Two Thai college students who won restaurant service medals at the
9th WorldSkills ASEAN competition in Indonesia thanked the staff of the
Centara Grand Mirage Beach Resort who trained them.
Jirapong Veerasanee and Chanatphim Treephoppokkhasab, who took gold and
silver, respectively, in the Nov. 11-20 competition in Jakarta, presented a
plaque to Centara General Manager Andre Brulhart Dec. 21.
The Dusit Thani College students had trained at the hotel for months, which
led to their success at the games, said Chonburi Department of Skills
Development Director Satien Pothphrsri, who accompanied them.
“When I was at the competition, I met with countless obstacles, whether it
was a guest fainting or even disappearing, all of which I had to rectify at
that moment,” Jirapong recalled. “But I always remembered to use my
intelligence, as advised by my sponsor, and to never lose the smile from my
face during service.”
WorldSkills ASEAN is a regional qualifying contest for the worldwide
competition in occupational skills from mechanical repair to computer
network administration to food service.
Thailand, which hosted the ASEAN games last year, sent 34 contestants in 32
categories. Five won gold in restaurant service, welding,
building-electricity technology, and two in hairstyling. In addition, Thais
won two silver and four bronze medals, along with 12 consolation prizes.
The skills department will choose one of the two winners to represent
Thailand in the WorldSkills global competition in Germany in July.
