BANGKOK, Thailand – The Meteorological Department reports that Tropical Storm “Fengchen” over the northern South China Sea is shifting its path due to cold air descending from China. The storm is not expected to directly hit Thailand, though rain will affect parts of the Northeast and South.
Somkuan Tonjan, Director of the Forecast Division, said Fengchen is moving northwest toward southern Hainan Island, China, from October 21–23. The cold air will weaken the storm, preventing it from entering Thailand. Initial impacts of moderate cold air will bring isolated thunderstorms to northern and northeastern regions, followed by cooler temperatures, especially in highland areas.
By late October 27–29, the cold air will temporarily weaken, with easterly winds bringing light rain in some areas. In the South, particularly along the Gulf of Thailand, rainfall is expected to increase, with the risk of heavy rain, flash floods, and landslides. Small boats are advised to stay ashore as waves could exceed two meters.
The Meteorological Department urges residents to monitor forecasts closely, prepare for cooler weather in the North and Northeast, and take precautions in southern provinces affected by heavy rain. Official winter conditions will be declared once criteria are fully met. (TNA)
