CHIANG MAI, Thailand – Minister of Social Development and Human Security Nikorn Soemklang visited Chiang Mai on October 25, 2026, to review progress on a community housing project along Mae Kha Canal and its tributaries, aimed at improving housing security and restoring the local environment. The Minister was accompanied by Chiang Mai Governor Thosaphon Phueanudom, provincial government officials, and community representatives.
The project, implemented under the Mae Kha Model, addresses housing insecurity among low-income residents while promoting environmental restoration and community participation. Mae Kha Canal extends approximately 31 kilometers, with 10 kilometers running through Chiang Mai Municipality. Urban expansion has created challenges in housing, land use, and water quality.
In 2026, the project will support 239 households across three communities: Lang Khwaeng Mengrai (39 households), Kamphaeng Ngam (140 households), and Hua Fai (60 households). The ministry has allocated 4,112,850 baht for housing development, including 675,000 baht for temporary accommodation and 3,437,850 baht in subsidies.
The Minister emphasized that the Baan Mankong housing initiative strengthens communities through resident participation, livelihood development, and better access to economic opportunities. Additional measures include vocational training for older residents, access to occupational financing, and the potential development of Mae Kha Canal as a cultural tourism destination. The Minister also inspected improved riverside communities and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustainable housing, environmental restoration, and long-term community development.
