Rangers at Similan Islands National Park recovered a large abandoned fishing net near Payang Island during a Marine Smart Patrol, preventing further harm to coral reefs and marine species affected by ghost fishing gear.

PHANG NGA, Thailand – Officials at Similan Islands National Park in Phang Nga province have removed a large abandoned fishing net weighing more than 500 kilograms after discovering it entangled in waters near Payang Island.

The net was identified during a Marine Smart Patrol in the eastern area of the island. Rangers from Protection Unit SL.1 on Koh Miang carried out a recovery operation, successfully removing the debris to prevent further damage to the marine environment.

Authorities classified the net as ghost fishing gear, a form of lost equipment that continues to trap marine life underwater. Such debris can harm coral reefs and threaten species such as sea turtles and fish that become entangled.

Officials said swift removal is critical, as unattended nets can continue causing damage over time. The operation supports ongoing efforts to protect marine ecosystems and preserve biodiversity in the area. (NNT)
