UBON RATCHATHANI, Thailand – The Royal Thai Army has sent engineering units to clear landmines in the Chong Bok border area of Ubon Ratchathani province, following a recent incident in which three Thai soldiers were injured by a landmine during a routine patrol.
The Second Army Region mobilized its mine-clearing team early this morning, deploying armored tractors, heavy machinery, and specialized mine detection units to sweep suspected danger zones along the Thai-Cambodian border. The operation includes the use of mine-protected bulldozers and armored excavation vehicles to ensure the safety of troops in hazardous terrain.
In addition to securing the area for future patrols, the mission aims to gather evidence to support claims that Cambodia violated the Ottawa Convention, which bans the use of anti-personnel landmines. While Cambodia has denied responsibility, Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to formally file a protest with the United Nations.
The Royal Thai Army also announced it is preparing an appropriate military response, depending on the situation’s developments. (TNA)
