BANGKOK, Thailand – The Thai government has announced that alcohol consumption will be permitted at certain traditional events held in locations where alcohol is normally prohibited, including weddings and diplomatic functions. The announcement was published in the Royal Gazette on July 11, 2026, under the Prime Minister’s Office Notification on “Traditional Ceremonial Events B.E. 2569.” The regulation was issued under the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act B.E. 2551, as amended by the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act (No. 2) B.E. 2568, allowing specific traditional gatherings to serve alcoholic beverages in restricted areas.
According to the announcement, traditional ceremonial events eligible under the rule include:
- Wedding ceremonies and receptions
- Traditional diplomatic events
The regulation took effect from the day after its publication in the Royal Gazette.
The announcement was signed on June 24, 2026, by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
The move clarifies limited exceptions under Thailand’s alcohol control regulations, allowing alcohol service at recognised traditional events while maintaining restrictions in other prohibited locations.
