Thailand shuts 641 schools in five border provinces amid escalating clashes with Cambodia

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand has ordered the temporary closure of 641 schools across five provinces bordering Cambodia due to ongoing clashes in the region, the Education Minister said on Monday, citing safety concerns for students and staff.

Education Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat said she instructed the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) to coordinate with educational area offices in the affected provinces: Surin, Si Sa Ket, Ubon Ratchathani, Buriram, and Sa Kaeo.



The ministry has also prepared contingency plans should the closures need to be extended or if the format of education needs to be adjusted, including implementing online learning in some areas.

The move follows escalating security concerns along the Thai-Cambodian frontier. (TNA)
