BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul addressed the renewed Thai-Cambodian border tensions, stating that the area is already under martial law. He noted that decisions regarding the protection of national sovereignty fall directly under the authority of the Commander of the 2nd Army Area, who is responsible for enforcing martial law. The Prime Minister expressed confidence that the commander will exercise sound judgment based on the principle of safeguarding Thailand’s sovereignty.
When asked if the military would have the authority to retaliate if necessary, PM Anutin confirmed this was the case. He added that the government is prepared to fully support personnel stationed at the border. The Prime Minister announced his intention to visit the area next week.
In his capacity as Minister of Interior, he will coordinate with administrative officials to care for local residents, aiming to alleviate the burden on the military. This will allow soldiers to focus entirely on protecting national sovereignty, especially in response to any troop movements or provocations.
Anutin asserted that the border situation has consistently been tense and that Thailand is more than prepared. He affirmed that the military can use its full discretion without hesitation, as the government is ready to provide unwavering support and has given a “green light” for necessary actions.
