BANGKOK, Thailand – The Meteorological Department has warned of increased rainfall across Thailand over the next 24 hours, with heavy to very heavy rain forecast in several areas and several provinces at risk of particularly intense downpours. The department urged residents to beware of heavy accumulated rainfall, which could cause flash floods and forest runoff, particularly in low-lying areas where temporary flooding may occur. Bangkok and surrounding areas are expected to see thunderstorms covering 60 percent of the area, with some heavy rain. Temperatures are forecast at 25 to 26 degrees Celsius at night and 31 to 35 degrees during the day.
Northern Thailand is expected to see thunderstorms across 70 percent of the region, with heavy rain in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phrae, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Phichit and Phetchabun. Very heavy rain is possible in parts of Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan and Tak.
Northeastern Thailand is also forecast to have thunderstorms covering 70 percent of the region, with heavy rain in Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Kalasin, Mukdahan, Maha Sarakham, Chaiyaphum, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen and Ubon Ratchathani. Very heavy rain is possible in parts of Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon and Nakhon Phanom.
Central Thailand is expected to have thunderstorms across 60 percent of the region, with heavy rain in Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Lop Buri and Saraburi. Temperatures are forecast at 23 to 25 degrees Celsius at night and 34 to 36 degrees during the day.
Eastern Thailand is expected to see thunderstorms covering 70 percent of the region, with heavy rain in Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo and Rayong. Very heavy rain is possible in parts of Nakhon Nayok, Chanthaburi and Trat. Southwesterly winds will reach 20 to 35 kilometres per hour, with waves around 2 metres high and waves exceeding 2 metres in areas experiencing thunderstorms.
Southern Thailand’s eastern coast is forecast to have thunderstorms covering 40 percent of the area, with heavy rain in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Surat Thani. From Surat Thani northward, seas are expected to have waves of 1 to 2 metres, rising to around 2 metres offshore and above 2 metres during thunderstorms. From Nakhon Si Thammarat southward, waves will be around 1 metre, rising to 1 to 2 metres offshore and above 2 metres during thunderstorms.
Southern Thailand’s western coast is expected to have thunderstorms covering 40 percent of the area, with heavy rain in Ranong, Phang Nga and Krabi. From Phuket northward, waves are forecast at 2 to 3 metres and may exceed 3 metres during thunderstorms. From Krabi southward, waves are expected to reach around 2 metres, with higher waves possible during thunderstorms.
The Meteorological Department urged people in areas facing heavy rainfall to remain alert for sudden flooding and forest runoff and to monitor weather updates closely.
