SEOUL – Thai and South Korean officials met in Seoul on Friday to launch a new cultural committee and discuss joint strategies for countering disinformation.
Officials from Thailand and the Republic of Korea held high-level meetings in Seoul on September 5th, 2025, aimed at enhancing cooperation in cultural exchange and strategic communications. The discussions were led on the Thai side by Nikorndej Balankura, Director-General of the Department of Information and Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson.
Mr. Nikorndej co-chaired the first-ever Korea-Thailand Joint Cultural Committee (JCC) meeting with his South Korean counterpart, Ms. Seo Bihn, Director-General for Public Diplomacy and Cultural Affairs. The committee discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in several key areas, including arts and culture, education with a focus on STEM, the creative economy covering film and games, tourism, and sports such as Muay Thai and Taekwondo. The JCC was officially established in August 2024 and is Thailand’s first such cultural mechanism, while South Korea has similar frameworks with nearly 40 other countries.
On the same day, Mr. Nikorndej met with Mr. Lee Jaewoong, South Korea’s MFA Spokesperson, to exchange best practices on countering disinformation. Both sides shared the challenges their offices face in the digital era and discussed strategies for addressing false information that can impact foreign policy and international relations. They also explored establishing a joint consultation mechanism between the two countries’ spokespersons to address issues of mutual interest. (NNT)
