Royal Thai Army confirms restoration of disputed terrain and return to 2024 troop positions following talks with Cambodian forces ahead of June 14 boundary meeting.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Royal Thai Army has reported a reduction in tensions at the Chong Bok border crossing following a dialogue initiated by Cambodian military officials with the Thailans’s Suranaree Task Force. Talks between both sides led to a joint agreement to adjust troop positions and restore terrain in the disputed area, including the backfilling of a trench referred to as a kulet. These steps are being taken ahead of the upcoming Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Committee meeting scheduled for June 14.

The Cambodian delegation was led by Lt Gen Srey Deuk, Deputy Commander of the Royal Cambodian Army and head of the 3rd Support Division. On the Thai side, discussions were attended by Suranaree Task Force Commander Maj Gen Somphop Parawej, and Maj Gen Nutt Sriin, Deputy Commander of the 2nd Army Region. The meeting followed concerns over a land encroachment incident in the Chong Bok area, near the Thai-Cambodian border.

Both delegations agreed to return military personnel to positions they held in 2024, in order to reduce the likelihood of future conflict. In addition, the previously dug trench will be restored to its original condition, helping to ease local tensions. These steps are expected to contribute to a more stable environment ahead of formal boundary talks.

Officials view these developments as vital to maintaining dialogue and managing cross-border concerns in a cooperative and peaceful manner. The Royal Thai Army has reiterated its intention to resolve any remaining issues through established bilateral frameworks. (NNT)
