PHANG NGA, Thailand – If you are planning to visit Southern Thailand, it’s essential to check the weather conditions first, especially after heavy rainfalls that have led to flooding and road closures in several provinces, including Phang Nga and Phuket.
On May 12, heavy rains throughout the night caused flash floods in the Khao Wong area of Takuapa District, Phang Nga. The floodwaters surged onto the Phetkasem Road, a major route connecting Takuapa to Phuket, from the Khao Lak Medical Center to the Nong Mool Takua water reservoir. Authorities were forced to close one lane of the road, and smaller vehicles struggled to drive through the flooded area, with some breaking down due to engine failure. The floodwater level reached about 50 cm along the affected stretch, leaving only one lane passable.
This incident is part of an ongoing weather event in the region, with flash floods, mudslides, and strong winds affecting road conditions. The Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department of Phang Nga has issued a warning to residents in four districts—Takua Thung, Kura Buri, Thai Muang, and Kapong—to stay vigilant for further floods and mudslides. Areas with rainfall exceeding 100 mm in the last 12 hours, including Ban Khao Kluay in Thai Mueang, saw rainfall as high as 145 mm.
The road situation is hazardous, with drivers urged to avoid traveling on affected routes unless absolutely necessary. Authorities are actively monitoring the situation, and roadblocks are in place in several areas to protect motorists from the risk of further flooding.
Before traveling, check the weather forecast, and stay updated on local reports. Be sure to monitor the situation carefully if you plan to visit Southern Thailand. Flash floods can appear suddenly and create dangerous travel conditions.
