Starting January 1, 2026, Thailand will impose import duty and VAT on all online goods from abroad, even low-value items, ending the long-standing tax exemption for parcels under 1,500 baht.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand to Apply Import Tax on All Online Goods from Jan ’26

Beginning 1 January 2026, Thailand’s Customs Department will start collecting import duty and VAT on all foreign goods sold online, including items as low as 1 baht in value, eliminating the current tax exemption for items under 1,500 baht ($43-44).

According to Customs Director-General Panthong Loikulnan, this policy aligns with global practices to close tax loopholes and ensure fair competition between overseas sellers and Thai businesses.

The Customs Department expects the new system to generate around 3 billion baht ($88 million) per year in revenue. To ensure a smooth rollout, authorities will hold discussions with major e-commerce platforms such as Shopee and Lazada this month to integrate data for faster and more accurate tax collection. (PRD)
