BANGKOK, Thailand – The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has been ordered to establish central and provincial command centers as heavy rain and flash floods affect northern provinces, with additional equipment, machinery, and personnel being deployed to support emergency operations. Deputy Interior Minister Jeseth Thaiseth issued the directive on August 19, ordering resources from DDPM regional centers in Lampang and Chai Nat to assist affected areas. Cell Broadcast alerts have also been sent to at-risk communities, with Nan, Phrae, and Phayao among the provinces under close surveillance.
Authorities are closely monitoring Tha Wang Pha district in Nan, where runoff from mountainous areas could trigger flash floods. A large volume of water is also moving toward the capital district, with river levels expected to rise about 50 centimeters above the banks, potentially flooding low-lying areas of Nan Municipality. Continued rainfall in Phayao, Phrae, and surrounding areas could generate further runoff and cause water levels to rise. Jeseth is scheduled to travel to Nan on August 19 to inspect conditions, monitor emergency operations, and review assistance for affected residents. (NNT)
