The Cyber Crime Police have arrested three more suspects involved in the illegal sale of personal data belonging to Thai people.

The operation was disclosed by Pol Lt Gen Thana Chuwong, acting deputy national police chief and Pol Lt Gen Worawat Wattanakornbancha, Commissioner of the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau.

This recent operation had already seen numerous arrests in July 2023 in Phuket province in connection with the massive data trading ring.

In this crackdown, three key suspects were apprehended. The first suspect, Mr. Pasin, aged 41, was identified as an insurance broker who had been supplying customer data to illegal entities. He was detained in Pathum Thani province, and authorities are currently investigating the extent of the data he had been selling.

The second suspect, Mr. Nattapong, aged 28, was arrested in Kalasin province. He was a programmer responsible for creating an API Bypass tool that could circumvent facial recognition security measures in banking applications.

This allowed large sums of money to be transferred, exceeding 50,000 baht, without triggering bank restrictions. His tool was reportedly used by both gambling groups and mule account owners to facilitate swift transactions.

The third suspect, Mr. Yodchai, aged 24, was apprehended in Udon Thani province. He was an administrator for a Facebook group involved in the sale of personal data acquired from online gambling websites, totaling over 15 million names. The information sold included basic details such as names and phone numbers.

Furthermore, data trading and exchange activities among the dark web network were seen in this Facebook group. This successful operation reflects the ongoing efforts of Thai law enforcement to combat cybercrime and protect the privacy and personal data of Thai citizens. (TNA)
