BANGKOK, Thailand – The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has issued Announcement No. 12, prohibiting the use of unmanned aircraft (drones) in areas linked to the ongoing Thai–Cambodian border situation. The order, effective December 9, remains in force until further notice. The restrictions are intended to prevent security risks and support safe operations for military and law enforcement units.
Drone operations are fully restricted in seven provinces where military deployments are active: Chanthaburi, Trat, Sa Kaeo, Buri Ram, Si Sa Ket, Surin, and Ubon Ratchathani. Additional restrictions apply to Sattahip district (Chonburi) and Ban Chang district (Rayong), as well as within a 9-kilometer (5 nautical mile) radius around designated airports. More areas may be restricted based on further security assessments.
Private drone use in restricted zones is allowed only under specific conditions. Operators and aircraft must be registered with CAAT, and flight requests must be submitted at least three days in advance. Approved flights are limited to altitudes below 90 meters (300 feet) and permitted only during 6:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. Drone use is strictly prohibited between 00:01 and 04:00 hours. Operators must notify CAAT of the exact location, date, time, and purpose before each flight.
Drones operated by government agencies, such as the military, police, customs, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and the National Intelligence Agency, are permitted for official duties. However, drones from customs, agriculture, and natural resources agencies operating in restricted zones must notify CAAT, the Anti-Drone Command Center, and local security authorities.
