BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s Department of Highways will open the elevated M82 Motorway along the full Bang Khun Thian–Ekachai–Ban Phaeo route for free public use from 10 a.m. on Friday, August 28, providing an alternative route for motorists travelling south. The trial opening will allow motorists to use the newly completed 16.4-kilometre Ekachai–Ban Phaeo section, connecting with the existing M82 route from the Bang Khun Thian interchange. The entire elevated motorway will cover approximately 25 kilometres from the Southern Kanchanaphisek Ring Road to Ban Phaeo.
The Department of Highways said the civil construction work is now about 98% complete. The free trial service will operate 24 hours a day, every day, with no toll charges. The new route is expected to ease congestion on Rama 2 Road and provide faster access towards Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and other southern provinces.
Four access points to open
From August 28, motorists will be able to enter and exit the elevated M82 at four locations:
- Phanthai Norasing
- Maha Chai 1
- Maha Chai 2
- Ban Phaeo
The Samut Sakhon 1 and Samut Sakhon 2 interchanges will remain closed because construction is still underway. The Department of Highways aims to complete the remaining civil works by the end of 2026. Installation of toll collection and traffic-control systems is expected to begin in 2027 and take about two years. Full commercial operation with toll collection is targeted for 2029. Speed limits and vehicle restrictions During the trial period, speed limits will be restricted because construction and some safety systems have not yet been fully completed.
Four-wheel vehicles will be limited to 80 km/h, while trucks and buses will be limited to 65 km/h.
Pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles of all engine sizes, three-wheel vehicles and other wheeled vehicles will not be permitted to use the elevated M82. They can continue using the existing Rama 2 Road below.
The Department of Highways said the new motorway will improve travel times and safety while strengthening freight transport and logistics connections. It is also expected to benefit trade, investment, tourism and economic activity in Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and other southern provinces.
