BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs will send an official invitation for border talks in September, while the Ministry of Defense dismissed fence-building rumors as part of an ongoing information war. Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Sangiampongsa stated that the situation at the Thai-Cambodian border remains unchanged. His ministry will soon send an official letter to convene a meeting of the Joint Boundary Commission, or JBC, this September to reaffirm previous discussions. He emphasized that engaging in disputes on social media is not standard diplomatic practice and that Thailand will adhere strictly to formal communication channels.
Separately, Deputy Minister of Defense General Nattaphon Narkphanit denied reports that Thailand was preparing to build a border fence near the Prasat Ta Muen temple complex. He described the current tension as a war of words and information operations, or IO, urging the public to remain steadfast and rational as the situation impacts negotiations. General Nattaphon added that the government is working to de-escalate the situation quickly, while upholding the nation’s sovereignty and dignity, acknowledging that it is a worrying issue but vowing to do its best.
