Deputy PM Phumtham urges careful assessment before deciding on the future of the Thai-Cambodian Border Task Force, emphasizing adherence to ceasefire agreements and Thai sovereignty.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Phumtham Vechayachai, acting as Prime Minister, addressed questions regarding Cambodian incursions into Ban Nong Chan, Khok Sung district, Sa Kaeo province. He stated that Thailand is currently adhering to the ceasefire agreement, and any future actions—including the potential removal of encroaching communities—will be discussed during the next Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee (GBC) meeting in September.

Phumtham emphasized that encroachment will not be tolerated, and barbed wire positions remain in place. Regarding attempts by Cambodian groups to pressure or provoke Thai soldiers, he noted that such matters are Cambodia’s responsibility to manage. He reiterated that GBC discussions will require multiple sessions to reach agreements, and Thailand will continue to assert its sovereignty over any encroached areas.

On Cambodia’s request to postpone the Regional Border Committee (RBC) meeting involving the 2nd Army Area, Phumtham said it is acceptable, as it provides a record of Cambodia’s cooperation. Thailand maintains discussions at multiple levels, including GBC and RBC.

Regarding the future of the Thai-Cambodian Border Task Force, Phumtham stated that a joint assessment of the situation is necessary before any decision is made. He explained that if the situation stabilizes, the task force may no longer be needed, but the National Security Council (NSC) will provide guidance based on the assessment.

The NSC meeting on Monday evaluated the overall border situation to determine Thailand’s stance for the next GBC session. Phumtham also responded to complaints from some Khon Kaen citizens who accused him of allowing Cambodian encroachment to disadvantage Thailand internationally, saying such matters will follow the legal process and he will cooperate with any investigation.
