BANGKOK, 16 October 2013 The Department of Civil Aviation has plans to expand Krabi International Airport, using its 2014 expenditure budget, with an aim to accommodate 3 million passengers by 2015.

Deputy Director-General for Airports Seree Jitsopha said that the expansion will cover both the passenger terminal and parking space. Mr. Seree said that the renovation is deemed necessary as the number of visitors to the province by air has increased continuously and is likely to hit the target of 3 million passengers by 2015.

According to him, Chinese nationals form the largest groups of visitors to the province, being the regular visitors all year round.

Krabi International Airport has welcomed more than 1 million visitors each year since the beginning of 2013, against a target of 1.6 million. Officials however are confident that the target would be achieved by the year’s end with the approaching high season.

According to the Department of Civil Aviation, since the beginning of this month, Krabi Airport has been operating around the clock, in compliance with the Government’s policy to raise the airport’s roles to par with Phuket International Airport, which is now pending the second-phase expansion.

Krabi International Airport has recruited an addition of 47 officials for the high-season to ensure smooth service to rising passengers.
