BANGKOK, Thailand – Health officials are urging the public to limit exposure to fine particulate matter, or PM2.5, warning that it can damage the skin and contribute to premature aging. Experts say the particles can enter through hair follicles or weakened skin, allowing harmful substances to penetrate deeper layers.
The Department of Medical Services said PM2.5 can carry chemicals and heavy metals that damage skin cells and disrupt normal function. This can weaken the skin’s protective barrier and interfere with its natural repair process, leading to inflammation and increased sensitivity.
Dermatology specialists said prolonged exposure can cause both short- and long-term effects, including itching, rashes, and worsening of existing skin conditions. People with underlying skin issues are more vulnerable to these effects.
Doctors recommend limiting exposure to polluted air and following proper skin care. This includes avoiding scratching, using mild cleansers, and applying moisturizers regularly. Antihistamines may help relieve itching, while medicated creams should be used under professional guidance. Individuals with persistent or worsening symptoms are advised to seek medical attention.
