BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand proposed creating an APEC AI Governance Sandbox at the High-Level Dialogue on Leveraging Digital and AI Technologies to Empower the APEC Community, calling for closer regional cooperation on the responsible use and governance of artificial intelligence. Speaking at the event on July 24 in Chengdu, China, Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaichanok Chidchob said digital technology and AI should improve people’s lives, create economic opportunities, and support inclusive, sustainable growth. He stated that Thailand is advancing secure digital infrastructure, responsible AI governance, integrated government digital services, and cross-sector cooperation to build public trust in the digital economy.
The proposed APEC AI Governance Sandbox would provide a platform for governments, businesses, academic institutions, and AI developers to test AI applications, exchange best practices, and develop practical governance approaches that could be adopted across the Asia-Pacific region. Chaichanok said the success of artificial intelligence should be measured not only by technological progress but also by whether people and economies across the region benefit from it. He also noted that equal access to AI and shared prosperity should remain key goals of APEC’s digital transformation. (NNT)
