 24-2 and 25-1. The diagram instances the case of a right-handed player.
The nearest point of relief is the reference point for taking relief without penalty from interference by an immovable obstruction (Rule 24-2), an abnormal ground condition (Rule 25-1) or a wrong putting green (Rule 25-3).
B1 = position of ball on road, in ground under repair (GUR), etc.
P1 = nearest point of relief.
P1-A shaded area = area within which ball to be dropped, radius of one club-length from P1, measured with any club.
B2 = position of ball on road, in ground under repair (GUR), etc.
Two small squares = position of notional stance required to play ball at P2.
P2 = nearest point of relief.
P2-C shaded area = area within which ball to be dropped, radius of one club-length from P2, measured with any club.
What club is used to determine P2?
The Rules of Golf, under Definitions, page 29, actually state the nearest point of relief as; “The point on the course nearest to where the ball lies:
(i) that is not nearer the hole, and
(ii) where, if the ball were so positioned, no interference by the condition from which relief is sought would exist for the stroke the player would have made from the original position if the condition were not there.
Note: In order to determine the nearest point of relief accurately, the player should use the club with which he would have made his next stroke if the condition were not there to simulate the address position, direction of play and swing for such a stroke.”
Therefore the distance between the notional stance and P2, above, is determined by the length of the club that would have been used for the shot had the road or GUR not existed. Having established P2, any club may then be used to determine the one-club radius drop area.
How often do we see players use their driver to establish the equivalent of P2, above, when they are but a short iron from the green?
Next time you see a player faced with a drop off GUR, or similar situation such as P2, above, give him the heads-up on how to establish his nearest point of relief. Hopefully, he/she will thank you for it.
Happy golfing!

Still with no official organizer, Pattaya Marathon moves ahead for July 21

With no official organizing committee, the 2013 Pattaya Marathon hangs under a cloud of uncertainty.

While it remains unclear who actually will organize it, the Pattaya Marathon is still set to move forward, with the date set for Sunday, July 21.
The race, which draws runners from around the world, had been rescheduled last month to July 20, a day earlier than originally planned, but a spokesperson at city hall said that following discussions the race would now take place on the originally scheduled day. Juggled dates, however, may be only the start of problems for the marathon.
On June 7, Deputy Mayor Wattana Chantanawaranon announced that the city would disband the marathon’s longtime city hall organizing committee and hire an outside event-staging company to run the race. City officials refused to specify the reason for the change, citing only “unforeseen circumstances.”
In two meetings this month, however, bureaucrats were unable to actually decide on a company to take over the race so, as of June 19, city hall was technically still in charge.

Pattaya Deputy Mayor Wattana Janthawornanont.

The issue may boil down to money. Wattana said the city hall committee requested funds for jerseys, medals and other expenses from the Pattaya Permanent Secretary’s office. But as of June 7, no money had been released.
“There has been a decision to search for a private company to take over the marathon concession and Pattaya will pay only part of the budget,” the deputy mayor said.
The uncertainty has created a cloud over the city’s showcase event, with some wondering if the disorganization will endanger the race’s success. It has already caused the running date to be changed twice in the space of the a week.

Sansiri backs Thai sailor in legendary global ocean yacht race

(From left) Patinyakorn Buranrom, Ob-oom Chutrakul, Social Director of Sansiri PLC, and Michael Spies pose for a photo at the press conference held in Bangkok on June 20 to announce Thailand’s entry into the TRANSPAC 2013 ocean race.

Renowned property developer Sansiri PLC called a press conference in Bangkok last week to announce a world first for Thailand with its support of Patinyakorn Buranrom to become the first-ever Thai sailor to skipper a yacht in a major international ocean yacht race.
Patinyakorn, an accomplished sailor, will compete in the TRANSPAC 2013, the longest of the two oldest ocean races in the world, which starts in Los Angeles on 8th July and finishes in Honolulu some 2,250 nautical miles away (4,100km), sailing across the world’s largest ocean, the Pacific Ocean.
The TRANSPAC, known to be one of the most challenging offshore races in the world, is a “must do” on international sailors’ bucket lists, and Patinyakorn will be representing Thailand as co-skipper on the entry “Sansiri”, together with Rolex Sydney-Hobart Race veteran and former winner and record holder Australian Michael Spies.
At 29-years old, Patinyakorn has already achieved much and with recent successes in Asia’s leading regattas – Phuket King’s Cup, Top of the Gulf and Samui – is an inspiration for many young Thais to follow their dreams.
“Sansiri’s aim is to ‘construct a life not just a building’, and having seen Patinyakorn become an inspiration to so many other Thais, especially youngsters, we want to support Patinyakorn to be Thailand’s first-ever skipper in a global ocean race,” said Ob-oom Chutrakul, Social Director of Sansiri PLC. “Through racing in the TRANSPAC 2013, Patinyakorn is living his dream and making history for Thailand. We hope he can share his knowledge and experience, and encourage many other Thais to follow their dreams too,” she said.
Skippering the 40-foot “Sansiri” in the TRANSPAC 2013, against 59 boats and some of the best sailors in the world, is a challenge Patinyakorn is relishing.
“I could only ever have dreamed of an opportunity like this when I first started sailing. I have worked very hard getting to the stage where I was competitive and with Sansiri’s support I have now enjoyed success at a local level. To skipper a yacht in the TRANSPAC is a wish come true and to be the first-ever Thai to do so makes me very proud. I’m also honoured to be chosen by Michael as a co-skipper in this race and I hope to repay the faith he has shown in me,” he said.
The TRANSPAC dates back to 1906 when it was first launched as a race from San Francisco to Honolulu. However, the devastating Great San Francisco earthquake less than one month before meant the adventurous boats taking part that first year had to move and start in Los Angeles. The LA start is now tradition and the race has been run every two years since.
Co-skipper Michael Spies is confident the Sansiri crew will put up a good showing in the race.
“The weather is always the biggest challenge in an ocean race such as the TRANSPAC but with favourable conditions we hope to get a top three place in division, which should leave us in a good position overall. We are going into this race with the intention of doing both Sansiri and Thailand proud,” said the veteran of 36 Rolex Sydney-Hobart Ocean Races.
“With just 6 crew onboard our boat it’s going to be full on racing and we will be living on freeze dried foods for the duration of the race. I expect to lose maybe 10kgs by the finish line but hopefully Patinyakorn won’t lose that much or there won’t be much left of him,” joked the Aussie skipper.
The boat “Sansiri” being sailed by the team in the TRANSPAC 2013 is a Tripp 40 designed by highly respected American Naval Architect Bill Tripp. Recently purchased by Michael Spies, “Sansiri” has potential top speeds of 20 knots (38 kilometers per hour).

‘Dolphins’ settle for a point at Chiang Rai

Having lost their previous four matches, and twelve in total this season, Pattaya United players and fans will have been more than satisfied to return from the long trip north last Sunday with a valuable point following a hard fought 0-0 result with Chiangrai United.
The draw still leaves Pattaya stuck firmly at the root of the table on seven points but with Bangkok United and Ratchaburi also failing to win last weekend, it kept the Dolphins in touch with their rivals in the dog fight to avoid relegation. United will hope to pick up more points over the next couple of weeks as the face back-to-back home games against Police United on June 30 and Samut Songkhram FC on July 6.
At the top of the table, Buriram United maintained their lead over their closest rivals as they thumped Bangkok United 6-2 at home while Muang Thong United remain in second following a 3-1 victory over BEC Tero Sasana. Chonburi FC slipped up as they were beaten 2-1 at Samut Songkhram but remain in third place.

Team Etihad take out Legacy of Legends golfing challenge

Team Etihad players Khun Phakorn, Khun Payunsak, Lee Sharpe and Russell Jay Darrell stand on stage with the winner’s trophy alongside Dennis Irwin, Clayton Blackmore and Andy Cole.

Following a whistle-stop 3-day visit to Myanmar and Singapore, the quartet of former Manchester United greats, Dennis Irwin, Clayton Blackmore, Lee Sharpe and Andy Cole made a return trip to Pattaya on Wednesday, June 12 for the final leg of their Legacy of Legends charity fund-raising tour.
Rather than another gala dinner event, this time the ex-soccer stars were aiming to display their sporting prowess on the lush fairways of Phoenix Golf Club, accompanied by many keen local golfers and sports fans eager to spend further time with the footballing heroes.
Even a heavy downpour on the morning of the event couldn’t dampen the spirits of the players as they gathered at Phoenix in preparation for the midday tee-off. With the weather clearing just in time, the course drainage system did its job and the players found all 18 holes to be in immaculate condition. Indeed, the ex-United players remarked that Phoenix was the best course they had played on during their trip around SE Asia.

Manchester United legends Dennis Irwin, Clayton Blackmore, Lee Sharpe and Andy Cole pose on the tee at Phoenix Golf Club, Wednesday, June 12.

The scoring system utilized on the day was the stableford format and the field was split into four and five-ball teams with the best three scores from each team counting in the battle for the winners’ trophy. There was also an individual stableford tournament running concurrently, with three flights separated at handicaps 0-12, 13-18 & 19-24. With some fabulous prizes up for grabs provided by the generous sponsors it was all to play for as the shotgun start set the field on its way.
It was perhaps fitting that one of the major sponsors of this Legacy of Legends event in Thailand, Etihad Airways, rolled in first in the team competition as Khun Phakorn (38pts) and Khun Payunsak (37pts), ably supported by Lee Sharpe (36pts) and local radio DJ, Russell Jay Darrell, posted a winning score of 111 points.

Dennis Irwin tees off on the 11th hole.

Team Etihad was followed up the podium steps by ‘Team Dave Bowers’, consisting of Shane Ruddle, David Done, Rich Hurley, Dennis Steele and Dave Bowers himself, with a combined score of 110 points, and finishing on the same score but losing second place on count back was ‘Team Justin’ whose members included Pongpob Boonjun, Surin Boonsaduak, Runksan Yaulmanee, Khun Tavit and Khun Chookieat.
In the individual event, United legend Clayton Blackmore belied his 11 handicap to post 40 points over the testing Phoenix layout, winning the A Flight ahead of Michael Moir on 39.
‘Team Justin’ provided the top two in the B Flight as Pongpob Boonjun just edged his teammate Surin Boonsaduak on a count back, both finishing on 37 points, and in the C Flight there was a lady winner with Jeeranan Duncan taking the top honours with an even par 36 points ahead of Dennis Steele in second on 35.
With the trophy presentations completed, the football stars took time out to talk to their fellow golfers, sign autographs and pose for photos with fans as everyone partook of the free-flow beer and wine while awaiting the serving of a delicious evening dinner at the Phoenix G.C. clubhouse.

Andy Cole scores on the green.

Following dinner, the soccer stars helped out with the prize draw and Peter Banner auctioned off some fabulous sporting memorabilia to help raise further funds for the Legacy of Legends key charities, namely the Mechai Foundation, Operation SMILE Thailand, Woman With a Mission, and The Camillian Social Center Rayong.
The footballers finally said their goodbyes as they were due to jet off the following day to other parts of the world to continue their ambassadorial roles for Manchester United, but for golfers and Red Devil fans here in Pattaya, it was a day most won’t forget is a long while.
