‘Wiang Kaen Pomelo’ gains GI status, strengthening Chiang Rai’s agricultural brand

The Department of Intellectual Property announces the registration of “Wiang Kaen Pomelo” as a Geographical Indication product, protecting its unique identity while boosting market value, exports, and long-term income for farming communities in Chiang Rai.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) has officially registered “Wiang Kaen Pomelo” as a Geographical Indication (GI) product. The registration safeguards the reputation, quality, and distinct identity of this local fruit from Wiang Kaen district in Chiang Rai province, while enhancing its market value and supporting long-term income for farmers and communities.



Wiang Kaen Pomelo is the ninth GI product from Chiang Rai, joining others such as Doi Tung Coffee, Nang Lae Pineapple, and Wiang Kalong Ceramics. This places Chiang Rai second in the country for the number of GI-registered products, after Nakhon Ratchasima. The GI recognition covers three varieties—Khao Yai (White Giant), Thong Dee (Golden Goodness), and Sailer (Red Ruby)—each known for its distinct taste, texture, and sweetness.

Grown in four subdistricts of Wiang Kaen, the pomelos benefit from rich alluvial soil, good drainage, and favorable climate conditions in the Ngao River Basin. With 1,383 farming households involved, the region produces over 25,000 tons annually, generating more than 100 million baht in value, including around 50 million baht in exports. China remains the primary international market.


The GI registration supports quality control, product traceability, and expanded marketing opportunities. DIP will continue to assist producers in strengthening supply chains, improving product standards, and accessing wider markets—ensuring that benefits are shared across the local economy.

To further promote GI products, DIP has partnered with e-commerce platforms such as TikTok Shop, Shopee, and Lazada, using livestreams, short-form videos, and targeted campaigns to boost visibility and sales. (NNT)
