KOH SAMUI, Thailand – A popular Thai travel page has triggered widespread online discussion after sharing a costly transport experience on the first day of a trip to Koh Samui, reigniting criticism over high transportation prices in Thailand’s major tourist destinations. On May 18, the well-known travel page “Backpaeger,” which has more than 500,000 followers, posted about being charged 300 baht by a motorcycle taxi rider for a trip from Nathon Pier to Chaweng Beach. According to the post, the driver claimed the standard fare was actually 500 baht but said he lowered it because they were fellow Thais.
The page owner questioned whether 300 baht was considered a normal local rate for the route, noting that cheaper alternatives were available, including shared vans for around 100 baht and local songthaews. The story quickly gained attention online, with many Thai social media users once again criticizing what they see as inflated public transport prices in popular tourism hotspots. The issue has long been a point of frustration among domestic travelers, some of whom argue that travelling abroad can now feel more affordable and better value than vacationing in Thailand itself.
