BANGKOK, Thailand – A Thai delegation led by Privy Councillor Air Chief Marshal Chalit Pukphasuk and Gen Chalermchai Sitthisart visited Germany on August 21 to study spa and hot spring management. The group included senior officials such as Tourism Authority Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Department of Tourism Director-General Jaturon Phakdeewanit, and Department of Social Development and Welfare Director-General Kantapong Rangsesawang. The visit supports Thailand’s plan to develop Sankampaeng Hot Spring in Chiang Mai province into a model of sustainable wellness tourism.

Germany is recognized worldwide for its leadership in spa and hot spring management, combining advanced water quality systems, a range of therapeutic services, and deep-rooted cultural traditions in wellness. The delegation began its study in Bad Homburg, a historic spa town popular since the 19th century, where they toured the Kur Royal Day Spa to observe its treatments and operations.

The spa is known for therapies such as hay steam baths, salt water baths, sand light baths, and ice fountain therapy. These treatments combine natural mineral waters with modern wellness techniques, creating a comprehensive health and relaxation experience.

Bad Homburg also has a special connection with Thailand. King Rama the 5th visited the town in 1907 for hydrotherapy, during which a new mineral spring was discovered and named in his honor. In gratitude, he gifted the town a traditional Thai pavilion, inaugurated in 1914, which still stands as a cultural landmark. A second pavilion was built in 2007 to honor King Rama the 9th. Both pavilions remain symbols of Thai–German friendship and are used for cultural events such as the annual Thai Festival.

Thai officials said the knowledge gained from the study visit will help guide the development of Sankampaeng Hot Spring into a world-class wellness destination. The initiative is expected to help integrate healthcare, cultural heritage, and community-based development while promoting sustainability and enhancing Thailand’s status in the global wellness tourism market. Drawing inspiration from Germany’s globally recognized wellness culture and historic ties with Thailand, the delegation aims to transform Chiang Mai’s Sankampaeng Hot Spring into a sustainable tourism hub blending healthcare, heritage, and community development.
