Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Suriya Jungrungreangkit directs agencies to strengthen national water management measures as Thailand prepares for possible El Niño-related dry conditions.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Suriya Jungrungreangkit has instructed the Royal Irrigation Department to implement enhanced national water management strategies in response to the Thai Meteorological Department’s forecast of El Niño. This event is expected to lead to below-average rainfall and prolonged dry periods, potentially affecting agriculture and the public. As of June 23, the Smart Water Operation Center reports that large and medium-sized reservoirs nationwide contain 42,636 million cubic meters of water, or 56 percent of total capacity. This leaves room for an additional 34,118 million cubic meters. The four major dams in the Chao Phraya River Basin are at 52 percent capacity, which is considered manageable.

To prepare for the 2027 dry season, the Minister directed authorities to monitor weather conditions, coordinate data among agencies, and adjust water storage criteria to ensure adequate reserves for consumption, agriculture, industry, and ecological preservation. Officials must inspect all irrigation structures, flood dikes, and embankments nationwide, and mobilize personnel and equipment, including water pumps and thrusters. These actions support the government’s nine proactive measures for the 2026 rainy season. The ministry will continue public awareness campaigns to inform farmers and consumers about weather trends, encourage efficient water use, and support long-term water security. (NNT)
