SURAT THANI, Thailand – Surat Thani Province hosted the 23rd annual Red-Whiskered Bulbul Singing Competition on October 24–25, 2026, as part of its traditional Chak Phra, Robe Offering, and Long-Boat Racing Festival, attracting bird enthusiasts from across Thailand. The competition, known locally as the Lord of 100 Islands Championship, was organized by the Surat Thani Red-Whiskered Bulbul Club, Wat Pradu Subdistrict Municipality, Wat Sunthon Niwat, and Wat Sunthon Niwat School.
The two-day event featured several categories, including International Fancy, Eight-Song VIP, Golden Voice, Rising Star, and Eight-Song Open. Participants showcased their birds’ singing abilities. In addition to promoting tourism and community unity, the event supports education and local religious activities. After expenses, proceeds will fund scholarships for students at Wat Sunthon Niwat School and provide additional contributions to the temple for religious and community purposes.
This year’s competition drew considerable interest after Thailand removed the red-whiskered bulbul from its protected wildlife list on September 1, 2026. The regulatory change permits legal breeding and related activities, including singing competitions, while restrictions on capturing birds from protected habitats remain in place. Organizers stated that the competition helps preserve traditional Southern Thai bird-keeping practices, promotes tourism, and creates economic opportunities for local communities.
