BANGKOK, Thailand – An Army spokesperson said Cambodian forces have continued actions along the border that could be seen as attempts to provoke a response from Thai troops, following a recent incident involving gunfire near the Chong Chom checkpoint in Surin province.
Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree said 11 rounds were fired from the Cambodian side in the O’Samed area, with intermittent gunfire and occasional explosions reported since the ceasefire, contributing to tension in border communities.
Maj Gen Winthai added that some activities appear intended to provoke a reaction from Thai forces, including efforts to bring individuals, including foreign nationals, media, and influencers, close to restricted areas. When Thai troops fire warning shots in line with established procedures, images or information may be circulated that misrepresents the situation.
The Army spokesperson affirmed that Thailand remains ready to respond immediately if any weapons impact Thai territory, with decisions handled by responsible units based on local conditions. He also urged the public to rely on official sources for accurate information amid the circulation of false or manipulated content. (NNT)
