BANGKOK, Thailand – Suvarnabhumi International Airport marked its 20th anniversary on September 28 after handling nearly 900 million passengers since opening, reinforcing its role as Thailand’s main international gateway. Since beginning operations on September 28, 2006, the airport has handled more than 899.9 million passengers, over 5.57 million flights and more than 24.9 million tons of air cargo.
During the first 11 months of fiscal 2026, from October 2025 through August 2026, Suvarnabhumi served 118 scheduled airlines. The airport handled 346,905 aircraft movements, up 1.83% from the same period last year, while passenger numbers reached 59,626,075, an increase of 2.43%. Air cargo operations also continued to grow, with 15,855 cargo flights, up 6.34%, carrying more than 1.4 million tons, an increase of 4.63%.
Airport director Kittiphong Kittikhajon said Suvarnabhumi is continuing to improve services and introduce new technology as it works towards becoming a global aviation hub. The airport has installed 106 of 122 planned Automated Border Control (ABC) machines for international arrivals and departures. The departure system can process e-Passports from more than 90 countries, while the arrival system currently supports passports from 34 countries.

A special assistance lane is also available for passengers requiring additional help, with the aim of reducing waiting times and making border procedures more convenient. Suvarnabhumi is also upgrading passenger facilities, including information counters, rest areas, Kids Zones, co-working spaces and digital seating areas. More than 200 charging points for electronic devices have been added.
The airport is renovating 124 passenger toilets across its terminal and concourse buildings, with 69 already completed and the remainder expected to be finished by 2028. Plans are also under way to create a dedicated meeting area for group tours at Parking Zone 3, helping reduce congestion around check-in counters and improve passenger flows.
Alongside infrastructure and service improvements, the airport is pursuing environmental and community initiatives under its Corporate Citizenship Airport program. These include English-language programs for local youth, employment initiatives, mangrove restoration, solar power and greater use of electric vehicles.
Suvarnabhumi was ranked eighth among the 10 most connected airports across the Asia-Pacific and Middle East region in the 2025 ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East Air Connectivity Index, which considers route coverage, flight frequency and connectivity efficiency.
Kittiphong said the airport would continue developing its infrastructure, technology, services, safety standards and environmental programs as it enters its third decade, with the goal of connecting Thailand more closely with the world while pursuing sustainable growth.
