Deputy Government Spokesperson Capt. Patdarasm Thongsaluaykorn highlights a project helping more than 350 Roi Et farmers turn young Hom Mali 105 jasmine rice leaves into tea and powdered products for additional income.

ROI ET, Thailand – The government has highlighted an agricultural innovation that turns young Hom Mali 105 jasmine rice leaves from Roi Et’s Thung Kula Rong Hai area into tea and powdered products, creating new market opportunities and additional income for Thai farmers. Deputy Government Spokesperson Capt. Patdarasm Thongsaluaykorn stated that this project demonstrates how agricultural research can add value to Thai rice beyond traditional grain production.

The Agricultural Research Development Agency (ARDA), led by Director Dr. Thaweesak Thanadechopol, has partnered with Mahidol University to transfer cultivation and processing technologies to farmers in Roi Et. The research project, led by Mahidol University’s Asst. Prof. Dr. Supat Chaiyakul, covers cultivation, harvesting, quality control, and processing techniques.

The pilot project includes more than 350 farmers across five districts: Kaset Wisai, Suwannaphum, Pathum Rat, Phon Sai, and Nong Hi.

With proper management, farmers can harvest young rice leaves after about 28 days, allowing up to three harvests per production cycle. Findings show yields increased by over 80%. Commercial production could generate an additional 1,500 to 2,000 baht per rai, depending on production methods and market demand. In addition to traditional tea, the leaves can be processed into powder for beverages and food products such as lattes, smoothies, and baked goods. The project aims to diversify agricultural products, support local businesses, and create sustainable income opportunities for farmers in Thailand.
