BANGKOK, Thailand – Authorities are updating national protocols and testing new tools to strengthen early warning systems for earthquakes and other disasters. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) held a joint meeting with key agencies to align communication strategies and improve public awareness.

DDPM Director-General Pasakorn Boonyalak led the meeting, which included representatives from the Meteorological Department, the Department of Mineral Resources, Water Resources, and other disaster-related agencies. All parties agreed to revise and synchronize their Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for faster, more coordinated alerts.

The Meteorological Department’s Seismological Division will remain the first responder for earthquake alerts, while DDPM will handle public dissemination. Agencies also shared their protocols for floods and other hazards to ensure a unified national response.

Pasakorn emphasized the growing unpredictability of global disasters and the importance of keeping alert systems up to date. He announced that the Cell Broadcast emergency alert system has entered its soft launch phase, with large-scale testing planned in coordination with mobile operators. The public will be notified ahead of tests through various media channels. (NNT)
