CHONBURI, Thailand – A clouded leopard at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi province has become a social media sensation after photos shared by Director Narongwit Chodchoy captured widespread attention online. The animal’s large, round eyes, plump appearance, and distinctive coat pattern quickly won over viewers, with many playfully joking that it looked more like a python than a leopard. The viral star has also drawn fresh attention to one of Khao Kheow’s best-known conservation success stories. The clouded leopard serves as the zoo’s official symbol and is at the center of a breeding and conservation program that has been underway for more than three decades. The species is widely regarded as one of the most difficult wild cats to breed under managed care due to its sensitivity and complex breeding requirements.
Over the years, Khao Kheow Open Zoo has gained international recognition for its expertise in clouded leopard conservation and participates in the Clouded Leopard Consortium, a global network of zoological and conservation organizations. Its breeding program has produced multiple generations of clouded leopards, contributing to international conservation efforts and long-term population management. The leopard’s online popularity is also helping showcase Khao Kheow Open Zoo as a tourist attraction. Visitors can learn about Thailand’s biodiversity and the conservation work taking place behind the scenes. What began as a lighthearted social media moment has also offered a glimpse into one of Thailand’s most respected wildlife conservation programs. (NNT)
