Thailand is pioneering the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to offer a lifeline to those grappling with depression and suicidal thoughts. The innovative AI DMIND technology, now part of the National Health Security Office’s (NHSO) Line service, provides immediate mental health assessments to users. The technology is the result of collaboration between Chulalongkorn University’s Faculties of Medicine and Engineering, the NHSO, and the Department of Mental Health.

AI DMIND is designed to identify early signs of depression and suicidal ideation by analyzing voice recordings from the department’s mental health hotline database. The technology both aids in early detection and extends the reach of mental health professionals, facilitating faster intervention for those in need.

A team of leading psychiatrists verified the technology’s efficacy in initial screenings for mental health conditions. When users undergo assessment via the NHSO’s 1323 hotline, a team of psychologists is immediately informed. These psychologists then contact the individuals to further evaluate their situation and direct them to suitable care or emergency services if necessary.

Chulalongkorn’s Faculty of Medicine Deputy Dean, Prof. Dr. Nijasri Charnnarong, highlighted the growing disparity between the increasing number of mental health patients and the limited availability of specialized healthcare professionals. She pointed out that mental health diagnoses nearly doubled from 2015 to 2021, with last year witnessing up to 1.5 million people over the age of 15 diagnosed with depression. Only a third of these individuals have accessed the necessary treatment. (NNT)
